Yes, it's time for James to bang on about The Last Of Us again (sorry) but that's okay, because we have Charlie Brooker and Jessica Rhodes on the show to balance things out by talking Black Mirror Season 7 (37:05). Aside from forcing Kay to watch more ‘zomzies' in The Last Of Us (on Sky Atlantic), we also head over to Disney+ to watch Denise Gough take part in the playdate from hell in The Stolen Girl (1:28:19) and take a slightly surreal look at the world of self-sharpening drill bits (stay with us) in Government Cheese on Apple TV+ (1:39:46). In this episode of Talk2TheHand, we dive into the fascinating evolution of Sky TV, the network that revolutionised British broadcasting. From its scrappy beginnings in the late 1980s to becoming a powerhouse in sports, entertainment, and news, Sky's journey is one of bold risks, fierce competition, and game-changing innovation. We explore how Rupert Murdoch's ambitious venture transformed from a struggling satellite operation into a household name that reshaped how the UK watches television. We start by revisiting the early days of Sky Television, when it battled for survival against British Satellite Broadcasting (BSB). The infamous "satellite wars" of the early '90s set the stage for Sky's dominance, culminating in the dramatic merger that created BSkyB. We'll unpack the challenges Sky faced—financial losses, technical hurdles, and skepticism from traditional broadcasters—and how clever marketing and strategic partnerships helped turn the tide. Of course, no story about Sky is complete without talking about its groundbreaking acquisition of Premier League broadcasting rights in 1992. This bold move didn't just change the face of British football; it revolutionised sports broadcasting worldwide. We discuss how Sky Sports redefined live sports coverage, introduced new technologies, and created an entirely new viewing culture around football, boxing, cricket, and more. But Sky wasn't just about sports. We delve into the network's expansion into movies, original programming, and news, including the launch of Sky News, which brought 24-hour rolling news coverage to the UK for the first time. From cult classics on Sky One to the rise of Sky Atlantic's prestige dramas, we explore how Sky diversified its content to compete with streaming giants in the digital age. Finally, we reflect on Sky's lasting impact on British media and culture. With the rise of streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, how has Sky adapted to stay relevant? What does its acquisition by Comcast mean for its future? Join us as we unpack the story of Sky TV—a tale of ambition, innovation, and the ever-changing landscape of television. Talk2TheHand is an independent throwback podcast run by husband and wife, Jimmy and Beth. Obsessed with 90s nostalgia and 90s celebrities, we'll rewind the years and take you back to the greatest era of our lives.   New episodes bursting with nostalgia of the 90s released on Tuesdays. What a thruple! At 28, she is wise beyond her years and on her way to stellar success. We talk about being realistic about perfectionism, how to stop caring about negative voices and how she overcame her own mental health struggles. ‘Sweatpea' is out now on Sky Atlantic and Now TV. If you've been affected by any of the issues raised by our discussion on Trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder) or self-harm, you can find more resources here. Have something to share of your own? Yes, our sister TV pod is elbowing its way unbidden into your playlist and forcing itself into your ears like an unwanted U2 album. But before you go skipping ahead, why not stay a while and have a listen? For one, it will greatly reduce the possibility of James coming over to your house, putting headphones on you and playing it to you while you sleep. Plus, you might just enjoy it.On this particular episode, James, along with co-hosts Boyd Hilton and Kay Ribeiro, invite Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal into the Pilot studio to talk about Spanish-language boxing drama a Máquina on Disney+. Elsewhere, Kay gets pilloried for daring to take some time off, James is lambasted for his egregious (if entirely oblivious) queue-jumping, and there's some seasonal spooky chat about the best TV-based horrors. As well as reviewing La Máquina, the team also take a look at starry Apple drama Disclaimer with Cate Blanchett, and Sweetpea on Sky Atlantic, in which Ella Purnell gets in touch with her inner sociopath. And if you like this episode, why not subscribe to Pilot TV? Dropping every Monday, it's a perfect accompaniment to the Empire pod — after all, who doesn't need a guide to the murky waters of modern streaming TV? You can't watch everything.

Ruth Wilson is our guest on the show this week, talking about A Very Royal Scandal, which comes to Prime Video this week but is also heavily embargoed so we can't tell you about it on this week's show. Luckily, she can! Plus, we're all up in The Penguin's business this week as that spinoff from Matt Reeves' The Batman lands on Sky Atlantic and Now. Agatha All Along… is also embargoed, so we'll be tackling that on this week's Pilot+, but that does mean we have the bandwidth to return to Channel 5 for The Wives and, to properly send James off the deep end, we give the Frasier reboot another chance over on Paramount+. It doesn't go well. All that and we also find the time for an emergency Emmys drop-in, discussing this year's winners.

