Escuchar audio

I don't know about you, but the title, The Goodness of Unicorns, grabbed me. That cover? Also amazing! Listen in as Kayla M. Green chats about her writing and just what this goodness of unicorns is all about note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Eye color changing? Losing the ability to SEE color? That totally grabbed me. My copy is on my bookshelf waiting for a chance to read it. Yay! The Goodness of Unicorns by Kayla E. Green One girl determined to heal her sister and another looking for purpose in a nation on the brink of war. And unicorns—with a twist you've never seen before. It's Rowan Tritonia's sixteenth Naming Anniversary. Her plans for the day never included a headache that causes her to almost faint on a day meant for celebration. When the world comes back into focus, her brown eyes have changed to magenta. But what scares her more is that everything around her is now black and white coupled with a mysterious ability to see the light and shadows in a person's soul. Then a local cleric implies that Rowan could have the power of Sight, a gift which has only been seen in the stories of unicorns in the Book of Verimor, an ancient text. Rowan is perplexed. Why would Verimor give her something she never asked for instead of answering her greatest prayer to help her younger sister, Blythe? News of the girl with Sight quickly travels beyond Rowan's local village. When the King of Wisteria learns of her gift from a letter, he summons her to the castle. With growing political tensions from neighboring nations, Rowan may be able to provide the aid they desperately need. Linnea, the king's sister and his primary advisor, prays that Rowan has truly been blessed by a unicorn and can save the nation and its people from encroaching darkness. Meanwhile, back at home, Blythe, sets out on her own journey. She feels helpless, tied down by the pain that keeps her homebound most of the time. Although she wears a smile to comfort those around her—especially her family—Blythe wonders if her life will ever amount to anything more than fading into the background. Is she truly too broken for any greater purpose, or can Verimor still use her? Don't forget to check out Kayla's Metamorphosis blog tour HERE. Peter and Eden dive into the first four issues of Larry Hama's classic G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero comics — a Kickstarter Peter may have regretted until roughly issue three, when a self-reassembling mech changed his mind. Before getting to Cobra, they cover Eden's return to Final Fantasy XIV and a crash course in Riichi Mahjong, Peter's take on Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 7 (enthusiastically defended as entertainment, explicitly not art), the emotional weight of the new At the Gates album The Ghost of a Future Dead, and a handful of other metal releases. The G.I. Joe discussion turns into a genuinely good riff on comics history, the widescreen movement, and what it feels like to read a 1982 military action comic with 2025 eyes.SHOW NOTESEden returns to Final Fantasy XIV: The new expansion Everkold was announced and Eden is skeptical of the premise. They made a new character on a new data center with a self-imposed gimmick — only picking classes that use magic, which leads to some fun justifications for Dark Knight and Reaper.Riichi Mahjong crash course: Eden attended a learn-to-play Mahjong event at a local board game lounge and has been practicing at the Gold Saucer in FFXIV. The tiles are described as resembling Haribo frogs — thick, satisfying, extremely edible-looking.Eden's reading: Clematis and Wisteria series: A contemporary fantasy series set in a majocracy where healers are second-class citizens bonded to mages. Features two prickly, genuinely unlikable protagonists in a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers arc. Eden is several books in and very much into it.Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 7: Peter finished it and reaffirmed his position that it is not art — it is McDonald's. A fun, genre-appropriate palate cleanser, nothing more. This generated at least one spirited reply from a listener on social media that Peter declined to further engage with.Dresden Files Book 18 (Cold Days): Peter is halfway through and pleasantly surprised by how contemplative and low-action it is so far — Harry processing trauma rather than punching things. He expects crazy stuff by the end.Metal roundup: Peter covers several recent releases — Grief Collector's The Death of All Dreams (classic doom), A Dream of Poe's Katabasis: A Marriage Among Ashes (gothic/symphonic doom from Portugal, came with a personal thank-you email from the artist), Avertat's Dead End Life (death-doom), and Sepultura's swan-song EP The Cloud of Unknowing. Peter delivers a hot take defending post-Max Sepultura and does not mince words about the Cavalera brothers. At the Gates — The Ghost of a Future Dead: The most affecting music note of the episode. Lead vocalist Tomas Lindberg was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, recorded demo vocals for the entire album in one day before surgery, and ultimately died from the disease. The band completed the album using those recordings. Peter calls it a real banger and a worthy send-off.G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (Issues 1–4): The main topic. Both Peter and Eden started skeptical — Peter "made a hundreds of dollars mistake" on the Kickstarter — but came around by issue three when a self-rebuilding mech shows up. Eden provides a solid comics theory digression on the widescreen movement, Silver Age overexplaining, and where 1982 G.I. Joe sits in that history. Larry Hama's background (Asian American, invented characters alongside Hasbro, writing it into his 60s) gets discussed, as does the book's period-typical racism and sexism, Snake Eyes' ambiguous deal, and Cobra's complete lack of motivation.Free Comic Book Day plug: Eden reminds listeners that Free Comic Book Day is the following Saturday. The Dungeon Crawler Carl zero issue will be available. Eden also shouts out G.I. Joe: Silent Missions and a single issue written by friend-of-the-shop Phil Hester.

