Paul Rutner in conversation with David Eastaugh Mumps were a popular band at clubs such as Max's Kansas City and CBGB. They also performed at Irving Plaza and Maxwell's (Hoboken, New Jersey), and opened for the Ramones at Hurrah in August 1978. Their concerts were lively and featured energetic, expressive performances from Lance Loud and other band members on songs like "We're Americans", "I Believe In Anyone But You", "Strange Seed", "Brain Massage", "Scream and Scream Again". Their first 45 record single was "I Like To Be Clean", backed by "Crocodile Tears" on Bomp Records. Their second was "Rock & Roll This & That" with two B-sides: "Muscleboys" and "That Fatal Charm". The recorded version of "Rock & Roll This & That" interpolated a short guitar riff from the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", but in live performances, they would interpolate other riffs such as David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel". In spite of these two independently produced singles, they failed to secure a contract with a major record label, notably being told "'We don't want ‘the gay band'" by A&M

News Nation travel editor Peter Greenberg said “The good news is, in most cases, these crimes are not crimes committed or targeted at travelers or tourists. They're gang versus gang crimes, much like we've seen in Mexico over the last 15 years. The Black mother standing inside the kitchen with a squeaky screen door, said to her Black child, “Go make me some Kool aid, to which the child replied, what kind?”  Black mother said– RED Koolaid, and the rest is history. Justin Conigliaro is a singer, writer and lead guitarist of Brooklyn-based punk rock outfit Up For Nothing. Founded in 2001 in the days of The Temple in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn DIY staple, Up For Nothing has gone on to tour all over the United States releasing 5 albums including the band's most recent “Escape Route”, released through San Diego, It's Alive Records. I've known Justin longer than almost anybody I've had the privilege to call friend. It started with my high school ska band playing with them at Arlene's Grocery, and our friendship has transcended many eras of our lives; nights that include seeing countless bands, long van rides to other states, excursions to The Fest in Gainesville, FL, and more times seeing The Bouncing Souls than I could ever try to count. I still have the ticket stub somewhere of the time I got to see them open for Sum 41 at Union Square institution, Irving Plaza. We talk movies, music, New York sports, the unhealthy side of nostalgia, and just a million things. TURKANA FARMS, LLCGreen E-Market Bulletin October 29, 2023Turkeys stroll in a copse of trees Photo by Mark ScherzerWar and Thanksgiving PeaceHi All, Mark here.Ever since 1969, Thanksgiving has meant to me the coziness of home, a celebration of enveloping security. Maybe it represented that to me because Thanksgiving was the first time I returned home after leaving for College. Coming back to a world of parental supervision and support, I always brought with me friends who, because of distance from their homes, needed a surrogate family on that occasion. Our holiday was not highly formal. My mother, an elementary school teacher, offered a sort of "in loco parentis" familiarity I think some of my friends still remember fondly to this day.November weather contributes to the need for a homey, warm event. Thanksgiving is the first major holiday after summer when you really want to sharing a meal indoors. My association of the holiday with a certain cocooning embrace led me recently to confide to an old friend that I could not envision Thanksgiving this year. How could I celebrate it, wracked as I am by feelings of insecurity in war time? I don't know about you, but my daily anxieties about Ukraine have been magnified a thousand fold by the war in Israel and Gaza. The anxiety erupts frequently. Friday, Eric and I were at Irving Plaza in Manhattan. A packed house, almost all 30 or more years my junior, heard Charlotte Cardin, a young singer/songwriter from Québec. It was a phenomenal show, inducing a sort of ecstatic loss of reserve, with her adoring fans voicing the lyrics in her place during their favorite songs. I too was transported. But then I found myself, observing the swaying crowd, wondering whether the young ravers at Kibbutz Re'im had been similarly transported when Hamas invaded and killed 260 of them? What if we were attacked right then?Back at the farm Saturday, the abnormally warm weather had me working outside. But I questioned my privilege to engage in the most routine activity. How could I be glazing, washing and installing storm windows to make my house air tight when so many Gazans, if they had windows left, live in fear of their homes being collapsed on top of them?Yes, we are thousands of miles away from the trouble. But I fear that divisions over the war could cleave our society as deeply as Vietnam did and that it will lead to the same sort of scapegoating as unfairly happened