In this engaging episode of the Stuck In My Mind Podcast titled "Activate Your Potential: Rick Tamlyn on Living Your Best Life," host Wize El Jefe welcomes Dr. Rick Tamlyn, an internationally renowned speaker, coach, and creator of the Bigger Game. Tamlyn's mission revolves around helping people design and live meaningful and impactful lives, a theme that resonates throughout the conversation. The episode begins with an intriguing discussion about the origin of the Bigger Game, a philosophy, and framework that Tamlyn developed over his 38-year career in personal growth and coaching. He describes it as an evolving concept, manifesting in various forms such as a book, workshop, a talk, and possibly a movie in the future. Rooted in the idea that the happiest people are those who are up to something bigger than they know how to create, the Bigger Game encourages individuals to view life as a game filled with opportunities. Tamlyn opens up about a pivotal moment in his life, sharing his personal journey of coming out as a gay man in the 1970s, navigating the AIDS crisis in New York City, and overcoming societal judgment and challenges. This personal struggle propelled him into coaching, leading him to become an advocate for helping others live authentically. Tamlyn emphasizes the importance of living a life aligned with one's values and shares insights on how to define and pursue what constitutes a great life. The episode delves deep into the elements of the Bigger Game, highlighting how people can push past fear and comfort zones to pursue their dreams and live out their potential. Tamlyn presents the nine-square Bigger Game board, which acts as a tool for assessing where individuals stand in their journey and what actions they need to take for growth. He articulates several foundational squares such as Hunger, Compelling Purpose, Gulp, Investment, Allies, and more, explaining how each plays a critical role in the game of life. Throughout the conversation, Wize El Jefe and Rick Tamlyn bond over shared philosophies and experiences. Wize reflects on his personal journey, opening up about his fears, losses, and eventually finding purpose and joy through podcasting. His story exemplifies the principles of the Bigger Game—embracing discomfort, confronting fear, and taking bold actions to make a meaningful impact. As the episode continues, Wize and Rick explore the concepts of living boldly, the importance of self-reflection, and ways to maintain motivation and inspiration when helping others achieve their dreams. Rick, drawing from his extensive experience, offers valuable insights into how people can uncover their life's compelling purpose through experimentation and reflection, advocating for trying different things to discover what truly resonates. The episode concludes with Rick emphasizing the importance of not worrying too much about what others think and embracing one's unique journey. His parting advice encourages listeners to play their own bigger games, live authentically, and continually strive for a more meaningful existence. Throughout the discussion, both Rick and Wize convey a shared commitment to impacting the lives of others, offering encouragement to anyone seeking to unlock their potential. Listeners of this episode are treated to an inspiring and heartfelt dialogue filled with practical wisdom from Rick Tamlyn's personal experiences and professional expertise. The conversation serves not only as a guide to living a fuller life but also as a testament to the power of personal transformation and intentional living.

In today's episode (and what is now another favourite episode), Glenn and I had the extraordinary, inspirational, and activational opportunity to hang out with new friend, classmate, coach, keynote speaker, and author of "Play Your Bigger Game" - among other things - Rick Tamlyn! After telling us how much he loved our opening question, Rick began by telling us he believes we are all creative beings here to create. Not only that, but that it's fun to create! This was the jumping of point for a conversation that lasted nearly two hours, during which we touched on creating from life, rather than getting through it; and, that we're all making stuff up to calm down our anxiety. We talked about distinctions (e.g. how Rick is envious rather than jealous of Brené Brown), and how offering distinctions is a great leadership skill. We talked at length about what it means to play your bigger game; how you're never NOT showing up; how the antidote to doubt is actually commitment not confidence (and why Rick makes that distinction); and, that the real source of security is our creativity - creativity which is always, always, always looking for, and will ultimately find a home. Rick even told us about one of his favourite books, "Creativity Inc." by Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull, and why he's recommended it time and time again to people really interested in playing their bigger game! Context, creativity, "do to get" vs. "express and receive" (thank you Leza Danley); dominion vs. domination; identity vs. image... the conversation just kept on going! Rick also talked about what it was like when he found out Iyanla Vanzant had recently talked about his "Play Your Bigger Game" book and what it takes to be a leader on her inspirational show "Iyanla's Anti Viral Message"! This and so much more...! By the end of the conversation, all 3 of us were grinning ear to ear; and Glenn and I are still flying high days later! Glenn and I also gave a very heartfelt, grateful shout out to our podcast peeps, listing numerous cities and countries from all over the world to show our appreciation for your love and support! Thank *you*! Plus, there's the super fun Rapid Fire Question Round at the end! A new episode posted every other week! It's here! The 200th episode of the STaR Coach Show! I'm thrilled and honored to have covered such informative content with the amazing guests we have featured on the show. This milestone episode is a compilation of thoughts from seasoned coaches about what they wished they had known when they first began as a coach. The responses are varied and value-packed, and I hope you enjoy these coaching insights.  Show Highlights: These coaches were asked: “What do you know now that you wish you had known when you first started coaching?” Meg Mann, MCC, and co-owner of Clarity Professional Development shares two specific concepts: Go on the coaching journey with the client to help them get clear on what they truly want. Enjoy being a co-discoverer and co-explorer with the client as a travel companion with an open mind.  Dr. Renee Moorefield, MCC, and CEO of Wisdom Works shares the following: The upfront goal or problem of the client that's most obvious really isn't it. There is usually a deeper goal, aspiration, challenge, or need, and it's often something around meaning and purpose in life and work. Rick Tamlyn, MCC of The Bigger Game and Produce You, shares the following: Instead of performance anxiety in wondering if I, the coach, am doing a “good job,” I should be committed to my client's dream for their life.  Andrew Bennett, TEDx and keynote speaker and executive coach, shares about his self-awareness: Coaches need to put aside their ego and fear of rejection to be self-differentiating in their coaching conversations.  Alison Hendren, CEO, and founder of Coaching Out of the Box shares the following: Coaches aren't responsible for solving problems for their clients, but they should support the client in finding their way.  Jean Oplinger, MCC, Insights facilitator, Master Personal Brand Strategist, and Gallup Strengths Coach shares the following: A coach should follow their passions, values, and strengths, but should “go narrow and deep” into the specialty that mirrors that passion. Kathleen Stinnett, MCC, principal, and founder of FutureLaunch shares the following: Be bold and true to yourself in discerning what kind of clients you want to work with because you will invest essential and critical work with that person over time. Ilene Schaffer, Positive Psychology specialist and creator of Mindful Stepping echoes the importance of being true to yourself: Having a health action and a connection action for your clients (and yourself!) is extremely important. Help the client identify how they will pursue these actions from session to session.  Dr. Ann Deaton has more to add about being true to yourself and your values: A coach should listen to the advice of others, but be discerning and do a “gut check” to determine the approach that works best for them.  Mary Henderson, personal branding and social selling specialist, adds the following: Don't believe everything you see on social media! Notice the red flag when you try to follow what everyone else is doing, and step into the genius zone of YOUR skills. Terri Levine fromhttp://www.heartpreneur.com ( Heartpreneur.com) adds the following: A consulting skill set may be a better fit than coaching, because you can give strategy and advice that guarantee results for your client.  Teresa Pool, MCC from Transitions for Business, adds the following important insight: A coach starting out should invest in hiring a virtual assistant. There are many tasks that someone else can handle, and you will have more time to focus on your practice.  Diane Ingram, Professional Certified Success Unlimited Network Coach and Coach Trainer adds the following about the coaching journey: Trust the process through the ups and downs of coaching.  Fran Fisher, author and international speaker shares the following about her coaching journey: The coaching journey is an adventure, so trust the process instead of second guessing,...

