Reversing Climate Change
S2E18: The conservative answer to the Green New Deal—w/ Quillan Robinson, American Conservation Coalition

Young people on BOTH sides of the aisle want to see action on climate change. And Quillan Robinson believes that the will for action is a more powerful force than the disagreements we may have over policy. So, how does a conservative approach like the American Climate Contract differ from the progressive Green New Deal? And how do the principles of conservatism inform right-of-center climate solutions? Quill is the Vice President of Government Affairs with the American Conservation Coalition, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering young conservatives to reengage in environmental conversations. Today, Quill joins Ross to explain how his involvement in the I-732 campaign in Washington shaped his thinking and shifted his politics. He introduces us to the conservative thinkers who inspire him, walking us through the best principles of the conservative intellectual tradition and how they apply to climate policy. Quill goes on to discuss why oikophilia (love of place) is not exclusive to rural contexts and offer his take on Hamiltonian versus Jeffersonian economic models. Listen in for Quill’s insight on the three main approaches to climate policy at work in DC and learn what differentiates ACC’s American Climate Contract from the other federal climate policy solutions. How is today’s brand of conservatism different from past presidencies? In this episode, Julian Zelizer discusses the ins and outs of conservatism today, particularly compared with that during the Ronald Reagan presidency, with economist Arthur Brooks. Brooks elaborates on his own unlikely path to becoming a leading conservative thinker and expresses his firm belief that, because of the unique history of the United States, nearly all Americans are progressive, regardless of their party identification. He also takes an historic look at the conservative movement, noting, for example, that while many of Trump’s views are in opposition to those of Reagan, they are very much in line with the conservatism of President William Taft. Brooks is currently the president of the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C., and also author of numerous books including ā€œThe Conservative Heart: How to Build a Fairer, Happier, and More Prosperous America.ā€ He also writes comments in several media outlets including The New York Times.

A Must Read Book for Conservatives On this episode of the TalkGOP podcast I review the book "The Conservative Heart" by Arthur Brooks of the American Enterprise Institute. Conservatives have been slandered by the liberals as uncaring and it's working. Ā Too many Americans believe Republicans are greedy, heartless rich people who don't care about their fellow citizens. In his book, Arthur Brooks presents a plan to persuade Americans that the conservative approach is best, including: How the author transformed from a typical liberal musician to a conservative economist. Success of free markets raising people out poverty worldwide Why the pursuit of happiness is more important than the pursuit of money Seeing people as assets, not liabilities. The importance and blessings of meaningful work Why values matter most in lifting people out of poverty The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Conservatives Let me ask you a simple question. Ā Are you content to just talk about our problems or do you want to make a difference? Ā "The Conservative Heart" is written to improve your skills of persuasion for conservative solutions.