then. I fear being one of the victims of that scapegoating. When I confided to my friend that Thanksgiving seemed impossible with the hovering worries of war, he laughed. He studies history for his work. "Don't you know," he said, "that Thanksgiving was decreed as a holiday by Abraham Lincoln in 1863, right in the middle of the Civil War?"No, I didn't know. Our national myth is that Thanksgiving started when the Puritan settlers of Plymouth, Massachusetts, shared a feast in 1621 with the Wampanoag who helped sustain them, and the holiday just continued. It's more complicated than that. Europeans before they settled here often had harvest festival meals. But the first recorded joint harvest meal between Europeans (Francisco Vásquez de Coronado) and Native Americans (the Teya people) was actually in 1541 in Texas. Government decreed thanksgivings occurred sporadically: in 1777 in all 13 original colonies, in 1789 (decreed by George Washington), and in 1815 (decreed by James Madison). Beginning in 1827, abolitionist author Sarah Josepha Hale began campaigning tirelessly for a nationally decreed annual holiday. Her efforts bore fruit only in 1863, after the Union was victorious in the Battle of Gettysburg, where 50,000 lives were lost. President Lincoln then declared the holiday, in these words penned by Secretary of State Seward:I ... invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, …to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving... And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him[i.e. God] …, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union. We should do this year do as Lincoln suggested. Make the holiday an occasion to commit ourselves and our country to do what we can, after the terrible loss of life that will occur in these wars, for reconciliation and peaceful coexistence of the combatants. It is in the spirit of the holiday. And, because this is a farm bulletin, I ask you, in a crass commercial, to consider making Turkana Farms part of your holiday. After a five year hiatus, I once again raised heritage breed turkeys this year. They are slow growing birds, bred for flavor rather than fast growth or enormous breasts. They've been lovingly fed on the finest organic grain from Stone House Farm. They've spent the summer flying where they will, roaming freely in the pastures. Their darker meat and the fat they develop gives them a far richer flavor than your standard butterball. They make unforgettable centerpieces to your Thanksgiving feast.Raising them has been a joy. Processing them has become a challenge, because two nearby facilities have gone out of the poultry processing business (one of them out of business entirely). The birds will therefore be processed on November 14, and they will spend 5 days in a freezer before distribution, either in New York City on Monday, November 20, or at the farm from Monday to Wednesday. I still have unreserved birds, particularly the delectable small hens (7 to 9 lbs) which are ideal for cozier gatherings that to me best embody the holiday. I invite your reservations. Reggaefest.    I've attended many Reggaefest parties, including a couple of Yacth Fetes and 2022's Blaze party by South Street Seaport. Epic League and CJ Milan have taken this party on the road with stops in Washington DC, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Boston, and Toronto. I believe in this brand and can see a future where it goes to Latin America and Europe—potentially even a multi-day cruise. My favorite thing about the party is the format. The party is called Reggaefest, and they mostly play Dancehall. There's also Soca, Afrobeats, a little Reggaeton, and Ampiano as of this year. They played Hip-Hop in the early ReggaeFest days(a few years ago), but I prefer they don't. Many other parties call themselves Reggae this and Reggae that, but they play close to an hour of hip-hop—false advertising on their part. I also love that there are hardly any performances. Great DJs and great music keep us dancing all night long. Having attended this party for some time and spending my hard-earned money to do so, I have a couple of criticisms. New York Reggaefest has gotten stale.   Their fabulous DJ lineup keeps the vibes going, but they play the same songs at each party. A playlist that changes very little. Another criticism is the same venues all the time. Stage 48 is the main culprit. As a fan, I'd like to see a guest DJ at the monthly parties and different changes of venues. Let's do one month in SOBs and one in Irving Plaza—a day party at Knockdown Center or the Elsewhere space in Brooklyn. I wish the Reggaefest team continued success, but I haven't attended as many of their parties this year because of this stale feeling. I'd love to continue going, but please give me more variety.   Thoughts? Comments? Do so on the blog here.  