This is week 2 of the Feminine Power course by Claire Zammit. It was a challenging one! I honestly didn't make it all the way through the material because it required some deep excavation of my beliefs about myself and my power. Claire asks some really challenging and important questions in this week and you may find yourself wanting to answer them as well. The end goal was to identify where I uniquely felt powerful - once I did that things started to become clearer around what some next steps are going to look like for me. But sometimes when you start to find your power you are also thrown curve balls to test how committed you are to standing in that power, this last week has also been a very personally challenging week and I almost didn't release this episode. Shout out's this week to the book Play Your Bigger Game by Rick Tamlyn and Episode 16 of the Empowered You Podcast with Kelly Espino (sorry, I don't have a link for this one). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/l-o-v-e/message

Rick Tamlyn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/rick-tamlyn-076477/) inspires people to be their best. He is the author of Play Your Bigger Game, a coach, and a motivational speaker. Rick discusses his book, exercises he utilises at his workshops, and how we can overcome our avoidance of judgment. What inspired you to write the book – The Bigger Game? [1:01] Laura Whitworth, one of the co-founders of The Coaches Training Institute, was working on a philosophical context of helping people bring more to the world. She then asked Rick if he wanted to be a part of it. “It came out of our own hunger to activates other peoples’ hunger.” Can you give an example of what caused you to create and become who you are today? [3:49] Rick was elected president of the youth group in his church when he was sixteen. He met with the minister at the beginning of the year and told him that he was not interested in doing the same old stuff in the youth group. The group took on a large project and dedicated their whole year to it, illustrating a clear example of a bigger game. Later, Rick was requested to give a sermon, during which he really learned what leadership is. Can you say a little bit more about the Bigger Game model? [6:53] It has nine elements and is laid out similar to a tic-tac-toe board. Some of them include compelling purpose, comfort zones, and bold action. “The words on it are not new. The conversation it creates is new.” It’s called bigger game, not bigger goal. Rick insists that he is not a goals coach and that he actually hates the word “goal.” When you focus on bigger game, your goals will happen organically. Speaking from your heart is key. [9:41] People have a fear of failure, or even a fear of success. With Rick’s gameboard, people talk to each other in his workshops about comfort zones. A comfort zone can be helped by having a compelling purpose that is bigger. The organizations that Rick sees talk blatantly about failure are the most successful. What is the biggest challenge you see when working with people in organizations? [15:58] Avoidance of judgment, which Rick admits he is also guilty of. Rick says that it’s very likely for the world to think we’re crazy if we have a bigger game. The paradox is that most of us wish that the world wasn’t judgmental. Knowing that you won’t be perfect at your bigger game can help. Rick believes we should dare to know things for our clients; don’t worry about being right. Be curious about the judgment that is coming at you. What is a tip you can give to someone who fears being judged? [22:00] Curiosity is the antidote to judgment. And again, dare to show up. What is one final message you’d like to say? [25:21] Don’t overthink it. Over-create it. Create something faster instead of trying to think about the creation.
