Laci and Matt are at war with each other like the gunters are at war with the villainous Nolan Sorrento in the Oasis of Ready Player One. And it's all because they can't agree on this movie! Is this the first BAD Spielberg movie the show has covered this summer? Or is it another classic?   First we get into the history of the movie, starting with the career of novelist Ernist Cline. From his humble beginnings as a slam poet in Austin to his screenwriting career working with Harvey Weinstein on the film Fanboys, to writing Ready Player One and creating bidding wars for both the publishing and movie rights, Ernie is a true American success story. And then he got Steven Spielberg to direct the thing! Wow! Will Spielberg use this opportunity to do some crucial self-examination about the role he has played in shaping pop culture, in emphasizing nostalgia and sentiment and comfort amongst moviegoers everywhere, keeping them in a perpetual state of adolescence? Or does he just use the cool toys and giant budget to make a really cool-looking movie?   Then: The movie itself. Has there been a wetter paper towel of a leading man than Tye Sheridan? Future megastar Olivia Cooke is right there, man. Give her the reigns. Anyway, enough editorializing. Nikola Todorovic always wanted to make films, but encountered a familiar problem: the sci-fi screenplays he wrote would require $200 million budgets. Aiming to reduce this cost, Nikola co-founded Wonder Dynamics with Ready Player One actor Tye Sheridan to develop Wonder Studio, a platform that simplifies the time-consuming tasks involved in adding CG characters to live-action plates. Nikola breaks down the creation of Wonder Studio, how it ingests and analyses scenes to allow for easy export to software, including Unreal and Maya, and how it generates 3D characters. He also talks through the process of setting up Wonder Dynamics, from its beginnings as a startup company to its acquisition by Autodesk — and what this means for its user base.

Actor Tye Sheridan may not consider himself a technology expert, but his knowledge of visual effects (VFX) processes led him to cofound AI-driven startup Wonder Dynamics. With the company's new product, Wonder Studio, creators can upload 2D video and transform it into 3D animations at a fraction of the cost of the motion-capture animation process typically used by Hollywood studios.  Tye joins this episode to talk about the genesis of his company, plus he shares his views on artificial intelligence's impact on creativity in the film industry and the opportunities it can offer creators. Read the episode transcript here. Guest bio: Tye Sheridan is an actor and producer who has appeared in a number of films, including Ready Player One and X-Men: Apocalypse. In 2017, with Nikola Todorovic, he cofounded Wonder Dynamics, a technology company that's creating AI-powered film production tools. Its proprietary AI software, Wonder Studio, uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to automatically animate, light, and compose computer-generated characters in live-action scenes. The company is on a mission to build AI tools that enable creators to produce studio-level visual effects and CGI-heavy content for a significantly lower cost than the traditional motion-capture process. Welcome back to your favorite podcast about some of the biggest bombs in film history. In this week's episode, we discuss one of the biggest cinematic flops for 20th Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment, 2019's Dark Phoenix. This is the fourth installment of the prequel films and the 12th installment in the X-Men film series. Dark Phoenix had all the trademarks of a bomb such as numerous re-shoots based on test screenings, studio mergers, uninterested actors, a first-time director, shifting management, and poor marketing. Do all these factors make Dark Phoenix a bomb? It's been a while since true crime writer Ellison Oswalt had a bestseller, and the strain is starting to show on Ellison, his wife Tracy, and their kids Trevor and Ashley.  Local law enforcement isn't keen on him, either, as his last few books didn't cast them in too fond a light. So Ellison and his family take up residence in a modest Pennsylvania ranch house with something of a history – something we learn when we watch as a family is lynched in the house's back yard.  Unfortunately, this may be his last chance at the big time, so Ellison neglects to inform Tracy of this, and when things start going bump in the night, and the home movies left behind reveal ominous clues about a killer's identity, Ellison finds himself turning from the hunter to the hunted.  A helpful deputy steps in to assist, as well as a professor of the occult, but by the time they reveal their own information, the situation has devolved from strange… to sinister. MOVIE DISCUSSION:   ericnevins.com  Eric Nevins from the Halfway There Podcast, and the Christian Podcast Association, joins Melvin and Dan in discussing one of Terrance Malick's most popular films, if not his most popular film ever! Semi-autobiographical, semi-retelling of the book of Job, semi-conventional narrative; The Tree of Life offers a lot to chew on, and the three of them eagerly dive in!  Topics: (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 28-minutes detailing movies we've changed opinion on, both films we've liked and now dislike and also disliked but now like, and why. