On this edition of the Richard Crouse Show we meet Emm Gryner. She is a Canadian musician and vocal coach. David Bowie named Emm as one of his two favourite Canadian acts. U2 frontman Bono named her song “Almighty Love” as one of six songs that he wished he had written. Gryner toured in David Bowie's band, singing and playing keyboards, and appears on the recordings Bowie at the Beeb and Glastonbury 2000. Emm helped make the first music video in outer space with Chris Hadfield and is also the author of a book called “The Healing Power of Singing: Raise Your Voice, Change Your Life: What Touring With David Bowie, Single Parenting And Ditching The Music Business Taught Me In 25 Easy Steps.” Her new album is “Business & Pleasure” is a celebration of the Detroit radio scene and the music that shaped her childhood. From Motown, jazz and pop, to Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac and the Doobies, Business & Pleasure is infused with the sunshine soul and stellar playing of the late 70s and early 80s. Then, Gord Sinclair stops by. Best known as the bass player and one of the songwriters in The Tragically Hip, he is now a “reluctant solo artist” with a new album called In Continental Drift, available now wherever you buy fine music. Finally, we go into the vault to revisit my interview with the late, great rock photographer Mick Rock. He is often referred to as ‘The Man Who Shot the Seventies', for his iconic images of Syd Barrett, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Queen, The Ramones, Blondie, Rocky Horror Picture Show, etc. London born, he has resided in New York for over 35 years. He has shot over 100 album covers. Rock was instrumental in creating many key rock ‘n' roll images, such as album covers for Syd Barrett's Madcap Laughs, Lou Reed's Transformer and Coney Island Baby, Iggy and The Stooges' Raw Power, Queen's Queen II (recreated for their classic music video ‘Bohemian Rhapsody') and Sheer Heart Attack, The Ramones End of the Century and Joan Jett's I Love Rock ‘n' Roll, among many others. He was the chief photographer on the films The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus. He recently shot special stills for the new TV version of Rocky Horror, featuring the transgender actress Laverne Cox as Frank n Furter. He also produced and directed the seminal music videos for Bowie: ‘John, I'm Only Dancing', ‘Jean Genie', ‘Space Oddity', and ‘Life On Mars'.

Next up, Ilona Daniel, Harrowsmith's relatively new food editor explains how Anne of Green Gables and a father named Gilbert changed her life.  Emm Gryner - Uncovering Your Voice Emm Gryner's new book, The Healing Power of Singing, is, yes, a practical guide to becoming a strong singer and making it in the music business. But, it's more than that. The book is full of poignant stories of the triumphs and heartbreaks in Gryner's own life, and the idea of uncovering your voice, putting yourself in the path of opportunity and finding strong mentors is advice we all could use whether we sound like Sinatra or not. This week on the Richard Crouse Show Podcast: Remember “The Safety Dance”? Of course you do. The Men Without Hats song was a worldwide hit in 1982 and earned them a Grammy nomination but it didn't end there. It has since been covered by everyone from “Weird Al” Yankovic to the cast of Glee to a recent version by Angel Olsen. The song's writer and lead singer, Ivan Doroschuk, joins me today from his home on Vancouver Island to talk about some new music and a reimagination of his biggest hit. Men Without Hats have just released “Again (Part 1),” a five-song EP featuring covers of The Tragically Hip, Lou Reed, The Rolling Stones and Mott the Hoople, along with an all-new version of the group's signature hit “The Safety Dance,” now called “No Friends of Mine.” Then we meet Emm Gryner. Emm helped make the first music video in outer space with Chris Hadfield and is now the author of a new book called “The Healing Power of Singing: Raise Your Voice, Change Your Life: What Touring With David Bowie, Single Parenting And Ditching The Music Business Taught Me In 25 Easy Steps.”

This week on the Richard Crouse Show Podcast we get to know Danis Goulet who wrote and directed “Night Raiders,” a timely sci fi apocalyptic film set in the near future. In her dystopian drama cities in North America are run by the military and all children are property of the state. This Taika Waititi-executive produced film sees a Cree woman team with a group of vigilantes to free her daughter from a “children's academy.” Goulet, who is of Cree and Métis descent, says everything in the film's imaginary future is based on true events and “has to do specifically with policies that were inflicted upon Indigenous People throughout history.” Then we meet radio and podcasting legends Humble and Fred, that's "Humble" Howard Glassman and Fred Patterson as they celebrate ten years of the “Humble and Fred Podcast.” These days everybody from Bruce Springsteen and Barack Obama to Kim Kardashian West have podcasts, but ten years ago they were uncharted territory. Humble and Fred, who, as their website says, “have been entertaining Canadians since 1989” as a team on radio jumped into podcasting when their time in radio dried up. It was a newish technology and they dove in, creating a show that built an audience and, more importantly, maintained that audience over ten years. Find out more at http://www.humbleandfredradio.com. Then we go to the vault to hear a vintage interview with Hugh jackman. The actor gets personal, talking about the projects that worked, the ones that didn't and what drives him.

