“War to Domesticate” - Orisanmi Burton on U.S. Prisons as Sites of Counter-Revolutionary Warfare

In this episode we welcome Orisanmi Burton back to the podcast. For this conversation, we discuss Dr. Burton's latest article, “Targeting Revolutionaries: The Birth of the Carceral Warfare Project, 1970 – 1978.” Which he describes as a supplement to his forthcoming book, Tip of the Spear: Black Radicalism, Prison Repression, and the Long Attica Revolt. This piece was recently published in the May issue of Radical History Review which is on Political Imprisonment and Confinement. In this discussion we pick up on our previous episode with Orisanmi Burton on carceral warfare. Here Burton talks about the role of Black Panther and Black Liberation Army veteran and former political prisoner Dhoruba bin Wahad's role in illuminating and analyzing the FBI's little known Prison Activists Surveillance Program (PRISACTS). Burton situates this program amid a broad set of counterinsurgency programs which operated in multiple theaters of war both internationally and domestically. Burton illustrates how within this international terrain of counterrevolutionary war, figures slipped between various programs, moving between military, intelligence, private defense contract, and domestic law enforcement and prison systems. Importantly, Burton reminds us that many state actors, including congressional bodies, presidents and governors recognized a threat of revolutionary activity in the streets in the 1960's and by the late 60's and early 70's they understood there to be a threat of revolutionary activity behind prison walls as well. To respond, they sought to use programs like PRISACTS to specifically undermine incarcerated revolutionaries. The legacy of this struggle offers a great deal to help us understand the role of US prisons today as sites of domestic warfare. Just a note that there is a second portion of this conversation which we hope to release at a later date. It is briefly referenced in the opening question. Currently we are just waiting for the publication of that second article.   Tip of the Spear: Black Radicalism, Prison Repression, and the Long Attica Revolt is available for pre-order you can find a link for that in the show notes. And the publisher does have a 40% off sale that goes through the end of May. I can't wait to have more discussion on that book upon its release. This is our 7th episode of the month of May. This week I have the pleasure to be joined by Dr Kristal Lau in a bumper, an epic, 2 HOUR LONG!!, interview talking about the benefits of "confinement practices", but with a twist, to aid your post-partum recovery.Regular listeners will have heard me talk about "zuo yue zi" or "Sitting the month" before as I strongly believe that some of the practices make complete sense from a mother's self-care perspective. The issue with any 2000 year + old practice however is, of course, that a lot of the habits are no longer necessary and some will actually hinder your recovery. This is where Dr Kristal Lau comes in. Dr. Kristal Lau, a Physician and Postpartum Wellness Consultant, is the author of ‘Postpartum 30'.  She believes in "Stronger Mothers, Stronger Families, Stronger Nations." Kristal brings over 10 years of combined experience and knowledge in clinical medicine, scientific research, and public health including her personal experiences as an Asian expat in the West, a mom of 2, and a U.S. military spouse. She delivers insights and actionable strategies for postpartum wellness, specialising in balancing traditions and cultural practices with modern postpartum care." Basically, Dr Lau has done a tonne of investigative work and research and taken out the things that are not beneficial, and updated the things that are, and put them together in "Postpartum 30", a book which took her the best part of 2 years to write. In this monster 2 hour interview we discuss almost everything post-partum related; What are the principles behind post-partum 30?The modern take on an ancient practice? Why getting support in the early post-partum stage is so important. We plan for patients leaving hospital, why don't we plan for mother's leaving hospital? The flaws in the  health system when it comes to recognising women's health issues.Where can Traditional Chinese Medicine compliment Western Medicine and how can they be intergrated? Why do we not put the mother's needs higher when we know the impact it has when we don't.Can there be equality if we don't start by equality in health? The differences between the German, French and Dutch approaches to post-partum healthcare and the US/UK approachAnd why does the research into women's post-partum health suck??And soo much more that I'll start running out of allowed characters to describe it.I have always said that someone who knows what they're talking about can talk about it for hours and Kristal is definitely in that camp. You're going to love this chat! You can find Kristal everywhere;Instagram FacebookAnd her websiteRemember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the competitions, wisdom and cute videos. Laurie Bateman Speaks Out On Her Mother's Confinement, Exposing Probate Court And Financial Extortion

