Paula McGuire, also know as Paula Must Try Harder, is an adventurer, writer, speaker and life coach.Paula is an anxiety survivor, that went from being practically housebound to being an endless trier and the world's most unlikely adventurer. After being told by doctors 'this is as good as it gets' and not wanting to live her life crippled by anxiety and fear anymore, she decided it was ultimately down to herself to change her situation. So she came up with an extraordinary sporting challenge in the hope it might save her life, and it did. In this episode Paula recalls how taking on adventures changed her life immeasurably, how learning to fail and pick herself up again and again may have been hellish at times, but allowed to manage her anxiety, and how all of these experiences ultimately help her remember that life is utterly ridiculous and that no matter what is happening to your or in the world, there is always light. To find out more about Paula's work check out her website www.paulamusttryharder.co.uk or you can follow her on Instagram or Twitter @pmusttryharder

Paula is an adventurer, speaker and author, but, most of all, she’s a trier. For thirty years Paula suffered crippling anxiety, panic attacks and depression that would eventually rob her of even the most basic freedoms. After decades of medication and intervention, adventure became Paula’s personal therapy in 2012, when she became Paula Must Try Harder, trying the 17 Commonwealth sports, facing her fears head on and fighting her way back into the world.    Ever since, Paula has terrified herself daily in the name of recovery, and now spends all that nervous energy writing and speaking about the importance of allowing a little fear into each day. From flying a plane and wing-walking to becoming a triathlete when she couldn’t actually swim, Paula’s adventures demonstrate that even the most ordinary person can do extraordinary things when they give that little bit extra.   Paula is currently trying something new every day in 2020.    Take a listen to Paula on the Tough Girl Podcast Extra!   Show notes Who is Paula What she had done Dream Jobs Challenge Becoming an everyday adventurer  Being terrified of failure  Walking away from the Big Mad Swim around Great Britain  Dealing with post adventure blues The Year of Fear Becoming a different person The process of dealing with loss TedX Talks Writing a list of all her fears Having a support team  Adventure as a full time job Writing her second book Trying something new everyday  The start of 2020 Starting with a beach clean Trying to fit in the adventures/challenges around everyday life Feeling exhausted in the first two weeks Having a purpose Dealing with Covid  Knowing her trigger points and keeping herself well Therapist? Since her youth she has dealt with crippling anxiety disorder, which saw her confining herself indoors and unable to communicate comfortably in the world. Through an incredibly unique approach she has found a way to manage her anxiety and do the things she has always been terrified of - in her own words turning her barriers into climbing frames. Imagine that you suffer from social anxiety that is so acute that you struggle to answer the phone, open the door to your home if someone knocks, or to go outside. Now imagine that in spite of this, you've become an adventurer, a speaker and writer. Now imagine that in two short months, you will start a journey to be the first person to swim around Great Britain. Meet Paula McGuire – our guest on Episode 75. Paula hails from Glasgow and for many years has suffered from acute social anxiety. She was bullied at school growing up, was eventually placed on medications for the condition, and found it nearly impossible to figure out what she truly enjoyed and wanted to do in life. Fear was pervasive. And yet somehow, Paula took control. She started to try things – beginning with having a go at every sport of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. She moved on to try other things – rally car driving, farming, and even being an astronaut for a day. She is a speaker and gave a wonderful TEDx talk. She is an author and has a book coming out called Must Try Harder – Adventures in Anxiety.  In April 2018, she set out on her biggest challenge yet – a 1800 mile (2897 km) swim around the coast of Great Britain – the Big, Mad, Swim Around Britain. That's not bad for an aquaphobe! As you'll hear, Paula has not eliminated anxiety. A big part of this episode and of All Things Risk is that we all grapple with fear and anxiety to an extent. We all deal with the reptilian part of our brains which wants us to avoid losses at all costs. We all have part of our psyches that want to keep us in our comfort zones. So, what Paula is doing is not only inspirational, it is also a great example of healthy risk-taking. We get into tons of wonderful stuff in this episode. I am sure you will enjoy it.