Hey, y'all. I am Shay. This is thebuzzr podcast. Independent music releases, global coverage. Welcome & enjoy. Episode 71. First, music trivia for August 16th. August 16, 1977, we lost the “King of Rock ‘n' Roll” Elvis Presley. RIP Elvis. We feature String Bone today. Southern Ontario songwriter Barry James Payne is the architect of String Bone. String Bone brings Payne's true life narratives close to the ear with tender arrangements supporting his gruff sincerity, well worn by the rumble of the road. The career of Payne in music has spanned from performing to working the back end. He is the founder of the first Canadian Songwriter's Association. The artist is a gift to Canada. An incredible talent. “Americana to the bone, Canadiana in the heart & soul.” Enjoy the show! Tracks "Waiting For My Dying Day" 31:38:40 "Two Stars Collide" 39:50:88 From the artist Source Americana to the bone, Canadiana in the heart & soul Heart and home are often elusive for those whose spirits are drawn to the open road. Sit back, buckle up and ride along with String Bone down winding highways, around sharp turns, on great escapes and daring rescues with searching songs in pursuit of home for an unbound heart. An unbreakable bone nut creates the essential contact point between a guitar's strings and the wooden body; String Bone draws the chaotic vibrations of the restless heart closer to its desire for gravity with songs of adventure bearing the weight left behind. Southern Ontario songwriter Barry James Payne is the architect of String Bone, and brings listeners to a collection of artfully designed songs and stories with "Love & Highways", his latest full-length recording. String Bone brings Payne's true life narratives close to the ear with tender arrangements supporting his gruff sincerity, well worn by the rumble of the road. Many of Payne's songs on 'Love & Highways' as well as his debut 'nadir' drive through darkness, betrayal and remorse towards love, light, escape and freedom on the road ahead with String Bone at the wheel. Payne shares struggles with relationships, and wrestles in the aftermath of lost wishes and broken dreams with an eye towards the next adventure. Unraveling ten melodic originals and two well-chosen covers from Neil Young and Radiohead, 'Love & Highways' features a full complement of players including pedal steel by Steve Wood, electric guitar by the album's producer Shannon Lyon, cello by Ben Bolt-Martin and violins by Payne's 'Rant Maggie Rant' band-mate Lindsay Schindler. In the passenger seat on "Love & Highways" is a stellar collection of guest vocalists including Sarah Jane Scouten, Mae Moore and longtime String Bone collaborator Ginger St. James, who also co-wrote 'Where Do You Go'.  Violinist Lindsay Schindler also contributes to trio harmonies on a soaring cover of Neil Young's "Birds" with Trent Severn collaborators Dayna Manning and Emm Gryner.  Roman Tome (New Country Rehab) contributes background vocals to "Somber Eyes", as well as percussion on five of the album's tracks. "Love & Highways" was recorded by Shannon Lyon at Lyon's Lake Studio in Point Clark and Bayfield, Ontario at sessions through 2015 and 2016, with additional sessions at Stratford's Knox Presbyterian Church by John Hazen (Loreena McKennitt, Rita Chiarelli, Harry Belafonte). He has shared the stage with Juno (Canada's Grammy) nominees and winners and some among them include Bill Bourne, Danny Michel, Emm Gryner, Luke Doucet, Loreena McKennitt, Linda McRae, Jenny Whitely and he has collaborated with the likes of Ginger St. James, Shannon Lyon, Bob Egan (ex-Blue Rodeo, ex-Wilc https://youtu.be/XkGy9gck92Y Video conceptualized, directed and edited by Emma Hefkey: emmahefkey @ hotmail dot com Song: Waitin' For My Dyin' Day Artist: String Bone (with George Leger III) (Written by Barry James Payne and George Leger III) https://youtu.be/DAzjn99qHCk

