In today's episode (and what is now another favourite episode), Glenn and I had the extraordinary, inspirational, and activational opportunity to hang out with new friend, classmate, coach, keynote speaker, and author of "Play Your Bigger Game" - among other things - Rick Tamlyn! After telling us how much he loved our opening question, Rick began by telling us he believes we are all creative beings here to create. Not only that, but that it's fun to create! This was the jumping of point for a conversation that lasted nearly two hours, during which we touched on creating from life, rather than getting through it; and, that we're all making stuff up to calm down our anxiety. We talked about distinctions (e.g. how Rick is envious rather than jealous of Brené Brown), and how offering distinctions is a great leadership skill. We talked at length about what it means to play your bigger game; how you're never NOT showing up; how the antidote to doubt is actually commitment not confidence (and why Rick makes that distinction); and, that the real source of security is our creativity - creativity which is always, always, always looking for, and will ultimately find a home. Rick even told us about one of his favourite books, "Creativity Inc." by Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull, and why he's recommended it time and time again to people really interested in playing their bigger game! Context, creativity, "do to get" vs. "express and receive" (thank you Leza Danley); dominion vs. domination; identity vs. image... the conversation just kept on going! Rick also talked about what it was like when he found out Iyanla Vanzant had recently talked about his "Play Your Bigger Game" book and what it takes to be a leader on her inspirational show "Iyanla's Anti Viral Message"! This and so much more...! By the end of the conversation, all 3 of us were grinning ear to ear; and Glenn and I are still flying high days later! Glenn and I also gave a very heartfelt, grateful shout out to our podcast peeps, listing numerous cities and countries from all over the world to show our appreciation for your love and support! Thank *you*! Plus, there's the super fun Rapid Fire Question Round at the end! A new episode posted every other week! This is week 2 of the Feminine Power course by Claire Zammit. It was a challenging one! I honestly didn't make it all the way through the material because it required some deep excavation of my beliefs about myself and my power. Claire asks some really challenging and important questions in this week and you may find yourself wanting to answer them as well. The end goal was to identify where I uniquely felt powerful - once I did that things started to become clearer around what some next steps are going to look like for me. But sometimes when you start to find your power you are also thrown curve balls to test how committed you are to standing in that power, this last week has also been a very personally challenging week and I almost didn't release this episode. Shout out's this week to the book Play Your Bigger Game by Rick Tamlyn and Episode 16 of the Empowered You Podcast with Kelly Espino (sorry, I don't have a link for this one). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/l-o-v-e/message
Rick Tamlyn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/rick-tamlyn-076477/) inspires people to be their best. He is the author of Play Your Bigger Game, a coach, and a motivational speaker. Rick discusses his book, exercises he utilises at his workshops, and how we can overcome our avoidance of judgment. What inspired you to write the book – The Bigger Game? [1:01] Laura Whitworth, one of the co-founders of The Coaches Training Institute, was working on a philosophical context of helping people bring more to the world. She then asked Rick if he wanted to be a part of it. “It came out of our own hunger to activates other peoples’ hunger.” Can you give an example of what caused you to create and become who you are today? [3:49] Rick was elected president of the youth group in his church when he was sixteen. He met with the minister at the beginning of the year and told him that he was not interested in doing the same old stuff in the youth group. The group took on a large project and dedicated their whole year to it, illustrating a clear example of a bigger game. Later, Rick was requested to give a sermon, during which he really learned what leadership is. Can you say a little bit more about the Bigger Game model? [6:53] It has nine elements and is laid out similar to a tic-tac-toe board. Some of them include compelling purpose, comfort zones, and bold action. “The words on it are not new. The conversation it creates is new.” It’s called bigger game, not bigger goal. Rick insists that he is not a goals coach and that he actually hates the word “goal.” When you focus on bigger game, your goals will happen organically. Speaking from your heart is key. [9:41] People have a fear of failure, or even a fear of success. With Rick’s gameboard, people talk to each other in his workshops about comfort zones. A comfort zone can be helped by having a compelling purpose that is bigger. The organizations that Rick sees talk blatantly about failure are the most successful. What is the biggest challenge you see when working with people in organizations? [15:58] Avoidance of judgment, which Rick admits he is also guilty of. Rick says that it’s very likely for the world to think we’re crazy if we have a bigger game. The paradox is that most of us wish that the world wasn’t judgmental. Knowing that you won’t be perfect at your bigger game can help. Rick believes we should dare to know things for our clients; don’t worry about being right. Be curious about the judgment that is coming at you. What is a tip you can give to someone who fears being judged? [22:00] Curiosity is the antidote to judgment. And again, dare to show up. What is one final message you’d like to say? [25:21] Don’t overthink it. Over-create it. Create something faster instead of trying to think about the creation.
