As Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan's most recent collaboration, Sinners, is dominating the domestic and worldwide box office, we thought it would be a good time to look at their first project together, Fruitvale Station. Fruitvale is partially the telling of the tragic story of the killing of Oscar Grant in Oakland CA on New Year's Day 2009, but it's so much more. Beyond being a mere recreation of events and the conveying of the awful facts, the film is a beautiful portrait of a young man who is struggling against a system that is set against him and his own difficulties. In addition to being a star making vehicle for Michael B. Jordan, the film features incredible performances from Melonie Diaz, Octavia Spencer, and Ariana Neal. Coogler and co. received a lot of critical praise for the film which set him up to helm massive projects like Creed and the Black Panther movies for Marvel. Joining us for our look back is Chicago based film critic Zachary Lee who is a regular contributor to Roger Ebert, Letterboxd, Interview Magazine, Chicago Reader, Think Christian, and more. He's been someone we've wanted to have on the show for a while and he did not disappoint.Enjoy the show and share it with a friend!Substantive Cinema Episode ListZach Interviews Ryan CooglerFreaky Tales InterviewZach & Willem Dafoe on The Legend of OchiShoutouts:Queens of DramaThe Ballad of Wallis IslandOur Revolution by Bernie SandersMy Old AssFollow ZachInstagramEverything else!Follow UsInstagramPhilip's LetterboxdShare Your Questions/Suggestions/Feedback With Us:Email: thesubstancepod@gmail.comDM on InstagramSupport Us: Support the show with an individual donation on CashApp to $TheSubstancePod or become a monthly Patreon supporter at patreon.com/TheSubstancePod

Josh and the guys discuss his latest book, Fear Not! Why would a devout Christian watch (and love) movies like "The Shining," "Us," and "The Blair Witch Project?" Josh answers this question while weighing in on what he believes are universal aspects behind the effectiveness and enduring popularity of horror flicks. And if all that isn't enough, the guys get up to their usual tricks by presenting Josh with one of the toughest rounds of Kick Two, Pick Two ever. Would you be able to choose only two of your four favorite horror films, throwing the other two forever into the Forbidden Zone? Can Josh?

"Christians should not be talking about politics!" is what I heard when I was a young Christian. Is that true? How can Christians be engaged in politics in a biblically faithful way? What does it mean to be a political disciple? Should we as Christians stay out of politics? These are questions that we all must wrestle with if we are to have an effective witness in the world. Join Travis and Dr. Vincent Bacote as they discuss what it means to be a political disciple in a polarized world. Dr. Vincent Bacote is a Professor of Theology and the Director of the Center for Applied Christian Ethics at Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL.He is the author of Reckoning with Race and Performing the Good News: In Search of a Better Evangelical Theology (2020), The Political Disciple: A Theology of Public Life (2015), The Spirit in Public Theology: Appropriating the Legacy of Abraham Kuyper (2005), and has contributed to books including On Kuyper (2013), Aliens in the Promised Land (2013), Keep Your Head Up (2012) and Prophetic Evangelicals (2012).He is a regular columnist for Comment Magazine and contributes to other magazines, including Books and Culture, Christianity Today, Think Christian and re:generation quarterly, and journals such as Christian Scholars Review, Urban Mission and the Journal for Christian Theological Research. He is a member of the Evangelical Theological Society and the Society of Christian Ethics. He resides in the Chicago area with his family. Travis and Vincent discuss what it means to be political, why the church needs to have a robust political theology (how God wants us to go about politics that is biblically faithful), common grace, and how our political theology has changed over time, as well as the very purpose of government. Vincent also discusses some other theologians and how they have shaped how we see politics today, names like Abraham Kuyper, John Howard Yoder, and Stanley Hauerwas. While they may be unfamiliar, they have affected how we view and even engage the political process today. Vincent also gives Travis some lessons on Jazz. In this episode of the Film & Whiskey podcast, Bob and Brad have the pleasure of being joined by author and film critic Josh Larsen to discuss his new book Fear Not!: A Christian Appreciation of Horror. Larsen helps our host dive into the realm of horror films and their unique relationship with the Christian experience. As the senior producer of Think Christian and the co-host of the Filmspotting podcast, Larsen brings a fresh perspective on how Christians can appreciate the artistry and theological implications of horror. Beyond the film talk, our hosts break mid-conversation to indulge in the rich flavors of three distinctive whiskeys. (0:00) Intro (02:35) The Theology in Horror Movies: Unpacking "Fear Not: A Christian Appreciation of Horror" (25:15) Castle & Key Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey: A Nod to Heritage (30:55) Tasting Notes on Copper & Kings Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (33:45) Savoring the Bardstown Bourbon Company Collaborative Series Goose Island Bourbon County (37:20) Final Thoughts and Recommendations for Movie Nights Horror films, often brimming with monster movies, creature features, and spine-chilling slashers, have always resonated deeply with our innermost fears. Josh Larsen's "Fear Not!" artfully combines critical observation and theological reflection, providing movie fans with a fresh lens to view iconic films like "Get Out," "The Shining," and "The Babadook." As we delve into the Christian appreciation of fright films and the ways they echo biblical themes, listeners will be treated to a unique blend of cinema discussion and whiskey tasting. With each whiskey—whether it's the flavor-forward remix of the Kentucky tradition in Copper & Kings, the rich chocolate malt notes in Bardstown Bourbon's collaboration with Goose Island, or Castle & Key's nod to its historic Old Taylor Distillery heritage—we're offered a sensory profile that beautifully complements our deep film analysis. Featured Whiskeys: Castle & Key Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey: The first proprietary bourbon from Castle & Key in nearly five decades, blending barrels to create a sensory profile that reflects both heritage and innovation. Copper & Kings Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey: A blend aged in American Apple Brandy barrels, offering a unique taste experience where classic bourbon notes meet traditional brandy. Bardstown Bourbon Company Collaborative Series Goose Island Bourbon County: A limited release with stout-soaked staves leading to flavors of roasted malt, cacao, and allspice. This year's Old Books with Grace Lent series, called “A Book that Changed Me,” offers four different conversations with guests on a book of their choice that changed them, made them think deeply about transformation, brought them closer to truth. Books can be mirrors—they can help us to consider ourselves in new light. Books invite us into conversation and reflection we would not have known to participate in without their guidance. Each of the guests in this series has chosen a book that invited them into reflection, remembrance, and self-knowledge. Each conversation is quite different—some more personal, others less—and the books span from the Middle Ages to the 1960s. The last guest of the series is Claude Atcho, who has chosen to talk about the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray by the witty, wonderful Oscar Wilde.  Claude Atcho resides in Charlottesville, VA where he lives with his family, serves as a pastor of Church of the Resurrection, and enjoys coaching his kids in basketball and soccer. In addition to his preaching and pastoral work, Claude speaks and writes about literature, film, music, and culture from a theological perspective. His writing has been featured at The Witness: A Black Christian Collective, Think Christian, and Christ and Pop Culture. His writing often lives at the intersection of theology, culture, and African American experience. He is the author of Reading Black Books: How African American Literature Can Make Our Faith More Whole and Just.

