One is a beloved bandleader and soon-to-be Grammy nominee; the other, a “New York Times” bestselling author. But, as Matthew Heineman's (“Retrograde”, “The First Wave”, “Cartel Land”) intimate and heartfelt new documentary “American Symphony” makes clear, life is not always so glittering for high-profile couple Jon Batiste and Suleika Jaouad. Batiste must consider the possibility that his ambitious “American Symphony” may be beyond his creative capabilities just as Jaouad confronts a life-threatening health crisis. Joining Mike and Ken on the pod, Matthew returns to “Top Docs” to discuss the multitude of creative and logistical challenges that he faced during the making of the film. How did Matthew win Batiste's trust only to find that access was far from assured? In what way did silence become one of the most impactful moments in the entire film? And how did Batiste's climactic performance at Carnegie Hall almost not make it on camera? Clearly, in the life of this unscripted drama, improvisation was just as critical for the director as for his subjects. “American Symphony” is streaming on Netflix. Mexico has become the most dangerous country in the world to be a Catholic priest. In the past 15 years, 50 were killed in narco-related violence. And the young men who enter the priesthood in the region of western Mexico known as Tierra Caliente, meaning "hot land", are at particular risk. They will have to work in drug cartel-controlled communities, may have gang leaders or members in their congregations and will struggle with the ethical and theological dilemmas of publicly condemning these men's actions at the risk of being murdered for speaking out. Even baptisms or delivering communion or receiving donations can prove extremely threatening: to refuse them any of the most sacred rituals of the Church is to defy the cartels. And few live to tell the tale having refused to bend to the cartels' demands. The BBC's Mexico Correspondent, Will Grant travels to Tierra Caliente to meet a group of seminarians. In recent years, their director was attacked and almost killed. Members of a drug cartel entered their seminary, dragged off one of their colleagues and murdered him in the surrounding countryside. And the grave to one of their instructors is nestled by the chapel. All reminders, if any were needed, that these young men are about to join the world's most dangerous priesthood. How are they prepared? Do they appreciate just what they are letting themselves in for? And how will they tackle the thorny ethical and spiritual questions which lie ahead as priests? Come with us! “The pivot”. It is one of the most talked about topics among documentary filmmakers. And for good reason. An unpredictable and ever-changing world can render the best laid plans obsolete and wreak havoc for filmmakers. In the course of making his urgent new documentary “Retrograde”, Matthew Heineman (“City of Ghosts”, “Cartel Land”) found himself facing a doozy of a pivot. After years of persistence, he and his team had finally gotten permission to embed with a group of U.S. Army Green Berets stationed in Afghanistan, only to encounter, with the U.S. pullout of all of its troops, a story without any characters. But when the U.S. Special Forces left, Matthew pivoted to the even more dramatic story of an Afghan general trying desperately to lead his troops and defend his crumbling nation against the fast-encroaching Taliban. Joining Ken on “Top Docs”, Matthew discusses how he navigated this major shift and also sheds light on his distinctive approach to documentary storytelling. Why does Matthew intentionally exclude context from his films, believing that this creates a much more visceral and emotional impact? How did Matthew and the film's other cinematographers manage to capture moments of great intensity without, in certain situations, understanding what was being said? And, up against a stroke of extraordinary bad luck, how did Matthew reconceive the film's final scene in such a way to make the film's ending even more powerful than he could have imagined. Thank goodness for the pivot. “Retrograde”, released by National Geographic Documentary Films, is available now for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu. Matthew Heineman is an Oscar-nominated director whose films plunge viewers deep into some of the most tumultuous conflicts in the world. His new film, "Retrograde", tells the story of the last months of the 20-year war in Afghanistan through the intimate relationship between American Green Berets and the Afghan officers they trained, resulting in the heart-wrenching fall of Kabul. In this conversation with Tiller, Matthew reflects on his own fascination with military service (3:20), pivoting from filming the Green Berets to Afghan General Sami Sadat (6:56), how he achieved such incredible intimacy with his subjects (9:50), constructing the story in real time (16:02), the parallels between himself and his protagonist (22:20), sneaking back into Kabul during the fall (24:54), crying while filming (30:15), and how he plans to push himself further as a storyteller (32:50).
