Do you struggle with binge eating, and no matter what you've tried, you just can't stop? Or maybe you've tried to lose weight by eating less and then threw in the towel because it was just too hard? This week, Jenn is talking to therapist Heather Heynen about how to make progress for the long run, not just for a short period of time. Today, Jenn is joined by therapist Heather Heynen to discuss overcoming binge eating, restricting, and yo-yo dieting once and for all. She explains some common causes behind eating disorders for many people, and the steps that can be taken to heal our relationship with food. Heather breaks down some somatic practices that you can try, as well as how to name your feelings so you are able to lower the temperature on them and recover without leaning on something else, like food or substances, to numb those feelings. She shares the valuable difference between state and story, and why changing your story can change your habits...for good! Tune in to learn more about these wonderful tools! The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [6:28] How does binge eating, restricting, yo-yo dieting and anxiety all play into Healther's work today?[8:15] How often does Heather see these issues as a mental health therapist?[10:00] What are some of the biggest mistakes Heather sees people making when it comes to trying to change their behavior?[12:38] What are somatic practices and why are they so much more effective?[16:01] What is big T trauma vs. little t trauma?[20:05] Where do you start with healing your relationship with food?[24:49] How do these tools lead to long term behavior changes?[26:27] If you process your feelings more in your head, what can you do to work through it?[28:39] What is state vs. story?[32:02] How can we help children feel their feelings or tolerate distress better?[34:39] What lessons has Heather been able to learn through her solo bike packing trips?[38:24] How can you cultivate giving yourself grace?KEY TAKEAWAYS: When you learn how to feel and experience your emotions, you will no longer need other things, i.e. food or substances, to numb and avoid those feelings.Long term results come from consistency, being patient with yourself, giving yourself a lot of compassion and grace throughout the process. You either hold your emotions in your body (energy) or in your head (thoughts). Learning how to process both of them can lead to freedom from unwanted habits.QUOTES: [8:32] “The biggest disordered eating pattern is binge eating disorder, overeating, emotional eating, that sort of thing. In my practice, I do specialize in treating that, so I personally see it, but if we look at statistics, that is definitely the biggest type of disordered eating that we have going on.” - Heather Heynen“I think anybody can do anything for a finite period of time...then it becomes a function of how we can create the things we can do for an infinite amount of time." – Jenn Trepeck[13:03] “Our thoughts create our feelings, our feelings drive our behaviors, our behaviors give us our results, so you can understand why working with the thoughts and shifting to the more helpful ones is really important when we're talking about sustainable behavior change.” - Heather Heynen[13:42] “Our feelings, our emotions really are energy within our bodies, and if we don't learn how to process emotion, it gets stuck. It gets stuck within the body and it can lead to physical issues with the body, it does lead to weight gain, that's another physical component. It can lead to a lot of anxiety and depression, so processing emotions is really important.” - Heather Heynen[24:58] “Binge eating is related to emotion, meaning we are eating to try to numb, we're eating to try to change an emotion that we're feeling. We don't want to feel whatever it is that we're feeling. So if that is one of the biggest reasons that we eat, we get triggered to binge all these things and we want to stop that long term, then learning the skill of feeling our feelings, even the horrible, awful feelings, just learning to feel them and experience them, it's amazing.” - Heather Heynen[28:56] “Learning to have this more helpful narrative, helpful stories, can really help us create a state of being that's a lot more peaceful. But the other side of the coin is that if we can create a more peaceful state, then our story happens to be more helpful as well.” - Heather HeynenRESOURCES:Tickets to Salad with a Side of Fries LIVE in NYC on July 25, 2024Jenn Trepeck's Episode on Weight Loss and Wellness For RealBecome A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCES:Heather Heynen's WebsiteHeather Heynen's InstagramHeather Heynen's FacebookHeather Heynen Wellness YouTubeWeight Loss and Wellness For Real Podcast GUEST BIO:Heather Heynen is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Mental Health, Qualified Mental Health Professional, Life Coach, FMS Certified Exercise Professional, Health Coach, Podcaster & Writer. Right after an overeating incident or binge, once of the most helpful things to do is look back and consider what lessons we want to take from the experience. Maybe you discovered a situation you don't want to put yourself in again, or a choice you don't want to repeat. Or, perhaps your regrettable incident revealed a supportive routine, which when absent (like a good night's sleep) contributes to eating difficulty. So you chastise and remind yourself that you know better. But before long, you find yourself squarely seated in the same pool of regret, having been tripped up by the identical situation. Is there a way out of this frustration? Absolutely. Let's get to it. Sometimes we need accountability. Sometimes we need specific strategies, new tools, or a bit of help. If you want help to become a confident, sensible eater with 1:1 personalized attention, sign up at ConfidentEaters.com.

