An interview delving into their unique approach, being at home in a liminal space, collaborating with fellow acoustic innovator Casey Driessen, and more in this conversation from their appearance at the 2024 Earl Scruggs Music Festival. Includes music excerpts from the band's third album, Love Your Mind.
Hot off the heels of Twisted Pines' latest release, Love Your Mind, Kathleen Parks is here to dig into her uncelebrated polka origins. Daughter of renowned trumpetist Eric Parks, the younger Parks grew up in New York's Hudson Valley in a very creative family (her mother was also a dancer and the one who made Kathleen practice all the time). She started young on the violin and was surrounded by her dad's polka music, as he was a member of The Jimmy Stir's Orchestra, which my dad – also a Polka-Head – calls "the top polka band revered by all polka bands." Parks even sat in with the band as a teen, when she would occasionally fill in for their violinist. She fully embraced her strong Irish roots not only in music, but also dance, which she calls her second love. After accepting a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, she started meeting and jamming with bluegrass musicians in the area, especially at the Cantab Lounge, famous for its weekly bluegrass night. This is where her new band Twisted Pine scored a residency and started building a following. On their new record, Kathleen is the de facto lead singer, which she's just fine with. She also explains the band in one phrase: "Let's see what happens." That philosophy is definitely present on the new record, which is filled with wild vocal performances and sees the band operating at its highest level. In our Basic Folk conversation, we explore the mental health themes highlighted in the song "After Midnight (Nothing Good Happens)," which is about how difficult it can be to take care of yourself on the road. It's hard to eat healthy and exercise, it's hard to go to bed at a reasonable hour. Plus: we finally find out what time one should go to bed at fiddle camp. It's always earlier than you think.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? Reverand Al and I are especially pleased to Welcome the curators of Charm City Blue Grass. Two great entertainment guys, Adam Kirr and Phil Chorney. Fells Point Festival, check, great success this past fall and now we are in the Spring and that means Charm City Bluegrass and it's 10th Anniversary.. A bunch of musical fanatics we venture into the minds and backgrounds of these two guys and we also entertain the spirtiual aspect of the music in Bluegrass and each of our lives. We bring forward an amazing Bluegrass fact...Baltimore was the first place to mass produce Banjo's and we talk about the banjo and it's journey from Africa to the Appalacian Mountains. Full of fun conversations we also focus on this great event coming up with weekend at Union Craft Brewery starting Friday and ending after a maraton 12 hour day on Saturday Headlined by the Infamous Stringdusters it's going to be hopping. So many great acts...Twisted Pine, The Honey Dew drops, Grateful dub, Magic Beans...and many more... I have many great memories of the first few Charm City Blue Grass Events at the old Union, off of Union and this Festival keeps growing and growing. We've been to Druid Hill Park but now back at the Union Collective with a great inside and outside venue. Tons of food trucks this looks to be a real good smash up of Bluegrass fans from all over celebrating this great art and doing it in Union with nature, food, drink and fun times. It's heavenly work and these guys have it down, there's lots to learn here and Rev and I think you are really going to like it. Thanks to Adam and Phil, always good to have you in, thanks for all of the hard work and the passion for Bluegrass.

