The episode features farmers, artisan food producers, and the distributers working to connect the two and create a thriving hyper-local milk market. We learn how collaboration and adding value is key to keeping dairy at the heart of the community.Milk production on Arran has a somewhat turbulent history, with external pressures such as pasteurisation legislation pushing the industry to the brink of collapse at the end of the twentieth century. However, thanks to the determination and creativity of a small number of islanders, the last remaining dairy herd on Arran survives to this day, and the industry is going from strength to strength.Episode guests:Matthew DobsonMatthew Dobson is the Production Manager at Arran Ice Cream. He has worked in the family business for over 13 years, during which time he has played a vital role in the growth and development of the brand. Having grown up on the island, Matthew is passionate about creating a high-quality product that really shows off the taste of Arran's milk, supports local farmers, and creates memorable experiences for visitors and residents alike.Calum ChaplinCalum Chaplin is an artisan cheese maker producing award-winning Arran Blue, Arran Mist (Brie) and Camembert cheeses for Arran Cheese Shop at their factory in Blackwaterfoot. The cheese is made using milk from the island, and sold in shops, markets, delis, and restaurants both on Arran and around Scotland.John MurchieJohn Murchie is a farmer who cares for the island's last remaining dairy herd at Tigheanfraoch Farm. Tigheanfraoch Farm has been part of the Murchie family since 1953 and is now home to 59 cows, with 47 milked twice a day, 365 days a year. The cows enjoy a natural, seasonal lifestyle, grazing on Arran's rich pastures in summer and fed on homegrown silage in the colder months. Magic Island Storytelling Theatre: Strange Tales From The Isle Of Arran: Ghost & fairy tales & more.

Just a week or so ago, I performed my show THE PASSION OF TAM SHANTER here at Whiting Bay on the Isle of Arran. Like most of my live shows, this was not scripted - though it was rehearsed so intensively that I always had a clear idea of where I was going next with the words and narrative: in that sense it wasn't purely improvisational, unlike several of the folk tale performances I do here on the podcast, eg Wild Katy & The Living Dead or The Murderer's Hand etc. etc. The only catch with such an intricate, but also text-free, show is that if I decide months later that I want to do another live performance, I have a job in hand reminding myself of all the intricacies of a story every bit as complex as one of my scripted audio dramas for Audible or the BBC: there's no script to consult! So I thought I'd perform the whole thing one more time for the microphone, to serve as a kind of aide memoire for rehearsals of the next theatrical performance, whenever that should happen. And then, of course, having done all this, I thought that recording a decent enough bit of storytelling to go here on the podcast for those who might never get the chance to see me performing live. So here it is, in the five 'acts' that befit a tragic drama. The story, obviously, is my very modern version of the classic ballad of Tam O'Shanter by Robert Burns. But whereas the original is distinctly, tongue in cheek, Burns as a man of the 18th century enlightenment making fun of supersitions surrounding wirchcraft, even as he derives narrative excitement from them, my version is a much more serious contemporary psychological horror story, more in keeping with the folk tale versions of this material which preceded that of Burns. Likewise, while Burns's protagonist is very much the cliche of Scotsman as drunken Jack-the-Lad, I - like many modern Scots - am a little weary of that stereotype, so my Tam is drunk on power and ambition rather than whisky. At the same time, his cavalier attitude to the women in his life may at times echo the behaviour of Burns himself. But I want the story to be taken on its own terms, as a powerful modern thriller. Here's the start of it....