Slam the Gavel welcomes new guest, Laurie Bateman to the podcast. Laurie spoke out about the TRUTH and that is that her MOTHER was a victim of People,  Agencies and Predatory Attorneys that SHOULD have SAVED her.           The unelected Judicial Officer had put a protective order surrounding her Mother's "Medical Records" that she is not to "share them," and she fully believed her wording was directed toward the ACTUAL records. The Trustee's Attorney tried to get her to sign a gag order as part of a settlement, which of course Laurie did  NOT "settle".     Other than physically "sharing" her Mother's Medical records, Laurie is not gagged. Laurie can speak freely about the experience which is still ongoing, of course due to money to be made by Attorneys. BEWARE.    There is so much to this story, so sit down and listen. The involvement of some of Laurie's  siblings in this saga is VERY important, but is no different than if a third party did this to her own mother.  But due to the "lens cover" of a "family squabble" to be used as an excuse by agencies, attorneys, doctors, mandatory reporters, etc., Laurie's Mother is a victim of the very "safety net" that should have saved her. To the State of Arizona and all the shameful individuals that participated in this expensive charade, it has been life altering for her Mother.      Had ONE, just ONE person done their job to protect her, the last 6 years would not have happened. She had a "Rock Solid" TRUST that was supposed to prevent what happened and she was never supposed to be in Probate Court, but the "TRUSTEE" filed a Petition in June of 2021 to Prevent her from being sued or charged on any of the "offenses or breeches" that she had committed due to "time-barring". Laurie and another "noticed" that a sibling objected to the 600 pages (intended to inflict emotional distress and harassment so that they would not respond). Laurie used to work as a Paralegal for a Probate Lawyer and what she saw then, in 2007-2008 was horrifying and some of the problems were in exposed by the local media and by CBS national news. Laurie thought things had changed after that, but it remains "status quo" today. No one represents "the Ward". May 10: Saint John of Ávila, Priest and Doctor 1499-1569 Optional Memorial: Liturgical Color: White Patron Saint of Andalusia Spain and Spanish clergyHis humble epitaph reads “I was a sower”Some of the most passionate and daring missionaries stayed close to home. They never sailed the high seas or crossed a snow-capped mountain. Today's saint was one of them. He was an only child, and after his parents died, Fr. John sold his family property, travelled to Seville, cut all ties, and prepared to sail to New Spain (Mexico), one more wave in that surging missionary tide which crashed on Mexico's shores throughout the 1500s. But it was not to be. St. John of Ávila never walked up the ship's plank. He never crossed the ocean. While waiting for his ship in Seville, his skills as a preacher and catechist, and his obvious holiness, were noticed by the local bishop, who convinced him to preach, teach, and evangelize in Andalusia, in Spain's rugged south.Saint John then spent himself crisscrossing a region that had only recently been conquered by the Spanish crown, and so was still populated by Spanish Muslims and Jews whose conversions to Catholicism were often more matters of expedience than religious conviction. In this newly opened mission field, our saint's broad, humanistic education perfectly matched the pastoral need. Father John harmonized orthodox theology, renaissance humanism, rigorous morality, and an insightful spirituality into a powerful synthesis which, when conveyed through his compelling preaching, moved his congregations to their very cores. As John migrated through the great cities of southern Spain - Seville, Córdoba, Granada – large numbers of the faithful followed him everywhere, eager to absorb every word that flowed from his mouth or pen.People of every class, educational level, and depth of religious commitment found St. John fascinating. In his own lifetime he came to be known as “Master Ávila” for his dominance of the sacred sciences and his vigorous pastoral efforts. He converted, or led to deeper conversion, Saint John of God, founder of the Hospitaller Order, and Saint Francis Borgia, a future Master General of the Jesuits. He was a friend of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, and advised Saint Teresa of Ávila, foundress of the Discalced Carmelites. Despite these, and many other, personal connections to famous religious orders and their founders, St. John always remained a diocesan priest, not a religious order priest, something unusual for a priest of his era with such wide influence.Saint John's erudition and solid virtues were further buttressed by his life of abject poverty and physical suffering. He was also part of that loud, pan-European cry for church reform that preceded the Council of Trent by decades. Saint John established several seminaries and colleges, provided spiritual direction to multitudes of laity, religious and seminarians, wrote a long spiritual treatise called Audi filia (“Listen daughter”) and was invited by a bishop to attend the Council of Trent as his theological adviser, though illness prevented Saint John from making the journey.John was declared Venerable in 1759, Blessed in 1893, and Saint in 1970. Proving that saints are always contemporary, he was declared a doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012 after a petition from the Spanish episcopacy for such an honor was duly studied and approved by the Vatican. The Papal Bull declaring him a Doctor of the Church states: “The teaching of John of Ávila is outstanding for its quality and precision, and its breadth and depth, which were the fruit of methodical study and contemplation together with a profound experience of supernatural realities.”In his last few years, Saint John suffered acute physical pain and was largely confined to his humble home. Confinement allowed him to finally perfect his theological and spiritual writings and to correspond with those seeking his wise counsel. The esteemed Master Ávila, a true Man of La Mancha, died clutching a crucifix, surrounded by many disciples, on May 10, 1569.Saint John of Ávila, your refined education, broad mind, and ardent love of God and Mary showed itself in all you did and said. May our lives likewise reflect our deepest Christian beliefs, inspiring our friends and families to live saintly perfection.

