We had an invaluable nostalgia solidarity session with Susie Ulrey of Tampa's beloved, emo veterans POHGOH, whose new album du und ich elaborates on Susie's daily fears of living with Multiple Sclerosis, love and loss, and learning how to live through the uncertainty of a global pandemic.
Welcome everyone to episode 494! Our guest for this episode is a phenomenal person, a musician, and a songwriter. Please clap hands for the amazing Susie Ulrey from the band "POHGOH"!! Be sure to pick up the new album "du und ich" Warning this music is fantastic and will make you feel all the feels!
Formed in 1994 out of punk rock roots, Pohgoh's poppier sounds earned the Florida band comparisons to acts like Velocity Girl and Superchunk. A split single with Braid was released in 1996 and by the time Pohgoh was ready to record a full length, singer Kobi Finley had been replaced by Susie Richardson. What should have been the start of a great relationship with the newly created label Deep Elm Records wound up dissolving quickly after drummer Keith Ulrey unceremoniously quit the band after the full length, In Memory of Bab, had been recorded but shortly before a record deal was signed. Ulrey's departure led the band to break up in 1997 though Ulrey and Richardson's relationship developed and the former bandmates wound up getting married in 2000. In 2016, Pohgoh reunited and two years later released Secret Club on Ulrey's New Granada Records. An opening slot on a Jawbreaker reunion tour happened in 2019 which led to the band recording another new album, Du Und Ich, which came out in October 2022. Songs In This Episode: Intro - Friend X (from The Emo Diaries Chapter One: What's Mine Is Yours) 6:03 - Tell Me Truly (from In Memory of Bab) Outro - Try Harder (from Secret Club) Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. We postpone the interview a few days, as there's a hurricane bearing down on Florida. Tampa staved off the worst of it, but it's another one of those things – counting yourself lucky that you made it through another one okay. In addition to managing the occasional natural disaster, Pohgoh's existence has been a series of ups and down. The group spent the better part of two decades in a kind of quantum state – together, but also not really – until it properly reunited in 2016. This year's du und ich is the group's second LP in this latest go-round. It's a deeply personal record, setting Susie Ulrey's life with Multiple Sclerosis against an indie-pop backdrop. Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. Today we're talking with Keith Ulrey of Pohgoh. We talked about Dag Nasty's 1987 album "Wig Out at Denko's" & the history of the band and its many reunions/lineups. We also chat about Keith's record label New Granada & his record store Microgroove, which if you ever find yourself in the Tampa area, I highly recommend. Lastly, Pohgoh has a new album, "Du Und Ich," coming out later this year on Spartan Records, so keep an eye out for that! Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. Today we're talking with my good friend Paul Dechichio of Tor Johnson Records. We talked about Hum's 1995 album, "You'd Prefer an Astronaut." We also talk about Tor Johnson's 20th anniversary & doing something for the love of it and not trying to "keep up with the Joneses," as they say. Tor Johnson is celebrating the anniversary by releasing a split 7" every month for the whole year. Bands like The Body, Into It Over It, Slingshot Dakota, Pohgoh, Thou and so many others are involved. The subscription series sold out, but you can still get copies from the bands as they get released and from select record stores. The world has a funny sense of humor sometimes. I've been asking Keith Ulrey to come on this show since day 1 but either schedule or Covid concerns have made that difficult, until n....no wait a minute, throw technical difficulties into the pot. Keith and I just had a super fun conversation and now it lays at the feet of show producer, Michael Sinclair to save me (no pressure Mike). Anywho, Keith Ulrey holds many posts in the local music scene as member of the band POHGOH, owner/operator/curator of Microgroove Records, and wearing almost all hats for music label New Granada. But more than any of those things, Keith is emblematic and a manifestation of every thing I love about music and our scene in general. He's cultivated and maintained a life in music that is just as admirable an achievement as any PHD, MD, JD, etc. Gather round (god willing) and listen to what Doc Ulrey has to say (dear lord/Mike resuscitate his mic). Stay tuned for how this cliffhanger unravels!
Interview with Tampa, FL multi-instrumentalist Brian Roberts. Bands to Brian's credit are U.R.N., Lazy Susan, Hankshaw, Slap Of Reality, Failure Face, Scrotum Grinder, Murder-Suicide Pact, Pohgoh, and more!
Since calling it quits in 1997, Tampa, FL's Pohgoh has been known to break out the guitars for the occasional one-off reunion over the years. In August 2017 the band made their way to Baltimore, MD's Magpie Cage Recording Studio to record their sophomore full-length with engineer/producer J. Robbins resulting in Secret Club, With a rich history within the 90's DIY/indie/emo scene, Pohgoh was in a small league of female-fronted bands of the era alongside peers like Rainer Maria, Dahlia Seed & Jejune. The band's previous catalog includes several singles, a split 7" with Braid, the closing track on the Emo Diaries, Vol. 1 and the aforementioned full-length. You can hear them mentioned in Episode 51 with My Pal Trigger and Episode 52 with Ryan from Discount. I got Keith on the Skype and this is what we talked about: Recording their music video His record store Microgroove in Tampa The show where Judge broke up Their album All Along Emo Diaries Vol 1 Sarasota Opening for Jawbreaker on their reunion tour (this story is wild) New album with J Robbins The band Hank shaw His label New Granada What label would they want a future release to be on And a ton more Check them out here If you market aggressively on Instagram Stories and want custom stickers then go here to get custom stickers or just email mike@drive80.com and I can send you samples. I interviewed Susie Ulrey from the band Pohgoh! She's a guitarist and singer/songwriter who is living with Multiple Sclerosis. She's a huge inspiration to me as she continues to create great art and thrive despite living with a disease that robs her of her mobility and peace of mind. After our interview, she sent me this fantastic poem and I asked her if I could include it in the show notes: The Thing Is | Ellen Bass to love life, to love it even when you have no stomach for it and everything you’ve held dear crumbles like burnt paper in your hands, your throat filled with the silt of it. When grief sits with you, its tropical heat thickening the air, heavy as water more fit for gills than lungs; when grief weights you like your own flesh only more of it, an obesity of grief, you think, How can a body withstand this? Then you hold life like a face between your palms, a plain face, no charming smile, no violet eyes, and you say, yes, I will take you I will love you, again. Susie Richardson Ulrey has seen so much of the independent music community: from a rock school in Tampa to the rise of emo and women performers in the '90s. The Pohgoh front joins to talk about her love of DIY, her co-owned label New Granada Records, how she shares her experiences living with multiple sclerosis, and her support of inclusivity in music. Today we welcome Susie Ulrey from the band Pohgoh. I first heard about the band on the first volume of the Emo Diaries compilation. They were everything I wanted in a band when I was playing music back in the day. Susie and I met up in New York City recently to chat and we discussed her upbringing in Florida, getting into the scene, her crush on Brent with a bowl cut and why a community is so important. We also chat about her living with MS and the many challenges of daily life and trying to continue to make music. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
