On this week's episode, I describe the uplifting event I attended in my community to honor and celebrate Tom Chapin's 80th Birthday. Tom, his family, his music, the special guests, the stories and the social justice woven throughout the evening, were magnificent. I didn't realize how much I needed to experience something so joyful and inspiring. As Tom's step-daughter, Jessica Craven so beautifully articulated: “I was reminded once again…of the profound power of the arts, community and family to heal and uplift. It's never been more important to make sure we're immersing ourselves in one or all of them, and often!” May you surround yourself with people who share your values, so we can hold our ground together. Check out the show notes for links to Arts Rock, Tom Chapin, The Chapin Sisters, “Abigail Rose and Lily Too”, Jessica Craven's newsletter “Chop Wood, Carry Water” and a video of Tom, with two of his daughters, Abigail and Lily singing a powerful song that is carrying me through the days. Charlotte Morris discovered her passion for this work at a young age because the fabric of her home and family life was music. Classical music, Broadway tunes, and especially folk music. “Every family car ride" says Charlotte "was filled with folk clas-sics, – Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Simon & Garfunkel, and Peter, Paul & Mary.” Charlotte learned a number of instruments on her own, and be-fore she knew it, Charlotte said, “Music grew from something I loved to something I needed." In January of 2018, Charlotte joined Lonesome Traveler – a na-tional concert tour where the cast performed the history of folk music, starting with Woody Guthrie and ending with songs from Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez. While on the road, folk legends including Tom Chapin, George Grove (Kingston Trio), Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey (both of Peter, Paul and Mary) performed with the cast at various venues. Next week, Charlotte's got her own band coming with her from Nashville to play on Red Barn Radio. Put this broadcast on your calendar and plan to be with us for an evening of great music and fun conversation with Charlotte Morris

“Bergen Street” The Brooklyn-born Chapin Sisters's new single—which is their first new material since 2017's Ferry Boat—is called "Bergen Street" and it's about moving. And because it's about moving from Brooklyn to the Hudson Valley, The Chapin sisters have had to have a lot of conversations about that move and what it means. Leaving Brooklyn really is kind of a big deal for sisters Abigail and Lily because they have pretty deep familial roots there. The Chapins are a Brooklyn family and their father Tom and his five brothers put their stamp on the city with their sixties folk band The Chapin Brothers. Two of those brothers you might recognize immediately--Tom Chapin is a well-known folk legend, whose albums for kids are absolute staples and their late uncle Harry, whose "Cats In The Cradle" is a staple on AM radio, was a beloved singer/songwriter as well. Reaching back further, their grandfather Jim Chapin was a well-known and respected jazz drummer. So music and Brooklyn run deep and moving away was a big deal and "Bergen Street" effortlessly chronicles what it feels like to have familiar geography in your rear view mirror. It's a wrenching, aching and utterly gorgeous song that's filled with poetic precision, melodic finesse and otherworldly harmonic bliss. In other words, the Chapin Sisters have stayed right on brand. Since 2004 they've put out a handful of marvelous albums, including The Chapin Sisters Sing The Chapin Brothers, A Date With The Everly Brothers and Lake Bottom. They've also recorded with Cass McCombs and She and Him, and collaborated with Michael Fitzpatrick of Fitz and the Tantrums as well as Louie Stephens of Rooney. Pick any of their albums or EPs and prepare to swoon. Their voices braid effortlessly together and rise and fall with heartbreaking immediacy. Their phrasing is precise, their delivery is heavenly and the way every syllable soars is nothing short of spellbinding. www.thechapinsisters.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com www.alexgreenonline.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Paul: I thought a little bit about this because I've obviously heard the podcast before. I'm going to go with the analogy, and I'm going to say x-ray vision. By that, I mean that I can see patterns and networks of people and organizations and see how you can connect them. Out of that connection will come something that's good for them, the people they serve, and society.Paul Katz, CEO and founder of Entertain Impact, describes his business as a “social impact agency, and we use popular culture for social change.”Polio EradicationSome of Paul's big wins have been working with Rotary International and the Gates Foundation on polio eradication. Impact Entertainment developed the “We're this close” campaign that engaged public figures around the world, signaling just how close we are to eradicating polio. This global campaign featured South Korea's Psy, who gained fame for his worldwide hit Gangnam style.Bill Gates also participated. (Bill was a guest on this show to discuss polio eradication.)Archie Panjabi, who starred in The Good Wife, also participated. (She was a guest on this show as a formal part of her work on this effort.)