Tongue twisters that mock techno-optimism and cite critical theory don't usually make for catchy song lyrics. But indie rocker Rosie Tucker's Utopia Now! finds beauty in the dross of late capitalism. Over 13 songs backed by distorted guitars and blazing drum fills, Tucker's searing vocals bemoan the inherent dislocation of our modern world while searching for moments of truth and human connection. The night before Tucker embarked on a tour, Nate visited their home studio to speak to them about the inspirations behind their latest album. Although it deals with “big” topics, Tucker stressed that it all comes back to the individual and that the world we have reflects the world we make. “I am trying to reckon with both processing personal resentment,” they told Nate, “and recognizing my own role in my own misery.” Songs Discussed: Rosie Tucker - All My Exes Live In Vortexes, Lightbulb, Paperclip Maximizer, Unending Bliss Erik Satie - Gymnopedie No 1 Learn more about your ad choices. ok! last show on broadcast radio station kcsb-fm 91.9 for now, maybe ever, but definitely for now. i’ll continue doing a podcast or whatever but i don’t think the podcast feed is actually working anymore so it’s really just an .mp3 that you can download or stream. i’m cool with moving in reverse technology-wise. like, maybe we should continue in reverse and i should make you cassette tapes? naw, i’m not gonna do that. every time i say i’m gonna do that i don’t do it. just take the .mp3 and put it on your zune and skip about your day. i hope you hear at least one song you like and you go search the band on the web and buy something. i don’t know what i’m going to do next week yet. come back and find out.DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 BBQT “Flinch” Nice View02:13 Jeffrey Alexander “Rewinding” Meditations For Beowulf05:05 Suspect Parts “You Know I Can’t Say No” You Know I Can’t Say No07:56 Knife Wife “Dreamland” Family Party10:07 Woolf “Last Woman” The right way to play11:10 CUNTSTOMER SERVIXXX “Care Package” No Refunds13:50 Sadurn “shower song” Split w/ Ther16:08 Ther “april in paris” Split w/ Sadurn20:16 Fragile Gang “Never Know Which Way To Go” A Plausible and Desirable Future25:13 Empath “Soft Shape” Active Listening: Night on Earth28:13 Demodex “False Connections” Padded Cell29:48 Florist “Shadow Bloom” Emily Alone33:23 Gen Pop “Easy” On The Screen34:17 Strange Ranger “Sunday” Remembering The Rockets37:33 Tony Molina “Can’t Find My Way” Songs From San Mateo County38:22 April Magazine “parade” parade41:34 Marbling “honey mouth” honey mouth42:33 Hairband “Bubble Sword” Hairband45:11 Jeremy Wuan “VIBRATIONS WAKE” OTHER WAUN47:58 Rosie Tucker “Spinster Cycle” Never Not Never Not Never Not50:20 Will Henriksen “Mumu” Blue House52:29 Unlimited guests “loop still on” my way to hell53:18 kenny 3 “heat” gjicken

dear livejournal, are you shy or outgoing? are you introverted or extroverted? a shy extrovert? an outgoing introvert? i thought i knew what i was, but i guess it’s totally situational. large events with lots of people make me anxious, but if i’m organizing it, or have some sort of meaningful role, that totally changes my energy level. i love attention. hand me a microphone and i become a monster. i’ve had a preference for plans and schedules but maybe i can go with the flow? just need to make sure i take breaks and recharge. it’s cool to learn new things about yourself. drink water.DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)DROOL “Sky” DROOL IINADINE “Pews” oh myChris Cohen “Song They Play” Chris CohenRosie Tucker “Beautiful Machine” LowlightBlessed “Thought” SaltCry Babe “Soft Honk” Be CoolPotty Mouth “Liar” SNAFUCasey Chisholm “Slow Down” Try Not to QuitBellows “Judgment” The Rose GardenerNeato fleets “kingsland” gorgonheadCamp Counselor “black crayon” scabsDan Francia “Stereotype” Come Back To LifeZack Benlan “Jenny is a Genie” Jackaroo in the SlewToyota “Atomic” ToyotaVery Crush “Very Possibility” Sleeping SeventeenStrange Passage “No End in Sight” Shouldn’t Be Too LongPreening “Everything Is A T-Shirt” Gang LaughterYeesh “Well Adjusted” Confirmation Bias

Rising star singer Rosie Tucker has no fears about performing in front of huge crowds, but when it comes to fish, especially those who want to bite their toes, well, forget about it...that's real terror. And, as they tell Monica and Kaitlin this week, their religious upbringing also filled them with fears they're still wrestling with, and probably always will.
