In this latest episode of the Treat Addiction Save Lives Podcast, Dr. Kristin Martin shares her journey into the field of addiction medicine. She discusses how her experience as an ER physician and medical director influenced that journey and her quest for better options for and consistency in care for her patients. Dr. Martin talks about how learning from her patients about their recovery journeys broadened her understanding of addiction, and she shares how the COVID crisis affected how she cared for patients with addiction and approached addiction treatment. She explains her view that addiction affects the whole person and so should be treated holistically via integrated care – addressing primary care, mental health, and addiction needs all together in a safe and nonjudgmental environment. Dr. Martin shares her own experience with stigma as an addiction medicine provider, how that experience has changed over time, and the ways we can transform stigmatizing attitudes toward both providers and patients. Dr. Martin shares a patient's story from several years ago that continues to inspire her today and offers some thoughts for the next generation of addiction medicine providers. Dr. Kristin Martin is an accomplished osteopathic physician with extensive experience in emergency medicine, family medicine, and addiction medicine. She graduated from Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences and completed her family medicine residency through the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Frank Murphy is joined by opera singer David Crawford, who is also teaching and coaching opera students at the University of Tennessee.  Frank tells David about Taylor Swift's cover of “September.” She sings “Do you remember the 28th night of September.” Earth, Wind & Fire sing about the 21st of September, which is nine months before Frank's birthday.  Frank enjoyed watching David in the Metropolitan Opera production of Rigoletto, set in Rat-Pack era Las Vegas. David wore a custom-made jacket. HBO's Behind the Candelabra also wanted the fabric.  David played Angelotti in Marble City Opera's production of Tosca. Marble City Opera's upcoming shows are Heartbreak Express, The Infinite Energy of Ada Lovelace, and Susannah.  David has a full-time job as a lecturer and coach in vocal performance at UT. He hints about an appearance in an opera this season.  Frank has a theory that WCBS-FM in New York plays extra Billy Joel songs because he is local to the area. He also thinks that other classic hits stations around the country base their playlists on the Joel-heavy playlist of WCBS.  Frank and his wife Jere went to a late dinner at a restaurant with a popular bar. They thought they heard a terrible karaoke singer but it turned out to be an entertainer playing his keyboard and singing Billy Joel and Elton John songs. David likes to sing “Baby Got Back” when doing karaoke.  David likes watching Emmanuel the Emu on YouTube. The videos originally appeared on TikTok. Frank thinks he gets more than enough emu on YouTube because of Liberty Mutual's commercials.  Frank associates LMU with Lincoln Memorial University. Their team name is the Railsplitters and their mascot is Abe, as in Lincoln. The team name at David's high school was the Fighting Quakers, which was changed to the Hustling Quakers. His college's team was the Battling Bishops. He then went to a university with a team named the Terriers.  Frank's theory is that team mascots should be predators like the Hawks but not the Doves. David suggests a team named the Vultures. David saw a dove with a smaller bird in its talons.  Frank was the emcee for the Sweet Goodness Donut Challenge at the Tennessee Valley Fair. There seemed to be an unusually large number of volunteers eager to help with the doughnuts. He thought he was being recognized by a viewer or listener but it turned out to be his backyard neighbor.  Several teenagers have started cutting through Frank's yard from the neighboring subdivision. A homeowner from the other subdivision came up the hill to ask if they were Frank's kids because they also cut through his yard.  This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. Key Points, Top Takeaways, and Memorable Quotes“Most of the time people only get to do this for a certain period and they're spending their free time either trying to go and play and be better or watching us and just admiring our craft” 1:27“It was awesome to try as a leader on a team, understand the different cultures and try to bring all of the cultures together to where we could be a cohesive unit.” 10:23“I've started learning how I need to interact and how I need to go about tournaments and what I need to do in between time.” 25:30“I felt pressured in that first set, and I was like you know what, take a step back here. During his first year in 2020, events were hampered by the COVID-19 outbreak, nevertheless, Evan raised his national ranking from 247 to 97 with limited opportunities in tournaments. In 2021, his true rookie year on the AVP, he won 3 of the 4 AVP Next Gold Events across the country and qualified for 2 of the 3 AVP main draws. He finished with a career-high 9th in the largest tournament in the United States, the Manhattan Beach Open. Evan once again raised his ranking drastically in 2021, as he went from being a fringe top 100 player to being a top 30 player on the AVP Tour. Outside of the statistics, Evan is recognizable by his blue nose and