“If we can eradicate polio, it will be the only second human disease we've ever done after—I think smallpox was the first,” Paul notes. The work wasn't strictly limited to influencers. “We did some cool activities, activations, including what became a Guinness Book of World Records [record], where we had a certain number of influencers, whether it was Jane Goodall or it was a soccer player or an actor or whomever, just say ‘We're this close.' We eventually had, I think, over 130,000 people upload.”Paul says the goal isn't really in the activity. “What you're looking for is down the line is the impact.”Still thinking of polio, he lists the sort of questions he asks to determine whether the outreach has had an impact:* Does that have a bearing on persuading governments to continue the programs?* Does it give people in the field, the field workers, the very brave ones, especially in that corner where they're under threat—does it give them more motivation? * Do they get pride from seeing this, that they're acknowledged?Measurement“There are two different types of measurement,” Paul says. “There's the financial. Did you get a good return on investment? That's fairly easy to do.”“The social return on investment, which is what I'm very interested in—it's very difficult to measure that, but it's much, much better than it was ten years ago,” he says. “You can measure it in different ways.”By way of example, he offers, “We were doing a campaign for Europe where which gets people who have kind of graduated high school but haven't launched yet. It gets them internships and trains them. About 80% of them get jobs.”Of his firm's work, he says, “We have to be very careful to be accurate and credible in what we measure.” The thought applies almost universally to those working on and measuring impact.“If you take the Rotary campaign and the partners, you can say we were just the grain of sand on the beach of this,” Paul says. “I don't want to overstate it, but you can say they and polio are gone from Africa, and they're gone from India. So that's the big, big impacts that we're a very small part of.”Paul has strategically used his superpower for big impact over his career. He metaphorically calls it x-ray vision. He's talking about his ability to see strategic connections among people and situations—and then act on the vision. How to Develop X-Ray Vision As a SuperpowerPaul shared two specific examples of using his x-ray vision for significant impact. His first example:Very recently, I was chatting to these two organizations. I was involved through a friend of mine, Tom Chapin, with an organization called Whyhunger, which is founded by his brother Harry Chapin, who was a singer who died way, way too young. This wonderful organization deals with food insecurity. Under its new leadership, it has become much more of a social justice organization. So, I've been involved with them over the years. At the same time, we work very closely with SixDegrees.org, which is an organization that Kevin Bacon founded, based upon the game, and has done wonderful things under the leadership of Stacy Houston.Kevin was hosting a TV show that came out actually co-hosting with the precise TV show that came out in 2021. They were looking for a philanthropic partner. And because I knew both of them, I introduced them. So Six Degrees was kind of the executive producer of the show on CBS. Kevin and I were the hosts, and Whyhunger was one of the two partners. The other one is also an amazing organization called the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. They both were the partners. That raised about $7 million for the organization, which, you know, has a big impact on what the work that they can do. The reason it's so top of mind was I presented an award to Six Degrees on behalf of Whyhunger on Tuesday of this week. And that was very nice to see them acknowledged by their peers. So I think that's maybe one example of the connectedness. His second example:I come out of music, and I'm still involved in music. Some of that goes into the film business, especially with Participant Media, which is the company founded by Jeff Skoll that does documentaries like the Obama one or Malala or RBG and also Green Book and Spotlight—movies that are entertaining but have substance, which is what we do. We always try and wrap our stuff up in entertaining packages, so it gets on people's radar, but it has some seriousness in that. So because of my film music work, I know the guys at Pixar, so some of the guys, the marketing guy, and we put together a thing for the Grammys called the Grammy Music Education Coalition, which was basically a coalition of different organizations in the teaching music world. About 70 people, 70 organizations, I should say. We were all concerned with the lack of music in public schools, especially for what we now call BIPOC folk. I could go on a lot, but I know we have a short podcast, but suffice to say, music has social emotional benefits and intellectual benefits that we all know about in addition to academic ones. So, I reached out to Pixar. They were doing a movie—I don't know if you remember this movie called Coco. It was an animated movie about a kid whose grandfather was like the Elvis Presley of Mexico, but he wasn't allowed music. So that connection with the Grammys and the lack of music in the schools proved to be very powerful. Pixar was fantastic, and the Grammys were fantastic. We had 200,000 