We are delighted to welcome Eddy Arriola, a rock-star entrepreneur from South Florida, as today's guest. Eddy has tons of experience building and scaling businesses, including founding Apollo Bank, and he recently published a book on relationships and the art of relational leadership. Stay tuned for Eddy's expert insights on how relationships shape leadership, business growth, and long-term success. Eddy's Journey Born and raised in Miami, Eddy is the son of Cuban immigrants who arrived in the USA after the 1960 revolution. Entrepreneurship is part of Eddy's DNA, shaped by his father, grandfathers, and community. He never even considered working for anyone else, and he has never experienced a traditional job interview. In 1997, Eddy co-founded Inktel with his brothers. He started Apollo Bank in 2008 by relying on his relationships and persistence, and learning as he went. Entrepreneurial Mindset Eddy explains that your mindset is built by what you see early in life. Eddy grew up surrounded by entrepreneurs, so starting a business felt natural. He believes that you improve the world by creating jobs, building a good work environment, and setting an example as a leader. Starting Apollo Bank Eddy launched Apollo Bank without fully understanding the challenges, which helped him move forward. He started just before the 2008 financial crisis, thinking it would be a short recession. His approach was simple- he just kept on going, and through his persistence, he built credibility and trust with investors, regulators, and clients. Relationships Your biggest wins and biggest problems always come down to relationships. Leadership is about getting things done through other people- by managing relationships within your team, building relationships with customers, and within the industry, your community, and your personal life. Building Teams Teams are built through trust and relationships. Eddy reached out to people who believed in him and shared his vision. He focused on finding the right mix, including an integrator to complement his visionary role. Customer Selection Be very specific about the customers you select. By focusing on the right customers, you can deliver an A-plus product. If you try to serve everyone, your quality will drop. Eddy focused on entrepreneurs and built strong relationships through one-on-one conversations. Communities Actively seek out the right communities. Joining EO was one of the most important decisions Eddy ever made. For over 24 years, he has been connecting daily with other members, building meaningful relationships that have shaped his growth- both as a leader and an individual. Writing a Book After selling Apollo Bank, writing a book became Eddy's goal. He wrote his book for his younger self (as a CEO of a growing business). The lessons he shares can be broadly applied, especially in a time when people tend to underestimate the value of relationships. Relational Leadership Framework Many leaders tend to focus solely on their customers or teams. However, long-term success comes from understanding and working across all your relationship areas, including your relationship with yourself. The CARPE Framework By structuring your approach to relationships using Eddy's CARPE framework- Connect, Align, Respond, Prioritize, and Evaluate- you will be able to manage your relationships intentionally instead of reacting to situations. Respond vs React Do not react immediately. Instead, take a moment to think about the right response. Quick reactions can create long-term problems, whereas a thoughtful response will help you scale. Evaluating Relationships Step back often and assess your relationships. Loyalty matters, but it can slow you down if it is misplaced. So, make sure your relationships support your goals. Empathy and Understanding Understanding what is going on with the other person helps you respond better. Empathy allows you to align with the other person's perspective and move forward more effectively. Misaligned Relationships You need to recognize when a relationship cannot be fixed. Some people have patterns or issues that will never change. You may even need to let someone who performs well go to protect the organization. Allocating Time Effectively Spend your time where it has the most impact. Holding on to low-value relationships out of habit or loyalty can slow your growth. Focus your time on relationships that can move your business forward. Building Relationships The best time to build relationships is when you do not need them. Waiting until a critical moment leads to poor decisions. Build connections early so they are in place when you need them. What happens to annuity payouts when AI and medical breakthroughs start pushing life expectancy through the roof? In this episode, Stan reveals why current life expectancy tables are a one-time bargain and how to use them to your advantage. In this episode, The Annuity Man discussed: Carpe Annuity Diem and seizing today's annuity opportunities Impact of AI and medical breakthroughs on life expectancy tables Building an income floor with Social Security, RMDs, and annuities Joint lifetime income for spouses and real-life lifestyle examples Mindset shift from accumulating money to spending and enjoying it Key Takeaways: Advances in AI and medical breakthroughs like GLP‑1 drugs are likely to extend lifespans, which will eventually reduce payout levels on new lifetime income products, making today's life expectancy tables unusually attractive. Locking in guaranteed lifetime income now—through SPIAs, DIAs, QLACs, and income riders—can secure favorable payout rates before tables are adjusted for longer life expectancy. Social Security and required minimum distributions function as annuity-like income streams, and combining them with actual annuities creates a dependable income floor. Structuring annuities on a joint-life basis is a way of honoring a spouse who has "put up with you for years," ensuring they're financially secure and free to live well if they outlive you. Winning the financial game isn't just about