A report on Oranga Tamariki has concluded the agency's letting down Māori children. The Independent Children's Monitor's found 65 percent of Māori who grew up in care, have children who follow the same path. It also shows 95 percent of Māori youth offenders had been the subject of reports of welfare concerns to OT. Monitor chief executive Arran Jones says Māori fare worse in the system under nearly every key metric - and this can have long-term implications for their futures. From the early days of crofting and subsistence farming to the present day, animal protein has provided an essential and highly valuable source of nutrients for Arran's population. While sheep and beef production have always been central to Arran's farming economy, venison is now also being embraced as a sustainable protein source that can help to combat the growing threat that the wild deer population poses to island ecosystems. In this first episode of our new series Agroecology Around Arran, we explore how the production of meat on Arran embraces the ethos of agroecology, how farmers are working together to reduce carbon emissions from livestock farming, and what we can learn from their example.GuestsAlistair CurrieAlistair talks to us about his livestock farm based in the Shiskine Valley. He maintains a herd of around around 30 native-breed beef cattle which are fed on pasture and home-grown silage.Colin CurrieColin Currie is an upland hill farmer who has been farming sheep and beef at Bridge Farm with his wife Laura since the 1970s. Bridge Farm is situated within a SSSI-designated site that is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Colin uses his innate knowledge of the land to create a low-input livestock system that has allowed him to reduce reliance on external markets, maximise animal welfare, and work in harmony with the surrounding ecosystem.Zoë HughesZoë Hughes runs Wild Isle Venison with her partner Chris. Their work aims to honour the deer that are harvested alongside protecting the natural landscape on Arran and strengthening the local food chain. Zoë is passionate about sustainable, affordable meat that has a positive impact on the environment. Wild Isle Venison works to reconnect producers and consumers, processing venison in small batches and selling to local residents, chefs and businesses across the island.Alec PirieAlec Pirie is a Senior Consultant and Area Manager for SAC Consulting. He has also recently completed a Master's degree in Wildlife, Conservation and Management. Alec started the Net Zero Arran group in 2019. Some courses people will be familiar with but others less so. The likes of Aberfoyle are not on many bucket lists (until now), places like Iona and Harris require some serious commitment to get to, and some bigger names like Cruden Bay and Prestwick rightly hold a place in Jim's heart. We also talk about the process of uncovering the history of these lesser-known courses, collecting old postcards images and the beautiful architecture of the buildings that often accompany these smaller well-preserved courses. Great to own. Great for a gift. Side note: out charity link for our upcoming 95 hole challenge around Arran can be found here. All donations hugely appreciated. In celebration of Single Cask Nation's 15th anniversary, Joshua and Jason revisit a conversation they had with Anthony Wills, Owner and Managing Director of Kilchoman Distillery. When Single Cask Nation launched, the first three casks of whisky bottled were from Arran, BenRiach, and Kilchoman. We here at SCN HQ consider ourselves incredibly lucky to have been the only independent bottlers to have legally bottled a cask of Kilchoman independently. The boys discuss this and other things as a new introduction to this older episode, one of their favorite conversations to date. Joshua and Jason consider themselves incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to travel all over the world to interview some of the most interesting people within the whisky-making industry (and each guest is as interesting as the next). Few, however, are able answer things as candidly as the good Anthony Wills does in this episode. It's his distillery so he gets to do things and talk the way he likes. We like this. We are thankful for this.  So, as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! As Arran Lamont fights alongside his brothers and lifelong friends, Lain and Sean, in the war-torn regions around them, he is tested by betrayal, loss, and the steady destruction of everything his clan has built.Even in the darkest moments, the heart of the Lamont family beats strongly through the women who hold the community together—Allie, Ariel, Lady Mary, and Isabel—offering charity, stability, and spiritual strength when hope is hardest to find. Their resilience becomes a cornerstone of the clan's will to survive. From Highland games to clandestine raids, from feasts to fog-shrouded battlefields, Arran's transformational journey is one of loyalty, courage, and a love that quietly grows stronger through the turmoil. But as the Campbells tighten their grip and the land burns around them, Arran and Lain are forced to rethink their fight. What begins as open warfare shifts into rescue missions, covert strategies, and the fragile beginnings of a daring plan for their people's future.Haunted by the horrors he's witnessed and bound by duty to those who remain, Arran faces an impossible choice: continue a war that may consume them all…or lead his people toward a new beginning across the ocean, where survival may come at the cost of everything he knows.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio.

Magic Island Storytelling Theatre: Strange Tales From The Isle Of Arran: Ghost & fairy tales & more.

Was on the mainland (or "the big island" as we say here on Arran) last week and picked up yet another book of Scottish folk tales. This one featured a really creepy tale from Shetland - and, as my sister happens to be there this week, I thought I'd do my own distinct, improvised take on it. Huddle close and shiver, folks....