or 300,000 kids involved in the program, and donations and music platforms that were were utilized and broadened. I think it made some impact, especially in, I know, Nashville, for example, Chicago, Philadelphia and parts of California. So, this connecting people who've got amazing talent. In a way, it's in music. You do talent spotting, you know, you look for the next artist that's going to express themselves musically in a wonderful way. In a way, that's what I'm kind of doing in my philanthropic and social justice work. After hearing these illuminating examples of how he uses his x-ray vision to make strategic connections, I asked him for advice for developing this ability.Paul recently finished writing a book, Good Influence, How to Engage Influencers for Purpose and Profit, that will be published in February. He offered three tips for developing or strengthening x-ray vision:* Have empathy. “First of all, on a personal level, I need to learn to listen and make sure that I'm empathetic and other people's experiences I take into account.”* Be systematic. “Secondly, I'm involved with Made in Memphis Entertainment, a Black-owned, Black-run music business. Its social mission is to engage people who have got super talent, super character, just not the networks. Mentorship is a big part of what we do. So, I think that that's important that you're systemized about it—you think about it, and you implement some proper structures around it.”* Scale up. “What I'm trying to do [in the book] is inform people and give them confidence. Organizations of whatever size, anywhere in the world, can do this. So, that's trying to do it on a larger scale than just a one-on-one or within one organization. You've got individual, organizational and then hopefully a much broader perspective.”By following Paul's advice and his example, you can develop your x-ray vision into a superpower that will help you do more good in the world. Together with American Songwriter we had the pleasure of interviewing Jason Chapin over Zoom video!“Harry Chapin was one of the greatest storytellers of all time. He wanted to change the world. And he did.” — Ken Kragen, Harry Chapin’s manager and co-creator of USA for Africa and Hands Across AmericaThe incredible life of Harry Chapin can be seen like never before in, Harry Chapin: When In Doubt, Do Something. This documentary, directed by Rick Korn and released by Greenwich Entertainment (Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President, Creem: America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine, Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind), follows the renowned GRAMMY-nominated folk singer from childhood - spent under the shadow of his jazz drummer father - throughout his tragically short life and captures the up-and-down spirit of one of folk’s great humanitarians. The film’s theatrical release is set for October 16 on World Food Day — a fitting coincidence for a man who co-founded the influential hunger non-profit WhyHunger.Told through archival footages and new interviews, When In Doubt, Do Somethingexplores like never before the key moments in Chapin’s life, including performing with his brothers and working on the Academy Award-nominated documentary Legendary Champions, to his solo success with hits like “Taxi,” “W.O.L.D.” and “Cat’s In The Cradle” and his tireless philanthropic work, which included his efforts with WhyHunger and a seemingly endless run of benefit performances, all of which led to him being posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. This documentary paints a new picture of the singer-songwriter who used his fame as a launching point to help others and influence politics. It features testimonials from Chapin's family (including Tom Chapin and Steve Chapin), as well as peers including Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Seeger, Kenny Rogers, Robert Lamm (Chicago), Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Pat Benatar, Bob Geldof, Ken Kragen, longtime bassist John Wallace, and WhyHunger co-founder Bill Ayres. “Harry Chapin was one of the greatest storytellers of all time. He wanted to change the world. And he did.” These words kick off the debut trailer of When In Doubt, Do Something: The Harry Chapin Story. Watch the trailer, which premiered this morning on Rolling Stone: https://bit.ly/32y9dHsA portion of proceeds from the film will go to both WhyHunger and The Harry Chapin Foundation. '“Over the years, we've taken artists who may know each other, may have played with each other 20-30 years ago, and it's sort of a reunion. I remember being backstage last year when Dave Bromberg and Tom Chapin – at one point they were both in the New York music scene – and they were saying ‘ya remember when we played the Village Gate?' Or to see Richie Havens hugging Odetta … just so many stories. We try to do it in the form of a song-swap; put them all up on stage together and they go round robin and do two songs each, and at the end of the show they usually do one big ‘Goodnight Irene' thing or ‘This Land Is Your Land.' It's just great.” That's Bruce Newman, Memphis tax and entertainment lawyer extraordinaire, talking about 25 years of the annual benefit concerts known as Acoustic Sunday Live. For the second year in a row, 2019's concert will benefit Protect Our Aquifer, the nonprofit group started by Ward Archer dedicated to public oversight of our precious Memphis water.

