Covert narcissism in marriage keeps survivors trapped by the belief that if they just tried harder, the relationship would finally improve. If you're exhausted from over-functioning, self-blame, and emotional gymnastics in a narcissistic marriage, this episode is for anyone questioning whether the problem was ever really you. In this episode, we unpack one of the most damaging beliefs in narcissistic abuse: “If you leave, it's because you didn't try hard enough.” This myth quietly traps survivors of covert narcissism in marriage in endless self-audits—replaying conversations, shrinking needs, managing emotions, and proving effort—while the other person remains largely unchanged. We explore why trying harder in an emotionally abusive relationship often means abandoning yourself more completely, not saving the marriage. We also talk about the toll this dynamic takes on your nervous system, including chronic stress, hypervigilance, jaw clenching, insomnia, digestive issues, and emotional exhaustion. Healing and emotional abuse recovery begin when you recognize that effort without empathy is not partnership—and leaving is not failure. In this episode, we cover: Why covert narcissism in marriage creates chronic self-blame The “try harder” myth and how it keeps survivors stuck in narcissistic abuse How emotional abuse leads to trauma responses like hypervigilance, tension, and fatigue Why over-functioning doesn't create safety or connection Reframing leaving as self-preservation, not quitting DISCLAIMER: THE INFORMATION PROVIDED BY RENEE SWANSON, COVERT NARCISSISM PODCAST, AND CNG LIFE COACHING IS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY AND IS NOT TO BE USED FOR DIAGNOSIS PURPOSES AND NOT INTENDED TO BE A SUBSTITUTE FOR CLINICAL CARE. What tears farming families apart usually isn't the big blow-ups. It's the quiet termites — the little digs, careless words, and unspoken grudges that eat away at trust. In this mini-episode, Ben Law unpacks a principle that can transform family dynamics: “Work hard not to offend — and even harder not to be offended.”You'll hear why truth-telling without timing and respect backfires, how carrying offence poisons family businesses across generations, and when offence is not only justified but essential. Ben draws on lessons from the Stoics, Lincoln, and decades of coaching rural families to show why thicker skin, forgiveness, and deliberate communication are the backbone of high-performing families. If you've ever wondered how to balance honesty with harmony in your family or business, this episode will challenge the way you handle conflict — and give you a practical standard to measure your words and reactions against.-----------------------Ben spent over 20 years working with successful business owners and farming families which allowed him to unearth the timeless principles on how to successfully grow, protect and maintain wealth. If you want to learn the principles of how to grow your family's wealth throughout the generations, then you might consider joining The AgriCoach Podcast each fortnight for more Wealth & Wisdom.Disclaimer: The information contained in this podcast is general in nature and for education purposes only. Avis found a loophole for selling used cars at whatever price he wanted. This became the norm for all rental companies. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [ECO Office Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, Dave Young, here alongside Stephen Semple. And again, breaking from tradition, if you listen to the episode just before this, which is the Hertz Rental Car, you realize that we have a spoiler. Stephen told me the topic of this podcast, gosh, a whole podcast ago. Stephen Semple: That's it. Dave Young: We talked about Hertz Rental cars, and now we're going to tell the story of Avis, number two, but they try harder. Stephen Semple: If you haven't listened to Hertz, I recommend go back and listen to it because these two stories kind of tie together. And it is interesting. We think about Avis as number two. They're not number two any longer. They're now number three. It's now Enterprise, Hertz, Avis. But that's a whole different thing. Avis is still... Look, it's a massive business. They have 5,500 locations. They do 5 billion in sales. They're a big deal. And they were founded by Warren Avis in Detroit in 1946. So just shortly after the end of World War II. