Do you wonder “Is this perimenopause?” Do you wonder what it looks and feels like? Get information on how to adjust and alter your exercise when you are. My Guest: Abby Chitty, a single mom with 5 kids between 15 and 24. She owns her own business as a realtor. We met on Instagram and I invited her to be a guest in this unique episode where we're doing a coaching call and you get to listen over the fence. Questions We Answer in This Episode: [00:05:15] What does perimenopause look like for asymptomatic women over 50? [00:20:00] What changes do we need to make to our workout routine? [00:25:00] If asymptomatic, how do we know if we're moving through the stages and how then do we judge what changes to make? What's Showing Up for Abby? Gaining 20 lbs slowly post-kids, despite a healthy lifestyle. Feeling frustrated when traditional diet and exercise weren't effective anymore. Friends telling you might be “doing too much” in terms of fitness. 5 days/week strength training Seasonal long-distance running (up to 30K) Uses YouTube programs with fast-paced, minimal-rest formats Occasional yoga/mobility work Exercises to failure, prefers lifting heavy Time to Flip the Switch with Abby: Overtraining & Recovery Benefit from less frequent but heavier strength sessions Incorporating rest + slower tempo lifting could help. Recovery may be insufficient—without it, muscle building stalls. Running & Cortisol Long runs + strength + possible fasting = cortisol overload. Midlife women are more vulnerable to stress and hormonal shifts. Lower estrogen increases cortisol response, impacting body composition. Sleep & Metabolism Sleep deprivation is linked to stubborn weight and reduced muscle recovery. Abby averages 5.5–6.5 hours of sleep, with limited REM/deep sleep. Need more sleep to trigger growth hormone/testosterone release. Supplements Try specific forms (glycinate or L-threonate) and gradually increase the dose. Abby uses magnesium oil and a multivitamin with magnesium. Nutrition A little caloric deficit is okay, but eat enough. Not doing it too long creates stress. Reintroduce sweet potatoes. Carbs with high fiber at night will help us sleep better. Key Takeaways to Know Is This Perimenopause? You might be in perimenopause without classic symptoms: Weight gain and sleep disruption can be early signs. More isn't always better in midlife exercise: Volume should decrease, intensity (with recovery) can rise. Muscle preservation is crucial: It drives metabolism and health outcomes more than weight alone. Sleep matters just as much as workouts: It affects hormonal balance, recovery, and fat loss. Cortisol and insulin sensitivity shift in midlife: Long-distance cardio and fasting a tricky combo. Smart scale stats are more telling than BMI: Body composition paints a clearer health picture. Personalized magnesium dosing: May improve sleep and aid recovery in midlife. To help us unpack all the research and studies we have Dr. Stengler joining us today. In addition to authoring 30 books on health and several best-sellers such as “The Natural Physician's Healing Therapies,” “Prescription for Natural Cures,” “Prescription for Drug Alternatives,” and “Outside the Box Cancer Therapies,” Dr. Stengler has been published in several peer-reviewed medical journals such as The International Journal of Family & Community Medicine, Endocrinology & Metabolism International Journal, and Journal of Nutritional Health & Food Engineering. The newest book is called, The Holistic Guide to Gut Health. A comprehensive yet accessible approach to healing leaky gut and the many uncomfortable symptoms it causes. Dr Stengler is also the founder of The Stengler Center for Integrative Medicine.Talking Points:Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), is a naturally occurring fatty acid derivative made in the body and found in small amounts in foods. Several human studies have demonstrated that PEA has broad-spectrum pain-relieving properties, anti-inflammatory effects, and nerve protection.PEA was first discovered in 1957 by scientists at Merck Sharp & Dohme, who isolated it from egg yolk, peanut meal, and soy lecithin. They found that PEA had anti-inflammatory properties in guinea pigs. However, PEA's role as a potential therapeutic agent was not widely recognized until 1993, when Rita Levi-Montalcini and her colleagues published research that suggested PEA has anti-inflammatory properties. Levi-Montalcini's group termed PEA an autocoid local injury antagonist (ALIA), and suggested that it acts locally to counteract injuryMultiple studies have demonstrated that PEA improves all sorts of pain. For example, a 2023 analysis of 11 studies found that PEA improved pain of various conditions, including muscle and joints, nerves, gynecological, and digestive. In terms of joint pain, a high-quality study demonstrated that PEA significantly reduced adult joint pain compared to placebo. Moreover, 8 clinical trials demonstrated that PEA was effective for low back pain, sciatica, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Even migraine headache pain was shown in published research to be improved with PEA.Lipid mediators help to balance the immune, nervous, and endocrine systems, affecting pain pathways related to inflammation. But unfortunately, due to changing diets, many of us do not get the nutrition and activity we need to make enough PEA ourselves.Supplemental PEA, by Levagen+ is properly formulated for optimal bioavailability, 75% more bioavailable to cell receptors than dietary formsLevagen+ liposomal delivery of PEA has been clinically studied and shows benefits in joint pain, nerve pain, migraine, infections, sleep, and cognitive function.Learn more about Emerald Labs PEA+ Levagen Use the code: Forever and get 20% off your order.