Season 2 - Episode 10 For this week's Team Deakins podcast, we sit down with filmmaker Matt Heineman (CARTEL LAND, THE FIRST WAVE, A PRIVATE WAR) for a fascinating and enthralling conversation. Matt tells us how he captured footage, and survived, in two situations where his life was literally on the line. First, among the drug cartel border skirmishes in Cartel Land, and then imbedded in a New York City emergency room for months during the outbreak and initial spread of COVID-19 for The First Wave. We also talk about one of the major aspects of making documentaries that most people never think about: casting. Matt also discusses everything involved in making the leap from directing documentaries over to directing narrative films. Don't miss it!
WTOP Entertainment Reporter Jason Fraley chats with Oscar-nominated filmmaker Matthew Heineman, who wrapped the Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival last night in Washington D.C. with his new documentary "Retrograde" about the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Pastor Cary Gordon is the voice of the new documentary Enemies Within the Church, also produced by Judd Saul and Trevor Loudon. This is one of the most important Christian documentaries to ever be released, as it not only points out the dangers of the Marxist infiltration into the church, but exposes the false gospel they preach and just how deeply entrenched they are within Evangelicalism.During this episode of Conversations with Jeff, I had the opportunity to have an hour-long conversation with Pastor Gordon, who I first met when I spoke at the Stand Against Marxism Conference in Des Moines, IA. What I appreciate about Pastor Gordon is his faithfulness to the Word and the Gospel. It's clear that he has a heart for the lost, which is why it's so important to stop these false teachers that have crept into the church. Our conversation discussed a wide variety of topics, including political involvement of Christians, the Democrat Party's platform, Donald Trump and Woke Christianity. The most important topic of conversation, however, got down to the heart of the Gospel by focusing on one of the primary topics of attack by the modern-day heretic: What is sin?You might hear so many woke posters who claim to preach the one true Gospel. And they do, in word only. The problem is that they redefine words… chiefly sin. By changing sin from it's biblical definition to a woke “oppression” outlook, you lose the heart of the Gospel, which turns into a false gospel. This means that anyone who believes in this “gospel” with the redefinition of sin is a false convert and going to hell. This is a theological battle that we must win if we want to save America. Our only chance is through the faithful preaching of the Gospel. If we want to see a true awakening, we must get the Gospel right.I highly encourage you to watch Pastor Cary Gordon's movie Enemies Within the Church, which features our very own Bobby Lopez of The Big Brown Gadfly. You can rent or purchase it at https://enemieswithinthechurch.com. Another documentary you should check out is the upcoming Freedom First TV production, Two Mules: Our Day on the Border with Tim Foley. Chad Caton took two congressional candidates, Josh Barnett and Garrett Barton, down to the border where they met up with Tim Foley of Cartel Land and saw the work of the cartels up close and personal. Academy Award-nominated director Matthew Heineman's (“Cartel Land”, “City of Ghosts”) harrowing new cinema verité documentary, THE FIRST WAVE, takes us into the eye of the storm, a New York City intensive care unit during the worst four months of the COVID-19 crisis. Trailing a relentlessly driven medical team led by the remarkable Dr. Nathalie Dougé and spending countless hours with desperately sick patients and their families, Heineman and his crew are there to document this unfathomable terror inside the hospital, but, also, stories of hope, too, and even moments of pure joy. What was it like to film during the early days of the pandemic when “safety protocols” were being created on the fly? How did the glint in the eye of an intubated patient provide a clue that an unforgettable relationship would develop between the patient and the medical staff? And in what ways did the events following George Floyd's murder make the connection between the worlds inside and outside the hospital? Ultimately, as Heineman says, THE FIRST WAVE is a testament to the power of the human spirit.” Prepare to cry. Matthew is the founder of the New York-based production company, Our Time Projects, but that's just a small fraction of his story. Sundance Film Festival has named him "one of the most talented and exciting documentary filmmakers working today," and for good reason. Matthew is the creator and filmmaker behind documentary films Cartel Land and City of Ghosts, both of which are centered in some incredibly dangerous and unruly areas of the world. Matthew Heineman's doco about the Mexican Drug War, was one of the finest of the whole decade and almost a companion piece to the movie Sicario. Incredible, almost unbelievable footage and stories but also cinematography you would sing about if it were in a normal film.

