Send us a Text Message.Waaay back in August of 2018 I was attending a Livingston Taylor songwriting and performing retreat at Boston University. We spent the day working on our songs and performance with Liv, Vance Gilbert and Melissa Ferrick. After dinner we all got our instruments and had an informal song swap in the main meeting room. This was kind of a round robin sort of thing where each of us would play a song and then the next person would play and so on. There was one guy who had been pretty quiet during the workshop, a little standoffish if I'm to be honest. So, I was pretty astonished when it came his turn to play. He pulled out his Martin and sang a great song, well performed. That person is Tod Pronto. I was impressed with Tod and started following his progress as he opened for Liv and Jonathan Edwards and other folk greats. Then, I found his Sunday morning 9am streaming show, Coffee with Tod on YouTube or on Facebook. Then, I found out that he also has a regular cartoon, Midlife Thesis, that is published every week. I mean, what can't he do? I'm Tim Rose and this is the Tim Tunes podcast. In this episode we'll interview dear friend and accomplished singer/songwriter/cartoonist Tod Pronto and listen to three of his songs recorded live during our visit. Support the Show. Please consider making a one time donation via the Paypal link aboveOr, consider becoming a monthly subscribing patron of the show here:https://www.patreon.com/timtunesAnd get lots of extra documentation and music associated with the show.

Wheels Off with Rhett Miller

Singer-songwriter Dar Williams joins Rhett to talk about the process of writing songs that matter, the importance of finding a supportive community, and tells Rhett about the music she's currently writing. The two discuss prioritizing authenticity over algorithmic success in today's creative environment, and Dar offers sage advice for aspiring musicians.  Dar Williams was always in the right place at the right time for the success she's had over a 25+-year career. She rose out of the vibrant mid-90's Boston scene, inspired by the eclectic influences of alt-rockers, Berklee jazz musicians, slam poets, and folk artists, like Patty Griffith, Melissa Ferrick, the Throwing Muses, Vance Gilbert, and Jonatha Brooke. After a year of touring non-stop with her first album, The Honesty Room, in 1994, she was invited by Joan Baez to tour in Europe and The United States. Her most recent album is 2021's I'll Meet You Here. Her book, How To Write A Song That Matters is available now. In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Maggie Mae. Maggie is one of the singer/songwriters that we saw perform at the Philadelphia Folk Festival back in August. She is a soulful singer-songwriter based in Philadelphia who fronts an exciting and energetic Folk/Funk group under the same name. She pulls inspiration from the music she grew up on and the strong musical foundation her family built, along with the ever-evolving world of music around her to carve out a sound all her own. Combining genuine, heartfelt lyrics with catchy, cutting guitar riffs, her songs can either touch your soul or make you want to get up and dance.  She has been described as “poppy, polished, talented, & promising,” by XPN's The Key's John Vettese. Originally hailing from Northern New Jersey, Maggie has always had music in her life. Her parents met in college and formed a bluegrass band called 'The Wild Oats,' and later performed throughout New Jersey with various traditional Irish bands. Her father instilled a love for 'all things string' from a very young age, and her mother always encouraged her to write and sing. With a Steinway Grand piano in her living room, and fiddles, penny whistles, hand drums, dulcimers, harps, mandolins, banjos, and guitars littered throughout her childhood home, Maggie has managed to pick up and write with just about any stringed instrument she can find. Growing up, she was always attending folk & bluegrass festivals, making sure she was up front for favorites like Martin Sexton, Dar Williams, Vance Gilbert, and Railroad Earth. Rock and Blues legends including Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Allman Brothers, and Bonnie Raitt were always on heavy rotation in her house. During her time attaining an Associate's Degree in Music Performance, Maggie cultivated a love and appreciation for classical, jazz, funk, world, and jam music, and deepened her knowledge of jazz and bluegrass standards. She also fell deeply in love with one-man-band greats Michael Hedges and Keller Williams, leading her to discover and navigate the world of percussive guitar and loop pedals and effects. She puts all of this together to inspire, and continuously develop, the sound she creates today. Maggie has managed to round up a talented, ever-rotating cast of characters to support her over the years, featuring some of Philly's most talented musicians. No matter which lineup is sharing the stage with her, the band always brings an impressively varied set of skills and an undeniable energy to the stage. Maggie Mae has shared bills with both local and national acts including Soulive, The Heavy Pets, Dawg Yawp, Lohai, Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats, the Ladles, and more at many of Philly and New Jersey's premiere music venues. Maggie Mae released her debut single "Can You Hear Me Now?" featuring Jake Leschinsky of Philadelphia's favorite funk band, Swift Technique, on bass in November of 2018. The band made their debut appearance at World Cafe Live on December 20th, 2018 with friends Taylor Kelly & Erik Kramer filling the bill in celebration. You can listen to "CYHMN" on Spotify and iTunes.  At the end of 2019, Maggie won a contest to open for Soulive at the Ardmore Music Hall, where they made their debut as a 10-piece band. December marked the beginning of creating their debut album, recording the first single off the album, 'Hometown,' at Rittenhouse Soundworks with Michael Cumming engineering and Robby Webb producing. 'Hometown' is available everywhere. Maggie is currently in the studio recording her next LP, which is scheduled to release in early 2023. We knew that Over The Rhine's Nowhere Else Festival was going to be something special. We've heard about the meals, the music, the songs being sung under a big tent in their wide Ohio backyard. And yes, we grew up seeing Over The Rhine play show after breathtaking show under a similar tent at the Cornerstone Festival in West Central Illinois. We knew it would be great. But we were still not prepared for just how wonderful two days of understated, organic, family-style music could be. A steady drizzle of rain couldn't come close to dampening the spirits on that rural farm, and on this episode of the podcast, we do our best to take you there.   One of the hallmarks of Nowhere Else is that Karin and Linford of Over The Rhine always assemble a treasure trove of talent to accompany them for their “musical family reunion.” This cast – often comprised of fellow Americana (and Americana-adjacent) artists they have met out on the road – play concerts, participate in writer rounds, and offer creative workshops and seminars. While some will usually be relatively familiar to fans of this kind of music – and at least one will have earned “legend” status – there will always be at least a few that are relative unknowns. Though she has been a regular at Nowhere Else in recent years, we were not familiar with soul / gospel / r&b artist and full-time “culture coach” Nikki Lerner until shortly before the festival. But after we attended her morning session, called “Finding Your Voice Through Improv,” we knew she needed to join us on the podcast. I'm sure you will find her just as brilliant, insightful, hilarious, and soulful as we have.   And Bruce has loaded up the Jukebox with records from ALL of the artists on this year's Nowhere Else lineup. In addition to Nikki, you'll hear tunes from Iris Dement, Carrie Newcomer, Hayes Carll, The Winetree, Courtney Marie Andrews, Carolina Story, John Fullbright; Wille Tea Taylor, Ben Sollee, Vance Gilbert, and of course, Over the Rhine.   If you would like to support the show, please consider joining our Patreon community or dropping us a one-time tip and check out our NEW MERCH!   For more info visit the SHOW NOTES page at TrueTunes.com/Lerner   For more info about the Nowhere Else Festival (or to order tickets for Sept '23) go to http://www.nowhereelsefestival.com/

