In the 60th and longest-ever episode of Allotment Diaries Podcast, hosts Laura and Chay are joined by special guest Anna for a delightfully off-topic conversation that starts with good intentions (allotments!) and ends up covering just about everything else. While allotments were meant to be the focus, the discussion veers off the composted path and into all sorts of unexpected territory — including family life, favourite Netflix shows, the joys and perils of 'adolencenses' with smartphones, natural remedies for stinging nettles (some more convincing than others!), and an essential debate about the best 90s boy band.Anna also shares the story of her own allotment journey. When she first took on her plot in May 2023, it was in rough shape — the kind of place where weeds go to thrive and tools go to disappear. But with a lot of hard work, patience, and the occasional snack break, she's turned it into a productive, peaceful space for her and her son, Noah. The allotment now offers home-grown food, a retreat from daily life, and a place to build lasting memories. It's a warm, funny, and thoroughly relatable episode that reminds listeners why they fell in love with gardening — and also why it's perfectly fine to go off on a few tangents along the way.Click HERE to follow Anna on Instagram. If you have any questions you would like to ask us or would like to collaborate with us, then please contact us on: allotmentdiariespodcast@gmail.com. For the first time ever, Chay and Laura take the podcast to the plot—literally! Armed with a microphone, a questionable sense of direction, and an eye on the looming rain clouds, they attempt a walking tour of their allotments. Expect thrilling updates on what's thriving, what's barely clinging to life, and what's been entirely claimed by weeds. It's short, it's chaotic, but it's packed with insight—and possibly some accidental slapstick moments. In this episode, Chay visits Fountain Community Garden in Hollywood during his trip to Los Angeles and sits down with Garden Manager David Benjamin. They discuss how community gardens (the US equivalent of allotments) operate in LA, the variety of plants grown, the challenges they face—including the impact of recent wildfires—and their future ambitions. While UK allotments and LA community gardens have distinct differences, Chay uncovers striking similarities, from the ongoing battle with pests such as Slugs to shared struggles and strengths. A key takeaway from the conversation is the strong engagement of local businesses and organisations with LA's community gardens, prompting reflections on whether UK allotments could foster deeper community involvement. Though this episode offers just a glimpse into the US gardening scene, it sparks an important discussion about the role of community in allotment culture. To find out more about Fountain Community Gardens, visit https://fountaincommunitygardens.org/ or follow then on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/fountain_community_gardens/?hl=enIf you have any questions you would like to ask us or would like to collaborate with us, then please contact us on: allotmentdiariespodcast@gmail.com. With winter on the horizon, it's time to say a fond farewell to the 2024 garden season. But that's not to say there is still a tremendous amount of gardening to be done. Lucy has been revelling in her Fruit and Veg with Autumn being the crescendo of harvest time, and Saul willed an Indian Summer so his last few exotics could flower before being tucked away for some well deserved winter rest. Otherwise there are still lawns to cut, leaves to be raked and a lot of planning for 2025!This week, the duo turn their heads towards garden clothing, by deliberating whether or not it's possible to turn off your professional gardening head when at home in your own garden (Lucy reveals that it is, but only Ursula Andress reveals herself in a bikini, on a beach, in Dr No - we promise, that WILL make sense). Lucy does sharpen up her look, temporarily, by donning her gladrags for the Garden Media Guild Awards, at the Savoy, no less. She sups sparkling wine, basks in the glory of her gardening friends, and generally has a jolly good time. Saul, in the meantime, is fending off vast Dutch flights of pigeons... In this episode, Laura and Chay chat about what they've been up to on their allotment plots lately (spoiler: not all of it involves growing vegetables). They dig into the hot topic of Polytunnels, Plastic Pots, Carpets, Tarps, and Tyres – the "go-to" materials for many allotment holders... or is it just lazy gardening? Laura and Chay debate the environmental impact of these materials while trying not to lose their minds over the sheer number of “weird things” people put in their plots. Plus, they remind you that not all allotment rules are the same, so don't be the person that gets kicked off the plot for using a roll top bath as a planter! So MetaInspiring stories of resilience: overcoming struggles, finding purpose, transforming livesListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifyIf you have any questions you would like to ask us or would like to collaborate with us, then please contact us on: allotmentdiariespodcast@gmail.com. With Autumn on the horizon, it's time to say a fond farewell to the 2024 garden season. Otherwise there are still lawns to cut, leaves to be raked and a lot of planning for 2025!BRRRRRR! This week saw a northerly, artic blast hit the UK, and for lots of people their gardens got covered in Snow. Lucy and Saul weren't the only ones donning their thermals, mittens and garden jumpers, as conditions outside turned decidedly wintery. But what do gardeners