The song won the awards for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song at the 2015 Grammy Awards. When the six members of THE ISLEY BROTHERS disbanded (1984), Marvin and Ernie Isley joined CHRIS JASPER and formed ISLEY-JASPER-ISLEY. Without this crucial musical component, THE ISLEY BROTHERS were no longer a self-produced, self-contained group. CHRIS JASPER brought his “unique sound” and musical talents to ISLEY-JASPER-ISLEY, and topped the charts singing lead vocals on “Caravan of Love” (1985), a song that was covered by English recording group, the Housemartins, an international #1 pop hit. “Caravan” was also used in commercials as part of a Dodge Caravan advertising campaign. He was also awarded a CEBA Award For Excellence for a Miller Brewing Company commercial. The music for that commercial formed the basis for “Brother to Brother” from the “Different Drummer” album, which supported the anti-apartheid struggle going on in South Africa at that time. His music has also been used in radio and television commercials, most recently “Who's That Lady” (Swiffer) and “Between The Sheets” (L'Oreal). When ISLEY-JASPER-ISLEY disbanded (1987), CHRIS JASPER brought his “unique sound” to his own solo projects, topping the charts with “SuperBad,” a song promoting the value of education. CHRIS JASPER has continued to write songs and produce his own R&B/Gospel music, as well as other artists, for his independent record label, Gold City Records (www.goldcitymusic.com). CHRIS JASPER's music has been covered and sampled by hundreds of new and established recording artists, including Whitney Houston, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Fantasia, Will Smith, Alliyah, Queen Latifah, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Natalie Cole, and the list goes on and on. His music has also been used in television and radio commercials. In 1992, CHRIS JASPER, along with the other members of THE ISLEY BROTHERS, was inducted into the ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME. Chris Jasper was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 30, 1951, the youngest of seven siblings. While growing up in Cincinnati, Chris studied classical piano starting at the age of 7 years old. After graduating from high school in Cincinnati, he moved to New York to study music composition at the Juilliard School of Music. Chris received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in music composition from C.W. Post College in New York, where he studied under noted jazz pianist and composer, Dr. Billy Taylor. He subsequently received a Juris Doctorate degree from Concord University School of Law. THE JASPER/ISLEY CONNECTION The Jasper and Isley families lived in the same apartment complex in Cincinnati, Ohio. Chris's older sister, Elaine, married Rudolph Isley. The three older Isley brothers, Rudolph, O'Kelly and Ronald, formed a vocal trio (“The Isley Brothers”) and relocated to Teaneck, New Jersey. While temporarily living in New Jersey as a teenager, Chris and the two younger Isley brothers, Marvin and Ernie, formed a band, “The Jazzmen Trio”, that played locally in New Jersey. Chris played keyboards, Ernie played guitar and Marvin played the bass. Along with Chris, Ernie and Marvin also attended C.W. Post College in New York. While in college, Chris, Marvin and Ernie played on the older Isley Brothers recordings, including “It's Your Thing”. Chris formed his own record label, Gold City Records, and released two albums as a CBS-associated label. His debut single as a solo artist, “Superbad” reached #1 on the R&B charts. Eventually, Marvin and Ernie returned to record under the Isley Brothers group name, and Chris continued his solo career, releasing a total of 9 solo albums to date, including 4 urban contemporary gospel CDs. Chris has also produced a number of artists for his Gold City label, and has worked with such notable artists as Chaka Khan, writing and producing a song for her CK album (“Make It Last”). The most recent addition to Gold City is Chris's son, Michael Jasper, who released his debut album “Addictive” on the Gold City label in 2010 at the age of 16. “Addictive” was written and recorded by Michael, and co-produced by Chris, who accompanies Michael on the talkbox and background vocals. Michael's is called CD "Dreams". Chris has received numerous gold and platinum albums and music industry awards, including the BET lifetime achievement award. In 1992, Chris, along with the other members of The Isley Brothers, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 2016, Chris was awarded the National R&B Society Lifetime Achievement Award, Songwriters Hall of Fame. Chris also received numerous ASCAP awards.. My Business On Purpose
578: How Do You Motivate Your Team…And Make It Last?