With great excitement I welcomed singer, guitarist, songwriter, parodyist, actress, comedianne and "professional smart aleck" Carla Ulbrich. Her songs and parodies cover a wellspring of topics from current events to everyday pet peeves to aspects of humanity to pop culture references. She has nine CDs that have aired on numerous radio stations including WFUV, BBC and Dr. Demento. Since the 1990's Carla has performed in many venues and festivals. She brought the stage to life at the Falcon Ridge Festival, Eddie's Attic, The Bluebird Café and many more. Cheryl Wheeler, Vance Gilbert and The Bobs are just some of the entertainers she has opened for or split the bill with. Not a stranger to the screen, she has worked as an extra on many productions, opened for Twiggy The Waterskiing Squirrel, appeared as a musical guest on multiple TV shows including "Up All Night with Rhonda" and appeared in Sharknado 2 (as human). Not letting the pandemic slow down her creativity, she has started a live stream, collaborated with other artists via zoom and created an album addressing issues everyone can relate to. Her engaging personality, charisma, cleverness and relatability made her a magnificent podcast guest! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

We have a great conversation to distract you from the coronavirus news. Ken recorded this episode with Vance Gilbert back in February, around the release of his fantastic new record, Good Good Man. I have long been a fan of Vance’s work, and if you haven’t checked out his stuff before, the best place to start is with the song “Old White Men.” It is funny, it’ll make you cry, it is right there with the best John Prine songs. And while I readily make that comparison to the late, great John Prine, Vance is also someone very hard to pin down in a musical genre. His work draws on so many different traditions and he is irreverent enough to break all of those traditions’ rules and mores and make up his own way of communicating. And it’s special. The new record has so many gems on it and it was a great pleasure to chat with Vance. https://vancegilbert.com/

Meanwhile Kevin just started watching The Mandalorian and rewatching Ozark, when he's not distracted by old wrestling videos. (Was the appearance of the "Where's the Beef?" lady at Wrestlemania 2 the greatest moment in sports history? You know the truth.) Also, because in another timeline this is baseball season, we take a quick look at The Bad News Bears - not the movie, but the short-lived, long-forgotten TV series. It's been missing from your life for forty years, it's available on DVD for your social distancing entertainment needs, and it has all the Corey Feldman Little League action you can possibly handle.

In this previously recorded interview from 2017, I interview Vance Gilbert who burst onto the singer/songwriter scene in the early 90's when buzz started spreading in the folk clubs of Boston about an ex-multicultural arts teacher who was knocking 'em dead at open mics. Born and raised in the Philadelphia area, Vance started out hoping to be a jazz singer and then discovered his affinity for the storytelling sensibilities of acoustic folk music. Once word got out about Gilbert's stage-owning singing and playing, Shawn Colvin invited him to be special guest on her Fat City Tour. Gilbert has recorded 12 albums, toured extensively as a headliner at festivals and clubs, and has been the opener of choice for artists as varied as Aretha Franklin, Arlo Guthrie, Anita Baker and comedian George Carlin. He has also been the opener of choice for Paul Reiser and The Subdudes. In my chat with Vance Gilbert, he shares some brilliant tips including:Strategies from the great comicsHow to introduce a song on stage (Why your "intro" should only either be historical or hysterical!) andThe 2 notebook approach to songwriting!Among other things!

SUSAN WERNER has cultivated a reputation as a daring and innovative songwriter. Her new release Classics, delivers entirely new string arrangements of mainstream popular songs by top songwriters from the classic pop era - the sixties and seventies. VANCE GILBERT burst onto the music scene in the early 90's when the buzz started spreading in the folk clubs of Boston about an ex-jazz singer who was knocking 'em dead at open mics. The word spread of this Philadelphia-area born and raised performer to New York; Shawn Colvin invited Vance Gilbert to be special guest on her Fat City tour.
