Roy Forbes, Holger Peterson, The Bros. Landreth and AV and the Inner City. All of the interviews were done backstage at the Vancouver Island Music Festival of several weeks ago. In Courtney. Thank you, Doug Cox and Team. Talking to Roy about performing his Thistles album after all those years, to Holger about some of the highlights of his years coming to the festival and interviewing Roy for the audience. The Bros  Landreth tells the tale of travelling to the Byron Bay Blues Fest in Australia to finally play with Bonnie Raitt. There was just one thing they wanted to do before that...go swimming in the surf. Things went sideways. Ann Vriend and her Inner City Choir introduced themselves and their second jobs and left us with a song. Holger was hosting and doing interviews. The Bros. Landreth was playing various side stages and headlining Sunday Rocking Roy was playing his Thistles album from his "Bim" Days. with a great band Ann Vriend and Inner City, after a chat,  left us with a cappella gospel song.

Welcome to the Long Weekend Edition of the Mulligan Stew Podcast... And because it's a long weekend, we have a longer podcast – two of them actually. Starting things off is the birthday boy Bruce Allen – One of Canada's most successful talent managers EVER!! Bruce and his world-class team are responsible for planning,  leading and supporting the careers of Bryan Adams, Michael Buble, Bob Rock, Jann Arden and The Offspring. When you get the attention of Bruce all bets are off. You can fire questions off in every direction. The thing is you have to be prepared to have the answers smack you upside the HEAD. I wanted Bruce's thoughts on the loss of our mutual friend Red Robinson – The Last DJ.  And the loss of Gordon Lightfoot as well. Then we talked about the state of today's music business. Like throwing a steak to a pit bull. Bruce then launches into an update on the 2023 years of Offspring,  Jann, Bryan, Michael and Bob Rock. Rock has released an album with the late Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip. It's amazing. Bruce has that story as well.. Happy Birthday Happy Bruce!! Bob Rock interview to follow soon.   The second interview is with Doug Cox, the artistic director of the Vancouver Island Music Festival. July 14-16  in Courtney/Comox. Every year I'm fascinated by Doug's artist lineups. This year the headliners are Sarah McLachlan, Rickie Lee Jones and The Bros. Landreth. He asked Roy Forbes to return to his BIM character and revisit the tracks from his Thistles Album. Two legends. Dave Alvin and Jimmy Dale Gilmore with The Guilty Ones. Here's Doug  Cox with backgrounds on all those artists and more.   NEXT WEEK – The Artistic Directors of Folk Festivals in Calgary, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Canmore. PLUS Terry Wickham reveals his lineup for Edmonton Folk Fest.   Have a memorable weekend - tdm

The Minister of Public Safety has announced new penalties to try to curb price gouging of medical and other supplies needed for the COVID-19 pandemic. Police, as well as bylaw and provincial enforcement officers now have the power to levy $2,000 dollar fines for price-gouging or for reselling essential goods. Mike Farnworth says Consumer Protection BC has received 800 complaints on the subject. They include business owners paying 10 times the normal price for N95 masks to protect their workers to concerns over keeping shelves stocked because of hoarding. The newly empowered officers can also levy fines to anyone not obeying quarantine orders. Farnworth says most travellers have self-isolation plans. However, 110 people without plans have been ordered to quarantine in government-designated hotel rooms. The Minister says the officers will not be fining anyone for not practising safe physical distancing. He says any such order would have to come from the Provincial Health Officer. Dr. Bonnie Henry has said she does not support that kind of crackdown because most people are doing the right thing. However, Dr. Henry says large events like the Pacific National Exhibition or Gay Pride Parades will be forbidden this year. But she has not ruled out the prospect of some small gatherings being permitted during the summer months. The news has forced the cancellation of the Vancouver Island Music Fest. Its executive-director Doug Cox says details about ticket refunds will be announced soon. During her regular briefing on Saturday, Henry announced three more deaths from COVID-19, totalling 81 in BC. There were 29 new cases of the virus reported from Friday to Saturday, three of them are in the Island Health region. BC's total COVID cases stand at 1647. New numbers will be released later this afternoon.Written and reported by Lisa Cordasco. Senior Reporter and News Director for CHLY 101.7FM.Have a tip? MILKDRIVE is an Alt-folk-progressive acoustic string band that is generating quite a buzz in the Austin music scene. The band features several award winning musicians. Dennis Ludiker, who has toured with Asleep at the Wheel, won the 2009 RockyGrass Mandolin Contest and holds titles as the 2010 World Fiddle Champion, 2009 and 2008 Texas State-Fiddlers Frolics and 2002 Walnut Valley Music Festival Winner. Brian Beken was 2004 Texas Flatpick Guitar Champion. Noah Jeffries won a Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival Jazz Guitar Competition. With the addition of bass player Matt Mefford, who was in South Austin Jug Band with Ludiker and Beken, the band was complete and became MilkDrive two years ago. The band has put the finishing touches on its debut studio album, ROAD FROM HOME. BETTYSOO & DOUG COX might seem an unlikely pair. One hails from songwriter's heaven in Austin, Texas, the other from the paradisaical reaches of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The two musicians met while teaching at Acoustic Alaska Guitar Camp, where they discovered a shared fondness for good songs. They decided to create a project built around the stories and work of their mostly-unsung heroes. With two voices, a guitar and a Dobro, their CD "Across the Borderline" gathers different places and sounds: low and high, north and south, hope and heartbreak.