My Business On Purpose

Play Episode Listen Later May 9, 2022 5:58

A business owner called me and said simply, “my people are getting their rear ends kicked right now, do you know of a good motivational speaker?” Within a few weeks, I show up ready to deliver a powerful talk on the RPMs of leadership (repetition, predictability, and meaning) and then follow it up with our super fun and engaging DISC workshop so that this team of project managers, purchasers, warranty care members, and general managers could work through the importance of speaking to people the way they wished to be spoken to. We worked through the realities of competing personalities and, in some cases, warring agendas. It was a powerful two-hour window of time and left each of the team members trying to understand their colleagues, customers, and trade partners better. But then what? The motivation was there.  The new insights, the curiosities, and the nuances were all uncovered, evaluated, and role-played to some extent. But now what? A two-hour workshop is part insight, part motivation.  Insights can spark a lifetime of curiosity, motivation will typically only ignite a short-term explosion that can leave a mark… but then go away. How do we take the short term value of motivation and merge it with the long term necessities of repetition, predictability, and meaning so that what we set in motion one day, like a rocket lifting to space, can be strategically placed into a cyclical orbit that brings long term value? First, we must remember that motivation is momentary. Some things in our home and business lives simply don't last very long, and yet have the power to wake us up to something that could change our lives. We see this played out medically when a friend has a sudden, non-fatal heart attack.  That momentary situation acts as a wake-up call by which the patient now has a decision, use the heart attack as a catalyst to repetitively change their lifestyle, or simply reflect on this near-death moment as a cool story, but little else. Cardiology circles are filled with stories of patients who did not respond to the wake-up call with long-term, sustained changes.  Sure, they had the gym membership, and purchased the diet foods… but on Tuesday, when it mattered, they opted for donuts and video games on the couch.  When you bring in a shot of motivation, it must be followed with a drip of repetition. The second way to bring long-term value from a singular motivational event is, there must be a repetitive home for the long-tail of motivation. The smoothest and most natural repetitive check in to a solitary motivational event is the agenda-driven, leader-led, weekly team meeting. This predictable, repetitive event can become home to the ongoing follow-up to the singular motivation… if you make it so. Business offices are filled with team members who wished that their leadership would hold to a powerful, repetitive, agenda-driven team meeting. The reason we mock meetings is because most meetings are wasting our precious time.  It is not the meeting (by definition) that is bad, it is the poor leadership of that meeting that wastes what is precious to us. Most clients we work with have spent time, effort, and energy to make their meetings meaningful and important.  There are still a few trying to play dress-up with their meetings and talking a bigger game than they are living.  It's up to you, if you want a culture you can be proud of, and your co-workers will want to invite their friends to be a part of… then the team meeting will become a priority. It is the one place where your entire team can wrestle through agenda issues, and get on the same page with the motivation that you have been sharing. As always, in making motivation last, remember that hail-mary play calling is not a winning strategy. Watch any sport and you will only see the equivalent of a hail-mary executed in moments of real desperation, and typically at the very end of the game. When successful, we are lured into believing that we can operate this way all of the time.  Some even believe that certain players or teams can rely on hail mary's because “they are skilled at it”.  Real skill comes through the daily, repetitive, predictable, play calling of forethought game-planning and scenario scouting.  Hail mary's are a losing strategy long term. Go ahead, hire your motivational speaker…but not until you have a long-term plan for implementing the short-term shot.
