Back in 2020, the Canadian singer-songwriter Leif Vollebekk found himself with a lot of extra time to think about the direction of his life and music. During that time, he allowed himself the space to dream — both literally and figuratively. Those dreams became the foundation of his new album, “Revelation,” which is now nominated for a Juno. Last fall, Leif joined Tom Power to talk about the record and what he learned from reading Carl Jung's book “Memories, Dreams, Reflections.”

One night, Canadian artist Leif Vollebekk dreamt that Jeff Buckley taught him a song in a Manhattan rehearsal space. Vollebekk watched Buckley’s hand on the fretboard of his guitar as he followed along. Vollebekk felt like he was in heaven, as their falsettos rang out. When he woke up, he wondered which Buckley song that might have been. He quickly realized that it was “Rock and Roll,” his own new song.
Today's Song of the Day is “Rock and Roll” from Leif Vollebekk's album Revelation, out now.

In this snap, bonus episode, show host Jef Szi riffs on what he is calling, 'Alpha Masculinity,' as it emerges alongside Donald Trump election to a second presidential term. In his eclectic style, Jef begins the show sharing his experience on a beautiful November night in San Francisco and going to see Leif Vollebekk in concert with his wife. Contrasting that with the pre-show UFC experience, Jef leans into evolution, mating strategies, and ironies that are unfolding as the majority of American Voters embrace the "big man" attitude and style of Donald Trump. With curiosity, critique, and invitation, Jef invites us to dive into the instinctual draw toward a renewed Alpha Masculinity with nuance.Calling on the stories from his late friend, Brent MacKinnon during the turmoil of the Vietnam War as well as the gift of artistry Leif demonstrated in his show, Jef calls us forward into this conversation using all the sensibilities to illuminate the deep need to reconcile ourselves with this force and to find our way with the complexities it presents.

We chat with both Canadian artist Leif Vollebekk, about his new album and coming to the UK for the first time since pre-pandemic.
Hailing from Sulphur Springs, Texas, Caleb J.E. Brown is a singer-songwriter known for his melancholic and crooning ballads, most of which revolve around somber themes like loss, abandonment, heartbreak, and yearning. In his formative years as a musician, he was influenced by artists ranging from early soul singers like Otis Redding and Al Green to more modern yet emotive acts like Jeff Buckley, Leif Vollebekk, and Sigur Rós. An out-of-tune and dusty Acrosonic piano in his family garage gave birth to a dream of becoming an artist in any avenue he could use. While those formative preteen years did not form much of value, he eventually found his footing in the thought-provoking and brooding music he created. After a rather tragic end to a chapter in his life, he set his sights on perfecting and releasing his art to a public audience in the hopes that someone listening could connect with his music. After the release of his debut album entitled "Pigeons to Doves", Caleb began to grow into his own and mold himself into the kind of artist he aspired to be. "Used" was released the following March which included more vocal runs and a modern approach to his style. With the introduction of his latest single, "I Want You", his roots as a blue-eyed soul singer are clearly etched into his ever-expanding repertoire as a musical artist.