Portland. Southeast 4 or 5 increasing 7 or 8 veering South 4 or 5 later. Occasional showers. Good, becoming moderate. The Shipping Forecast marks its centenary on the BBC today. Happy birthday from Radio Lento! ----- Take as a seat one of the large flat stones under a tree. It's a lone tree, full of sparrows. Watch the ocean boats. The high tide is on the turn. Shallow waves rolling about between the rocks. They're playing that game of colouring in. Darkening the boulders to show where they've been. Surge, break, wash, dissolve. Rest both hands on the sun-warm stone. Follow the ships and boats as they sail the shipping channel. Marine engines are felt as much in the chest as in the ears. Slowly each slides from view. Keep still though, so as not to frighten the sparrows. Sparrows, and softly breaking waves, and humming boats, and time in a coastal edgeland space, and no interruptions, might be good for a bit of thinking. That kind of thinking best done without notes. Without words or screens, prompts or lists. And without talking. Flow time thinking where thoughts and ideas and worries and inspirations surge, and break, and wash, and dissolve, just like the waves. * Happy New Year! Episode 251 is our first for 2025.

Turn right off the towpath beside the Military Canal, cross the footbridge, locate the stile that leads onto the hill, then follow the rough footpath up into some impressive edgeland. It's rough. Grassy. Very thistly. And as you ascend it feels hard. Increasingly wild. It's somewhere up here, we say, striding firm against the gradient. But the thing's not marked on the map. The Sound Mirror of Hythe is a large concrete parabolic dish. A giant ear, pointed out to sea, designed a hundred years ago, pre-RADAR for the early detection of incoming aircraft. Surely, we puff, a structure like this must stand out like a sore thumb? Well no. The steep ground has twists and folds. Ridges and bends that have to be walked. And no military installation worth its salt, however obsolete, is or should ever be easy to find. We eventually see huddled low in the grass a squat blockhouse. A derelict radio receiving station, according to one historical website. Then we see the dish itself. A concrete shape, nestled against a steep bank, sadly now in a terrible state, trees growing up through its collapsing sections. Up close the dish is behind substantial chainwire fencing and surrounded by what amounts to a moat of evil shoulder high stinging nettles. Whatever evidence there may be of the 'listening chamber' said to reside at the foot of the structure, is not possible to see. It may indeed be buried under broken concrete. We stood for a long time. Taking it all in. Despite its state, this dish is still active. Still reflecting and to some extent shaping the aural soundscape around it. Of course only from the listening chamber could one be an ear witness to what this structure was properly designed to do, but knowing that on some level it is still working, still channeling the soundscape from the sky above the sea, is, in a quiet way, thrilling. We found some shelter for the Lento box behind the radio receiving station, angling its view up the hill to capture both the near and far soundscapes. Near, wild wind whips through the edgeland grasses, a few crickets are cricketing. Mid-distance left, the sound mirror, about 40 yards. You can hear the wind when it catches in the trees growing in and around the dish and sometimes a yellowhammer. Right of scene is the hill rolling down into the valley. At the bottom the military canal. What filters in from behind the Lento box is from the coast and the ocean view. Toot toot of the steam railway that runs from Hythe, Dymchurch, Romney and Dungeness. Occasional distant echoes from circling seagulls and a construction site. Listening back we think some of these sounds at least are being reflected off the dish itself.