Rate, like, leave a review! On today's edition of "Flashback Friday's", I highlight a record that came out in the year 2017. The record I have chosen for this week comes from The Movielife and it's called "Cities In Search of A Heart". The Movielife is a Long Island punk rock band composed of vocalist Vinnie Caruana, guitarist Brandon Reilly, and drummer Brett Romnes. The band originally formed in 1997 and disbanded in 2003, but announced their official reunion in December 2014. Caruana and Reilly re-connected as friends and shortly afterwards began talking about a potential the Movielife reunion. The band subsequently began rehearsing in December 2014, performing their first shows since 2011 in New York City at Irving Plaza in February 2015. Asked whether a new album would be released, Caruana said he would "never rule that out". The Movielife performed several additional shows in the US later in the year, including an appearance at Today's Mixtape Festival, as well as a tour of the UK in June. In March 2016, Caruana revealed that the band were in the process of writing new material. The following month, the band released "Future Feeling (Afraid of Drugs)" as a single. In 2017, the group performed at Slam Dunk Festival in the UK. All promotional materials posted to the band's Twitter after the 2016 Presidential election feature only Brett Romnes, Brandon and Vinnie, implying they are the only current members of the band. The band's fourth album, Cities in Search of a Heart was released in September 2017 through Rise Records. In May and June 2018, the band supported New Found Glory on their Sick Tour in the US. Moving the Fourth of July fireworks back to the Brooklyn Bridge for the first time since 2014 went off without any problems, although it did leave a few flames burning on the bridge after the fireworks were finished. It seemed to be the smoldering remains of the fireworks casings or leftover chemicals and not the infrastructure of the bridge itself. The FDNY fireboats stationed in the East River made quick work of the flames, holding back from using the full force of their water cannons so as not to damage the bridge. This was the 43rd annual Macy's fireworks display. From the editor: A Great Big City will no longer publish to Facebook 1 year ago on July 4, 2018 — A woman climbs the Statue of Liberty pedestal, causing Liberty Island to be evacuated and canceling many midday Fourth of July tours It's been three years now since a tourist stepped on an explosive device in Central Park, and police have no new leads into where the device came from or its intention. If you have any information or photos from that day, contact NYPD CrimeStoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (1-800-577-8477), via text message at CRIMES (274637), or via online form. In 2017, the NYPD and ATF increased the reward for potential leads to $40,000. 33 years ago on July 7, 1986 — A man with a sword attacks Staten Island ferry passengers 8 years ago on July 7, 2011, we were tracking the first seasonal case of mosquitoes infected with the West Nile virus being detected in the region. According to data collected by the CDC, July begins the active season for West Nile infections, which are spread via mosquito bites, so now is the time to be prepared and protect yourself from mosquitoes if you will be outside. If you'll be traveling overseas, take special precaution to avoid mosquito bites, and consider a vaccination against diseases that are common in the areas where you will be traveling. If you're staying in the city, you can even do your part by calling 311 with a report of standing water, defined as a place on public or private property where water gathers and remains for more than five days, creating a habitat where mosquitoes may breed. 108 years ago on July 9th, 1911, the New York Times described how a streak of hot weather, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees during the beginning of July 1911, made it difficult to transport ice from insulated storage warehouses to the "Greeks and Italians who have little ice depots in convenient basements", where people found it more convenient than waiting for the ice delivery wagons. Special honor goes out this week in recognition of Alelia Murphy, who will celebrate her 114th birthday on July 6th in Harlem. She is believed to be the oldest living American. Ms. Murphy was born in North Carolina in 1905 and has lived in Harlem since the 1920s. Combined with the outbreak in Rockland County, New York State continues to make up the largest percentage of the nationwide total, which, at 1,077 cases, has now surpassed numbers last seen 27 years ago and has become the largest outbreak seen since the disease was declared eliminated in the year 2000. We looked at the city's number of measles cases last week on episode 21, and new numbers this week show that the outbreak continues to grow. Within the city, there have now been 498 total confirmed cases, and increase of 32 over last week, and in data from the CDC, the nationwide total is now at 839. A new school has been ordered closed this week for failure to follow the city health commissioner's public health emergency plan introduced last month. On May 13th, the city ordered the Yeshiva of