get up to when it's cold and many jobs are impractical? Well in fact there is quite a lot to be getting on with as we get ready for the warmer dreams of Spring. Pruning, greenhouse work, collecting seed and maybe an extra cup of tea or two, all feature as the Talking Heads pair thoroughly prepare themselves for a few months of less clement weather. No surprises for assuming that it's grow your own related - and in this episode she explains exactly what's in it. Entitled Grow Food Anywhere, Lucy aim's to allow everyone and anyone to experience the unadulterated joy of growing their own food, whether they live in arid Essex, soggy Devon, or, indeed, the windblown hilltops of bonny Scotland. In this episode, Laura and Chay have the pleasure of speaking with Paul Sutton, an experienced allotment holder from Ipswich. Paul explains how he got into allotmenting, gardening, and growing, and he takes us on a journey through the years, describing the changes he has seen and experienced. We also learn some fascinating stories based on his extensive experiences, as well as how he has overcome some of the challenges he has faced over the years. Paul is an excellent example of someone who is not afraid to evolve, adapt, and try new things, regardless of age. Paul also offers a very interesting and free method of slug management and leaves both Laura and Chay very impressed! If you have any questions you would like to ask us or would like to collaborate with us, then please contact us on: allotmentdiariespodcast@gmail.com. With Summer behind us and the touch of Autumn on the horizon, it's time to say a fond and lengthy farewell to the 2024 garden season. But that's not to say there is still a tremendous amount of gardening to be done. Lucy will be revelling in her Fruit and Veg as Autumn is the crescendo of harvest time, and Saul will be willing an Indian Summer so his last few exotics can flower before tucking them away for some well deserved winter rest. Otherwise there are still lawns to cut, leaves to be racked and a lot of planning for 2025!The final half term of the year is over, with weather that seems to have lost the fact that it's meant to be 'changeable' - a grey, murky sheet of cloud seems to have descended on the UK and it's not budging. But at least it's been dry and that means the Talking Heads pair can get out and start the Autumn clear-up, mow those ever-growing lawns, plant garlic, sow seeds and take cuttings - it's that time of year where one garden season collides with another. Also Lucy takes us back to her trip north of the border and a visit to Benmore Gardens, whereas the least said about Saul's half-term experience the better!Instagram Links:Lucy lucychamberlaingardensTwitter links:Saul @GardeningSaulIntro and Outro music from https://filmmusic.io"Fireflies and Stardust" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)Support the show

Christian Douglas is redefining vegetable gardening with a focus on style and functionality. Drawing on examples from urban and rural gardens, including his own garden in Marin County, he offers practical advice on growing a variety of vegetables, fruits, and herbs. Christian talks about how to assess lighting and soil, pick plants suited to the climate, and discover creative edible alternatives to traditional landscape plants. Looking at spaces from small city gardens to large rural plots, and even a rooftop space, his new book 'Food Forward Garden Design' offers guidance on how to create a purposely designed and beautiful kitchen garden. Alex is the gardening columnist for the Evening Standard and author of five books on gardening, including her latest ‘Crops in Tight Spots'. I speak to Alex about growing edibles when space in tight and she has some brilliant tips and tricks about how to grow, what to grow and what not to bother with. Alex's book is based on years of experience and I respect her approach of trialling, experimenting (including catching pupae in jars and observing them as they hatch!) and just giving things a go. As a result of this hands-on experimentation, she's developed some nifty time, money and space-saving methods and she shares some of those with us in the episode. The rain is continuous in the west, so Lucy tries to tempt him into a move East where the sun is always shining. That doesn't mean the gardening is put on hold as the Talking Heads Pair continue with the tasks of winterising the garden, clean those corners of the greenhouse (a good umbrella on rainy days!) and slowly getting on top of all the yearly growth that now needs removing. Also some sad news about the death of Jim Mcoll - a titan of Scottish horticulture - and Saul gets chased by Wasps. We're back for week 5 of our Second Helpings series, and it's chef week! We were only going to do meals on wheels and travel to someone else's place if they were someone we had been angling for since series 1. And of course they were most certainly going to get THE chicken soup (I had a massive cold so it was selfishly suggested by moi). We went to meet the one and only Jamie Oliver! The Naked Chef, the people's champ, the person who taught most of us millennials how to cook. We grabbed Jamie at Jamie Oliver HQ after we watch him high five all his staff, kiss babies and see a team pickling sesh going on. He proclaims mum's balls are the best he's ever had, we talk a lot about family, the nostalgic smell of hibiscus, dyslexia, his wife eating gravy with a fork and holding back his cookbook Veg for years. We're back next week for our final Second Helpings of this series, but boy are we going out with a bang, our favourite music legend and icon, we can't wait! Hosted on Acast.