Matters Microbial #63: A Symphony of Cyanobacteria October 30, 2024 Today, Dr. Nathan Algren, Associate Professor of Biology at Clark University, joins the #QualityQuorum to discuss the centrality of cyanobacteria to our biosphere, the viruses that prey upon them, and his interests in outreach and science-oriented art. Host: Mark O. Martin Guest: Nathan Ahlgren Subscribe: Apple Podcasts, Spotify Become a patron of Matters Microbial! Links for this episode An overview of the cyanobacteria. An overview of Prochlorococcus. An overview of marine bacteriophages. The Great Oxidation Event Cyanobacteria are thought to have radically changed our planet 2.5-3.5 billion years ago by producing oxygen through photosynthesis. In essence, they and other microbes are the original terraformers. The Purple Earth Hypothesis Photosynthesis as we know it, using chlorophyll, may have evolved after another way of doing photosynthesis, with retinal that looks purple. This means that our planets and other ‘younger' planets may look or have looked purple rather than green. Self-assembly of viral capsids, as modeled by 3D-printed parts (Art Olson) TED talk from Penny Chisholm on Prochlorococcus Co-occurring Synechococcus ecotypes occupy four major oceanic regimes defined by temperature, macronutrients and iron Study showing how different populations of Synechococcus occupy different niches and regions of the oceans according to their adaptations to temperature and nutrients. Viral treadmills in the ocean—running to stand still Companion ‘behind the paper' article. Diverse Marine T4-like Cyanophage Communities Are Primarily Comprised of Low-Abundance Species Including Species with Distinct Seasonal, Persistent, Occasional, or Sporadic Dynamics Paper showing cyanophage ‘species' have different time patterns in the oceans. The emergence of resistance hosts and phage that overcome them demonstrate the principles of the Red Queen hypothesis and phage-host ‘arms race'. Present and future global distributions of the marine Cyanobacteria Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus Figure from this paper is in the presentation. Hi everyone.I run a lot of workshops within organizations. They're great for connecting people, allowing space for questions, and inspiring teams. But here's the thing: I'm not convinced they're the best method of training staff in most cases.Don't get me wrong, workshops have their place and I enjoy running them. They create a shared learning environment, foster discussion, and can be incredibly motivating. However, they come with some significant drawbacks that we need to address.Key Challenges with WorkshopsFirst, let's consider the retention problem. Unless people immediately apply what they've learned in a workshop, they tend to forget it. Even if they do use the information right away, without regular application, that knowledge fades over time. It's just how our brains work. Then there's the issue of staff turnover. When employees who attended a workshop leave, they take that knowledge with them. New hires miss out unless you repeat the workshop, which can be expensive and logistically challenging.Speaking of logistics, getting everyone in the same place at the same time is always a headache. There's always someone on vacation, out sick, or unable to attend for various reasons. This leads to knowledge gaps within teams.Workshops also tend to be one-size-fits-all solutions, which is problematic when you have attendees with varying levels of experience. Some people might be bored, while others struggle to keep up.Lastly, workshops require intense concentration, which can be exhausting for participants. By the end of a long session, people's attention spans are stretched thin, and their ability to absorb information diminishes. The Alternative: Self-Learning ResourcesSo, what's the alternative? I'm a strong advocate for self-learning resources broken down into small, focused lessons. These could teach specific skills like "how to run a 5-second test" or "how to edit a page on the CMS." I find this approach far more effective when I implement them in organizations. These resources could take various forms: short videos, step-by-step written instructions, or even checklists. Some content could be universal and purchased off-the-shelf (like "writing for the web"), while other material would need to be custom-made for your organization.Imagine organizing all of this in a UX playbook alongside policies, procedures, standards, and more general educational content like "why accessibility matters." You could even integrate these resources directly into your tools. For example, embedding how-to guides within your CMS so people can access instructions right when they need them.Speaking of playbooks, if you're an agency owner or freelancer, I've created one just for you! It includes easy-to-follow guides, client education materials, and tools to help simplify your web design projects. Check it out here.Benefits of Self-Learning ResourcesI've found that self-learning resources offer numerous benefits for organizations:Consistent knowledge base: Everyone accesses the same information, ensuring standardized knowledge across the organization, regardless