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: So the war's over. Troops are returning home. Cars are now being produced for the domestic market. Because, if you remember, one of the things we talked about in the last episode was you could not sell a car domestically. All car production was going into the war effort. We've got people returning home. Roads are being built. The suburbs are the place to be. Cars are now being produced for the domestic market, and sales are exploding for cars. It's going crazy. And so Warren decides to open a Ford dealership. He sinks 10 grand of his own money in. He gets a $75,000 loan. But there's one problem with being a new car dealer at this time. The federal government puts a cap on what you can charge for a car. So there's price controls on cars. So it's actually hard to make a living selling new cars because the margin is really thin, even though lots of people want to buy it. Dave Young: If you're renting cars, you're selling them over and over and over almost. Stephen Semple: Well, you're really close. Warren finds a loophole that you can hold onto a car for six months, and then sell it as a used car, no restriction. So this is what he starts doing. However, this creates an expensive inventory problem. So it's hard to do and hard to grow because he's holding onto the cars for six months. Around this time, Warren Avis rents a car from Hertz. Now, if you remember in the Hertz episode, while Hertz did amazingly well during the war because you couldn't get a car and they had cars for rent, at the same time they couldn't replace their cars. So the cars by this time were pretty rough. Dave Young: Yeah. Oh, I bet. I mean, usually rental cars now, you don't have to have very many miles on them to have them be a little rough. Stephen Semple: And Hertz was also in what was now becoming poor locations because Hertz had located in downtown locations, and now people are moving out to the suburbs. So it was out of the way, kind of a crappy car. So Avis decides to take his new cars that he has on the lot, rent them, and then sell them as used at the six-month mark, which means he would always have new cars for rent. Dave Young: Yeah, this is the business model they're all in now. Stephen Semple: Yes.

Try. Try harder. Try longer."Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." Gal 6:9 NKJVOne of the greatest predictors of success in any endeavor is persistence. It's not only how hard you try; it's how long you try. We tend to overestimate how much we can accomplish in the short term. And according to an American pastor and author, we also "underestimate how much we can accomplish over the long haul. Why? Because energy is exponential. The harder you work and the longer you work, the more it pays off. In a study involving Japanese and American first graders, kids were given a difficult puzzle to solve while researchers measured how long they would try before giving up. On average, the American children lasted 9.47 minutes. The Japanese children lasted 13.93 minutes. That is a 47 percent difference. Want to guess who scores higher on standardized math tests?Success in any endeavor is a by-product of trying harder and trying longer. There are no substitutes. There are no shortcuts. It doesn't matter whether it's athletics or academics, music, or math [or ministry]. Study after study has shown that it takes about ten years or ten thousand hours to become great at anything. You need to work hard and work long. In the words of Malcolm Gladwell, 'Ten thousand hours is the magic number of greatness! Are there any God ideas you've given up on? Any God-ordained passions that you have stopped fighting for? Any God-sized dreams gathering the dust of disobedience? Don't give up on them. You need to try. Then you need to try harder. And then you need to try longer."Try. Try harder. Try longer. Life puts a lot of baggage on us! We have to carry other people's expectations, stress from work, family issues, health issues, and more. As we look at Psalm 62, we find a deep source of encouragement as we learn that trying harder isn't always the solution. Often the way through the struggle isn't by relying on ourselves more, it's by relying on Him. He in turn is our strength, our protection, and our path.

Bishop James Conley shares his raw and personal journey of battling anxiety and depression as a Church leader. He reveals the trap of “just try harder” and emphasizes that true healing comes only by breaking free from self-reliance. If you've ever felt the pressure to keep pushing through, this episode will challenge and encourage you to embrace authentic healing. Discussed in this episode: Bishop James Conley's personal journey with anxiety, depression, and PTSD; The surprising decision to take a leave of absence and publicly share his mental health struggles as a bishop; Recognizing the trap of “try harder” and the American mentality of “ungodly self-reliance;” Self-reliance deepening mental health struggles instead of relieving them; Breaking free of the messages of “man up,” “work harder,” and “toughen it out” which led to a loss of joy; The fears involved in admitting that “I can't fix myself;” How vulnerability and radical surrender became essential parts of his healing process; How relying on our own talents gets in the way of Christ working through us to do great things; The importance of a proper Catholic anthropology in addressing the modern mental health crisis; The impact of technology on children's mental health and the value of play-based learning; How parents, schools, and the Church can work together to support children's development; Bishop Conley's call for a radical renewal in education and healthcare grounded in Christ-centered