The Swap Meet is a market-stall sprawl of finds from across the spectrum of black music, where the logic is curatorial rather than chronological. Pass go at the Chicago soul continuum: Jerry Butler's Gamble & Huff productions sitting near Terry Callier's folk-tinged melancholy and Jill Scott's 21st century soul interpretation - alongside the Philly institution of MFSB's "Love Is the Message," one of those eternal records. Rufus and Chaka comes from their mid-70s peak on ABC, Campbell revisits Jhelisa's "Friendly Pressure" part of the '94 Acid Jazz scene (on Dorado) before switching to Brothers Johnson's jazz-funk alongside Spyro Gyra and The Crusaders. Further afield Gilberto Gil's "Maracatu Atômico" and the Aposento Alto gospel cut sit in the same programme as Tapper Zukie's Kingston pressure, Area Code 615's Nashville session-player funk, and a clutch of contemporary releases demonstrate that the search ain't over; sampling Chuck Bynum, The Mighty Tiny & The Many Few, and Glenn Meinecke. The modern soul pocket is well covered: Odyssey, Two Tons of Fun, Steve Parks, the Dianne Reeves track from her pre-Blue Note years. That's the blurb - now it's time to listen.

Show broadcast Feb 22 2026 Something special was happening in Philadelphia in the 1970s. Thom Bell, Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, Sigma Sound Studios, the musicians of MFSB (mother father sister brother), Bunny Sigler – all of these folks came together, with a bunch of incredibly talented singers, to create Philly Soul. Beautifully produced, lush with strings and horns, catchy with crisp high hats and four on the floor bass drum, Philly Soul folded funk into R&B and paved the way for the rise of disco, while encompasing so much more. On this week’s show, we throw the spotlight on those fabulous grooves. The post The Sound of Philadelphia appeared first on Living in the 70s.
Words taken from From the article written by Aaron Gonsher of the NYC Times. My tribute was turning this into a podcast. I've vocalised some of my comments. No credit needed for me here just pulled it together as a tribute show. On Valentine's Day in 1970, David Mancuso hosted a private party called Love Saves the Day in his loft at 647 Broadway in New York, a few blocks north of Houston Street. He was an audio obsessive with a voracious appetite for spiritual sounds and a profound sense of community, and the event was an opportunity to bring together friends in a setting unfettered by commercial demands, or the restrictions of their outside lives. Tracks Chuck Mangione featuring Esther Satterfield, ‘Land of Make Believe' (A&M, 1973) Les Troubadours du Roi Baudouin, ‘Missa Luba' (Philips, 1958) Andwella, ‘Hold On to Your Mind' (Reflection, 1970) Nina Simone, ‘Here Comes the Sun' (RCA/Victor, 1971) War, ‘City, Country, City' (United Artists, 1972) Manu Dibango, ‘Soul Makossa' (Fiesta/Atlantic, 1972) MFSB, ‘Love Is the Message' (Philadelphia International, 1973) Blackbyrds, ‘Walking in Rhythm' (Fantasy, 1975) Ashford & Simpson, ‘Stay Free' (Warner Bros., 1979) Steve Miller Band, ‘Macho City (Long Version)' (Capitol, 1981) Code 718, ‘Equinox (Heavenly Club Mix)' (Strictly Rhythm, 1992) Karma, ‘High Priestess' (Groove Attack Productions, 1995) I hope you enjoy the journey. Dedicated to those that know x

In this episode we welcome the great soul scribe Tony Cummings to Hammersmith to discuss the subject of his classic 1975 book The Sound of Philadelphia. Tony travelled all the way down from his adopted Stoke-on-Trent to answer our questions about his earliest musical passions in his native Plymouth and the launch of his pioneering '60s fanzines Soul, Soul Music and Shout. He goes on to talk about his contributions to (and editorship of) Black Music magazine – and his deep immersion in the "Philly Soul" sound patented by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Thom Bell. We hear about the extraordinary stable of musicians who performed on timeless hits by acts such as the O'Jays, the Three Degrees and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. Clips from audio interviews with Kenny Gamble and – from 1976 – the Stylistics' Herb Murrell prompt reflections on the lavish sound and sophistication of R&B classics by everyone from the Delfonics and Jerry Butler to Teddy Pendergrass and McFadden & Whitehead. Many thanks to special guest Tony Cummings. Pieces discussed: Inside the Philly Sound, MFSB, TCB, The Stylistics, Gamble-Huff, Thom Bell and the Philly Groove, Hit Producer Thom Bell: Philly Soul & the R&B Flugelhorn, "Philadelphia was the party with a tormented soul", Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff audio, The Stylistics' Herb Murrell audio, Why are we so hard on our music press? and Linkin Park.

