The concentration of terrorists, political suspects, ethnic minorities, prisoners of war, enemy aliens, and other potentially “dangerous” populations spans the modern era. From Konzentrationslager in colonial Africa to strategic villages in Southeast Asia, from slave plantations in America to Uyghur sweatshops in Xinjiang, and from civilian internment in World War II to extraordinary rendition at Guantanamo Bay, mass detention is as diverse as it is ubiquitous. Camps: A Global History of Mass Confinement (University of Toronto Press, 2024) offers a short but compelling guide to the varied manifestations of concentration camps in the last two centuries, while tracing provocative transnational connections with related institutions such as workhouses, migrant detention centers, and residential schools. In this live episode of Processa Talks, Kiara Cristina Ventura sits down with artist Emmanuel Massillon for a deep conversation on art, culture, and process. Together, they explore Emmanuel's practice, the stories behind his work, and how his identity and experiences shape his vision as an artist. Later in the episode, they are joined by artist Allen Golder-Carpenter to reflect on the Massillon's performance piece "Cell 72: The Cost of Confinement" at Harlesden High Street Gallery in London, where Allen inhabited the role of an inmate for three days in June 2025.Recorded live at Studio Processa as part of the Processa Social Club series, this conversation unfolds with honesty, laughter, and insight into the realities of navigating the art world as a young Black conceptual artist.About Emmanuel:Emmanuel Massillon (b. 1998, Washington D.C.) is a conceptual artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture, performance, and sound. His work critically examines race, identity, and culture—especially as they relate to people of African descent—drawing from his upbringing in inner-city D.C., his Haitian heritage, and lived experience. Rejecting strictly polished aesthetics, Emmanuel often works with raw, tactile materials — found objects, hand-carved wood, cultural memorabilia, even food products — to evoke history, memory, and material storytelling. His visual language channels influences like Jazz, R&B, Rap, folk art, and street vernacular, creating layered narratives that blur formal boundaries. Emmanuel has exhibited internationally, and his work is held in significant collections including the Baltimore Museum of Art, C21 Museum, The Flint Institute of Arts, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Lee Morris' life story is a raw and powerful journey from bank robbery and brutal prison time to redemption. Growing up in Duchess County, New York, Lee's childhood was shaken by his parents' divorce, leading him down a troubled path. After moving to Florida as a teenager, he fell in with the wrong crowd, began robbing houses, and eventually escalated to robbing a bank — a decision that landed him four years in one of Florida's toughest youthful offender prisons. Even after his release, Lee continued down a destructive road and was sent back to prison 16 years later for drug charges. Today, he's sharing his story of survival, the realities of prison life, and how he finally turned his life around after years of chaos and incarceration. #PrisonStories #TrueCrimePodcast #BankRobbery #PrisonLife #FloridaPrison #RedemptionStory #SecondChances #LockedInWithIanBick Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ Presented by Tyson 2.0 & Wooooo Energy: https://tyson20.com/ https://woooooenergy.com/ Use code LOCKEDIN for 20% OFF Wooooo Energy Buy Merch: http://www.ianbick.com/shop Timestamps: 00:00 Intro: The Bank Robbery 00:18 Lee's Troubled Childhood 03:02 Family Background and Early Influences 06:00 Growing Up in Poverty 09:19 Early Delinquency and Moving to Florida 13:14 Getting Involved with Guns and Crime 15:36 From House Robberies to Robbing a Bank 18:16 The Bank Heist Unfolds 20:54 Aftermath: Getting Caught and Facing Court 25:00 Prison: Sentencing and First Days 27:00 Surviving Florida Youthful Offender Prison 33:36 Prison Violence and Racism 40:44 Learning Prison Rules and Inmate Justice 45:12 Family Support During Incarceration 47:51 Smuggling, Confinement, and Prison Life 52:52 Release: Getting Out and Reentering Society 55:40 Back to the Streets: Drugs, Probation, and Temptation 01:01:03 Drifting Back into Crime 01:04:49 Major Drug Case and Second Arrest 01:07:40 Second Prison Term: Adult System 01:13:33 Contrasts Between Youthful Offender and Adult Prison 01:15:54 Lessons Learned From Prison 01:20:27 Work Release and Returning to Society 01:24:12 Making a Fresh Start: Moving North 01:26:00 Finding Support and Unconditional Love 01:28:03 Life Today and Reflections 01:29:00 Advice for Young People & Final Thoughts Powered by: Just Media House : https://www.justmediahouse.com/ Creative direction, design, assets, support by FWRD: https://www.fwrd.co Learn more about your ad choices. It's Black August 2025! And We are two FLEA days into commemorating its 46th year. Last year We laid down some powerful work to educate the public, tell the truth and share the tenets and practice of Black August which serve to uplift and empower the People toward liberation and self-determination. This work endures and seeks to preserve its integrity, and remains as crucial as ever. (We'll hear excerpts from last year's Prison Focus airing as nube is in Africa.). We will continue to pay tribute to our beloved New Afrikan Brotha Yafeu Iyapo, the embodiment of revolutionary love who transitioned to the ancestors June 24, 2025, Rest in Power, Brotha. We will bear witness to the expression of the seven principles of Ma'at: Truth, Justice, Harmony, Balance, Order and propriety and the powerful show of Unity and Love we have for one another, but that is so often vilified, manipulated, criminalized and distorted. This tribute, this spiritual acknowledgment and love up, is