And now, a little music from a former Balti-moron who enjoys both a national and international career. Victoria Vox is an award-winning singer/songwriter who is one of the leading artists on the ukulele scene. She’s also a fixture on the national folk music scene. She’s opened for Jackson Browne, Leo Kottke, Cheryl Wheeler and Tom Chapin, among others. She moved from Baltimore to Costa Mesa, California, a couple of years ago, and she’s back in the area doing some events this weekend. Victoria is giving a songwriting workshop at the Creative Alliance tomorrow afternoon. She’s playing in Columbia on Saturday, in Westminster on Sunday afternoon, and in Hagerstown Sunday night. Her new album is called Colorful Heart. She’s been kind enough to stop by, with her ukulele…and her inimitable mouth trumpet. Today's performance was live-streamed on WYPR's Facebook page, and you can find the video here.Victoria Vox performs these songs from her new CD, in this order: Only Time Will Tell; Daytime Moon; and Sounds of Summer...
Tom Chapin sings his most excellent song, "Uh Oh, Accident" about being a klutz. Harry also brings in his personal care products, like anti-gravity shampoo and slow motion lotion or faster than light aftershave, only he gets into trouble with the FDA. Hilarity ensues.
Today we have Tom Chapin on the podcast. Tom's been around forever, winning grammy awards and hosting his own TV show. He plays for kids and adults alike, a total class act. He's doing a song called "State Laughs." Also, Harry's sweater has shrunk which leads him to want to shrink other things, and he does. Oh yes, he does. Steve plays a song he wrote on the piano, "When I Play Piano I Give It A Fast Kick". It's a doozy, and did you ever hear the "Who's On First" routine with a knock knock joke? That's because it has never been done...until now.

In a career that spans five decades, 24 albums and three GRAMMY® awards, Hudson Valley Troubadour Tom Chapin has covered an incredible amount of creative ground. In addition to his work as a recording artist and concert performer, Chapin has acted on Broadway, as well as working extensively in films, television and radio. As a music-maker, the multi-talented singer/songwriter/guitarist has maintained two long and productive parallel careers, both as a highly respected contemporary folk artist and as a pioneer in the field of children’s music. In both roles, Chapin has established a reputation for insightful, heartfelt songcraft and effortlessly charismatic live performances. The New York Times called Chapin “one of the great personalities in contemporary folk music,” while Billboard called him “the best family artist around” and described him as “totally captivating.” His new adult CD, simply titled 70, finds the songwriter full of vitality and brimming with excitement. Songs of social activism address fracking, the importance of art classes in school and ecological issues, resting perfectly beside heartfelt appreciations for family and friends. The wonderful Tom Chapin is in the studio and with the help of Harry they sing Tom's "Whale Song." Harry has to use the bathroom. While he's gone, Steve imitates Harry's voice with such success that when Harry returns, Steve decides he doesn't need him anymore. Harry sues. Steve also sings his original tune "I Wanna Iguana".
Tom Chapin is a three-time Grammy-award winning artist who’s released 24 albums over his long career. He’s one of the few artists who’ve been able to lead a dual life as both a folk artist and popular childrens’ performer. His new album, 70, celebrates his milestone birthday with a diverse collection of acoustic-based tunes – socially-conscious tracks rub shoulders with heartfelt love songs. It’s a fitting summation of his 50 years as a performer. He tells us the story behind “Guitar Child,” a song that pays homage to some of his heroes. He also talks about the great songwriter Steve Goodman, and why he chose to cover his “City of New Orleans.” In addition, we discuss his late brother, Harry Chapin, and his lasting impact as a social activist.

