Richie is joined by Anjem Choudary and Kevin Barrett.Social affairs adviser Dame Sara Khan has criticised the government for failing to intervene after protesters caused Cineworld to cancel all UK screenings of a film about the Prophet Mohammed's daughter. Cineworld said it had pulled The Lady of Heaven “to ensure the safety of our staff and customers”. More than 120,000 people signed a petition opposing its screening, while the Bolton Council of Mosques called the film “blasphemous”. To discuss this, Richie is joined by the Islamic scholar and former solicitor Anjem Choudary. Robert F. Kennedy's friend Paul Schrade wants US authorities to reopen the investigation into his assassination. Schrade was injured on the night that Sirhan Sirhan allegedly murdered the Presidential candidate. Academic, writer and broadcaster Kevin Barrett joins Richie to discuss this and to share his own theory as to who killed RFK and why. https://substack.com/profile/18936398-kevin-barrett
In June 1968, US presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy was assassinated shortly after addressing his supporters at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. It was less than five years after his older brother, President John F Kennedy, had also been assassinated. Sirhan Sirhan was convicted of the crime, but many - including Kennedy's friend Paul Schrade - suspect another gunman was involved. Schrade was shot himself that night and he told Rebecca Kesby about why he's campaigning for the case to be reopened. Known for his community organizing, civil rights activist Paul Schrade successfully helped lead the anti-war movement and worked closely with the farmworkers union. He served as an aide in Sen. Robert F. Kennedy's bid for the presidential nomination, joining Kennedy on the campaign trail and introducing him to the many workers unions on the West Coast. As one of the last living witnesses to Kennedy's assassination in 1968, Schrade says it not only changed his life forever, but it also changed the course of American history. Now in his 90s, Schrade is still dedicated to honoring Kennedy's legacy, securing the funding to build the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools in Koreatown, where the Ambassador Hotel once stood.
Governor Gavin Newsom has three weeks to decide if he will sign off on a parole panel's recommendation to release 77-year-old Sirhan Sirhan, the man who has spent over half a century in federal prison after being convicted for the killing of Senator Robert F Kennedy in 1968. This story is proving itself to be a case study on the question of mainstream Democrats actually practicing what they preach. By all legal and personal accounts, Sirhan has proven himself rehabilitated, and is ready to spend his final years with his brother in California. Indeed, two of RFK's sons--as well as Paul Schrade, an old friend of the late senator and the last surviving victim from the shooting 53 years ago--agree with the parole panel's ruling. But others do not, such as Kerry Kennedy, who is both RFK's daughter and the president of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights. While her nonprofit insists it is against mass incarceration, Kerry doesn't seem to think that principle applies to at least one septuagenarian. Last month the Sacramento Bee published an opinion piece by Kerry, in which she leveled demonstrably false claims against Sirhan's parole. Today we're joined by three remarkable women who know this case front to back, in order to set the record straight on Sirhan's recommendation for parole, before it's too late: Angela Berry, Sirhan Sirhan's attorney Denise Bohdan, documentarian/attorney who has covered this case extensively Jen Abreu, executive director of Redemption Row California (and friend of the show) Want to ask Governor Gavin Newsom to do what's right and sign off on the parole recommendation? Sirhan Sirhan Schrade Dusek The Donald Jeffries Show 9-1-2021 Paul Schrade and Laurie Dusek Sirhan Sirhan Schrade Dusek Paul Schrade: Paul Schrade was president of United Auto Workers Local 887 during the strike of 16,000 workers in 1953. Major gains in wages and benefits were won for the first time for all aerospace workers paid far less than autoworkers in the same union. He then served four years as United Auto Workers President Walter Reuther's administrative assistant in Detroit. He was elected UAW's Western states director in the 1960s, and in 1965 he joined with Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta in the farmworkers struggle. He helped arrange for Robert Kennedy's two visits to Delano to support the farmworkers. He initiated the formation of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC) and the East Los Angeles Community Union (TELACU in 1965. He marched with Dr. Martin Luther King in