The multi talented Rachel Sumner gives us the great insights into her song writing. Rachel has gained critical acclaim and national attention for winning "The Lennon Award." Awarded as part of a contest for song writing on behalf of John Lennon by Yoko Ono Lennon and judged by the biggest names in the industry. Check her out and pre order her new incredible album today at https://rachelsumnermusic.com and make sure you follow her on all her socials! With songs as sweet and biting as the nectar and venom in her voice, Rachel Sumner has been captivating audiences throughout the northeast with her exciting new band Traveling Light. While their instrumentation and textures show roots deep in bluegrass and traditional folk music, Sumner's lyric-forward writing and penchant for snaking chord progressions demand something beyond folk conventions, highlighting the acrobatic range of her brilliant bandmates Kat Wallace (fiddle/harmonies), Ira Klein (acoustic guitar), and Mike Siegel (upright bass). Sumner is no stranger to the stage. She spent her early career on the bluegrass circuit, singing and writing with the genre-bending Boston group Twisted Pine. Since setting out on her own, Sumner's songs have been critically acclaimed, winning the Lennon Award in the folk category of the 2021 John Lennon Songwriting Contest for her song "Radium Girls (Curie Eleison);" earning her a spot in the Kerrville New Folk Competition; and being chosen two consecutive years by WBUR/NPR as one of the top Massachusetts entries in the Tiny Desk Competition. Originally a classical flutist from the dusty Mojave desert, Sumner relocated from California to Boston a decade ago intending to study Composition and Film Scoring at Berklee College of Music. While at school, she found herself in the orbit of roots musicians like Molly Tuttle, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, and John Mailander who introduced her to a trove of traditional music, started her off with a few chords on the guitar, and encouraged her to write her own songs. In the short time since, Rachel has become one of the most vital voices in Boston's thriving roots music scene. Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light will release their debut LP in the summer of 2022. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/musiciansandbeyond/support

Many businesses felt the shock of COVID19, and more of these couldn't survive. So what does it take for a business to survive and thrive past a pandemic setback? Stephen Jaye answers these questions and more as he talks to Aaron Uhl, founder and owner of Uhl's Brewing Company in Boulder, Colorado. Aaron walks us through how he got into brewing, what he learned, and how he helped pilot his business through the COVID19 crisis. Learn more about Aaron and his experiences by tuning in. --- Listen to the podcast here: Steering A Business Through A Pandemic Setback With Aaron Uhl Colorado has been my home for years. For anyone who knows what it's like here, it is longer than most people. There are a lot more new entries and a lot of people are moving here. The area of Colorado, especially the Front Range, Denver, Boulder, and Fort Collins, is known for the craft brewing scene. We have a pretty robust scene in that particular sense of one of 5 or 6 places where there is a lot of people doing a lot of experimenting with different types of beer and formulas. My guest is Aaron Uhl, who started his own brewery. He is the owner and head brewer along with 6 or 7 other roles. We talked a little bit about the idea of wearing many hats with Uhl's Brewing, for anyone interested is located near the corner of Arapahoe and 55th on the East end of Boulder.--Aaron, welcome to the show. Thank you for having me. Tell me a little bit about Uhl's Brewing, your story, and what you are all about. It all started with a passion for homebrewing, competitions, and loving craft beer, in general. When I first started brewing, it was simply because I couldn't get a certain beer from beer trading because beer trading was a big thing back in early 2010 and on. With that, I whined a little bit. My girlfriend bought me the book that everyone gets, The Complete Joy of Homebrewing by Charlie Papazian. That nudged me along to do my first brew with a friend who had an all-grain system. He showed me the ropes on the first brew. After that, I was at home homebrewing. There was a tile in the kitchen that was available on my side of the table. There was going to be a fermenter there. By the end of the first year, I had the beer that I couldn't trade for a mimic of it, an Imperial stout aging in a five-gallon bourbon barrel in my basement. That was in 2012 or so. Fast forward to 2018, I won a lot of awards at different competitions across the state and region. I ended up winning regional gold medals for an Imperial stout and Imperial IPA with AHA competition that gets run annually. That's the best of the show for me of all things, also a trip to the Great American Beer Festival with Jeff Griffith from FATE Brewing at the time, who is now at Twisted Pine. The eventful night led me to sign a contract with another brewery to start the brand in 2018 of February at the Fresh Hop Competition. I ended up winning about 5 or 6 awards and then took best to show. The funny thing was people that I would assume to talk with dropped a tank into their system and started brewing. They showed up to the brewery where the competition was having its final rounds of judging and award ceremony. They were like, “What are you doing here? We are honestly not to ask you. You own a brewery.” They live in the area and wanted to check it out. I told them that I had about eight different beers in the competition and they should sit down at the pro-am table, hang out for the award ceremony, and try the brewery's beers that they were at. They sat down and their eyes were raising every single time I won an award because when I talked to them, that's what I wanted to start doing, brewing one and done recipes and easy IPAs. They are like, “Everyone thinks they can do that, but can you brew anything else other than that?” It landed in their head that, “If this guy is winning medals across broad spectrums from lager to British bitters to smash American sours,