Subject: Wisdom learned through laughter and song Speaker or Performer: Joe DeMasi Date of Delivery: February 2, 2014 Joseph DeMasi is an award-winning singer, songwriter, recording artist and entertainer who has been delighting audiences throughout the world with his music, humor and talent for over 25 years. He got his start in the folk clubs and coffeehouses of New York City, where he was born and raised. Attaining local success in that folk scene he worked and shared the stage with such folk music greats as Harry and Tom Chapin, Christine Lavin and Oscar Brand. The 80's found Joseph in one of New York's hottest party bands, however, his love for acoustic music took him frequently to Nashville where he wrote, recorded and produced with some of Nashville's top musicians. In 1992 he joined forces with twin brother and long time collaborator John, along with life long friend and actor Chris Burke, the star of ABC's hit TV show Life Goes On. The trio formed a children's music group and signed a record deal with BMG/Kidz. They have recorded 4 albums and have received many awards for their music, including a Parents Choice Gold Seal of Excellence. They currently tour extensively throughout the country and have appeared on many TV shows, including Good Morning America and Entertainment Tonight.Joseph continues his solo career as well with the release of his solo CD View From a Distant Past. This 10 song album of contemporary folk music is packed with Joseph's unique take on such topics as love, war, religion and even his pet grand-”dogs”! A native now of Valley City, North Dakota for over a decade, he is often asked what an Italian-American from New York is doing here in the great plains of the Dakotas. “I like to say it's because I'm in the witness protection program” he jokingly kids, “but really it's because I feel in love and married a great Dakota girl”!

PUNCH BROTHERS return the WoodSongs stage with a brand CD on Nonesuch Records called "Antifogmatic." Led by mandolinist Chris Thile (founding member of Nickel Creek), the band's second CD showcases the collaborative power of this virtuosic, genre-blurring combo. The Punch Brothers' line-up includes some of the most impressive and widely respected musicians performing today: Chris Eldridge (guitar), Paul Kowert (bass), Noam Pikelny (banjo), and Gabe Witcher (fiddle). In fact, Noam Pikelny just won the first annual Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass. THE CHAPIN SISTERS are singing and songwriting sisters who have been performing since 2004. Lily and Abigail (daughters of veteran singer/songwriter Tom Chapin and nieces of famed folk singer Harry Chapin) are known for pristine harmonies and haunting melodies that have gained comparisons to sister acts of old and Appalachian family groups, yet their songs and arrangements have a very contemporary feel, with elements of pop, blues and psychedelic rock.

Please email garyandruth@celticmythpodshow.com, or call us using Speakpipe News & Views We talk about the generous gift from Orient Xpress, their rocking song Ancient Hero and the demise of the superlative podcast, Deo's Shadow. Mr Monaghan's Magical Faery Dust by Faeries Wear Boots Born just weeks apart, with a mutual love of all things dark, gothic, shiny, folky, and fae, it was inevitable that Chrissie and Polly would eventually come together to form Faeries Wear Boots, a modern melting-pot of the darker elements of British and Irish folk music and lore with pretty tunes, driving beats, and of course, very big boots. Soon they were joined by Chrissie's father, Andrew, and (when he wasn't busy being a rock star) her brother Robby and the Faeries Wear Boots line up was complete... Described by one festival organizer as ‘faeries with attitude’, Faeries Wear Boots continue to go from strength to strength as they win over audiences with their captivating tunes and fantastical faerie attire. ... Already Faeries Wear Boots have been asked to support Scottish songstress Isla Sinclair, and have played alongside Pagan-Folk and Faery artists such as Omnia, Daughters of Gaia, The Dolmen, Wendy Rule and Elfin Spiral. You can find out more details about Faeries Wear Boots on their Website or on their Contributor Page on our website. Long Lankin by Tinkerscuss Tinkerscuss are sisters Erin and Bryony Holden who live in the north Gloucestershire village of Bourton-on-the-Water. They are renowned for songs that are dark and eerie along with the more traditional ‘Celtic’ pieces. The combination of Bryony's rich, resonant vocals and Erin's modal guitar style will enthral, bespell and wrap the listener in the mists of myth and legend. You can find out more details about Tinkerscuss on Myspace or on their Contributor Page on our