Hollywood has made clear their opinion of sales professionals. From the hard driver on Glengarry Glen Ross to the dishonest philanderers of Tin Men to the spastic incompetence of Tommy Boy. People can't help but be influenced by these depictions. But we must also recognize the part actual salespeople play in swaying opinion. Each time a salesperson acts dishonestly, he or she contributes to the negative persona of our profession. Here's a chance to check your integrity as Scott and I welcome sales and leadership expert, Steve Keating to discuss Ethics in Selling on Episode 651 of the Winning at Selling podcast.

Robin's been a fixture of the spirits education world for as long as I can remember - I think we first met when he was still shepherding Compass Box Whisky for the US, at a bar show in Paris. He's a remarkable raconteur - like a lot of the ex-actors littering the spirits industry - and a true expert across the broad world of spirits, but what really sets him apart is his structured, masterful approach to actually selling, a skill he learned in Silicon Valley and took with him to the liquor industry. Unlike most people who've been terrified of selling due to watching movies like "Glengarry Glen Ross" and "Tin Men", Robin respects sales people - and helps create great ones as part of his consulting services. As he says "If you have something in your hand, a sales person put it there". We had a great chat about his origin story, about truly honing your own brand, his move into the liquor biz, and the state of the industry. We didn't even talk about his excellent book "The Complete Whiskey Course", so for sure we'll have to have him back on to catch up. Why are the true stats about men hidden from us? Why is it so controversial to speak openly about stats that portray men as either heroes or victims? Why is media rhetoric such one way traffic in condemning men and how damaging is this misrepresentation to ALL genders in both the short and long term? Why are so many important topics needlessly genderized causing damaging polarisation? Exploring the 'unpopular other half of gender equality and mens mental health' is the mission of The Tin Men...welcome to this perspective shifting conversation with founder George. Jeremy Tan, Managing Partner and Cofounder of Tin Men Capital, and Jeremy Au talked about three main points: 1. Cambridge Engineer & Harvard MBA: Jeremy Tan shared his journey from a playful student to getting into a life-changing education at Cambridge. His early life goal of becoming a refinery chemical engineer shifted after a pivotal internship, which propelled him into finance with Morgan Stanley investment banking and later private equity. Getting an MBA at Harvard Business School opened up many doors for him, especially in building a global alumni network that later allowed him to secure essential early LP funding for his VC fund. 2. Founding Tin Men Capital: Jeremy shared what catalyzed his inspiration to finally make a leap of faith and launch a VC fund focused on B2B technology startups in Southeast Asia. Raising the first fund in a nascent VC market was challenging, and he shared his perspective on how to be successful as an emerging manager. He also shared the importance of understanding local industries and maintaining a tight, selective portfolio. 3. Fatherhood Insights: Jeremy reflected on how becoming a parent influenced how he now manages partnerships in business. He noted the importance of communication and empathy, and advocates for a balance between personal and professional aspirations. Just as it did in his own personal transformation journey and relationship with his children, directive approaches often fail when collaborating with founders. They also discussed his initial challenges of settling in at Cambridge, the influence of childhood experiences on leadership styles, and his personal coping mechanisms for stress. In this episode we return to the subject of whether AIs will become conscious, or, to use a word from the title of the latest book from our guest today, whether AIs will become sentient. Our guest is Nicholas Humphrey, Emeritus Professor of Psychology at London School of Economics, and Bye Fellow at Darwin College, Cambridge. His latest book is “Sentience: the invention of consciousness”, and it explores the emergence and role of consciousness from a variety of perspectives. The book draws together insights from the more than fifty years Nick has been studying the evolution of intelligence and consciousness. He was the first person to demonstrate the existence of “blindsight” after brain damage in monkeys, studied mountain gorillas with Dian Fossey in Rwanda, originated the theory of the “social function of intellect”, and has investigated the evolutionary background of religion, art, healing, death-awareness, and suicide. Among his other awards are the Martin Luther King Memorial Prize, the Pufendorf Medal, and the International Mind and Brain Prize. The conversation starts with some reflections on the differences between the views of our guest and his long-time philosophical friend Daniel Dennett, who had died shortly before the recording took place.Selected follow-ups:The website of Nicholas HumphreyThe book Sentience: The Invention of ConsciousnessHow did consciousness evolve? - Recording of talk at the Royal InstitutionThe book Consciousness Explained by Daniel DennettPenrose triangle (article contains "real impossible triangles")Keith Frankish (philosopher of mind)The psychonic theory of consciousness - a theory included in the 1929 edition of Encyclopaedia BritannicaLawrence (Larry) Weiskrantz - the supervisor of Nicholas HumphreyBlindside patient 'TN'The Tin Men by Michael FraynWhat's it like to be an AI: Anil Seth on London Futurists PodcastJoe Simpson (mountaineer)The New York Declaration on Animal ConsciousnessScientific Declaration on Insect Sentience and WelfareRupert SheldrakeAlternative Natural Philosophy Association (ANPA)Music: Spike Protein, by Koi Discovery, available under CC0 1.0 Public Domain Declaration