accumulating assets; it's about learning to spend, travel, upgrade your lifestyle, and enjoy your money while you're healthy—before your beneficiaries are the ones flying first class. "Carpe annuity dang diem really comes down to life expectancy. Tables are in your favor right now. Don and Dude crash headfirst into 1989's alternative basements and hip hop boomboxes, where quiet loud guitar nightmares share airspace with sample stacked punchline barrages and label side eye. One of us dives into a twisted surf rock carnival that helped teach the 90s how to go loud quiet loud, while the other rides a brainy, boom bap Def Jam debut packed with Beastie Boys disses, Hammer threats, and the first appearance of a future underground legend. The Albums Pixies – Doolittle (1989) Pixies turn their Boston art punk chaos into a tightly wound alt rock statement, mixing sugar sweet hooks, violent surrealism, and that now classic quiet loud dynamic. "Debaser," "Monkey Gone to Heaven," and "Wave of Mutilation" spin eyeball slicing cinema, environmental dread, and surf rock murder suicide into songs that feel like pop songs and panic attacks at the same time. 3rd Bass – The Cactus Al/Bum (1989) MC Serch, Prime Minister Pete Nice, and DJ Richie Rich plant a Def Jam flag with dense golden era beats and back and forth verses that blend jokes, battle bars, and real talk about New York and hip hop credibility. From "Sons of 3rd Bass" and its anti Beastie mission statement to "The Gas Face" and "Steppin to the A M," the record plays like a long, funny, aggressive brief on who gets to be taken seriously in rap.Diggin' Albums Zach Bryan – With Heaven on Top (2026) Raw, heart on sleeve Americana and country stories about love, loss, and faith, delivered over rough hewn acoustic strums and fuller band swells. Lenny Kravitz – Let Love Rule (1989) A retro soaked debut that welds late 60s and early 70s rock and soul influences into warm analog grooves and idealistic love and unity anthems. GUM – Blue Gum Way (2026) Australian multi instrumentalist Jay Watson drifts through jazzy psych pop vignettes, each track a little mood world of woozy synths and warped guitars. Katherine Priddy – These Frightening Machines (2026) Intricate modern folk songwriting about technology, anxiety, and everyday life, wrapped in fingerpicked guitar, immersive atmosphere, and literary minded lyrics.Follow & Support Follow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing.“Carpe diem. There's also examination of how vampires crave and use power over people, which is very relevant now fascism is on the rise. The journey is long and the path can be perilous. We may find temporal ecstasy while being robbed of true happiness. Fulfillment is about finding balance and meaning. The things that are worth rising from your bed everyday may be those around you but the monotony of life can steal your real joy and replace it with specters that mean absolutely nothing. Carpe diem! For this episode of Us & Them, host Trey Kay celebrates the tenth anniversary of the podcast with the young members of Marshall University's Dead Podcasters Society, a club that is dedicated to artistic expression and following one's passions, much like the fictional group in the 1989 film Dead Poets Society. The event becomes a master class on podcasts, the intimate form of audio storytelling that has hooked hundreds of millions of listeners around the world. Kay talks with students about how he encourages people to tell him their stories and about a lifetime spent forming connections with people who hold views that are very different from his own. He also gets inducted into the Dead Podcasters Society in a ceremony that involves a sword and a vow to “seize the sound.”
In this insightful episode, The Watson Weekly welcomes Alex Yancher (Yon-cher), CEO of Passport, just hours after the U.S. government announced sweeping new global trade tariffs. With $3.3 trillion in cross-border e-commerce at stake, this conversation couldn't be more timely.Guided by a Thomas L. Friedman-inspired prologue, we dive deep into the new frontier of Cross-Border Trade (CBT) — where data, logistics, and geopolitical tension collide. Alex shares the origin story of Passport, and why global brands like Carpe, Ogee, and Tommy John trust them to turn complex international challenges into seamless consumer experiences. From navigating 25% tariffs on EU steel to leveraging bonded warehouses and real-time FX for international growth, Alex outlines how Passport is helping brands not just survive—but thrive—in a volatile environment. We explore how Shopify and others are reshaping the landscape, and why transparency, logistics branding, and TikTok-era customer experience are no longer optional—they're essential.Key Topics:The real impact of April 2025 tariffs on global ecommerceWhy “asset-light” CBT might outpace localized fulfillmentLessons from Carpe and Ogee's global expansion strategiesLogistics as CX: the new battlefield for consumer loyaltyHow Passport is future-proofing brands against regulatory shocksDon't miss: Alex's take on what archaic global trade structure he'd tear down if given the chance.

Escuchar audio

Some cliches put too much pressure on us. Seize the Day is a great example, although I'm a fan of this one BUT only because of how I see it. Also, a warning about raw jalapeños, a controversial statement about broccoli, and more. ORDER YOUR COPY: Ultrarunning for Normal People Article in this Episode Coaching: […]
Are you a mere spectator to life? Are you settling for the status quo? In Genesis, we see God inviting Abraham to go beyond the confines of his tent, look up at the stars and count them to consider the magnitude of God's promise to him. In our modern world, where we often feel overwhelmed and insulated, stepping out into nature and meditating on the vastness of creation, can recalibrate our spirits and remind us of God's greatness. Pastor Mark encourages us to embrace a mindset of curiosity and seek not only the miracles of daily life but also a profound relationship with our Creator.
