Joining host Michael Azevedo on this episode is writer/director Gene Tempest. Gene's latest documentary is “Mr. Polaroid” and it will debut on PBS as part of the American Experience series on May 19. Following its broadcast premiere, the film will be available via the PBS app and on the American Experience YouTube channel. The film profiles Edwin Land, a pioneering tech disruptor and Inventor of the mid-century icon that transformed photography.   Long before the iPhone, another inventive device allowed everyone to instantly chronicle their lives — the Polaroid camera. The product, and the company's unique culture, would launch not only instant photography mania but also become the model for today's Silicon Valley tech culture.    "Mr. Polaroid" tells the little-known story of the man behind the camera, a Harvard dropout named Edwin Land. Over a half century ago, before the smartphone, Land was dreaming up “a camera that you would use as often as your pencil or your eyeglasses.” He would also come to believe his company was “on its way to lead the world — perhaps even to save it.” Hubris, technology, brilliance, and a billion photographs a year are all part of the rollicking Polaroid story.   Making Media Now is sponsored by Filmmakers Collaborative, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting media makers from across the creative spectrum. The University of Michigan Museum of Art is hosting a new exhibit by photographer Jarod Lew. In, Strange You Never Knew, Lew delves into the complexities of knowing one's true identity, focusing on the Asian American diaspora in the Midwest. In his photographs, Lew has his subjects looking directly at the camera. He explains that this creative choice is intended to establish a tension between the subjects and the viewer. By capturing images in Asian American homes, he creates a sense of tension that arises from viewing these private interior spaces and the experiences of the subjects. In his series, In Between You and Your Shadow, Lew explores what tomorrow holds for his subjects. In his photographs, he captures his mother’s history through gestures and memorabilia from her past. Lew's mother was engaged to Detroiter Vincent Chin, a young Chinese American engineer who was beaten to death by two white men, at a time when anti-Asian racism was widespread in Michigan. Chin’s death was a touchstone for Asian American political activism, but for Jarod Lew’s family, it was a secret he only discovered as a young adult. He includes images of his family in the show, and while his mother is also photographed, her face is never visable. "For me this work speaks to my mom's right for opacity. My mom's right not to be associated with this history, because it's her decision to not want to be a part of this history," Lew said. This image, which went viral and earned international recognition, sparked a tradition that has become a hallmark of American sports culture. The conversation delves into the intricate process of capturing these breathtaking moments, blending the precision of military aviation with the pageantry of college football. Holtzman describes the challenges of coordinating with Air Force pilots, navigating complex airspace, and timing his shots to perfection. Throughout the episode, the veteran and civilian find common ground in their appreciation for these uniquely American experiences. They discuss the significance of the Rose Bowl as “The Granddaddy of Them All,” the pride of university marching bands performing intricate formations, and the awe-inspiring sight of a stealth bomber soaring over a sea of cheering fans. Her efforts culminated in President Abraham Lincoln's 1863 proclamation, which set the last Thursday in November as a day for national thanksgiving. Learn that the idea of gratitude and giving thanks is an ancient concept for mankind and expressly elevated in the Bible. Review how days of thanksgiving were originally commemorated in the English colonies in Virginia and Massachusetts, with the English dissenters, the Pilgrims, having the most influential celebrations. In the colonial era, Thanksgiving celebrations were centered on particular events and circumstances, and, accordingly, happened at different times. As Americans united against British tyranny, they made continental wide proclamations through the Continental Congress, but again tied to specific events and times. President George Washington issued the first two Thanksgiving Proclamations under the Constitution, and John Adams and James Madison did the same. Thomas Jefferson refused, and after James Madison, Thanksgiving was proclaimed by the States, but not by the President, until Abraham Lincoln. Welcome to a special episode of the Following Films podcast! I'm your host, and today we're diving deep into one of the most powerful and often overlooked chapters of American history: the 1898 Wilmington Massacre. I'm thrilled to be joined by two award-winning filmmakers, Brad Lichtenstein and Yoruba Richen, to discuss their documentary American Coup: Wilmington 1898. This poignant and timely film, airing on PBS's AMERICAN EXPERIENCE on November 12, 2024, sheds light on the deadly race massacre and insurrection that reshaped North Carolina's largest city, and whose echoes still reverberate today. In our conversation, Brad and Yoruba will take us through the layers of this devastating chapter in American history, from a thriving Black community in Wilmington post-Reconstruction, to the violent white supremacist coup that led to mass murder, exile, and a legacy of trauma. The documentary draws on powerful storytelling and firsthand accounts from the descendants of those who lived through it—offering a compelling exploration of race, power, and resilience. This film invites us not only to reflect on the past but also to grapple with the ongoing dialogues about race and justice that continue to shape our nation today. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/followingfilms/support