About Jessica I'm a writer. I write poetry as well as creative non-fiction, essays that examine aspects of my life or the world around me and try to find the deeper meaning and connection in what I observe. I also write about media and culture, faith, and the intersection of the two. I wrote a sort of sermon once and it went viral. I write for places like Sojourners,  Think Christian, The Good Men Project, the Madeleine L'Engle Blog, Our Bible App, and Together Rising. I'm an author. I have three published books and am working on my fourth. The Long Night, Readings and Stories to Help You Through Depression came out on May 19th, 2020 through Broadleaf Books, and its companion book, Blessings for the Long Night: Poems and Meditations to Help You through Depression will be out on April 19th, 2022, also through Broadleaf Books. In between those I self-published the “peace poems” I'd been writing into Twitter every evening for a year as 365 Days of Peace: Benedictions to End Your Day in Gentleness and Hope. I also created a journal to go with 365 Days of Peace. I'm a theologian. I have a BA in World Religions and a Master of Divinity in Christianity. I've traveled to Israel, Egypt, Turkey, Morocco, and Europe to study Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. I did part time ministry for many years — leading worship, teaching the Bible, leading discussion groups, working with teens, and teaching English as a second language. After I graduated I went to work for a campus ministry, doing interfaith outreach, but burnt out after a year and a half of fundraising and training. I try to use my education and experience in my writing, both to deepen my perspective and to minister to my readers. I'm an editor. In my editing work I help scholars from all over the world who are working on academic dissertations. I've also edited books, journal articles, newsletters, cover letters, and more. Find out more here. I'm a workshop leader. I've developed and teach the Finding Your Voice Writing Workshops for aspiring writers who struggle with depression or other mental illness.   https://jessicakantrowitz.com

In this episode, I team up again with Karen Swallow Prior, this time to discuss what many people call "the great American novel" Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. We talk about sin, guilt, and repression, and how Hawthorne's story is more complicated and interesting than most people make it out to be. As always, I hope you enjoy our conversation. Karen Swallow Prior is Research Professor of English Literature and Christianity and Culture at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. She is the author of Booked: Literature in the Soul of Me (T. S. Poetry Press, 2012), Fierce Convictions: The Extraordinary Life of Hannah More—Poet, Reformer, Abolitionist (Thomas Nelson, 2014), and On Reading Well: Finding the Good Life through Great Books (Brazos, 2018). She is co-editor of Cultural Engagement: A Crash Course in Contemporary Issues (Zondervan 2019) and has contributed to numerous other books. Her writing has appeared at Christianity Today, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, First Things, Vox, Relevant, Think Christian, The Gospel Coalition, Religion News Service, Books and Culture and other places. She and her husband live on a 100-year old homestead in central Virginia with sundry horses, dogs, and chickens. And lots of books. Jennifer Frey is an associate professor of philosophy and Peter and Bonnie McCausland Faculty Fellow at the University of South Carolina. She is also a fellow of the Institute for Human Ecology at the Catholic University of America and the Word on Fire Institute. Prior to joining the philosophy faculty at USC, she was a Collegiate Assistant Professor of Humanities at the University of Chicago, where she was a member of the Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts and an affiliated faculty in the philosophy department. She earned her Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh, and her B.A. in Philosophy and Medieval Studies (with a Classics minor) at Indiana University, in Bloomington, Indiana. She has published widely on action, virtue, practical reason, and meta-ethics, and has recently co-edited an interdisciplinary volume, Self-Transcendence and Virtue: Perspectives from Philosophy, Theology, and Psychology. Her writing has also been featured in Breaking Ground, First Things, Fare Forward, Image, Law and Liberty, The Point, and USA Today. She lives in Columbia, SC, with her husband, six children, and chickens. You can follow her on Twitter @ jennfrey. Sacred and Profane Love is a podcast in which philosophers, theologians, and literary critics discuss some of their favorite works of literature, and how these works have shaped their own ideas about love, happiness, and meaning in human life.