Episode 186: Formed as a showcase for women in string band music in 2009, Della Mae has seen lineup changes but no drift in its mission to create a new bluegrass and neo-folk sound full of ideas and heart. This episode, founding member Kimber Ludiker and decade-long vocalist Celia Woodsmith tell the story of how the band worked together at a distance during 2020 and then came together in a cathartic run of sessions that became the new Family Reunion. Chuck had a solo conversation with the great New England band Twisted Pine. He sat with fiddle player Kathleen Parks, mandolin player Dan Bui and bassist Chris Sartori not too long ago. We missed Twisted Pine's newest addition, Anh Phung, who plays flute in the band, but she is safe at home in beautiful Canada. But we did get to talk about her behind her back - all nice things of course. Twisted Pine is one of the most acclaimed young string bands in the Northeast. These fine musicians bring their love of improvisation, rhythmic playing and even humor into their music that, while still rooted in bluegrass, bring in notes of pop, funk and jazz that, in addition to fantastic harmonies, make them unique. Their most recent album Right Now is a must listen, and although they had to put off touring due to COVID, they have plenty of material for you to watch on their website at twistedpineband.com and I highly recommend you do because their videos are fantastic.
Members of the eclectic folk/bluegrass/jazz ensemble Twisted Pine joined us from their separate pandemic locations to chat about their new album called Right Now, and how their sound has evolved from traditional bluegrass to the territory they currently occupy.

It’s hard to think of a band that has come out of New England recently that has shapeshifted and evolved more than Twisted Pine. The group has seen some personnel changes recently but, from its founding, seemed dedicated to pursuing new sonic territory, pulling more and more listeners in with each note. The group releases their latest record, “Right Now” on August 14 and it is a phenomenal piece of art. The instrumentation is nothing short of virtuosic...but not the sort of virtuosity that you have to pretend to enjoy! It was really fun to get to chat with Dan, Ahn, Chris, and Kathleen over zoom about a month ago. And it’s been just as much fun to spin “Right Now.” I’m so excited for you all to hear it. I hope you enjoy this edition of the Red Line Roots podcast! Photo Credit: Joanna Chattman