It's wisteria season — and flower-filled streets in Notting Hill and Kensington have become littered with visitors keen to take a picture in front of pastel coloured houses, with the viral flowers in shot. In this episode, host Tamara Kormornick speaks to Standard journalist Niva Yadav, to discuss whether it is fair to take pictures of people's homes, and whether security measures will be taken to curb the anti-social behaviour of some wisteria enthusiasts in London.Clips: Universal Pictures, ITV News (Faye Barker) Hosted on Acast. In April 1930, a young socialite - cheated of her inheritance by the laws of primogeniture - walked into a Kentish ruin; no electricity, no drains, a farmyard of "squalor and slovenly disorder"... and spent what money she had to buy it.Thirty years later, Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson had made what her biographer called her "one magnificent act of creation" - ten garden rooms enclosed in old brick and yew; a tower for her books; and a Spring Garden that Harold called his "life's work".This week, Geoff and Rory return to Sissinghurst; to the Tudor courtier who built the tower, the French prisoners who gave it its name, the marriage that conceived a garden... and the magical moment in April when the Lime Walk blossoms.A spring gardens special - please join us!If you enjoy tuning in, please consider supporting us by joining one of our membership tiers on our Patreon page - we love getting to know members of our community. Love — From a child's point of view: •“When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So, my grandfather does it for her all the time, even after his hands got arthritis too. That's love.” •“When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. If done at the wrong time of the year, cut-stumping wisteria can strangle the trees they're wrapped around.
Native wistaria (Wisteria frutescens), also known as "swamp wisteria," isn't as showy as its invasive cousins and blooms later.
Master Gardener, Emily Clem, and Extension Agent, Kathy Terry-Warner, dig deep on the subject of invasive plants. Many of the invasives were originally planted for their ornamental look (think Wisteria, Nandina, Bradford Pear, English Ivy, etc.) but have since taken over and now threaten our native plants and wildlife. ACES (Alabama Cooperative Extension System) has designated 2026 as the Year of Invasive Plants! They encourage both education and eradication and are hosting a number of events for the public to participate in getting rid of these unruly plants in communities and backyard landscapes. Wisteria doesn't just strangle trees, it can completely obscure the ground below from sunlight, creating a dark dead zone.
Amanda McNulty says you can spell it "wisteria" or "wistaria," but please don't plant it.
One plant, two spellings. Host Amanda McNulty explains what information you'll discover online based on how you type the name of this blooming vine.

This week, we're heading to RHS Garden Wisley to discover how its horticulturists are turning one of the wettest starts to the year on record into a garden that's primed for spring. Team leader Helen Bensted-Smith shares some top tips for gardening in persistently soggy conditions, and explains why increasingly wet winters and dry summers are challenges we need to adapt to rather than battle against. Guy Barter takes us on a seasonal stroll through Oakwood, which is coming into its own at this time of year, and has plenty of take-home ideas for gardening in damp shade. And finally, we popped in to see Liam Anderson, who's hard at work pruning the 75m Wisteria Walk. In just a few months, it will be transformed into a spectacular tunnel of cascading purple and white blooms. Episode 156 - The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India HoltonFebruary is our Month of Love, and this pick was a complete accident, but a delightful one. Sam picked up The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels expecting a cozy historical mystery and instead got flying houses, chaotic romance, and an absurdly charming story that won us over immediately.Sam and Hannah talk about why this book works so well, how its humor and tone set it apart, and why sometimes the best reading experiences come from wildly incorrect expectations. The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Many of us have experienced the surge in powdery mildew, ushered in by the hot, dry summer we've had. To find out more about this unwanted fungal force and how to manage it, we're speaking to RHS Senior Plant Pathologist Dr Jassy Drakulic. Late summer is also the perfect time to prune your wisteria to ensure the best blooms next spring. We're speaking to this custodian of Wisley's Wisteria Walk, Liam Anderson to pick up his top tips for success at home. And Nick Turrell returns with a curious question. He's shining a spotlight on one familiar feature found in almost every garden in the country, asking us to think about why it's really there. Welcome back to the It's All Greek