of when they joined.Self-paced learning: Staff can engage with material when it's most relevant and revisit as needed, accommodating different learning styles and schedules.Always available: No waiting for the next workshop to learn crucial skills. This immediate access can significantly reduce downtime and boost productivity.Scalable: Once created, these resources can be used by unlimited employees across various departments and locations.Cost-effective: After the initial investment, ongoing costs are minimal compared to repeated workshops, offering a high return on investment over time.Flexible: Easy to update and expand as processes and technologies evolve, ensuring learning materials remain current and relevant.Personalized learning: Employees can focus on areas most relevant to their roles or skill gaps, creating a more tailored experience.Measurable results: Digital learning resources often include analytics, allowing you to track engagement and assess training effectiveness.Continuous learning culture: Readily available resources encourage employees to take ownership of their professional development, fostering a growth mindset.Remote team support: Self-learning resources are particularly valuable for organizations with remote workers or multiple office locations, ensuring consistent training regardless of physical location.Finding the Right BalanceDon't get me wrong – I'm not saying we should completely do away with workshops. They still have value, especially for team building, brainstorming, and tackling complex problems that benefit from group discussion. But they shouldn't be your only, or even primary, method of training and knowledge sharing.By investing in a robust set of self-learning materials, you're not just training your current staff – you're building a knowledge infrastructure that will serve your organization for years to come. It's about creating a culture of continuous learning, where employees are empowered to seek out information and improve their skills on an ongoing basis.Moving ForwardSo, the next time you're tempted to schedule another workshop, ask yourself: Is this the most effective way to share this knowledge? Or could you create a resource that will have a more lasting impact?
On this episode we hear from Seema. She knew that she was always going to be very liberal about her career choices and she wanted to be in the commercial realm of different industries. She started in FMCG, then banking before coming into her forever home of hospitality. She has several mentors who have inspired her hospitality career journey and helped shape the course of her life. She has an interesting take in her our leadership and has identified individuals she calls 'silent achievers'. People who are doing exceptional work and perhaps not getting the recognition that they need. For herself at a very young age, even as an introvert, she recognised that you had to take action, or you will be left behind. One of her learnings that really resonated with me was 'I will always live in this state of displacement.' At the end she turned the mic on me and asked me questions, where we spoke about #womensupportingwomen, safe space and including men in the conversation. I thought she did a great job with her questions, and I know she will be great when she released her own podcast - 'Anatomy of a Friendship'. You heard it here first!

It's not uncommon to hear ringing, buzzing, humming or hissing sounds that can't be heard by anyone else. The medical term for these symptoms is tinnitus. The sounds may affect both ears, or just one. If you're lucky, they're a temporary or intermittent problem, but for some people they can be more severe, affecting their daily lives. 2019 figures from the British Tinnitus Association suggested that persistent tinnitus affects 1 in 8 people. Occasional ringing in the ears is nothing to worry about. It's when it lasts for longer than a few minutes that you may wish to consult a GP. Bear in mind that tinnitus itself isn't actually a disease. The sounds are symptoms of other disorders and health conditions. Where does it come from? Does it get worse with age? This season, every episode of OMG focuses on a question that directors really need to answer. OMG is written, produced, narrated and scored by Matt Fullbrook. TRANSCRIPT: Question #28: How many of us would benefit from an occasional change in scenery? In episodes 192 and 193 of OMG I talked about the importance of breaks and physical movement. These are not trivial nice to haves – they are critical to making sure that people are cognitively engaged and comfortable – both of which we can all agree are important to board effectiveness. Speaking of trivial, it's maybe a bit too easy to trivialize breaks and think of them just in terms of gaps in our agendas for people to do with what they please. Mostly to grab a coffee and get caught up on email for 15 minutes. But we all know that that's no break at all. It's like if I giftwrapped your overflowing work phone and presented it to you like the greatest gift in the world. No, breaks are different from simple agenda items. If you could design the ideal break – one with no constraints, anything is on the table – what would it look like? We might all come up with something different, but I suspect almost everyone's dream break would include a change in scenery. Maybe you're out on a walk or sitting on the beach or up on a roof or on your bike or whatever. And the thing about a change in scenery is that you don't even need a break to get it done. Episode 469: Let's face facts. After 28 games it is becoming clear that NYCFC under Nick Cushing is a mediocre team. The Bible makes it clear that we're saved by grace through faith. It's not of works, but a free gift. But does that mean the believer is free to sin continually or even occasionally? Let's talk about it today on a Daily Walk as we finish up Romans chapter six. Pastor John Randall will provide compelling reasons why the Christian should not make plans to sin occasionally. We're going through Romans with pastor John Randall. We've learned previously in this epistle that we're saved by grace, and God will forgive us no matter what we've done if we'll turn to Him in faith. But does that mean, once we become saved, that we can continue in a lifestyle of sin? Is it ok to willingly engage in sin occasionally, knowing that forgiveness will be offered? The apostle Paul answers that for us in Romans chapter six. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/1368/29

Dr. Dunning is a fearless researcher currently deeply involved in understanding the biochemical and structural relationships inside the human body to prevent illness, slow senescence and regenerate tissue with existing body systems that have not been used to their fullest. He studies life extension. Currently he's writing his third book on the subject of life extension that looks at the intimate relationship of Iron overloading in the mitochondrial matrix and copper deficiency that exacerbates that relationship. It is evident that diet is a keystone in that arch and the correct human diet is animal based. He believes that what goes on between the mouth and the mitochondrial membrane determines our victory in maintaining health. He follows Mark Twain's thinking about the scientific method in that "I was educated once; it took me years to get over it." Skepticism is the key to learning in his view. His expertise is in regenerative medicine practicing a Hippocratic method; employing food, or restricting food to improve mitochondrial health and ATP output. He is also a promoter of animal products as an optimal food source based on our early development as large brained hominids from the adoption of eating bone marrow and meat scraps from large predator kills 4 million years ago. He is the author of two books, one on dry fasting called "The Phoenix Protocol" and one on exercise for preventing sarcopenia and osteopenia titled "Neogenesis." I had scheduled this for the U.S. July 4th holiday tomorrow, but I'm second-guessing that now and pressing send with unrestricted access. Perhaps this can offer some counter-programming to the sometimes overbearing or militant sounds of fireworks, or be a balm to those who are traveling and might feel unsettled right now.Why not make it a two-fer? I also just shared a spacious dawn chorus soundscape field recording I made recently at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. For the next four installments of Soundwalk we are traveling to Texas in the springtime. After several soundwalks with sparse birdsong, I'm ready for migration sounds. How about you?Texas hill country in springtime is pretty great. The morning air is mild and sweet. The birdsong is exotic to my western North American ears. Flowers are in bloom. I get the draw. I wasn't missing cold, rainy Oregon that morning.Barton Creek Greenbelt is in the inner rings of southeast Austin, TX, but it feels like a world apart from the city. Sure there's the hum of the highway that's not far off, but it's pretty easy to tune out, and in some reaches of the canyon, altogether missing.I visited April 4th. There was no water in the creek bed due to ongoing drought conditions, but the shrubs and grasses were spring green amongst the canopy dominated by live Oak. The lack of water in the soundscape gave the bird and insect sounds more presence. For a lot of songbirds in North America there are western and eastern analogues. Eastern Wood-Pewee: Western Wood Pewee, Carolina Chickadee: Black-capped Chickadee, Carolina Wren: Bewick's Wren. What the west does not have is its own version of the Northern Cardinal. (We also don't get Grackles and lots of other widespread eastern birds.) The Northern Cardinal is just such a superstar of the bird world. It's a noteworthy absence. The closest thing we have to the Cardinal might be the Lazuli Bunting, a distant cousin in the cardinalae family. Like the Northern Cardinal, the male is painted vibrantly. Instead of crimson, it has a sky-blue hood that dazzles the eye. But it's not really a backyard bird, so it's observed less frequently. Furthermore, its repertoire of songs and calls is limited in comparison, and a bit busy-sounding. There's a lot going on in this soundscape, but the Northern Cardinal, I would say, is really the star of the show with its sweet cheer, cheer, cheer and birdie, birdie, birdie layering