The release of the country album “Cowboy Carter” by Beyoncé this spring caused some surprising controversy.  Some complained Beyoncé, who is Black, shouldn't be dabbling in what many consider a white music genre. At least one radio station in Oklahoma initially refused to play the album's first single, “Texas Hold'em.” Her supporters pointed out that Black Americans have a rich history in country music and cowboy culture. But the incident raised the issue of cultural appropriation: The stealing from one culture by another.  Some say that “imitation is the best form of flattery” and that cultures borrowing from each other only enriches us all. Others argue that while different cultures will always be inspired by and borrow elements from each other, there are times when borrowing crosses the line into theft.  Arguing in favour of the resolution is Monica Harris. She is a TEDx speaker, blogger, and author of The Illusion of Division. She is also Executive Director of the Foundation Against Intolerance & Racism, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization committed to bridging the ideological divide in America by focusing on shared values and interests. Arguing against the resolution is Nadra Nittle. She is a reporter for The 19th News, and  has also written for Vox.com, the Los Angeles News Group, and many others. Her books include “Toni Morrison's Spiritual Vision” and “Recognizing Microaggressions.”   Free Munk Members can vote on who they think won this debate on our website, www.munkdebates.com   SOURCES: Beyonce The host of this Munk Debates podcast is Ricki Gurwtiz To sign up for a weekly email reminder for this podcast, send an email to podcast@munkdebates.com.   To support civil and substantive debate on the big questions of the day, consider becoming a Munk Member at https://munkdebates.com/membership This podcast is a project of the Munk Debates, a Canadian charitable organization dedicated to fostering civil and substantive public dialogue - https://munkdebates.com/ Senior Producer: Ricki Gurwitz Producer: Daniel Kitts Editor: Kieran Lynch

Joining host Michael Azevedo on this episode is Michelle Ferrari, an award winning documentary filmmaker whose latest film “The American Vice-President” will debut on PBS' American Experience series on October 1.    The film explores the little-known story of the second-highest office in the land, tracing its evolution from a constitutional afterthought to its current position of enormous political consequence. Focusing on the fraught period between 1963 and 1974, when a grief-stricken and then scandal-plagued America was forced to clarify the role of the vice president, the film examines the passage and first uses of the 25th Amendment and offers a fresh and surprising perspective on succession in the executive branch.    Michelle Ferrari (Director/Writer/Producer) has been creating innovative, critically acclaimed documentary narratives for more than two decades. Her work as a screenwriter and story editor has been seen on PBS, HBO, and at film festivals nationwide, and has garnered honors from the Writers Guild of America, the Western Writers Association, the Organization of American Historians, the Sundance Film Festival, and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.   The writer of numerous AMERICAN EXPERIENCE films –– among them The Perfect Crime, Silicon Valley, Roads to Memphis, and Kit Carson –– Ferrari is perhaps best known for the highly rated Seabiscuit, which earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing.   Making Media Now is sponsored by Filmmakers Collaborative, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting media makers from across the creative spectrum. Stephen Talbot will screen his film, The Movement and the "Madman", which debuted in 2023 on the PBS series "American Experience." Talbot's 82-minute film tells the story of how two major anti-Vietnam War protests in the fall of 1969 pressured President Nixon to cancel what he privately called his "madman" plans for a major escalation of the war, including the possibility of his threatening to use nuclear weapons. After Talbot's film is screened, he will answer questions about both the history of that time and his artistry making documentary films. Guest host David Horton of Radford University and Clay Jenkinson discuss the origins and varieties of satire. With its roots in the ancient world and particularly Rome, satire exists in two broad categories: genial, bemused satire, identified with the Roman poet Horace; and biting, severe, take-no-prisoners satire best represented by another Roman poet Juvenal. The discussion explores satire in American history; Thomas Jefferson's humorlessness and his immunity to satire; classical American satirists such as Mark Twain and Will Rogers; and satire of the modern age with Johnny Carson, Bill Maher, Stephen Colbert, and Garrison Keillor. David and Clay reflect on the silo effect and media echo chambers of our time, which have made it nearly impossible for all to meet in some form of the public square to laugh at human foibles and find ways to tolerate each other.