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Eric shares about his podcast, what drew him to amplifying Christian voices, and the particular way he prefers to do it.The Tree of Life, as Melvin puts it, is usually someone's pastor's favorite movie. While everyone watched The Tree of Life for the episode, Melvin specifically watched the extended cut of The Tree of Life exclusive to its Criterion release. It contains an additional 50+ minutes. The Tree of Life requires a bit of work from its audience, demanding they put in some effort in to comprehending its floating imagery, whispered monologues, and near-constant Christian allusions. There's a very clear, very obvious three-act structure to The Tree of Life, and each part of the film offers something different in terms of style and engagement. The second act is largely what people will connect with.Eric, Daniel, and Melvin each discuss The Tree of Life's artistically ambiguous ending, and what it means to them.Terrence Malick as a storyteller is routinely critical of industrialization, often using nature and natural beauty to showcase tranquility, glory, and peace. The Tree of Life keeps in conversation two ideas: the Way of Nature and the Way of Grace. The gang tries to discern what these represent, and how they communicate.Recommendations:With: Reimagining the Way You Relate to God by Skye Jethani (Book)The Church Play Cinematic Universe (YouTube Video)Kevin Can F**K Himself (TV Series)Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! Ready Player One was adapted for the screen five years ago. This week Jay and Shua look back at what worked, what was changed, and the fun of going to the OASIS. Plus, we create our own Easter egg challenges with our pop-culture obsessions on Enjoy Stuff!   What would your pop-culture references be if you created an Easter egg challenge in the OASIS? Come with us in a world of pure imagination as we look back at the movie Ready Player One.    News Dungeons and Dragons The Legend of Drizzt Visual Dictionary now out by Michael Witwer Disney+ Cancels Willow After One Season…Or does it? (yeah, probably) Send in your favorite jokes to EnjoyStuff@RetroZap.com and it may be featured on an upcoming show   Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Jay has been catching up on films nominated for this year's Oscars. This week he watched the surprises in Martin McDonagh's Banshees of Inisherin. He enjoyed the themes and symbolism in the wild story of two friends whose relationship suddenly changes and fingers are threatened. Shua surprises absolutely nobody by enjoying season 3 of The Mandalorian. It's feeling very Star Wars to him. What do you think?   Enjoy Movies!    In 2011, Ernest Cline released his homage to the pop-culture he grew up with, Ready Player One. This dystopian world became obsessed with everything 80's after rich, white guy James Halliday dies and offers his fortune to anyone who can crack the clues in his contest.    It became very popular among Generation X and we were all excited when it was announced that it was going to be adapted into a movie, and directed by Steven Spielberg even! But how could they get the juicy reference bits from the book into a film? The result was the 2018 movie of the same name.    First we break down some of the major changes from the book to the film and why we think they made those changes. Then we talk about whether the movie was a successful adaptation from different points of view.    And then we create our very own Easter egg hunt. What pop-culture references would we use for the world to solve? We'll lay it all out for you so you can try to solve the riddles of the egg.     Did you enjoy the Ready Player One Movie? What pop-culture references would be in your contest? First person that emails me with the subject line, “First to the key!” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. This week on the podcast, film critic and author Marya E. Gates (read her Substack!) joins us for another double-feature deep dive into Nicolas Cage's 2010s filmography, this time as two men failing to run from violent pasts! In the VOD thriller Rage, Cage plays a former criminal whose successful life on the straight and narrow is disrupted by the kidnapping and death of his daughter, which sends him spiraling back, as the Bugs Bunny meme would say, to "the old me." The prototypical Redbox-y action and creaky performances follows, even as there are some glimmers of something interesting with its fresh spin on the usual revenge narratives.  We follow that up with David Gordon Green's mournful Southern Gothic fable Joe, about an alcoholic tree-poisoner (Cage) who finds himself the erstwhile father figure to a kid (Tye Sheridan) trying to escape the thumb of his abusive father (Gary Poulter, one of moviedom's great one-and-done performances).  Together, the three of us talk about these two distinct takes on Cage's distinct style of middle-aged vengeance -- one highbrow, one lowbrow -- and you'll be shocked where our opinions actually differ! This week on the podcast, Nathan and Clint go it alone for the welcome return of Travolta to the cast! Unfortuantely, it's in the worse half of an otherwise-decent double feature about ex-thieves dragged back in for One Last Job to look after an estranged child in hyper-specific American cities! In Philip Martin's ponderous The Forger, Travolta tries his hand at a serious, downbeat character drama, as an expert art forger from Boston who works out a deal to get out of prison early to see his terminally ill son (Tye Sheridan). But of course, it's contingent on forging a priceless Monet and stealing the real one! Too bad any attempts at intergenerational male bonding (between Travolta, Sheridan, and a game Christopher Plummer as their irascible gramps) is bogged down by a top-tier bonkers Travolta wig/soul-patch combo. On the bright side, there's Stolen, which is the good kind of bonkers! Reuniting with Con Air director Simon West, Cage hams it up as an expert bank thief blackmailed into giving his ex-partner (Josh Lucas, truly Doing the Most) who has his daughter trapped in his cab's trunk. It's a goofy, fun chase through N'awlins, complete with colorful characters, campy twists, and some genuinely great side characters. W2M Network's Sean Garmer joins Mark Radulich and Robert Winfree to discuss and review the latest blockbuster hitting theaters, Ready Player One, on Damn You Hollywood.  Ready Player One is a 2018 American science fiction adventure film produced and directed by Steven Spielberg, and written by Zak Penn and Ernest Cline, based on Cline's 2011 novel of the same name. The film stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance. The film is set in the year 2045, when much of humanity, escaping the desolation of the real-world, uses the virtual reality software OASIS to engage in work and play. Wade Watts (Sheridan) discovers clues to a hidden game within the program that promises the winner full ownership of the OASIS, and joins several allies to try to complete the game before indentured players working for a large company, run by Nolan Sorrento (Mendelsohn), can do so.