Cattle BarnsBill Rubis – Vice President at TenCorp, INC In 2010, they designed and built our first deep-pit cattle barn.Exploring the profitability of feeding cattle in confinement settings. As the cattle production industry has evolved over the years, there has been a significant shift to feeding cattle indoors.Just like no two cattle operations are the same, confinement buildings come in all shapes and sizes.  Typically, they can be divided into a few broad categories.  One major difference is the manure handling style: deep-pit In deep-pit buildings the cattle are on concrete slats (usually covered with rubber mats) and manure is stored underneath the building and pumped annuallybed-pack. With bed-pack buildings there is usually a concrete or earthen floor that is covered with bedding (most commonly shredded cornstalk bales).  The other key feature is the roof shape.  Cattle buildings usually have one of three roof types: Hoop (a curved roof usually covered by a canvas fabric)Mono-slope (where one eave is higher than the other)Gable (a traditional peaked roof).  Mono-slope and gable roofed buildings can be made out of both wood and steel. Why should our listeners look into confinement feeding for cattle?WeatherFeed ConversionWhy better?Consistent feed intakeSpace or Sq FtMore valuable manureWhat are some draw backs from confinement feeding?Large capital investmentAnything else?Let's now look more indepth to the types of barns you build the most of – the deep-pit barn. What are some benefits over others?      The benefits of this type of deep-pit cattle barn include:Reduction in labor expenses: 0.14 hours vs. 0.38 hours in a bed-pack confinement (per head-space/year)Elimination of bedding expensesReduction of building size: stocking density of 22 sf (in a slatted barn), vs. 40 sf (in bed pack)Reduction in manure management expenses – only requires 1 pump/yearIs this true?Increased manure nutrient levelsWhy?Increased cattle comfortHowWhat are the features of TenCorp, Inc. Standard Barns:Gable Roof StructureWith properly designed ridge openings and sidewall height, the gable roof structure provides the ideal ventilation for cattle in every season. Fresh air is drawn in from both sides of the building, and is pulled through the open ridge due to the “stack effect”.Wood-Framed StructureThe wood-framed structure provides superior strength for the cattle barn. The roof system includes 1/2″ plywood and felt paper above the purlins. This eliminates condensation issues that are common with metal building systems.Pen ConfigurationsThe pen sizes are designed to ensure that the cattle are housed as efficiently as possible, while still maintaining adequate bunk space for access to feed. Why does pen size matter? How do we determine pen and barn size? How do we determine bunk space? How do we determine the amount of water access? Now cattle feeders don't just need a good confinement to maximize their efficiency. We also need to be able to provide top quality feed to the cattle.  Why is this important?Every cattle production site needs to be able to properly store commodities for use in their operation. TenCorp, Inc. provides storage solutions for every size of operation — from silage pads, to commodity sheds.Pads-A simple, yet effective solution allows producers to stockpile grain for future use.Bunkers allow more grain to be stored in a smaller area.TenCorp, Inc. works with our customers to determine:Storage capacity needsIdeal width, based on daily usageLength of bunker requiredBunker options included poured-in-place walls, or pre-cast panels.Commodity sheds provide storage capacity for the feed stock needed for mixing in the daily feed rations. Our commodity sheds are overbuilt, in order to withstand the day-to-day use required for feeding cattle.Shed features 8-foot concrete base walls, with 10-foot framed walls above. This provides ample head-height for loading equipment. The number of storage bays and sizes are modified in order to meet our customers' needs. What else are we missing for our listeners to learn or know about feeding cattle in confinements? What's the useful life of the buildings? How do we work around regulations locally getting permits to build these? What does the future of EPA regulations or methane emissions look like for farmers?Does this include the use of aerobic digesters?Anything else? Are we working to help the processing end of the cattle industry?Any new plants going up or planned to go up?Contact informationWhat does being successful mean to you?SummaryChallenge

