Exciting things are happening: Colleen's new book is about to hit the shelves. The title of the latest in the series? Stuff Dutch People Hate! In this book, Colleen flips the script and asks: “What really pisses the Dutch off?” Because, as she argues, what a culture hates can reveal even more than what it loves.Allard wants to know how the book came about, does he agree with what is written, and can he guess the (long!) list of what the Dutch despise? Tune in to find out!

“'U interesseert me niet.' Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well

Have you ever found yourself holding onto feelings of guilt or shame long after a difficult experience or mistake? In this episode, Jill sits down with Dr. Carolyn Allard, a leading voice in trauma-focused psychology and research. Together, they unpack the complex nature of guilt and shame, especially when these emotions become non-adaptive in the face of trauma or hardship. Carolyn, who is also the author of Transform Your Guilt and Shame: Evidence-Based Strategies to Heal from Trauma and Adversity, shares how to recognize the difference between guilt and shame and introduces the idea of “non-adaptive guilt and shame” (NAGS). You'll gain insight into how these emotions link to moral injury and other trauma responses, and walk away with actionable tools such as hindsight bias and justification analysis to better understand, challenge, and manage them.Listen and Learn: How guilt and shame differ lies in focus, as guilt is about actions and shame is about identity, and why they matterHow moral injury can emerge from situations where individuals face impossible choices that conflict with their values, leading to lasting feelings of guilt and shameWhy we feel non-adaptive guilt and shame often comes down to distorted beliefs about responsibility, justification, and values, and how understanding these patterns helps us break free from self-blame and move toward self-compassionHow hindsight bias can trick us into unfair self-judgment, and by reflecting on our choices and context at the time, we can gain a clearer, kinder perspectiveUnderstanding the difference between accountability (being answerable) and responsibility (having control or intention) and how this helps us untangle guilt and shame, process mistakes effectively, and break the self-reinforcing cycles of trauma that impair our ability to act according to our valuesResources: Transform Your Guilt and Shame: Evidence-Based Strategies to Heal from Trauma and Adversity: https://bookshop.org/a/30734/9781433843419 Carolyn's Website: https://www.carolynallardphd.com/Connect with Carolyn on Social Media: Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/carolynallardphd.bsky.social Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/p/Carolyn-Allard-PhD LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/carolyn-allard-99749155/About Carolyn B. L'exposition met en lumière la force d'invention et la puissance expressive de la peinture de Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), plus chargée de sensations que ce que l'imposante rigueur de ses tableaux laisse penser.L'exposition, qui embrasse la longue carrière d'un artiste ayant connu six régimes politiques et participé activement à la Révolution, réunit une centaine de prêts exceptionnels, dont l'imposant fragment du Serment du Jeu de Paume (dépôt du musée du Louvre au château de Versailles) et la version originale du célèbre Marat assassiné (Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Bruxelles), sommet de son art. Lees- en luistertips:The Politics of Time van Guy Standing. De Sabbat van Abraham Heschel.Sabbath as Resistance van Walter Brueggemann. The Three Dimensions of a Complete Life van Martin Luther King.

Brentford's transfer deadline day felt more like a pantomime than a football negotiation – complete with the chorus of “oh yes he will, oh no he won't” surrounding Yoane Wissa's future. After days of speculation and a storm sparked by the forward's Instagram statement, the deal finally closed with Newcastle United for a package of £55m, some £30m more than their first offer for the Bees' striker. As one national outlet put it, “Brentford's refusal to buckle early forced Newcastle to pay full price.” Reiss Nelson also arrived on loan from Arsenal. Dave 'Laney' Lane and Matt 'The Allard' Allard got together to talk about the dramatic last day of the transfer window and how it leaves Brentford. Hosted on Acast. Well, that escalated quickly. Losing Christian Nørgaard to Arsenal certainly felt like the end of an era for Brentford fans – one of the last remaining leaders from the squad that brought us up and kept us steady in the Premier League. Christian wasn't flashy, but he was always reliable. Sure, his legs didn't quite have 90 minutes in them twice a week anymore, but when he played, he made us tick. Defensive intelligence, cool under pressure, one of Thomas Frank's most trusted lieutenants. So when word came on Friday morning that Jordan Henderson was set to replace him – on a free transfer, no less – our first reaction was: Seriously? But then, as the dust settled, the logic is clear. Maybe not the romance. Maybe with the Saudi flip-flopping fresh in our minds. But the logic.Dave 'Laney' Lane and Matt 'The Allard' Allard rocked up to a pub in Marble Hill, with Billy The Bee chipping in from the virtual boozer to chew the fat on all things Bees in what is proving to be another eventful week.As well as saying goodbye and than-you to Christian, we welcome Antoni Milambo from Feyenoord, plus the ongoing Bryan Mbuemo to Manchester United saga.. whilst Forest are supposedly sniffing around Wisa again but can't afford him.Enjoy Hosted on Acast. If you caught our first conversation (EP 126: A Story of Healing with Alan Allard), you know how much insight Alan brings — and this time, we dive even deeper into what it really takes to rebuild your life, your beliefs, and your sense of self after high-control religion. We talk about everything from the danger of certainty, to how toxic beliefs can trap us in shame and self-doubt long after we leave the system. Alan also shares the three core keys he believes are essential for moving from surviving to truly thriving — and why real healing isn't about finding the "right" answers, but about learning how to trust yourself again. Alan Allard is a former psychotherapist and an expert in happiness, human performance, and how to empower agency and well-being after trauma, abuse, and adversity. He works with individuals, couples, churches, and organizations who want to thrive. To find out more about Alan's work and get his contact information, visit: www.alanallard.com Whether you're just starting your journey or you've been walking it for a while, I hope this conversation encourages you to keep going — and reminds you: you're not broken. If you are a member, were a member, or know someone who was a member of the ICOC or ICC and would like to share your story about life in and out of the church, I'd love to hear from you. Together, we can keep exploring the question, “We were in a cult?” — and maybe find a little more healing along the way. Runner-up for the 2017-18 AHGBI-Spanish Embassy Publication Prize Spanish National Identity, Colonial Power, and the Portrayal of Muslims and Jews During the Rif War (1909-27) (Boydell & Brewer, 2021), examines how anxieties about colonial power and national identity are reflected in Spanish literature, journalism, and photography of Moroccan Muslim and Jewish cultures during the Spanish colonisation of Northern Morocco from 1909 to 1927. This understudied period, known as the Rif War, is highly significant because of its role in shaping the identities that came into conflict in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39).

In this 248th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this week's episode, we begin and end by geeking out on biology: why there tend to be so many molecules in organisms that humans find useful (see: turmeric and ginger), why you can't be both the fastest and the most agile anything, and new research that finds that some Atlantic fish with leg-like appendages can taste the ground with those “legs.” In between all that: an analysis of American political parties—where they've been, where they are now, and what might happen next. Also: self-indulgent whining from the Southern hemisphere.*****Our sponsors:CrowdHealth: Pay for healthcare with crowdfunding instead of insurance. It's way better.