We unpack the mythology and multivalent archetype associated with this frequently misunderstood and oversimplified planet. We speak about desire, longing, and how love is consistently more complex than we give it credit for. We touch on projection, fantasy, what constitutes core, human needs, and make a case to de-pathologize pleasure. We also discuss our own Venus placements and the journey that all three of us have been on to understand ourselves through the lens of love and loss. Hailing from Los Angeles by way of south Florida, Michael Kaiser is a singer-songwriter known for his somber and soulful musical delivery. Taking influence from artists old and new, Michael's melodies settle somewhere between Damien Rice and Leif Vollebekk often reading like poems. Settling in to Los Angeles just a short time ago, Michael has landed performances onto some of the city's most coveted stages including multiple stints at The Hotel Cafe, Desert Nights, Pappy and Harriets, The Satellite, and Highland Park Bowl to name a few. Michael's debut EP, Hello Coyote, is available now as of Jan 22, 2021 on all streaming platforms. “Hello Coyote brings together all of my muses: family, friendships, romance and the summer nights in any place on earth where it's warm enough to feel it in your bones. Over the last few years, writing and making music became my reasons for keeping on, and these songs are attempts to find the rhythm in life's changes and in life's heartache, and the coyotes, still running through the hills.” - Live at 5 is an Anchor Eighty Four Media original. Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Sam Lynch over Zoom video! Sam Lynch is a Vancouver based singer-songwriter and musician, who makes wallflower hush-rock songs that will stare you down and slow your breathing. Her debut album “Little Disappearance” is out now via Birthday Cake.Since the release of her 2017 single “Mess You Made” and 2018 EP “Light and Lines”, Lynch has been gathering a dedicated audience by way of her confessional songwriting and emotionally evocative live performances. After a busy couple years of domestic and international touring—opening for Andy Shauf, Noah Gunderson, Alice Phoebe-Lou, Mother Mother, and more—Lynch partnered with Montreal-based producer Samuel Woywitka to begin work on her first full-length studio record.Little Disappearance is Sam Lynch’s debut studio album, released October 2020 on Winnipeg label Birthday Cake. Featuring the work of some of North America’s most brilliant creatives—Dylan Phillips and Isaac Symonds (Half Moon Run), Leif Vollebekk, Robbie Lackritz (Feist, Bahamas), amongst many others—the collection of songs paints a lush sonic landscape where self-reflective lyrics and cathartic musical flourishes collide. The album was written and recorded over the period of a year and a half, from both Lynch’s basement home studio, and world-renowned studios in Montreal and Vancouver. The songs swell and recede, as percussive guitar, expansive strings, sparse piano, and whisper-close vocals invite listeners to observe Lynch’s most introspective moments, and inevitably turn the mirror on themselves. In the widest sense, Little Disappearance circles around various forms of loss—loss of self, loss of memory, loss of time and youth; the endless cycle of losing your footing, and searching for something steady to hold on to. Throughout the record, Lynch oscillates between universality and specificity, moments of questioning and glimmers of hope, all while making peace with the fleeting and impermanent nature of life—as she sings on “Keeping Time”: ”It’s true/I know the moon isn’t there for me to hold on to”.While the act of disappearing is often equated with vanishing or ceasing to exist, Lynch views it more as a process of making space, particularly regarding this record, which she says holds “a dissolving resentment, a release, a fading memory, a changing reflection; a little disappearance.”We want to hear from you! November sein neues Album "New Ways" herausgegeben.
Montreal's Leif Vollebekk emotional delivery creates a world of color in my mind. It's not surprising that he has Synesthesia, a perceptual condition in which the stimulation of one sense triggers an automatic, involuntary experience in another sense. Leif sees colors when he hears music, therefore, his music invokes colorful emotion. Raised in Ottawa, he inherited a few instruments from family members and started playing. After graduating from college, Leif spent time absorbing the landscape and culture of Iceland. Upon returning to Canada, he moved to Montreal, where he lives now. We touch on all sorts of topics in our conversation. He really opened up about his Synesthesia. It was interesting to hear about how he discovered he had it and how he relates to other musicians who have it. He said he can tell right away if another musician has the condition. I'll definitely be keeping an ear out myself now that he's clued us in on certain distinctions. Enjoy! Check out all the great music podcasts over on Pantheon.

Quequepart, translated as “Saint Somewhere”), and delve into how this town can help facilitate kitchen table conversations around income inequality and other vital social issues. Alex also gets heated on what could become new podcast, “classically speaking.” Check out Moonfruits’ latest work & upcoming tour dates in Ontario at moonfruits.ca and remember: “there are no wrong notes – it just matters what comes after them.”

When I reached the Biltmore to interview Leif Vollebekk, I thought I found him locking the van, so introduced myself. Turns out I was actually talking to Rolf from Acorn (the Ottawa band Leif was on tour with). Leif and Rolf look uncannily alike and could easily be confused for siblings. Leif later told me that when he was manning the merch table in Seattle last night, this drunk fan had made the same mistake. Still he sold her an Acorn CD, told her that “Acorn loved her” and did everything short of signing the CD. A lot of people think Leif sounds like Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley and it is easy to see why. I don't think he quite compares to those heavyweights yet, but he is starting in a great place. And he is a really sweet guy. Tracks played on the show... 1) Leif Vollebekk, Inland "Don't Leave For Klaksvik" 2) Leif Vollebekk, Inland "You Couldn't Lie To Me In Paris" 3) Leif Vollebekk, Inland "1921" 4) Leif Vollebekk, Inland "Northern Most Ava Maria" ALL songs CANCON