Retrospective series that contains previously aired short segments about gardening acronyms, jargon, and botanical nomenclature. In this third and last part of a series, Master Gardener Jean Thomas covers plants that have been named after people, a discussion about soil pH, and a range of acronyms. The first short segment covers the popularity of naming plants for people. It's been going on since people began naming plants at all, dating back to at least four centuries BC. Two causes are usually to blame; either the ego of the “discoverer” or the desire to flatter someone powerful. There are often great stories to uncover. One of the most interesting is the name of the Christmas standard, the Poinsettia (not poinTsettia). Dr, Joel Poinsett was the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico and an avid plant collector. His life story is a colorful one, but the only reason anyone remembers his name is because of the seasonal flower. Actually, the history of the flower and its interaction with humans is equally interesting. Some other names every gardener is familiar with are: Forsyth because this gentleman (1737-1804) was a respected palace gardener in England and was honored with the name of the familiar Forsythia; Kasper Wister (died in 1818) was a famous botanist in Pennsylvania and honored with the name of the popular Wisteria. Wister and Forsyth were honored by the English botanist Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859), who spent over thirty years cataloging plants in the U.S., and had the power to assign formal names to plants. The familiar Magnolia x soulangeana was named by and for Pierre Magnol and m. Soulange-Boudin, and developed from two Chinese species. Many familiar shrubs bear the species names (like Sargentii( C.S. Sargent), Fortuneii (R. Fortune), Thunbergii ( Carl Peter Thunberg)), named for contemporaries and students of Linnaeus. Many plant and animal names honor the interesting Pere Armand David with the appelation “davidii.” The familiar Fuchsia (Dr. Fuchs) and Dahlia (Dr. Dahl) are good herbaceous examples. The large Lobelia group (415 species) was named by Linnaeus himself for Dr. Mathias De Lobile. The conversation then moves on to one of the great topics discussed by gardeners without a real understanding of the mechanism. The pH of soil is crucially important and measured and adjusted fanatically by gardeners. The way the chemistry works is described, starting with the litmus papers we dealt with in school science classes. Cations and anions are the active ions that determine how soil makes nutrition available to plants. A scale is used, with one end called acid and the other end called alkaline. The place on the scale tells the soil's description as to what kinds of nutrients are best assimilated. “Acid” soil is best for blueberries and Rhododendrons and “Alkaline” soil is better for Lilacs and Spirea. Gardeners assiduously “adjust” the soil with amendments like sulfur or wood ash, remembering that this takes several seasons to effect. Jean closes this segment with an aside about names where she wonders about Monkshood, Begonias and Darth Vader. The final segment moves on to acronyms, which translates to “names from the extremities.” It refers to new names for things created from the initials of word describing the things. Like Scuba, Laser, and Yahoo. There is also another related usage of initials called initialism, where the actual letters are sounded out, not merged into a new word. For instance, AT&T or DEC. Both of these practices are twentieth century phenomena. Further discussion of acronyms leads us to AVID, CRISP and PRISM, all popular programs in New York, devised by Cornell and the NY Department of Conservation. In a nutshell, the ideal acronym is an invented word that should either help recognize its subject or be catchy enough to be memorable and relatable to its subject. There's a new theater company that opened about a mile from Dennis's home in North Hollywood called The Wisteria Theater and it's a magical place. The show that's currently running there is Xanadu: The Musical, based on the iconic Olivia Newton-John movie musical that Dennis has been obsessed with since 1980. In this episode, Dennis welcomes the team behind the show to play a couple rounds of his game You Don't Know My Life! The five guests are Renée Wylder (Producer and Wisteria Theater co-founder), acress Lexi Collins (Kira, Wisteria Theater company co-founder), actors Connor Bullock (Sonny) and Kelby Thwaits (Danny) as well as the show's director Brayden Hade. The two questions posed during the game are 1) "Xanadu is a story about dreams. When was a time in your life when you thought, OMG, this is a dream come true?" And 2) You come across an old diary entry with the headline A Night at the Theater I'll Never Forget. What happens in it?" Their stories involve everything from scoring big career breaks to on stage mishaps to trying to do a show in a tornado to pigging out on chips and tacos at Salsa y Beer down the street from the