on from many coordinates. My instrumental score is dominated by a Wurlitzer electric piano, leaving room for the avian frequencies throughout. Gauzy strings and synth layers sweep in and out with watercolor broad-strokes. Occasional glockenspiel and zither offer some filigree. It's a good introduction for what's to come, and brings me joy to share it with you! Thanks for reading and listening!Barton Creek Soundwalk is available on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple, Tidal, Amazon, YouTube…) Friday, July 5th. This is a public episode. The Occasional Human Sacrifice: Medical Experimentation and the Price of Saying No (Norton, 2024) is an intellectual inquiry into the moral struggle that whistleblowers face, and why it is not the kind of struggle that most people imagine. Carl Elliott is a bioethicist at the University of Minnesota who was trained in medicine as well as philosophy. For many years he fought for an external inquiry into a psychiatric research study at his own university in which an especially vulnerable patient lost his life. Elliott's efforts alienated friends and colleagues. The university stonewalled him and denied wrongdoing until a state investigation finally vindicated his claims. His experience frames the six stories in this book of medical research in which patients were deceived into participating in experimental programs they did not understand, many of which had astonishing and well-concealed mortality rates. Beginning with the public health worker who exposed the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and ending with the four physicians who in 2016 blew the whistle on lethal synthetic trachea transplants at the Karolinska Institute, Elliott tells the extraordinary stories of insiders who spoke out against such abuses, and often paid a terrible price for doing the right thing. The New York Times recently hailed Graza's “sizzle” variety as “the best all around olive oil that you can buy in a store.” It's the latest high-profile praise for the brand, which launched in 2022 and is beloved for its chef-inspired, squeezable green bottles. While acclaim for Graza has become commonplace, its popularity among influencers has led some to mock it as “the Instagram olive oil.” Occasional derision, however, is fine with co-founder and CEO Andrew Benin. Being aligned with one of the world's most popular social media platforms is a good thing, he says, and should be celebrated. Since its debut, Graza, which markets extra virgin olive oil sold in “sizzle” and “drizzle” varieties, has been a constant presence in the pantries and kitchens of Instagram, YouTube and TikTok influencers. Virality has helped the brand generate millions of dollars in direct-to-consumer sales and supported its presence at national retailers, including Whole Foods, Target and Walmart. According to a recent CNBC report, Graza expects to bring in over $48 million in gross sales by the end of 2024. We sat down with Andrew for a conversation about how Graza has inspired authentic and fervent enthusiasm for its products on social media, how the company has maintained relationships with influencers “at scale” and how taking a bet on the upside has guided its demand planning strategy. He also explains why he describes Graza as an “early team-led company” versus a founder-led one and shares his nuanced perspective on profitability. Show notes: 0:35: Interview: Andrew Benin, Co-Founder & CEO, Graza —Andrew and Taste Radio editor Ray Latif recall their first conversation as part of an episode of BevNET & NOSH's Elevator Talk and discuss The New York Times' coverage of Graza. Andrew talks about the impact of creating a “memorable action,” how his lightbulb moment occurred in the shower, why he describes working for other entrepreneurs as part appreciation and part envy, and why he views Graza as a “best supporting actor.” He also explains why social media needs to be “a part of your brand's DNA at inception, how the company's social media strategy and team have evolved, the importance of hiring people that are motivated and nimble, why the development of Graza's refill cans addressed several consumer and operational challenges, and his belief that “ you shouldn't get too much credit for being profitable and not knocked for being unprofitable.” Brands in this episode: Graza, Dr. Bronner's, Magic Spoon
[Original airdate: 7/17/23] Occasional podcast Crash Connell and Scott Schara discussed an update regarding the July 14 (2023) hearing on Grace's lawsuit. We also discussed the medical industrial complex's grip on the population. Medical malpractice was the third leading cause of death, before Covid. Covid woke us up to a much darker agenda. In that light, we discussed Obamacare's provision authorizing mercy killing, euthanasia, and assisted suicide and how the ending of the Public Health Emergency, related to Covid, has mutated into something worse. Finally, we discussed Informed Consent, and how Informed Consent is the tool to become intimately familiar with in order to protect yourself in any medical setting. Remember, our enemy is Satan; not the doctors and nurses. Ephesians 6:12: For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