I have met my tangenting match. I went into this interview, backstage at the legendary Club Passim in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with a slate of questions for Steve Poltz, about his new album Shine On, about writing “You Were Meant For Me” with Jewel, about humor in music. I probably could have gotten a good hour with Steve with two or three questions. There is no telling where his mind might flash next. Just in terms of music, the conversation covered his early days with The Rugburns, Nirvana and 90s “goat music,” the Replacements, the Dead Milkmen, Mojo Nixon, Tom Lehrer, and Allan Sherman over the course of a few minutes. We talked about spirituality, Risky Business, Hyman Roth from Godfather II, Jesus, Marianne Williamson, Styx in another five-minute section. At one point, when I told Poltz the name of the podcast, he said, “We're living up to the name.” This breakneck tangenting is something you have experienced if you've seen Poltz onstage. I hadn't seen him play since he did an in-the-round show with Beaver Nelson, “Scrappy” Jud Newcomb, and Adam Carroll perhaps seventeen or eighteen years before. I certainly hadn't remembered this version of him. When he smiles, it splits his face almost completely, and he smiles a lot when he's not singing. He also jigs, which makes him seem like a Muppet version of Jimmie Dale Gilmore. The first several minutes onstage, he told stories, picked up his guitar and put it back down again, and threatened not to pick it up the rest of the show. It'll be there, he said, the audience would see it, but maybe he wouldn't use it. He played the Grateful Dead's “Althea” off the top of his head, which surprised even him. He apologized for the bad notes, but backtracked, saying, “Think of how many bad notes the Dead hit.” The new album is called Shine On, and you can find more info about that and Poltz on www.poltz.com, and find him on Facebook and Twitter under Steve Poltz. You can also find more about Club Passim at www.passim.org. And if you're intrigued by some of the music you heard in the background, that's Boston singer/songwriter Rachel Sumner, formerly of Twisted Pine, and you can find her stuff at www.rachelsumnermusic.com. I am currently putting together this year's Daily Horror Film Fest, for which I post a different short horror film every day in October. If you are a short horror filmmaker, or even if you just have a short horror film you love dearly, e-mail your suggestions to nick@nickzaino.com. And now for something completely different. Or maybe not. This week's featured track is "Comfort" from Secret Shame of Asheville, North Carolina, from their new album, out today, September 5th, called Dark Synmthetic. This new album would have sounded great in nestled somewhere in your collection with the Pixies, The Cure, and Nirvana. It's propulsive guitar rock, mixing glassy chorus and echo with heavy, distorted riffs to create this wide-open sound. From somewhere within that sound, singer Lena is trying to reach you through waves of reverb. Seven songs come in just under twenty-six minutes total. Not a note wasted. The band is kicking off a tour this week, and you can find them on BandCamp and Facebook to find out more.

On this week’s Open Mic Spotlight podcast, Heather talks with Boston-based bluegrass-pop band Twisted Pine about how they first met, their experiences within the bluegrass scene in Boston and why they’ve adopted a response of “four separate beds here” where it comes to questions about their personal relationships. The band started out hewing closer to their bluegrass roots, but over time, they broadened their approach, incorporating more indie pop hooks and rhythms into their string band sound. Built around some truly remarkable harmonies and luminous acoustic arrangements, their music is light on its feet but never lightweight, a rustic exploration of tone and texture that forgoes the usual genre limitations to become something utterly compelling and distinct. The band first came together while they were attending different colleges in the Boston area and finding themselves playing alongside like-minded musicians at The Cantab Lounge in Cambridge. They released their self-titled debut record last year and have spent the intervening months touring in support. They perform two covers, including The Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and The Cranberries’ “Dreams, finding nuance and fresh sounds buried in these familiar hits. They discuss how their songwriter process begins with a 50/50 split between Kathleen Parks and Rachel Sumner, and then they bring the skeleton of each song to the rest of the band to complete its creation. And they reveal that it’s in this final collaborative undertaking that the song expresses the resolve of the entire band. Due to some recording complications, this specific podcast is built from two different sound sources: a live recording taken from their concert at the Tomorrow Building in Chattanooga, TN and audio from the original Open Mic Spotlight interview that the band was streaming on their Facebook page.

Boston's Twisted Pine came together at the famed Tuesday Night Bluegrass jams at the Cantab Lounge in Cambridge, Massachusettes, while in school at the Berklee College of Music. After honing their traditional bluegrass chops there for two years, they started to write original material. This opened the door to incorporating their diverse musical influences and backgrounds that range from classical to indie-songwriters to jazz and funk to Celtic. What results is a fresh progressive "pop-grass" string band sound like none other. Twisted Pine (Rachel Sumner - guitar, vocals; Kathleen Parks - fiddle, vocals; Dan Bui - mandolin; Chris Sartori - bass) stopped by for a Folk Alley Session at Beehive Productions studio in Saranac Lake, NY in August, 2017 to play songs from their Signature Sounds, self-titled debut album.

You can pick up the game on iOs or Android devices. Visit the Twisted Pine Brewing Company website to see where to get your hands on this brew. Check our Facebook page for updates, along with our Twitter and Instagram. We also have an UnTappd account where you can see what we're drinking; and you can catch us on iTunes for your listening pleasure.