What if the secret to thriving through change wasn't about having all the answers, but knowing how to move without them?In this episode of the 4D Human Being podcast, Phil and Pen bring us the final instalment of their Leading Through Change series, recorded on the beautiful Isle of Arran, exploring the one mindset that changes everything — adaptability.Drawing on Phil's background in professional improvisation, this episode is packed with practical, tangible tools you can bring into your meetings, your leadership and your everyday life starting today.Phil and Pen walk you through how to:Adopt the Yes And mindset: swap instinctive blocking for curiosity and open up possibilityReframe failure as feedback: build the muscle that turns setbacks into learningLet go of the original plan: hold your destination lightly and trust the route will find itselfNormalise "I don't know yet": because honesty in change is a strength, not a weaknessNarrate your adaptations: a powerful tool borrowed from the military to keep you grounded and in controlChange isn't slowing down. The leaders and teams who thrive won't be the ones with the tightest plan. They'll be the ones who've trained themselves to stay present, stay curious and keep moving.

The Independent Children's Monitor says Oranga Tamariki still isn't measuring up to national care standards. The percent of young people in OT care suffering abuse has increased from 8 percent to 10 percent in the year to July last year. The report says a third of those in care aren't seeing social workers enough and only 11 percent had been given an assessment of their life skills. Independent Children's Monitor CEO Arran Jones says it's important to ensure that children in state care are properly looked after - and this data isn't good reading. Magic Island Storytelling Theatre: Strange Tales From The Isle Of Arran: Ghost & fairy tales & more.

Here's a little blast from the past. A while back, I posted my version of a traditional folktale which I gave the title A Kiss Of Salt. This was well received - and one of my own favourite pieces - but more recently, my hosts for this podcast did some kind of AI sweep looking for plagiarism among material posted. It turned out that someone had written some song which had nothing to do with my story but which made some reference in its title to a kiss being salty. This also happened with another of my stories Wild Hearts, Warm Hearts - again there was no link between my extended folklore-based story and a reference to hearts in someone's three minute love song but AI, as we all know, is anything but intelligent. As a result both pieces were peremptorily removed from the podcast. I was sent an appeal form but only one form, though two stories had been taken down - and apparently the AI could only process one submission per form. Wild Hearts, Warm Hearts was quickly found "Not Guilty" and restored but not A Kiss Of Salt. Because it was not plagiarised - my source was a public domain folk tale which, in the interest of full disclosure, can be found in Volume 1 of Robert Hunt's 19th century collection Popular Romances Of The West of England or The Drolls, Traditions & Superstitions of Old Cornwall (I was working in Cornwall when I first encountered the story, Hunt's book being the Cornish equivalent of the Brothers Grimm) - I here confidently repost it - but, to save confusion, post it not under my preferred title but under the title Hunt's collection gave it: The Mermaid's Vengeance. That maybe gives more of the game away than i'd like, but I'm proud of the story and performance and my very Arran reinvention of it - so here it is, back again. Enjoy!

This week, Alan sits down with Gavin Hogarth to dive into the world of Tartan Warrior and the thriving OCR scene at Fit Body Farm. Gavin shares what's coming up for this year's event weekend — from the 3K Championships to the new 400m course and junior races — and the philosophy behind designing courses that challenge seasoned racers while staying fun and accessible for newcomers. They look back at the success of past obstacles and community favourites, explore the logistics of hosting the British Obstacle Sports 3K Championships, and talk about the unique challenges of planning races around life on a working farm. Gavin also opens up about the origins of Fit Body Farm, how a 115‑year‑old dairy farm became a buzzing fitness hub, and the evolution of their HIROX simulations and Friday Night Rocks competitions. Alan and Gavin round things off with a tour of Scotland's scenic gems — from castles to the Isle of Arran — and why OCR in the Scottish weather just hits differently. A blend of passion, community, and pure OCR grit.  If you have any questions about the show or would like to explore advertising opportunities, feel free to reach out to us at admin@ukocr.com.