website. Perfect by Triflemore Sometimes the impractical makes perfect sense… From the very first tune and lyric they combined, Triflemore knew they were on to something that fit. Though choosing to start a collaboration with an entire ocean in the way, meant even small tasks would require extra effort. It also meant having to challenge any existing theories that having to be in the same room is a pre-requisite to good songwriting. And well, many have been shocked to discover that their first album, Words from Notes, a haunting, well-intertwined voice and guitar duet, was written and recorded without ever having met in person. The impractical was achieved by using technology to deliver back and forth the ideas of two souls from two very different places. Susan Rhea, from small-town America, and Owen Goudie from the Shetland Islands, found their inherent differences irrelevant to the ability to seamlessly blend their musical thoughts. The result is a contemplation of emotions that create themes which are relevant to us all in our own way. By searching for tunes and lyrics to enlighten their own hearts, they’ve happened upon a way to make a difference by creating songs to briefly open windows that let us peer in behind the joys and often lingering sorrows of a life. In their song Goudfield, the question is asked “What would you say if words would last?” Triflemore will continue to answer this with each new song that finds it’s way into their hearts. This is their life’s journey. And, you could say, that as they continue to overcome the obstacles that the distance places before them, the impractical has become something they have learned to embrace because to them, nothing has ever made more sense….. You can find out more about Triflemore on their website or our Contributor page. King for a Thousand Years by Orient XPress Orient Xpress is a transCaucasian Indie Guitar band with Azeri passion, Irish soul, Essex Blag, Polish spirit, and a whole heap of loveliness. The sort of band that a 15yo crazy will love but his mum will too (from their Myspace page). You can find out more about Orient Xpress on their Contributor page. The Chair of Cerridwen Sacred Texts From The Book of Taliesin on Sacred Texts, taken from the Four Ancient Books of Wales by William F. Skene. The Balefire Song by Tinkerscuss Tinkerscuss are sisters Erin and Bryony Holden who live in the north Gloucestershire village of Bourton-on-the-Water. This Song by Thinker Thinker are a 3-piece folk-indie band from the South of the UK. They call themselves folk-indie, but only because they are acoustic led and have a fiddle; in reality it is difficult to categorise music which draws on Irish, English, Punk and Indie influences. Over the past year they have played across the South coast, from London to Cornwall, playing many festivals in the Summer, and with friends and acts like 3 Daft Monkeys. With a growing following and reputation for song writing, musicianship and performance, Thinker are keen to build on their achievements, and bring their music to audiences old and new in 2009. You can find out more details about Thinker on Myspace or on their Contributor Page on our website. The Faery Dance by Faeries Wear Boots Born just weeks apart, with a mutual love of all things dark, gothic, shiny, folky, and fae, it was inevitable that Chrissie and Polly would eventually come together to form Faeries Wear Boots, a modern melting-pot of the darker elements of British and Irish folk music and lore with pretty tunes, driving beats, and of course, very big boots. Poitin Valley by The Logues The Logues began some time at the start of 2006 when 'Bobby' (Banjo/Guitar) was pissed in one of Castlederg’s finest drinking establishments, the Town House, and for some reason thought it would be a good idea to book a non-existent, nameless band with no members for St. Paddy's day. The incident went forgotten in his mind until a couple of weeks before St. Paddy's day when it was too late to back out. He rounded the rest of us up without much fuss, having known each other from school, and we started practicing on the 16h of March. The next day went surprisingly well and we haven’t stopped since. We also needed a band name so we named ourselves after our bass/singer/tin whistler, Justin Logue, like a culchie Bon Jovi. I suppose you could call it Irish folk rock or as I prefer, drinking music, or music you could punch your mother to. Either way we hope you enjoy our stuff. We’re currently recording an album and will be hitting your local in the next year or two. You can find out more details about Faeries Wear Boots on their Myspace page or on their Contributor page on this website. Listener Feedback Caitlin We read an email from Caitlin from Indiana.