The ‘12 Years a Slave’ director and producer (the first black producer ever to win a best picture Oscar) opens up about how his work in art led to his career in film, his close collaborations with Michael Fassbender and why he followed his big Oscar night with an elevated heist flick he has been mulling for 35 years. But first: Matthew Heineman, a 35-year-old filmmaker best known for his Oscar-nominated doc ‘Cartel Land,’ explains how he came to make his narrative directing debut with ‘A Private War,’ a new film about war correspondent Marie Colvin. Credits: Hosted by Scott Feinberg, recorded and produced by Matthew Whitehurst.

And, when the balloon landed, something didn't add up. Ultimately in this episode, a professor predicts what won't happen in years to come, an Academy-Award nominated filmmaker unravels where he's going, and a storytelling guru helps make sense of "breaking news" as Jenks sorts out... what really happened? Guests: Matt Heineman (Academy Award nominated filmmaker: The Private War, Cartel Land, and City of Ghosts), Robert McKee (author, lecturer, story consultant), and Bob Thompson (Trustee Professor of Television, Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University)

For several years, Clint Bowie has served as the programming director for the New Orleans Film Festival. In 2017 he was promoted to the role of artistic director, giving him more influence on the indie films and studio submissions that screen at the festival. Selecting what will get screened is a process that takes months and a great deal of discussion amidst the programming team. After the New Orleans Film Festival became an Oscar-qualifying festival for short films, the task load increased exponentially. This year they had to sift through over 5000 submissions to figure out which films would get included in the festival. The selection process often seems opaque and mysterious, but it might seem a little less so after hearing Clint's interview. He does into some detail about how the selection process works and some processes that they have in place to ensure that every film gets a fair shot. Some of the things that we discuss include The guiding philosophy behind the festival's selection process When it pays to get out there and dance What filmmakers can do to improve their chances of getting their films selected What, if any, supplemental materials should filmmakers include in their festival submissions How films can impact society for good or for ill, and whether there is such a thing as films that go too far How filmmakers can take advantage of the opportunities that film festivals offer to develop their careers This year New Orleans Film Festival happens on Oct 11-19, and Clint also shares some recommendations about what to check out. After the interview concludes, I mention some festival screenings and events that caught my attention. I then elaborate on some things that came up in the discussion and share my thoughts on what makes a film worth celebrating and how the films we embrace can influence society at large. Richard Matson is the vice president of theatrical distribution at The Orchard, the distribution company behind the Oscar-nominated films Cartel Land and Life, Animated. The Orchard’s commitment to transparency stands in stark contrast to an industry-wide inclination to obscure distribution numbers, and they demonstrated that commitment by making the revenue streams for Cartel Land publicly available. Recently The Orchard made entertainment headlines again by spending $5 million to purchase Louis C.K.’s latest film, I Love You, Daddy, at the Toronto International Film Festival. Prior to his current role with The Orchard, Richard worked for Gathr, a theater on demand company, and his own distribution company, Matson Film where he worked with the likes of Participant Media, Kino Lorber, and The Orchard. Those experiences have shaped how he handles the distribution campaigns he currently oversees. I interviewed Richard a few weeks before TIFF, so I didn’t get to ask him about I Love You, Daddy, but since we initially met at South by Southwest, our discussion does include some festival strategies and a brief overview of The Work. That’s a documentary set in Folsom Prison which The Orchard acquired at SXSW. The film is scheduled to open in mid October. We also discuss the approach behind the releases of The Hero, the Sam Elliot picture they acquired at Sundance; The Music of Strangers, a documentary about Yo-Yo Ma’s efforts to bring together a global assembly of musicians, and Cartel Land. Other films distributed by The Orchard include Blue Jay and What We Do in the Shadows, and we briefly touch on the release of those films as well. Some of the other topics that we discuss include When it make sense to do a theater on demand screenings How The Orchard brings transparency into their collaborative partnerships What to think about when considering a film-festival strategy for a project How filmmakers can leverage The Orchard’s music library and expertise for their projects The key release windows for a film after it screens in theaters and how to manage them After the interview concludes, I share some of my takeaways from a few of The Orchard's films and how they influenced my thoughts on art and inspiration. Cartel Land, Midnight Special and National Lampoon: Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead are reviewed. With Cerise Howard, Thomas Caldwell and Josh Nelson.