A nudisco celebration of the music of Philadelphia International Records and the role it played in the development of disco. Founded in 1971 by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, the label's original vision was to rival Berry Gordy's Motown organisation. Gamble and Huff were also responsible for writing many of the label's greatest hits, which often featured their own in-house orchestra MFSB (or Mother Father Sister Brother). Gamble and Huff have also been activists supporting the black community and improving south Philadelphia. They created Universal Companies which in 2003 partnered with others in a $100 million plan to construct and renovate 400 homes. Together they have written over 3,000 songs producing 175 gold and platinum records, making them some of the most prolific songwriters of all time. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. Mixed with love in London. XX F*All the original tracks are available on Spotify, where you'll find the playlist so you can create your own mix. GRAMMY® Award Winning Multi-Instrumentalist, Producer, Songwriter and Arranger ~Philly Int'l, MFSB, Gamble & Huff Tribute to the Songwriter, Musician, Bobby Eli (1946-2023)Intro Music ~ TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) '73. Composed by Kenneth Gamble and Leon HuffMusic by MFSB , Vocals by The Three Degrees(C) 1973 TSOP/Philadelphia International Records, Inc.My Music Flashback Series continues this week featuring the genre of R& B. Soul & Funk.It can be a great tribute to a music artist when their style can influence current pop culture for century's & decades. The genre of Soul, R & B & Funk is taken for granted today & the influence is heard & seen in grooves, style & fashions most of todays' pop artists. However, the original recording artists truly paid dues to get in the position to not only become recording artists, but to write & produce their work. At that time, some of the artists who created a new innovative style had the challenge of the music executives not understanding the genre, and some even refusing to promote the compositions. Today we call this music - classics & the artists trailblazers. My guest this week in one of them. Bobby Eli is a Grammy Award Winning, internationally acclaimed Grammy Winning Record Producer, Engineer, Songwriter, Arranger and Multi-Instrumentalist. Bobby was a founding member of the famed Philadelphia studio group, MFSB. If the music is Philadelphia International, Gamble & Huff / TSOP. Bobby's music is more than likely on it. His signature guitar licks can be heard on countless gold and platinum hit recordings by artists such as: Chris Brown, Jay Z, George Clinton, Elton John, David Bowie, Hall and Oats, The Jacksons, MFSB, The Ojay's, Teddy Pendergrass, The Stylistics, Lou Rawls,Salsoul Orchestra, Patti Labelle, Phyllis Hyman, B.B. King, Dixie Hummingbirds, Billy Paul, The Spinners, Johnny Mathis, Deniece Williams, Wilson Pickett, Dusty Springfield, Nancy Wilson, and many other wonderful artists too numerous to mention. As a songwriter and producer Eli was responsible for such monster hits as the Grammy winning number one song, “Love Won't Let Me Wait”, as recorded by Luther Vandross, “Sideshow” and “Three Ring Circus” by Blue Magic, “Just Don't Want To Be Lonely” by the Main Ingredient, the first two albums by: “Atlantic Starr”, self titled and “Straight to the Point”, the Grammy nominated album: “Love Niecy Style” by Deniece Williams, Rose Royce's number one U.K. hit single “Magic Touch” and their album” Music Magic”. Bobby was responsible for the Jackie Moore number one dance classic,” This Time Baby”, the number one international hit singles “Zoom” by Fat Larry's Band and “Love Town” by Booker Newberry III.Artists as diverse as Luther Vandross, BeBe & CeCe Winans, Shaggy, Regina Belle, The Whispers, Isaac Hayes, The Dells, Sister Sledge, Englebert Humperdink, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and an array ofothers have recorded Bobby's songs.Bobby now owns and operates The Grooveyard @ Studio E, a recording facility in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. His intimate studio is only minutes from his hometown, The City Of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. Here Eli is keeping real music alive and continues to be guiding light and inspiration to musicians and artists everywhere© 2024 Building Abundant Success!!2024 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

Hello everyone, Billy Amendola here on Drum Channel with my long-time friend and R&B/Soul legend Earl Young. Earl, known as the founder and singer of the group The Trammps, (and recording drummer) took the disco world to the mainstream pop charts with their smash hit “Disco Inferno” among others. Always having success as both a vocalist as well as a drummer, many didn't realize that Earl, along with the rhythm section, of the late, Ronnie Baker and Norman Harris, created what's known as TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) Along with producers/songwriters Gamble & Huff, the trio went on to record classic R&B/Soul hits throughout the 70s. Creating a sound all their own. When the Baker, Harris, and Young hit-making machine stretched out to form MFSB and Salsoul Orchestra, the trio took their trademark sound with them. Let's listen in on how Earl's career started from his early childhood to his teens, to an adult, to a now young 84-year-old, who's still out playing and touring with his version of Earl Young and The Trammps. This show is a history lesson for sure. Enjoy!