This episode features a conversation with film producer, Adam Stanhope. It was recorded in July 2024.Alongside the likes of Mike Medavoy, Rodrigo Blaas, Keith Chapman, and executive producer, Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam produced the animated feature film, Ozi – Voice of the Forest, which hits theatres across the globe on August 16th. With a background in marketing and media, Adam has helped finance and produce an array of programmes across a range of genres, including Sky Atlantic's Grierson-nominated sports documentary, The Fall, BBC Worldwide's Earth, and Channel 4's Ministry at the Dome.Adam's media career started in the 1980s, selling airtime for British TV network, ITV, before working his way up the ranks to Director at hugely successful UK Advertising agency Still Price Court Twivy d'Souza. After leading one of IPG's Global Media Agencies, Initiative Media, working with clients like Unilever, Johnson and Johnson, Coca Cola and Virgin Atlantic, Adam co-founded GCI Film to produce and finance movies.Adam's passions are film and the environment, and the Voices franchise, of which Ozi – Voice of the Forest is the first instalment, seeks to raise climate change awareness for a new generation.Amongst other things, Adam and I discussed the power of animation to act as a vehicle for climate literacy, the challenges that large productions can run into as they prepare to launch, and what superstars, like DiCaprio, can bring to such projects. Today we are joined by two incredible women, Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, and I am not sure I will ever recover!  Like me you may already be obsessed with them after watching the TV show, True Detective: Night Country, which is available to watch now on Sky Atlantic, streaming service NOW and available to download and own on digital platforms. on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK. It is edge of your seat amazing! If you have already watched the whole series PLEASE DM me so we can debrief immediately.  If, however, you have missed the action so far True Detective: Night Country is a murder thriller set in the high arctic of Alaska and follows two detectives, Danvers and Navarro who are on the case when scientists from a research facility go missing. The disappearance opens up a can of worms as it turns out the research facility is linked to a mine that is poisoning an indigenous community, and it's also linked to a cold case of a woman from the community who was brutally murdered. The twists and the turns are incredible and you won't see the ending coming!  On today's episode we have a proper debrief about the show and we also reflect on the pair's game changing careers. We all know two time Oscar winner Jodie from the likes of Silence of The Lambs, Taxi Driver and Panic Room to name just a few (!!!) and Kali, before she recently started acting (this is only her THIRD acting role) achieved six world boxing titles, and you know how much we love a female athlete on this podcast (if this is your first time here, check out our two women in sports series!).  We also talk about one of the show's most important themes: violence against women, and why as a society we need to talk about it more.We chat about the power of feeling seen, and why comparing yourself to your younger self isn't healthy.  What I love about this episode is we are joined by two women who are, in their words, finally fully in their power after finding freedom in their life. That is something Reign is all about, so I hope you love this episode and if you do, please get in touch with me via social media @joshsmithhosts! And speaking of epic shows, if you missed it, check out last week's episode with One Day star, Ambika Mod! See you next week, love Josh x Learn more about your ad choices. She joined TV-am as their Scottish correspondent in 1984 and, save for a brief maternity leave 30 years ago, has barely left the schedules since - for the last 14 as host of ITV's Lorraine. Now after a lifetime of wanting to, she has written her first novel, The Island Swimmer, a story of family secrets, island communities and overcoming fear. Lorraine joins Anita Rani to discuss her novel, her life and her 40-year career. The deaths of three women in one week, all allegedly murdered by their husbands, has caused outrage in Somalia and sparked days of protests over the country's femicide rates. Police have named the suspects in all three killings, which took place in the first week of February, as the dead women's husbands. Two of the victims were pregnant. The BBC's Fardowsa Hanshi, a video journalist with the Somali Service explains what's going on.Kali Reis is the breakout star of True Detective: Night Country. As the series nears its finale on Sky Atlantic on Monday, Kali joins Anita in the Woman's Hour studio to talk about going from a career in boxing to acting with Jodie Foster. She is also an indigenous rights activist, who has Native American and African heritage, and was the first indigenous woman fighter to become a World Champion.Last month, Woman's Hour discussed a shocking report which warned of endemic misogyny and discrimination in the music industry. MPs from the Women and Equalities Committee found that sexual harassment and abuse is common. That report has resonated with many – and not just in the music industry. Award-winning broadcaster Gemma Cairney has written a piece in The Guardian about her experience, saying she'd battled racism and misogyny in creative industries for years. Gemma tells us about the reaction to her piece. Yes, you all the champagne room following the main show. Enjoy, and see y'all live again Tuesday!   As the Boomer Generation hits retirement age, we're looking at a 68 trillion dollar transfer of wealth to the younger generation. THE GUARDIANS is a revealing investigative documentary set in Las Vegas, Nevada that exposes allegations of corruption within the Nevada Guardianship and Family Court systems involving the legal kidnapping of elderly people. The film shines a light on a lucrative business that drains seniors' life-savings and robs them of their freedoms. Victims and their families are caught in a scheme that has allowed corrupt court-appointed guardians to take total control over their healthcare and financial decisions. Armed with court-orders obtained under dubious circumstances, guardians are able to forcibly remove elderly wards from their homes, isolate them from their families and systematically empty their bank accounts.   In an unfolding saga that reaches to the top level of government, a growing number of Las Vegas victims come together to seek justice, restitution and freedom. Through their fight, the film exposes the scope of the systemic abuse of some of the most vulnerable members of our society.   As our aging population is about to record the largest transfer of wealth in history, we must protect them and their families from those that have been using a broken system to take advantage.   For 40 years nothing and no one has stood in their way. Until now.   About Filmmaker Billie Mintz: BILLIE MINTZ is an award winning filmmaker who has produced and directed feature length documentaries and narrative short films.
