On September 13th John Horn talked to the Round TAlbe about "The Wilson-Kautz Raid, June-July 1864" For for Info: WWW.ChicagoCWRT.ORG Grant wasted no time after his Petersburg assaults of June 15-18, 1864, failed to capture the city. He launched his second offensive against Petersburg hours later. Among other things, he sent his cavalry on a raid to cut the Confederate railroads south of Petersburg. This would slow any reinforcements sent from the south and west to the enemy at Petersburg and Richmond. Grant also hoped that in case his infantry failed in its mission a lack of provisions would force the foe to abandon those cities. But at Petersburg Grant faced Lee and not Floyd as at Fort Donelson in 1862 or Pemberton as at Vicksburg in 1863. Lee, his cavalry commander Hampton, and Mahone smashed Grant's cavalry raiders at the battles of Sappony Church and First Reams Station. Born and reared in Chicago, John Horn has practiced law there since 1976. He has written three books and co-edited another about Petersburg, Virginia's soldiers, and the siege of that city. His most recent book, The Petersburg Regiment in the Civil War: A History of the 12th Virginia Infantry from John Brown's Hanging to Appomattox, 1859- 2 1861 (Savas Beatie), won the 2019 Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Award for Unit History. He has published articles in Civil War Times Illustrated, America's Civil War, Gettysburg Magazine, and North and South Magazine. He blogs at johnhorncivilwarauthor.blogspot.com.

Reproductive health access has become a major issue in U.S. elections in the nearly two years since Roe v. Wade was overturned. A series of elections and ballot initiatives in which reproductive rights have been at stake have driven high turnout, and more critical decisions for voters are on the horizon. In our latest IJNotes episode on reporting on reproductive health, we spoke with Regina Mahone, a senior editor at The Nation magazine and co-host of The A Files: A Secret History of Abortion podcast alongside Renee Bracey Sherman. Mahone and Sherman are also co-authors of the forthcoming book, “Liberating Abortion.”Mahone discussed how reproductive rights are linked to the health of democracy in the U.S., and detailed how reporters can cover the wide-ranging issue in the context of the country's upcoming presidential election. Real Estate Mogul Podcast - Learn How To Leverage Investing Strategies in Your Real Estate Business
In real estate investing, the first few deals are the scariest. Instead of seeing the mistakes we could make as failures, what if we treat them like necessary lessons? To be successful, we need to take advantage of both the wins and pitfalls. How do we situate ourselves to start learning and taking advantage of opportunities? In this episode, New Jersey agent and investor, Rob Mahone walks us through spotting his initial opportunities, getting through the fear of doing those first deals, and how he is using the lessons he learned today. As agents, we take people through the process, so the process isn't unfamiliar to us, it's the action of doing it ourselves that's unfamiliar and that's what you have to overcome. -Robert Mahone Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode How to win in investing We often spread ourselves thin thinking we can tackle and succeed at multiple things. Can we achieve more by doing less? Why our mistakes are so powerful How do we extract lessons from the missteps and hurdles we face along the way? The best way to start a deal Why is evaluating properties first such an important step? Guest Bio Robert began his real-estate journey nearly 20 years ago. It started with researching the industry, attending seminars, and working with mentors who took him under their wing. He bought his first rental property in 2015, and a second 6 months later. A rough patch as a new investor propelled him into a dual-career, supplementing his IT contractor salary with income as a real estate salesperson. He initially thought he'd use the real estate sales position to meet other investors and expand his network, but he fell in love with the joy that arrives on closing day for first-time buyers who are finally achieving their goal of homeownership. People want someone they can trust to get them through the stressful home-buying process, and Robert takes his work seriously in educating his clients and the agents he mentors on the benefits of homeownership. Real estate and homeownership are tools to generate equity, but they can also create long-term revenue streams and provide huge tax benefits. Approaching his third year in real estate sales, Robert has replaced his position as an IT contractor with being a full-time agent. He now supplements his income with his investments and a General Contracting business. It's really important to Robert that his three sons grow up playing monopoly with real property and not just the board game. SummaryFeedback is a gift. It can be scary, it can be hard, but when given in good faith it helps us learn, grow, and can make us feel good about the work that we've done. For this Christmas week episode of the e-commerce content creation podcast, Daniel is joined by Terence Mahone of Farfetch to discuss the gift of feedback. Even though it can be hard, if the goal of the team is growth, it is absolutely possible to have a culture where feedback is welcome and appreciated. Key TakeawaysFeedback is often thought to be exclusively negative, when in reality feedback can be a gift.Feedback at its core is information, and asking for more information to better form your opinion is valuable when giving and/or receiving feedback.Feedback should always be specific. Generic feedback amounts to a personal opinion and isn't always the best tool for growth.SBI - Situation Behavior Impact - A feedback format that encourages more meaningful information to help with giving GOOD feedback.Creating a culture that thrives on feedback changes how people approach cross functional projects or relationshipsTimeliness of feedback is crucial, if only because the more time passes, the harder it is to remember.Feedback can become a barometer for culture and communication in a team or org. If feedback is difficult, maybe there are some communication gaps that need to be filled.Like all things, we get better at feedback if we practice it. If you only give feedback a little bit once a year, you can't really expect to be good at it.we LIKE to hear things that tell us our colleagues believe in us, and want to see us grow.Difficult feedback needs to go through a manager, but peer to peer feedback can be really valuable provided the studio culture allows for it.Keeping a record of feedback can be important for a manager, to help facilitate growth, but also to give their next manager an idea of the accomplishments and areas of an improvement for a direct report.Keeping good records and meeting notes with your employees also eases the performance review process each year.ResourcesSBI FeedbackSTAR Feedback ModelTerence Mahone on LinkedInCreditsProduced by: Creative Force - creativeforce.ioEdited by: Calvin Lanz Sound - clsound.netHosted by: Daniel Jester - danieltjester.com