fiery attitude which is quickly making him a favorite amongst fans. During the offseason, Evan has gotten plenty of extra opportunities to interact with fans across the country, as he has participated in many volleyball camps and trips which include the Better at Beach Volleyball Camps, South of the Border Vacations, and Volleyball Vacations. Show Notes 0:00 - What I Meant to Say Podcast Intro0:18 - Introducing Evan Cory0:41 - Who Cares About You?1:00 - Personal Stories Are My Favorite3:10 - Louisiana Volleyball Background4:24 - My First Indoor Coach Was Julie Hartley4:50 - 18s Year and Thankful to My Future Step Dad 6:20 - First Ever Commit to Lincoln Memorial9:14 - Was There Ever a Hesitation?9:35 - Change of Scenery: Cultural Shifts and Leadership11:07 - Building Relationships With Teammates11:38 - Appreciating The Best Teammate12:39 - How Men Support Each Other13:33 - The Glue Guy Story15:11 - Tell Me About Your Parents' Role17:45 - Bruce's Boot Camp18:55 - Mom Dropped Me Off Six Days a Week20:50 - I'm Going to Be a Great Hand Setter21:32 - First Tournament Win at Coconut Beach Last Year24:10 - Handling Overwhelming Intensity and AVP Next Gold Tour New Orleans Clip25:04 - Managing the Introverted Gene 26:39 - Shot of Match Point27:25 - Weather Preferences31:00 - Hurricane Documentary, Katrina, and Ida31:33 - Hurricane Katrina as a 2nd Grader34:51 - Hurricane Katrina and the Saints37:27 - Steve Gleason Blocked Punt Clip39:45 - Steve Gleason and His ALS Foundation41:02 - What is ALS?41:53 - ALS Defined on Wikipedia42:17 - Hurricane Ida and AVP Chicago43:46 - Lincoln Memorial's On Campus Community 44:40 - Town of Harriget in Cumberland Gap 45:15 - Travel Logistics and Hurricane Weather46:25 - AVP Chicago Was a Tough Tournament47:30 - Ongoing Struggle Breeds Resilience49:36 - What's the Key to Knowing Yourself That Well?50:20 - Talking Parents Divorce and Helping Out51:34 - Mother and Son Bond Made Me Be Better54:14 - Be Better Commercial54:23 - Looking for the Light55:02 - Intergenerational Stories56:22 - Growing Up Fast and Standing Up for Myself58:10 - Don't Lie to Your Kids59:31 - Coaching Junior Girls and Their Stories1:01:11 - Comparisons Hold You Back1:02:20 - The Greatest Joy is Being Yourself1:03:27 - Birth Order, First Born Vide, and Self Awareness1:04:51 - Toni's First Men's Volleyball Game 1:05:25 - “Ain't Gonna Take The South Outta Me”1:07:55 - Story in Atlanta1:09:00 - Seaside, OR Starts on Friday1:11:50 - Got to the Courts at 11:50am for a 12pm Match1:13:10 - Next Day We Won and Qualified for AVP Chicago1:14:10 - Winning Seaside to AVP Manhattan Beach Main Draw1:14:57 - Jason Asks 5 Things You Will Always Control1:15:48 - First Thing is Service Pressure1:16:26 - Physical Shape1:18:10 - Taking Care of My Body with Stretching and Recovery1:18:29 - Nutrition and All American Story1:20:11 - Were You Enjoying Cooking?1:20:50 - Last Controllable is Attitude 1:21:34 - How You're Using Your Energy1:23:28 - Joey, Cole Fiers, and the Power of Mentorship 1:24:20 - I Get Loud1:25:45 - How You Influence A Crowd1:26:35 - I Want to Be a Chameleon 1:27:43 - Stubbornness1:28:12 - Headed to Mexico with Billy Kolinske 1:31:00 - Talking Partnership Dynamics1:33:42 - Whole New Indoctrination of Fitting In1:34:55 - Be Better Featured Athletes Are Close1:35:58 - Norceca in Mexico and Facebook Following1:37:07 - What I Meant To Say / One Piece of Advice1:37:25 - Always Go, Always Try1:39:20 - My Dad Used to Say1:39:38 - Blue Nose Beach and Coaching1:42:41 - What I Meant to Say Podcast Closing Links & Where to Find Evan www.bluenosebeach.comwww.patreon.com/evancoryIG - @evancoryvolley

Coach Jeff Tungate, In this episode, you'll hear from Jeff Tungate. Coach Tungate is the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Oakland University. Coach Jeff is currently in year nine as the Head Coach of Oakland. I met Coach Tungate when I was a player in 1994. Jeff was fresh off a successful college baseball career at Oakland. As you soon will hear, Oakland University is truly home for Coach Jeff. And the love that Jeff has for Oakland is truly special. Jeff started his coaching career working for Coach Garth Pleasant at Rochester University. However, Coach Jeff really knew that he wanted to coach when he was in tenth grade playing for Michigan Hall of Fame Coach, Dan Fife. At the age of twenty nine, Jeff accepted the head coaching position for the men's program at Lincoln Memorial University. After a successful tenure, Jeff spent nine years assisting both Dane Fife at IPFW and Greg Kampe at Oakland. It is with Coach Kampe that Jeff played a massive role in helping Coach Kampe and his program reach three NCAA tournaments. And when the Oakland Athletic Director asked Coach Tungate if he would take over the women's program at Oakland, Jeff said yes instantly! Right off the bat, you are going to learn that Coach Jeff coaches to make a difference. And, he does not believe in a four-year plan for the young women that he coaches. On the contrary, he believes in a 40-year plan! This is an action packed podcast geared for young coaches. The amount of advice that Jeff provides for young coaches is truly outstanding. If you are a young assistant coach, this is a MUST LISTEN! Finally, Jeff is as authentic as they come. At the core of his coaching philosophy is being himself. And he says it so perfectly: “Be Yourself Because Everyone Else is Taken.” Coach Tungate is a wonderful coach, leader, husband, and man.
