Late night gigs. Recording Sessions. Touring. The erratic schedules of working musicians make work-life balance a tough thing to achieve. Add a partner and a growing child to the mix, and finding that balance gets even tougher! In this episode, Rosalyn sits down with Moonfruits Alex Millaire and Kaitlin Milroy, as they share their experiences, insights, and lessons learned while balancing the demands of a music career with the responsibilities of raising a family. From the challenges of finding childcare to the importance of fostering a supportive community, Moonfruits candidly share their strategies for maintaining a harmonious balance between their roles as artists and parents. This episode also delves into the broader landscape of parenting in the music industry, touching on topics such as work-life integration, self-care, and the need for flexibility and adaptability. Whether you're a musician, a parent, or simply interested in the intersection of art and family life, this conversation is sure to resonate deeply and provide valuable insights for listeners of all backgrounds.About MoonfruitsMoonfruits craft contemporary folk that addresses our collective humanity with heart, wit, and wonder. Led by partners Alex Millaire and Kaitlin Milroy, Moonfruits pen songs in both French and English, reflecting their bilingual lived experience in their hometown of Ottawa. The band harmonizes over assiduous arrangements of guitar, banjo, chord organ, and glockenspiel, weaving song-worlds that rouse and serenade in equal measure. Theirs is the music of open-minded dreamers and diligent doers, music that confronts dehumanizing capitalism and environmental catastrophe with a rousing message of solidarity.Moonfruits have gone from serenading market-goers as buskers in Ontario and Europe to connecting with audiences in prestigious listening rooms (National Arts Centre, Place des Arts) and festivals (Philadelphia Folk Festival, Ottawa Bluesfest, Festival of Small Halls Ontario). Since the release of their début full-length concept album Ste-Quequepart (2017), they have garnered Stingray Rising Star, SOCAN, and Trille Or awards and toured their transportive live show across Canada, the US, France, Belgium, and Germany.Moonfruits' anticipated sophomore album, Salt (Oct 2022), is a lushly orchestrated 12-song suite that explores what it means to the band to live, dream, and raise a child in an era of climate change and deepening socio-economic inequality.Watch 'Salt" Recorded live at the Folk Music Ontario Conference 2022Follow Moonfruits on Social Media: WebsiteInstagramYouTubeFacebookBandcampSpotify______________Presented by Folk Music OntarioHosted by Rosalyn DennettProduced by Kayla Nezon (Folk Music Ontario), Rosalyn Dennett (Folk Music Ontario), Tim Fraser + Tanya Fraser (Murdoch Entertainment)Recorded by Kayla Nezon, and Jordan Moore of The Pod CabinEdited by Jordan Moore of The Pod CabinTheme music “Amsterdam” by King CardiacArtwork by Jaymie KarnThe ReFolkUs Project is made possible through the generous support of the Department of Canadian Heritage

This week, Ottawa-based art-folk bilangue superforce Moonfruits! These must-see performers chat about high school peer Leif Vollebekk encouraging their early songwriting, fostering empathy through characters, and what it means to let an imaginary town speak for itself. We listen to a song from that town (Ste. Quequepart, translated as “Saint Somewhere”), and delve into how this town can help facilitate kitchen table conversations around income inequality and other vital social issues. Alex also gets heated on what could become new podcast, “classically speaking.” Check out Moonfruits’ latest work & upcoming tour dates in Ontario at moonfruits.ca and remember: “there are no wrong notes – it just matters what comes after them.”
Brenley MacEachern from Madison Violet talks about 20 years in the music industry and filming a new music video about the groups origins. Then Moonfruits the art-folk group from Ottawa talk about why their first visit to the Okanagan is going to be especially meaningful.
Moonfruits are a bilingual folk duo featuring the beautiful harmonies Kaitlin Milroy and Alex Millaire, who captivate audiences with their songs and stories, often accompanied by just a banjo or parlour guitar. Moonfruits released their sophomore recording “Ste-Quequepart” in 2016, a French language folk concept album about a magical little town – that celebrates the lives of its inhabitants in song, and through those souls, the lives of everyday people living in small towns or communities the world over. Moonfruits bring an emotional passion and authenticity to their music that truly makes their music come alive, especially when they are telling stories about Ste-Quequepart. Kaitlin Milroy and Alex Millaire sat down with Jan Hall from Folk Roots Radio for an in depth interview at the 2018 Folk Music Ontario conference. For more information about Moonfruits and their upcoming tour dates, visit http://moonfruits.ca. Music: Moonfruits “Les Marins”, “Ste-Quequepart”, “La Légende De Roustabout” and “Roustabout” from “Ste-Quequepart” (2017, Self) CDN

Cheshire Carr are a six piece Montreal-based folk-rock collective who weave together their diverse influences to produce a sound that is warm and inviting, yet also very intriguing. With songs and vocals that bring to mind a mash up of Paul Simon, Crosby Stills & Nash, Jefferson Airplane and Pink Floyd, their first album “Odds & Ends” is very engaging, and definitely worth exploring. Cheshire Carr feature Geneviève Cooke (vocals, percussion), Elie Flynn (guitars), Pierre Lavoie (vocals, drums, banjo), Mathilde Pigeon (accordion), Hugo Chaput (bass) and Ariel Harrod (vocals, guitar). Odds & Ends was mixed by Plants & Animals Warren C Spicer, who also helped shape the final sonic direction of the project. Cheshire Carr have a fabulous live show that comes across like a fun summer festival workshop featuring a coffee house folk act rocking out with a jam band. We caught up with Cheshire Carr’s Ariel Harrod at home in Montreal to chat about the band and their music. Visit Cheshire Carr online at http://cheshirecarr.com. Cheshire Carr play the Blacksheep Inn in Wakefield QC with Moonfruits on Friday May 18th at 8:30 p.m. Music: Cheshire Carr "This Song", "Devil in a Porcelain Dress", "Water Rising", "Remember When" from "Odds and Ends" (2016, Self).