Episode 80. Host Troy Saunders has his latest conversation with the legendary Helen Scott, one the founders of The Three Degrees, best known for their 1973 worldwide hit, “When Will I See You Again”. The Three Degrees have been doing it and doing it strong for over 60 years and this special episode will focus on their incredible career.Their manager Richard Barrett brought three young teenagers, Scott, Fayette Pinkney and Janet Harmon, together in Philadelphia. The three didn't know each other before joining the group, which recorded for the Philly-based Swan Records. They scored their first hit in 1965 with the single “Gee Baby (I'm Sorry),” which Troy plays a sample of.Troy says that The Three Degrees helped initiate Philadelphia International Records (“You can say it, I won't” quips Scott). Philly International is the legendary Kenneth Gamble & Leon Huff soul label that featured The O'Jays, Patti LaBelle, Teddy Pendergrass, and McFadden & Whitehead. Philadelphia International Records created a musical legacy that culminated in "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)," the 1974 hit recording by MFSB featuring vocals by The Three Degrees that was the theme for “Soul Train,” the first TV theme song (and perhaps the first disco song) to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. When Don Cornelius refused to allow any references to “Soul Train” in the single release, The Three Degrees' singing of the title was removed. But, the group would achieve their own major commercial success when “When Will I See You Again” became a hit later that year.Troy and Helen discuss how The Three Degrees had tremendous success in the U.K., where they performed for Prince Charles' 30th birthday celebration at Buckingham Palace. Not only did they tour the palace before most people were able to do so, but they were invited to attend the wedding reception of Prince Charles and Lady Diana, among the few Americans invited. The press even nicknamed The Three Degrees as “Charlie's Angels”. The group performed for almost every member of the royal family in support of their various trusts and charities.Helen is proud that The Three Degrees have maintained that name since 1963. It's been a joyful ride that not many groups have been able to accomplish. The conversation covers the wide range of styles that the group covered throughout their career and Helen is very open and candid in telling their amazing story. She also shares her suggestions to new artists who are just beginning their musical journey. This episode is a memorable dive into a great musical journey from the legendary singer who lived it.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Spotify, Stitcher and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. Moon Beats on the On Locations Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions at Decadence 12/30/22 About Moon Boots - Moon Boots and Pete Dougherty are technically the same person, but in many ways, the two couldn't be more different. The former is a globe-trotting extrovert whose genre-hopping (but always funky) DJ sets reliably fill dancefloors around the world. The latter is a relatively shy dude with a studio tan who has been geeking out on synths since he was a teenager. Born in Brooklyn, Pete spent his adolescence in the suburbs. Early formative musical memories include MFSB's “Love Is The Message” at block parties and years jamming to Daft Punk in the barn with a blacklight on. Pete moved to Chicago after college. The city transformed Pete and after a few years playing in the band Hey Champ, Moon Boots was born with series of releases for French Express. Quickly leveling up his craft, Pete signed with Anjunadeep and moved back to Brooklyn. The first Moon Boots album, First Landing, arrived in 2017, and was followed two years later by Bimini Road. Emphasizing melody while blending elements of house, disco, soul and R&B, both records were widely embraced – with over 100 million streams – and as they picked up steam, so did Moon Boots' DJ schedule. Over the years, the versatile selector has found himself playing everywhere from dimly lit clubs to massive festivals, but regardless of where the DJ booth is located, his objective remains the same: to keep people dancing, preferably with a giant smile on their face. Moon Boots' third album is now in the can, and will surface on Anjunadeep next year, as is a revamped Moon Boots live show, one in which Dougherty will showcase his musical chops while touring and performing with a full band. In a way, those shows (which are slated to begin in 2023) might be what finally puts the Dougherty / Moon Boots split to bed, allowing the timid musical whiz kid to step into the spotlight and assume his rightful place as the life of the party.
