Ironing the folds: The phase space chevrons of a GSE-like merger as a dark matter subhalo detector by Elliot Y. Davies et al. on Wednesday 12 October Recent work uncovered features in the phase space of the Milky Way's stellar halo which may be attributed to the last major merger. When stellar material from a satellite is accreted onto its host, it phase mixes and appears finely substructured in phase space. For a high-eccentricity merger, this substructure most clearly manifests as numerous wrapping chevrons in $(v_r, r)$ space, corresponding to stripes in $(E, theta_r)$ space. We introduce the idea of using this substructure as an alternative subhalo detector to cold stellar streams. We simulate an N-body merger akin to the GSE and assess the impact of subhaloes on these chevrons. We examine how their deformation depends on the mass, pericentre, and number of subhaloes. To quantify the impact of perturbers, we utilise the appearance of chevrons in $(E, theta_r)$ space to introduce a new quantity -- the ironing parameter. We show that: (1) a single flyby of a massive ($sim 10^{10}$ M$_{odot}$) subhalo with pericentre comparable to, or within, the shell's apocentre smooths out the substructure, (2) a single flyby of a low mass ($lesssim 10^8$ M$_{odot}$) has negligible effect, (3) multiple flybys of subhalos derived from a subhalo mass function between $10^7-10^{10}$ M$_{odot}$ cause significant damage if deep within the potential, (4) the effects of known perturbers (e.g. Sagittarius) should be detectable and offer constraints on their initial mass. The sensitivity to the populations of subhaloes suggests that we should be able to place an upper limit on the Milky Way's subhalo mass function. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.05679v1
The Phase Space Structure in the vicinity of vertical Lyapunov orbits around L1,2 in a barred galaxy model by M. Katsanikas et al. on Wednesday 21 September We study the phase space structure and the orbital diffusion from the vicinity of the vertical Lyapunov periodic orbits around the unstable Lagrangian points L1,2 in a 3D barred galaxy model. By perturbing the initial conditions of these periodic orbits, we detected the following five types of orbital structures in the 4D spaces of section: (i) Ring-like structures, sticky for large time intervals to the unstable invariant manifolds of the simple and double unstable vertical Lyapunov periodic orbits. (ii) 2D tori belonging to quasi-periodic orbits around stable periodic orbits existing in the region. They are associated either with vertical stable periodic orbits around L4,5 or with "stable anomalous" periodic orbits. (iii) Orbits sticky for large time intervals to these tori, forming "sticky tori", before they slowly depart from them. (iv) Clouds of points that have a strong chaotic behavior. Such clouds of consequents have slow diffusion speeds, because they are hindered by the presence of the tori around the "stable anomalous" periodic orbits. (v) Toroidal zones consisting of points that stick for long time on the unstable invariant manifolds of the "unstable anomalous" periodic orbits. By continuing the integration, we find that eventually they become strongly chaotic, retaining however small diffusion speeds, due to the presence of the tori around the stable anomalous periodic orbits. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.10249v1

There are 4 laws to thermodynamics, and they are some of the most important laws in all of physics. The laws are as followsZeroth law of thermodynamics – If two thermodynamic systems are each in thermal equilibrium with a third, then they are in thermal equilibrium with each other.First law of thermodynamics – Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It can only change forms. In any process, the total energy of the universe remains the same. For a thermodynamic cycle the net heat supplied to the system equals the net work done by the system.Second law of thermodynamics – The entropy of an isolated system not in equilibrium will tend to increase over time, approaching a maximum value at equilibrium.Third law of thermodynamics – As temperature approaches absolute zero, the entropy of a system approaches a constant minimum. Before I go over these laws in more detail, it will be easier if I first introduce Entropy.Entropy and Phase SpaceEntropy is a very important thing in the realm of thermodynamics. It’s the core idea behind the second and third laws and shows up all over the place. Essentially entropy is the measure of disorder and randomness in a system. Here are 2 examplesLet’s say you have a container of gas molecules. If all the molecules are in one corner then this would be a low entropy state (highly organised). As the particle move out and fill up the rest of the container then the entropy (disorder) increases. If you have a ball flying through the air then it will start off with its energy organised i.e. the kinetic energy of motion. As it moves through the air however, some of the kinetic energy is distributed to the air particles so the total entropy of system has increased (the total energy is conserved however, due to the first law)To get a more detailed picture of entropy we need to look at the concept of Phase Space. Some of the concepts for this may be a bit confusing but bear with me, once you’ve got your head round it it’s not that bad.A phase space is just like a graph, but a point on this graph represents the whole state of a system. Let’s use an example. Imagine I have a box with 4 gas particles inside. Each point in the phase space for this system tells you where all 4 balls are located in the box.
Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.09.08.287755v1?rss=1 Authors: Zangeneh Soroush, M. Abstract: Artifact elimination has become an inseparable part while processing electroencephalogram (EEG) in most brain computer interface (BCI) applications. Scientists have tried to introduce effective and efficient methods which can remove artifacts and also reserve desire information pertaining to brain activity. Blind source separation (BSS) methods have been receiving a great deal of attention in recent decades since they are considered routine and standard signal processing tools and are commonly used to eliminate artifacts and noise. Most studies, mainly EEG-related ones, apply BSS methods in preprocessing sections to achieve better results. On the other hand, BSS methods should be followed by a classifier in order to identify artifactual sources and remove them in next steps. Therefore, artifact identification is always a challenging problem while employing BSS methods. Additionally, removing all detected artifactual components leads to loss of information since some desire information related to neural activity leaks to these sources. So, an approach should be employed to suppress the artifacts and reserve neural activity. In this study, a new hybrid method is proposed to automatically separate and identify electroencephalogram (EEG) sources with the aim of classifying and removing artifacts. Automated source identification is still a challenge. Researchers have always made efforts to propose precise, fast and automated source verification methods. Reliable source identification has always been of great importance. This paper addresses blind source separation based on second order blind identification (SOBI) as it is reportedly one of the most effective methods in EEG source separation problems. Then a new method for source verification is introduced which takes advantage of components phase spaces and their dynamics. A new state space called angle space (AS) is introduced and features are extracted based on the angle plot (AP) and Poincare planes. Identified artifactual sources are eliminated using stationary wavelet transform (SWT). Simulated, semi-simulated and real EEG signals are employed to evaluate the proposed method. Different simulations are performed and performance indices are reported. Results show that the proposed method outperforms most recent studies in this subject. Check out our sponsor, Day 11 Podcast, at www.day11podcast.com!Hello you beautiful humans, and welcome to a world where nothing makes sense to me anymore. This episode starts out in one of the most jarring ways I can imagine, and that's with a complete role-reversal during what has become a very familiar series of routine check-ins between Dolores and Bernard. This scene ends with Dolores holding the board that controls Bernard, talking about fidelity, and I am totally unsure what to make of any of this. Then there's what's going on with Maeve and her daughter. She's finally found the little girl and clearly has an enormous connection with her, so that has remained the same somehow...but that's about the only thing that has. Her daughter has a new mom, and the tribe that was menacing them in the past has apparently turned a corner and wants to work with her somehow, but Maeve is not interested. I wish she would listen! I'm dying to know what this is all about. Thank you so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!