principles. Send us a textTHE FRUIT OF LOVEFruit-Full | Part 1Springcreek Church | Pastor Keith StewartSeptember 22, 2024#god #realspringcreekchurch #fruitfull #thefruitoflove #love #character #Christ #spiritualdisciplines https://www.springcreekchurch.org/This Sunday, we begin exploring the Fruit of the Spirit. These nine character qualities are a reflection of Christ Himself. The more yielded we are to the Spirit, the more others see the this fruit or evidence of His presence in us. In a sense, the first virtue, love, is more than just another dimension to the fruit of the Spirit. It represents the virtue that binds all the others together. Each of them is somehow an expression of love. Come and join us this weekend as Pastor Keith teaches us not just the importance of the fruit of the Spirit but how to begin manifesting them in your life. -----DISCUSSION QUESTIONS1. We have two natures within us – what the Bible calls “the flesh” or our baser nature and a new nature made alive by the Spirit. The key to defeating the flesh is by living by the Spirit. Sadly, many people try to live the spiritual life in reverse. They try to defeat the flesh so they can live by the spirit. But that doesn't work. Why? What stood out to you in today's message that maybe you hadn't considered before or illustrated for you how walking in the Spirit helps to defeat the flesh?2. Spend some time talking about the cycle of self improvement (the chart that Pastor Keith shared). The four stages are; Try Harder, Fatigue, Quit, Guilt. Have you ever experienced this before? What was the area where you struggled? Have you broken free of this pattern? What helped you to break free?3. In this message, we were reminded that we are only as mature as our most immature fruit. So in reading Galatians 5.22-23, of these nine virtues that reflect the character of Christ, where are you strongest and where are you weakest (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control)? It's important to remember that wherever we discover immature fruit, it reflects a failure to trust Christ in that area. As you apply that thought to your weakest virtue, how might God be trying to grow you? What wounding might exist in that area that still needs healing? Or what cultural way of thinking gets in the way of fully submitting to Christ in this way?4. Scripture clearly teaches that being filled with the Spirit is not a one time event but a daily event. Ephesians 5.18 in the original language doesn't say “be filled” (past tense) with the Spirit, but “be being filled” (present, linear tense). The process of yielded to the Spirit's filling and control is a decision we make every day. And the best way is related to the four commands regarding the Holy Spirit.Live by the Spirit (Galatians 5.16), Be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5.18), Do not grieve the Spirit (Ephesians 4.30), Do not quench the Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5.19)To live by and be filled with the Spirit, we must never grieve or quench Him. Which means being obedient to His leadership and promptings. Have you ever felt led by the Spirit to do or say something? What was it? What happened? How did it work out?5. Why do we elevate gifting over fruitfulness?6. Love is the one virtue that bonds all the other fruit together. How and in what ways have you seen God's love put on display through your life?

Quit trying and let God's grace and Divine order go to work for you. The word grace means favor. Grace flows to us without hindrance or limitation. The most effective method to overcome, prosper, and succeed is to let go and let God work in your affairs. The secret to success is to trust God and simply do the next indicated action. Alan Cohen states, “We do not need to feverishly hustle to make sure everything will turn out right. We attract all that turns out right by being at peace.” On this episode, Darrell and Ed remind listeners to relax. There's no need to push, shove, or impress people in order to get what we want. And, during the second segment, tough and tender-hearted Terry McBride gets us to give up the fight with today's reading, “Give Thanks. God's Making The Arrangements.” Get in touch with Terry McBride: https://terrymcbride.net/ Sign up for Darrell's Journaling Class: https://www.darrellfusaro.com/store/p17/Create_Your_Best_Life_via_Journaling%21_Zoom_Workshop.html Support the show: www.Patreon.com/funniestthing
Theresa says, “I feel like I'm his lowest priority”. Even though the guy she's dating long-distance says all the right things, he is constantly busy and now she feels like an obligation to him rather than someone he's excited to see. “He doesn't want to lose me”, she says, “but he doesn't want to try either”. In this episode, Matt and Audrey talk about how to handle this on-the-fence situation, when someone says they want to see you but isn't able or truly willing to fulfil your needs, and whether you should date someone who is too busy to make you their priority right now. -- ►► Transform Your Relationship with Life in 6 Magical Days...