The postpartum period, or the “4th” trimester, can look different for many people depending on one's cultural and societal expectations for this period of time. For me, all expectations went out the window and were guided by the one and only, Momma Wu. My mom stayed with me for a month to administer my postpartum confinement period, aka 坐月子, which literally translates to “sit for one month”. Many believe this is one of the most important periods when the mother must let her body recover and be well-nourished with confinement meals high in nutrients that aid in every step of recovery. So, what did I eat? Did I sleep? Did I shower? Did it work?! I share all of that on today's episode. Here are a few shortcuts if you'd like to hop to a topic that interests you!  [01:40] – My Giggle of the Week – Getting a Nanny [04:53] – My Drool of the Week – How much time are we giving our loved ones? [06:21] – What is the postpartum confinement period? [07:46] – What Day 1 looked like [09:37] – Why are confinement period foods so important during this time? [13:30] – Confinement personal hygiene practices [18:51] – Cultural and generational differences [22:24] – Conclusion – did it work!? After you've taken a listen, let me know in the comments of our IG post, linked here, if you related to this episode in any way. If you also experienced “sitting month”, I would love to hear about it! How did your confinement period differ from my experience, or was it very similar? Did you have your mom administer your confinement period? Or did your MIL do it, which I could see being even more intense with all the things you might hold back on saying! Or did you hire a confinement nanny? And if you're planning on doing it – what are you most looking forward to? As always, thank you for allowing me to share my personal journey with you all. I have so much more to learn and would love to continue connecting and learning from all of you out there. I hope you enjoy! #SpillTheBabyTea __________________________________________ Host: Helen Wu Editor: Victoria Cheng __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: hello@asianbossgirl.com __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. At Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory scientists used 192 lasers to create a brief fusion reaction that put out more energy than it took to create it. This breakthrough — decades in the making — bodes well for future power plants that generate electricity without radioactive waste, or carbon-laden exhaust. President Biden's vision of a commercial fusion power plant in 10 years, however, faces significant obstacles — not the least of which is the view of the actual scientists that it will take several times that long to achieve. Thanksgiving turkeys. Christmas hams. The holiday season is inextricably linked to these staples of holiday indulgence. While we amble through the darkening days of the year, however, the animals whose lives will be sacrificed to feed us are far worse than they need to be. And that is so because of unnecessarily inhumane conditions on the factory farms where the majority of them are bred, live short, grueling lives, and are slaughtered assembly-line style. One of the worst aspects of factory-farm life for these doomed sentient creatures is extreme confinement. Pigs are known to receive the worst of it, when pregnant sows are kept in indecently small cages known as gestation crates. The fight against their use is one key focus of Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy, which battle is now being waged before the Supreme Court. Another soldier is Jessica Chipkin. She is the founder and president of Crate Free USA, an organization whose mission simply is to reduce the suffering of animals on factory farms. Founded in 2015, the group believes there's really no difference between cruelty inflicted on a dog, cat, bird, horse, chicken, calf or pig. They group tries to: Create awareness of the extreme and inhumane confinement of hogs, chickens, and cows on factory farms Educate consumers on how to purchase from local, sustainable farmers Advocate for legislation to eliminate extreme confinement practices She joins us in this episode to talk about her work with Trader Joe's, Aldi and Costco, as well as her youth-education effort and her mobile app. Also on the show is Scott Beckstead, our director of national campaigns, and Marty Irby, who provides a legislative update. Alongside her pregnancy and incredibly beautiful birth experience, Annabelle talks in detail about the full circle experience of losing her mother to leukaemia and welcoming her baby within the same week. Her grandmother stepped into the traditional Chinese role of caregiver for postpartum confinement which was an incredible comfort to Annabelle as she grieved.  I'm counting down the weeks till my new book, The Complete Australian Guide to Pregnancy and Birth, is published.