Selma and Los Angeles and with Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. He joined the anti-war movement and the UAW provided draft counseling for union members and their sons. In 1975, as one of the shooting victims, he filed lawsuits with a team of lawyers and Kennedy supporters to re-open the investigation of the fatal shooting of Robert Kennedy in the Ambassador Hotel. They confirmed that a second gunman was involved. At 96, Schrade is actually a year older than RFK would be if he were still alive. He maintains an active interest in the case. Laurie Dusek: Laurie Dusek was Sirhan Sirhan's attorney for thirteen years. Like Paul Schrade, she has worked with Kennedy family members and remains committed to Sirhan's release. Lowenstein was critical of the official account of the June 6, 1968, assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy. Lowenstein made a one-hour appearance on the PBS television show Firing Line in 1975, where he was interviewed by William F. Buckley Jr., in which he stated that he did not believe that Sirhan Sirhan alone had shot Kennedy, Schrade and the four others who were injured in the shooting are often overlooked players in the assassination that killed Kennedy at the age of 42 amid his ascendant presidential campaign. When Schrade gained consciousness at a nearby hospital, a United Automobile Workers leader came to his bedside and told him the news: Kennedy was dead. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/art-mcdermott/support

Paul Schrade stood at Robert F. Kennedy’s side at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, 51 years ago last week. As they entered the kitchen, Schrade was shot along with the presidential candidate. Schrade recovered from his injuries. Now 94 years old, his memories of that tragic night are still vivid. He shared his recollections of Kennedy and the candidate's time in the Central Valley, and of Schrade's own work for the United Auto Workers in California.

A new Netflix 4-part series, "Bobby Kennedy for President", devoted significant time to Paul Schrade's fight to find the second gunman that shot Robert Kennedy in the back of the head, after Sirhan Sirhan missed Kennedy entirely. Today, RFK Jr. is calling for a new investigation and he has the support of his older sister, Maryland's former Lt. Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.
Many people doubt the official story of what happened when Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated in the kitchen of the Los Angeles's Ambassador Hotel exactly 50 years ago. Their doubts are fuelled by painstaking research, solid reporting, and even cutting-edge science. But nothing compares to talking with people who were there when Kennedy was struck down. Paul Schrade, a long-time friend and political ally of Kennedy's, was shot in the head that night, but he recovered from his wounds. Two years ago, when Schrade was 91, WhoWhatWhy's Jeff Schechtman spoke to him about Kennedy, the assassination, and about his theory of the case. This 48-minute conversation offers indispensable insights into the life and legacy of Bobby Kennedy, his murder, and how that tragedy changed history.
Why did Bobby Kennedy leave such a lasting impression on US politics and society? Revered equally across the political spectrum today, his rise to prominence was controversial. He became Attorney General at just 35 and gained a reputation as a tough operator during his brother JFK's time in the White House. But when he was gunned down in 1968, America was riven by racial and class division as well as doubts over the country's involvement in the Vietnam War. Senator Robert Kennedy came to embody the hopes and dreams of a generation seeking a fairer and more peaceful country. Fifty years after becoming the target of an assassin in the Ambassador's Hotel in Los Angeles, Stephen Sackur speaks to some of the people whose lives were changed forever that day. Close aide Paul Schrade, who was himself hit in the skull by one of the assassin's bullets and Vincent Di Pierro who found himself covered in the senator's blood as he slumped to the ground give the closest accounts of RFK's final moments. Others painting a picture of Kennedy, the man include Peter Edleman, the policy director for his presidential campaign and speechwriters Adam Walinsky and Jeff Greenfield. Meanwhile RFK's daughter Kerry Kennedy who was eight when her father died, gives us a rare insight into their home life and his role as a husband and father Legendary British interviewer David Frost (famed for his interrogation of Richard Nixon after Watergate) talks about the impact RFK had on him. And contributors speculate if another Kennedy may soon run for the White House with all eyes on RFK's charismatic grandson, congressman Joe Kennedy who represents Massachusetts.