Central Queens closed for failing to "exclude unvaccinated students for 21 days following a known exposure at the school." This is the 9th school closed by the city, and all others have since been allowed to reopen after modifying their practices to comply with the emergency plan. This outbreak is the worst the United States has seen since 1994, when the yearly total was 928 cases nationwide. In response to the ongoing outbreak of measles, the city has partnered with local (hut 'zu lah) Hatzolah emergency medical groups and the Maimonides Medical Center to make the measles vaccine available to the community, regardless of medical insurance or ability to pay. Various times and locations are available on a poster provided by the city that you can view online, or you can call 311 for more information or stop by the Hatzolah offices Boro Park, Williamsburg, or Flatbush. Within the city, Orthodox Jewish communities are hardest hit due to a combination of unvaccinated individuals and travelers returning from Israel, where there has been an outbreak of measles since last year. In the city health department data, Williamsburg has the highest total number of cases, at 379, and has added 20 new cases just in the previous week. The city has also carried through with restrictions outlined in an official health department declaration from last month, closing multiple schools and citing 98 individuals for failing to show proof of vaccination or to obtain a new vaccination. Measles is a highly contagious disease that is spread through the air as sick individuals cough or sneeze. The measles vaccination is included in MMR shots, standing for measles, mumps, and rubella, that contain a specially-weakened form of the virus that trains the body's immune system on how to defend against that virus in the future. For information on where to obtain a measles vaccination, call 311 or view information from the Department of Health at nyc.gov/doh. 100 years ago on May 16, 1919 — Members of the "Russellites" religious sect living in Brooklyn receive reduced sentences after being charged with distributing anti-war materials. 135 years ago on May 17, 1884 — P.T. Barnum leads a parade of 21 elephants across the Brooklyn Bridge, which had opened just one year earlier Wegmans supermarket comes to the Brooklyn Navy Yard on 7am on October 27th, when the 74,000 sqft store opens where Admiral's Row once stood. An update to last week's deadly Harlem fire at the Frederick E. Samuel Apartments that claimed the lives of four children and two adults in the early-morning hours of May 8th. FDNY fire investigators determined the cause to have been an open flame on the stove, and that Andrea Pollidore had a habit of disabling the smoke detector while she cooked because it would begin to alarm so easily. A source told NBC4 that the stove was found in the "on" position, so it seems to have been left burning at some point that day and eventually fire spread late in the night, when smoke overtook the apartment before the family inside could escape. Killed in the fire were 4 y/o Elijah, 6 y/o Brooklyn, 8 y/o Andre, 11 y/o Nakyra, their mother Andrea Pollidore, and family friend 32 y/o Mac Abdularauph, who was previously reported as a step-son. A GoFundMe page has been set up by a family member to cover the funeral costs and has received over $40,000 in just six days. 80 years ago on May 17, 1939 — The first televised sporting event takes place at Columbia University 57 years ago on May 19, 1962 — Marilyn Monroe performs "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" as part of John F. Kennedy's 45th birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden Mayor de Blasio held an announcement at Trump Tower on May 13th: In what was either a shortsighted location choice or an attempt to draw attention to a possible presidential run, de Blasio faced a cacophonous scene for his New York City Green New Deal press conference, with Trump Tower turning up the music in their lobby speakers and about a dozen protesters taking endless rides on the escalators behind the podium while carrying "Trump 2020" and "Worst Mayor Ever" signs. The city's Green New Deal plan would fine large buildings like Trump Tower for the pollution they emit, and buildings account for 70% of carbon emissions within the city. 73 years ago on May 20, 1946 — A twin-engine military plane crashes into 40 Wall Street, killing all on board A Great Big City has been running a 24-hour newsfeed since 2010, but the AGBC News podcast is just getting started, and we need your support. This triangle at the corner of 93rd and FDR Drive is nicely landscaped and surrounded by a low, decorative fence, and inside is a large stone monolith that reads "East River Drive Triborough Bridge Approach". This marker is from the 1930s when both the East River Drive (FDR Drive) and the Triborough Bridge (RFK Bridge) were built and is giving drivers some very advance notice that this road leads to the bridge on-ramp at 125th Street, much like the green overhead highway signs do today.