George @thetinmen and I had a great chat on the podcast, taking a deep dive into male mental health and society's blind spots. In this episode, we navigate some of the complexities of male mental health, societal expectations, and the pressing need for a balanced conversation on gender dynamics. From the misunderstood narratives of male body image to the legal inequities faced by men and boys, we uncover the stories that seldom make the headlines. I really hope you choose to listen and be part of a conversation that challenges the norm and sheds light on the often unspoken and ugly discussions. Noel catches up Alan Blumenfeld. If there was a television guest star hall of fame, Alan would be first ballot. The actor has had an amazing 40-year career, having guest starred on Diff'rent Strokes, Family Ties (seven times), Growing Pains, Cheers and Roseanne to name a few. Perhaps his most memorable guest star appearance was portraying Mr. Ha Ha on The Golden Girls. On the silver screen, Alan had roles in Wargames, Friday The 13th Part VI, Tin Men and Righteous Kill. If Hollywood needs someone to play a Rabbi, Alan is your guy, having do it on multiple occasions.
In this episode I'm joined by George Horne from The Tin Men, an advocate for men and boys in the UK. Together we did a deep dive into the main issues facing men today. Including male suicide, falling behind in education and at work, and the female on male domestic abuse. George explains why he campaigns on men issues and highlights a lot of biases society now has against men whether it's in prisons, job applications or in family courts. More importantly, he also says what needs to be done and how we need to change our thinking if we want to start putting this right. Join Paul this week as he speaks with George from The Tin Men about many soceital issues today that are not often discussed yet significantly impact men's mental health. Why is male suicide at the highest it has ever been? With many of these conversations descending into emotion and chaos we aim to promote a data based conversation. We talk about... Male suicide Male homelessness That boys and men are doing increasinly worse within education Sexual Violence on Men Some of the laws that fail men While we so rightly challenge some of the more well known gender injustices it's important to also have conversatinos around some of the lesser known aspects. You can find The Tin Men on Instagram (@thetinmen) and on his podcast named The Tin Men on all major platforms. Murli is a co-founder of Tin Men Capital driving Tin Men's investment strategy and market analysis functions. He was previously with Temasek Holdings, JAFCO, and INSEAD. Murli has been a board member of more than 25 venture-backed firms since 2008 across an array of enterprise tech sectors, countries (Singapore, India, Australia, and the US), and stages (from pre-revenue startups to 2000+ employee firms). His first board roles came just as the global financial crisis began, which was a brutal crash course in the vagaries startups must navigate. He has been quoted widely in the media and conferences. Murli studied engineering at the National University of Singapore on a full scholarship and has been mucking about on the Internet since the early 90s. He is a self-taught (but sadly lapsed) Perl coder and once built a neural network model from scratch in the early 2000s. Murli is proud to have secured a gold medal for Singapore at the 2018 Asian Cycling Championships. In this week's episode I'm joined by George, founder of The Tin Men. The Tin Men is a platform dedicated to widening perspectives and conversations around political advocacy for men and boys. During this episode, we explore both the expectations and the stereotypes of men in relationships and dating, as well as the ways in which we can better use language and linguistics to positively step away from identity politics. Kevin and Thom today on a strange Tuesday gameday. They previewed and picked the game giving two predictions...one with Garrett Gilbert at QB and one with either Heinicke or Allen at the helm. They talked about a lot of other things too including the movie "Tin Men" and the prospect of a new football stadium in Virginia. Oh...and Kevin defended Kirk also. Learn more about your ad choices. In this conversation I sit down with George from The Tin Men to discuss issues that disproportionately affect men. We both find that in feminist spaces conversations about men tend to be drowned out by slogans that say "men did this to themselves," or "well the patriarchy affects men too," but is that why men are living shorter lives? Or have fallen behind in education? Or die by suicide more? How can we have these conversations and integrate them into our lives without it taking away from other issues that we're talking about?