This week, Danny and Sam eschew theatrical releases in favour of two harrowing explorations of systemic violence that are mainly available on demand - so viewers can despair at the pointless brutality of it all from the comfort of their own homes. Cartel Land is a documentary about two groups of vigilantes either side of the Mexico-US border, which features the most gut-wrenching narrative of power, corruption, and gang warfare this side of The Wire. Watch it on your streaming site of choice: http://www.cartellandmovie.co.uk/watch Beasts of No Nation is a similarly cheery, bubblegum affair about a child caught up ina a horrifying African civil war. Industry insider that he is, Danny read the script for this one back when it was in development. Did Cary Fukunaga and Idris Elba take his thoughtful script notes on board? Did they fuck. You can also watch Beast of No Nation on your streaming site of choice, as long as your choice is Netflix. When not grappling with international misery and chaos, Danny and Sam discuss more important topics such as whether Richard Curtis is a good choice to write The Little Mermaid; what a Face/Off-themed restaurant would be like; and why Hollywood has decided to follow up Exodus: Gods and Kinds with another blockbuster project set in ancient Egypt whose case is predominantly a very un-Egyptian shade of white. At the end, Idris Elba embarks on another ill-advised rapping project related to one of his movies. I'm not sure rapping is really for him. It just sounds wrong when he does it. Audio quality note: Katie's absence is still making itself felt, as the first 20 minutes or so of the podcast has a certain amount of background crackle that you'll probably notice if you're listening on good headphones. Power through as the crackle gremlins bugger off eventually. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Chris and Dylan venture into the post-apocalyptic wasteland of rural America in their review of Z for Zachariah, the new film from Craig Zobel starring Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Chris Pine. Then Chris guesses the plot of The Age of Adaline as they discuss new releases. Dylan saw Cartel Land, the new documentary produced by Kathryn Bigelow, and then gets sad when talking about the end of Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Meanwhile, Chris saw The End of the Tour, which is Jason Segel proving he's more than just a comedic actor. Finally, we cap the whole thing off with a long-winded discussion of the films we will be seeing at the Toronto International Film Festival (Chris) and Vancouver International Film Festival (Dylan). With unprecedented access, CARTEL LAND is a riveting, on-the-ground look at the journeys of two modern-day vigilante groups and their shared enemy the murderous Mexican drug cartels. In the Mexican state of Michoacn, Dr. Jose Mireles, a small-town physician known as "El Doctor," leads the Autodefensas, a citizen uprising against the violent Knights Templar drug cartel that has wreaked havoc on the region for years. Meanwhile, in Arizona's Altar Valley a narrow, 52-mile-long desert corridor known as Cocaine Alley Tim "Nailer" Foley, an American veteran, heads a small paramilitary group called Arizona Border Recon, whose goal is to stop Mexicos drug wars from seeping across our border. Filmmaker Matthew Heineman embeds himself in the heart of darkness as Nailer, El Doctor, and the cartel each vie to bring their own brand of justice to a society where institutions have failed. CARTEL LAND, winner of the Directing Award and the Special Jury Award for Cinematography at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, is a chilling, visceral meditation on the breakdown of order and the blurry line between good and evil. Heineman talks about the unprecedented access he was able to gain among all the divergent factions in this multi-dimensional tale.