Today I had the privilege of talking to singer, songwriter Sarah Smith. For Sarah Smith, the time has come to say more, show more, and share an even deeper truth with her fans, courtesy of her brand new album, Unveiling. As Sarah says in the album liner notes, the songs are about opening yourself to a new future, and believing that the right road lies ahead. It's a truth she's come to know the hard way through years of spiritual and musical development. Music is Sarah's full-time passion. She continues to tour prolifically, playing around 300 dates per year in Canada, the United States, and Europe. Along the way, she has shared the stage with artists including Carole Pope, Sass Jordan, Biff Naked, Emm Gryner, Joel Plaskett, David Wilcox, 54-40 and many others. Whether it's just her and her acoustic guitar or her full band, she is simply a mesmerizing performer. Her social activism includes playing shows and sharing her story in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Addictions Services of Thames Valley, My Sister's Place, Anova, and Vanier Children's Services. Sarah has won many awards throughout her career. She was named Best Adult Contemporary Artist at the Toronto Independent Music Awards and has earned multiple honours at the Jack Richardson/Forest City London Music Awards, including the Rock and Singer/Songwriter awards. Emm Gryner talking about her life in music, working with David Bowie, collaborating with astronaut Chris Hadfield on a cover version of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" with David Bowie. Gryner started her music career in Toronto, working office jobs during the day while honing her live show in small, local clubs by night. Gryner entered her original song "Wisdom Bus" in a nationwide songwriting contest sponsored by Standard Broadcasting, and won. With the money from this prize, she recorded an album called The Original Leap Year and released it on her own Dead Daisy Records. The album attracted the attention of Violent Femmes producer, Warren Bruleigh. Bruleigh passed the album onto an exec at Mercury Records who signed Gryner. The result was Public, a Britpop-inspired album that yielded a hit in Canada called "Summerlong." Several tours followed, with Ron Sexsmith, Bernard Butler, Rufus Wainwright and others. After Universal Music took over Mercury Records, Gryner was dropped from the label and returned to her own Dead Daisy Records. She released several albums, two of which went on to be nominated for Best Pop Album of the Year at the Juno Awards. During this time, Gryner moved to New Paltz, NY and Los Angeles to write and tour. She also took a job singing and playing keyboards in David Bowie’s band.[8] The gig saw Gryner performing with Bowie at Glastonbury Festival, on Later with Jools Holland and other venues around America and Europe. She appears on Bowie at the Beeb, a live album. After leaving Bowie’s band, Gryner moved to Montreal and released an album called Songs of Love and Death which was made up of cover versions of Irish songs by The Undertones, The Virgin Prunes, Horslips, Thin Lizzy, The Thrills and others. Recorded in a house she shared with Kate McGarrigle, the album attracted the attention of Irish media. Gryner found a champion in Pat Egan, a legendary promoter and manager based in Dublin, and he set up her first shows. In 2005, Gryner signed Atlantic Canadian indie band In-Flight Safety. The band went on to receive national acclaim, capture several awards and receive a Juno nomination for Best Video of the Year in 2007. Gryner subsequently signed Toronto songwriter Royal Wood and released his album, A Good Enough Day through Dead Daisy. In 2006, Gryner released The Summer of High Hopes produced by Nathan Larson. The album was released in Canada and later in Ireland on the heels of a performance at Oxegen Festival.

I catch up with singer-songwriter Emm Gryner. The Canadian artist recently released "Only of Earth,” the first in a planned trilogy she calls Days of Games. She toured in the late David Bowie’s band and more recently helped her friend, the retired astronaut Chris Hadfield, record a version of Bowie’s Space Oddity, which was recorded partly onboard The International Space Station. Emm also talks about the cover songs she has recorded.

Emm Gryner has found the sweet spot between being an independent artist and raising a family. In her early 20s Gryner had a hit song on the radio, toured with David Bowie and then transitioned to a successful career as an independent artist. Her songwriting has been praised by the likes of Bono and we discuss how a songwriting contest led to her radio hit. We discuss the difference between writing a hit for radio and writing to explore her own feelings. Gryner was also the driving force behind the recording of Bowie's "Space Oddity," by Chris Hadfield, in outer space while he was the commander of the International Space Station.  As well as touring to support her own work Gryner is also the founder of the popular folk act "Trent Severn." Watch for Gryner's upcoming project "Only of Earth," an 80's synth-pop and 70's classic rock-infused album. Show Notes. Dayna Manning is one of Canada's most accomplished singer songwriters. When she was in her teens she had a hit song on the radio and soon after that found herself, in the words of Joni Mitchell, "Stoking the star maker machinery behind the popular song." At times the chat you are about to listen to unfolds like an episode of the popular TV show Nashville, except it's not a TV show. This is the story of a real person, trying to make a difference in her community and the world through music. We discuss how Tom Petty was an influence, and her work with Grammy award winning music producer and engineer Jim Scott. As well as having a successful solo career, these days Dayna is playing sold out concerts with Emm Gryner and Lindsay Schindler as part of the popular trio Trent Severn.