Wisteria. This is an episode about a girl who has been on a quest to find her next full bottle purchase. This is also an episode about the paralysis of choice. Luckily, we have a little time, some microphones, and a few people out there willing to hear her story. Also, The Game this week doesn't help shorten the list, that's for sure, but I think we make it out with her selections (kinda).Movie Reference - Desert Fury (1947)Rival Podcast Episode Reference - How did Stéle Become a Household Name on Perfume Room by the great Emma Vernon(00:00) - - Talking about Hellenist and Racyne (08:15) - - Byredo Absolu (14:58) - - The Gift of Wisteria by Aerin (19:27) - - Jane's Quest (33:28) - - Scents We've Been Wearing (39:37) - - The Game Scents Mentioned in this Episode:le chant d'achille by Hellenist / Petit Matin by Maison Francis Kurkdjian / les brass de morphee by Hellenist / Quelque Part and La Terre La Nuit by Racyn / Bal d'Afrique Absolu and Rose of No Man's Land Absolu by Byredo / Oud for Greatness by Initio Parfums / Wisteria by Aerin* / Nitesurf Neroli by Régime des Fleurs / Jasmin by Le Galion / Tonka Latte by Dustia Parfums / Bianco Latte by Giardini Di Toscana / Iris Nazarena by Aedes de Venustas / Ossuary by La Curie / Jours Heureux, Fleurs d'Été, Monsieur, Vermeil, and La Vie en Fleurs by Bienaimé / Comete by Chanel / Borneo 1834 by Serge Lutens / Saffron Hamra by Amouage / Essence Rare by Houbigant / Tropical by Arquiste / Fumabat by Couteau de Poche / Invasion Barbare by Parfums MDCI / No 3 Cologne Curiouse, No 15 Jungle Tobacoo, and No 1 Alkemist Pepper by Binet-Papilion / Falling Trees by Régime des Fleurs / China White by Nasomatto / Feminité du Bois by Serge Lutens / Les Cahiers Secrets by Jouissance / Bal d'Afrique by Byredo / Heliotrope Milkbath by Universal Flowering / Salome by Papillon / Ma Bete by Eris Parfums / Flor de Selva by La Boticá / Amber Teutonic by DS & Durga / Copala by Xinu / Cobra & The Canary by Imaginary Authors / Vanille Antique, Casablanca Lily, Reine de Nuit by Byredo / Jasmin Kama by Rania J / Delta of Venus by Eris Parfums / Peau by Arquiste / Another 13 by Le Labo / Molecule 01 & 02 by Escentric Molecules / Heliodose by MarlouThe Game:Scapular by Chapel Factory / Dandelion Butter by Clue Perfumery / Vetiver by Le Galion / Unspoken Musk by Franscesca Bianchi / Soho by La Boticá / Tropical by ArqusitePlease feel free to email us at hello@fragraphilia.com - Send us questions, comments, or recommendations. From disappearing households and mysterious foreign nationals to international crime bosses and a little breaking and entering, "The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge" has all the makings of a classic Holmes tale with none of the panache that sets some of them apart. Sarah and Marisa discuss this bizarre little story, which comes from "His Last Bow." We appreciate your patience with some echo in our audio this week - we did some recording on the go! How much can you learn about pruning when your loppers are older than most Influencers? It turns out, quite a lot when you're taught by the right people. This week, Leslie grills Marianne on her recent trip to the UK and the Great Dixter Symposium where pruning was on the menu (along with some incredible food thanks to Claire Rooney @thelayeredcook Now's the time to get into the garden and prune, and the girls advocate a bold approach (with a little insurance on the side). From Rosa rugosa to Wisteria ahem sinensis (and frutescens), cautious pruners may just find that the pruning jobs they dreaded are now the best part of gardening. But what, exactly, do knife fights and crotches have to do with pruning? You'll have to listen. Or watch! THE TIGER OF DAMASCUS - Our intruder that found his way back to the crime scene dressed as an officer was still at large. But it was our turn now to take to the skies, and hopefully not be shot at for sport. We just had to track down Sherlock first and we'd be on our way. But he was busy... doing something.. weird. Apologies for the technical error at the end of the episode. A stubborn glitch proving difficult to remove from our end. We're checking with Spotify and Goalhanger. THEY FELL FROM THE SKY - we were dumbfounded, staggered, distraught. How was this possible? That these men would find themselves scattered in pieces over a Surrey crop field. I could see even in the great Detective's eyes that he was struggling. And I mean Sherlock there, not bloody Baynes. THE VANISHING HOST - To look at John Scott Eccles was to look upon your average looking accountant. Sorry accountants. Yet so there was so much more to this man than that first appearance. That first appearance on our doorstep, flustered, bewildered and hellbent on telling us a fascinating story of international subterfuge, a global criminal web and of course how he woke up in Wisteria Lodge all alone. Sounds like a problem for Sherlock and Co Ltd. Episode description: Part 1 of 3 This episode contains gore, depictions of death and swearing Listener discretion is advised.