manifest through the Ministry of Never Forget, Never Again, Never Alone, created in the loving partnership between Queen Makini Iyapo, surviving on this earthly plane, and her husband, Yafeu Iyapo, and carries forward his legacy. Husband, son, brother, uncle, comrade, friend, mentor, fighter, lover of life and unapologetic New Afrikan Revolutionary Nationalist Yafeu Iyapo lives on in us and with us. Listen up, Listen in! We continue telling our New Afrikan Ourstory 365 as we make a pivot from our conversation about some of the negative and dehumanizing music/lyrics and images targeting our young Afrikans – due to some of the original participants of that conversation unable to join us – to an organic unfolding conversation about some of the current events of interest. The privilege of being in conversation with and hearing from the New Afrikan Elder Political Prisoners who survived one of most horrific forms of domestic torture – decades of solitary confinement (extreme sensory deprivation) meant to break them – cannot be overstated. They bring to us a body of knowledge, political analysis, social commentary and perspective, unique and unmatched in its scope, its depth and its simple humanness. May is Cemetery Appreciation Month, and Jennie and Dianne are celebrating by sharing three Ordinary Extraordinary stories buried beneath the soil of three Colorado cemeteries. Hear the tragic tale of a young woman who lost her life to 'consumption' in a rural community, the complex and incomplete story of a woman institutionalized at the Colorado State Hospital for the Insane, and the gold prospector who left his family behind forcing his widow to seek justice on his behalf several years after his passing. Sometimes the most compelling stories are the ones buried in plain sight. As you walk through your own local cemeteries this month, look beyond the headstones and imagine the lives that once were. You might just uncover an Ordinary Extraordinary story waiting to be told.View this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Ox2JHkyC-L0Need an Ordinary Extraordinary Cemetery Podcast tee, hoodie or mug? This episode looks at On the Waterfront, the celebrated 1954 American film directed by Elia Kazan and written by Budd Schulberg. The film stars Marlon Brando as the ex-prize fighter turned New Jersey longshoreman Terry Malloy. Malloy struggles to stand up to mob-affiliated union boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) after Malloy is lured into setting up a fellow dockworker whom Friendly has murdered to prevent him from testifying before the Waterfront Crime Commission about violence and corruption at the docks. The pressure on Malloy rises as he falls in love with Edie Doyle (Eva Marie Saint), the murdered dockworker's sister, and as Edie, along with local priest Father Pete Barry (Karl Malden), urge Malloy to do the right thing. Malloy ultimately testifies against Friendly and challenges Friendly's leadership at great personal risk. While the film is about a courageous fight against a corrupt power structure and injustice, it is also influenced by director Elia Kazan's own controversial decision to act as an informant against fellow directors, writers, and actors during the McCarthy-era Red Scare.Timestamps:0:00 Introduction2:20 Corruption on the docks9:18 Boxing: I could have been a contender17:07 The priest on the waterfront23:44 Testifying before waterfront crime commission32:10 Informants34:48 Elia Kazan and the House Un-American Activities Committee47:04 The film's relevance today48:39 Some people who stood up to HUAC50:40 Separating the art and the artistFurther reading:Demeri, Michelle J., “The ‘Watchdog' Agency: Fighting Organized Crime on the Waterfront in New York and New Jersey,” 38 New Eng. This week, Mercury sails the turbulent Piscean seas, connecting with Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and the North Node, on the way to a high-flying Pisces New Moon. The Sun crosses paths with Jupiter in Gemini and wishes for a little peace and quiet. Venus stations for her 40-day retrograde period. And a listener question about minor aspects; What makes them so minor? Plus: Restringing your guitar, extreme haircuts, and a square + a semi-square: does that sound minor to you? The Pisces New Moon (Feb. 27, 4:45 pm PST, 09º40' Pisces) features a stellium of planets in Pisces and a square from Jupiter to the New Moon point. Look for tension between peace and quiet, and endless noise and distraction. The Sabian symbol for this New Moon degree, 10 Pisces, is An aviator in the clouds. Themes to work with during this New Moon: spirituality, collaborating on a creative project, forgiveness, and emotional and physical healing. [7:25] This is the New Moon in a lunar phase family cycle (LPFC) that unfolds over the next three years. The First Quarter Moon in this LPFC is on Nov. 27, 2025, the Full Moon on Aug. 27, 2026, and the Last Quarter Moon on May 28, 2027. [9:18] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods. Retrograde periods for all planets favor inner work over outer action in the matters that are ruled by the retrograde planet. With Venus retrograde, avoid major purchases, permanent relationship changes, and physical changes that can be hard to reverse. [16:20] Mercury conjoins Neptune (March 2, 8:22 am PST) at 28º57' Pisces, on the Sabian symbol, 29 Pisces, A prism. Be a little careful what you feed your mind, because it will become part of you. [18:18] On March 2 (10:19 am PST), the Sun in Pisces squares Jupiter in Gemini. The Sun's Sabian symbol is 13 Pisces, A sword in a museum, and Jupiter's Sabian symbol is 13 Gemini, A great musician at his piano. Good opportunities can present themselves to you around this date, but use a little bit of caution before we say yes. [20:19] Listener Carmel asks, “Why are minor aspects considered minor?” Episode 260's listener question, Ptolemy, Rick Levine and Noel Tyl were mentioned.
