Fear is everywhere—on the news, in our homes, and in our hearts. But what if God sees more in you than you see in yourself? In this message, we dive into Gideon's story to see how God takes ordinary, uncertain people and turns worriers into warriors.
Andy, Jörg and Leah talk through our response to preparations for war, where the only people calling for peace seem to be doing it insincerely. How can we respond to Jesus' words about turning the other cheek and loving our enemies when we feel the need to be protected? Do we abandon these ideas as irrelevant? Do we sacrifice the safety of our fellow-people to make a point? Contact us on justiceworriers@artificialworlds.net or look for JusticeWorriers on Mastodon, Facebook, LinkedIn, or YouTube. The relationship metaphor, a bridge period, and the point of entry. Justin Sullivan (Nightshop, Flatworms, The Babies) Night Shop "The Beloved Returns" LP- https://www.salinasrecords.com/products "Night Shop is the songwriting project of Justin Sullivan. Sullivan has worked as a touring drummer for the past twenty years with a half dozen DIY punk bands, including Ringers and an early incarnation of Worriers. In 2009, he joined The Babies alongside Kevin Morby and Cassie Ramone. When the band went on hiatus in 2013, Sullivan moved to Los Angeles with Morby and continued working with him as a staple of the live band and playing on all of Morby's studio albums. In the meantime, Sullivan also formed the fuzz punk outfit Flat Worms, with Tim Hellman of Oh Sees and Will Ivy. But in the middle of a tour in August of 2016, Sullivan realized the rigors of the road had grown to be too much. He made the decision to take a full calendar year away from touring and focus, for the first time, on writing his own music. Like most of Sullivan's projects, the album is a family affair. His former touring and recording partner in the Kevin Morby band, Meg Duffy (Hand Habits) plays bass on several of the songs and sings backup vocals on a few as well. Flat Worms cohort Will Ivy plays lead guitar on some, while Mare labelmate and soon-to-be touring partner Anna St. Louis sings backup on two songs. The album was engineered by Jarvis Taveniere of Woods and mixed by Drew Fischer who previously worked with Sullivan on Morby's first two records and The Babies second album Our House On The Hill. “For the past twenty years, Justin has been guided by music, moving through the world one song at at time. No matter the project, he has always been seen less as a drummer and more as the yin to the songwriters yang, with his defined ability to help craft a song into exactly what it should be. He is a secret weapon – the thread that runs through many people's favorite records. And so it is here that he steps out from behind his kit for the first time and to stage center as Night Shop. When I think about this record, a lyric from “A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall,” comes to mind. It's the line where Dylan sings, “I'll know my song, well before I starting singing.” In The Break is the product of someone who has had a lot to say and has waited for the perfect moment to say it.” -Kevin Morby" Excerpt from https://woodsist.com/product/night-shop-in-the-break-lp/ Nightshop: Bandcamp: https://nightshop.bandcamp.com Instagram: @nightshopband Website: https://www.nightshopband.com Records: https://www.salinasrecords.com/products Merch: https://nightshop.bandcamp.com/merch Flatworms: Bandcamp: https://flatwormsmusic.bandcamp.com Instagram: @flatwormsband Records: https://www.dragcity.com/artists/flat-worms Merch: https://www.merchbar.com/rock-alternative/flat-worms The Babies: Instagram: @thebabiesforever Records: https://kevinmorby.merchtable.com/the-babies/? #500 Camel Hit and Run - Richard has been living the showbiz lifestyle that should be his daily existence, but now he's landed up in Chorley. His guest is award winning stand up and MC Hayley Ellis. They chat about Hayley becoming a mum after an unplanned pregnancy, the hilarious story of attempting to buy a pillow with a picture of her dead grandma on it, whether we need bad people to get us through certain circumstances, her podcast “The Worriers” and why it's good to talk about mental health in a comedic way, what it takes to be a great MC and why stand up is easier than being a teacher's assistant and whether Sarah Millican is the monster to work with that Richard suspects her to be. Health scares have a way of prioritizing things. For Lauren Denitzio, undergoing heart surgery at the young age of 25 brought one key priority into sharp focus: music. Since then, the musician has approached their creative venue Worriers as a form of pure expression, both musically and emotion. The band's earnest, joyful music has earned it a place in the world of punk, including an upcoming tour opening for Alkaline Trio. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Election Day may be tomorrow, but I'll share my winners and losers of the past few days in the sports world as the most recent edition of the podcast is here. On deck: (2:41) NFL Week 9 was a wild one, especially when it comes to teams who I thought were making the turn for the better (i.e. Miami, Seattle & Dallas). They were unable to show and prove by winning a big game on the road, which they have not done to date. Will this cost them come January? The Baltimore Ravens have been building a case as one of the top teams in the AFC. Despite their style of play offensively, this is a front running team that does not play well from behind. I'll explain. Plus, Texans QB, CJ Stroud's historic game vs. Tampa Bay. Antonio Pierce's affect on the Raiders as he coached his first game (and won vs. his former team that he played for i.e. Giants). Are the Steelers doing it with smoke and mirrors? I'll have all of what took place yesterday as we slowly, but surely get over the halfway point of the season. (31:44) College football was pretty much status quo when it comes to the top teams in the country, although Texas had to sweat out an overtime victory against Kansas St. Washington outlasted USC on the road. Missouri gave Georgia all they could handle, but came up short in Athens as I'm sure the playoff picture will shift over the course of the next month. (36:24) The Association has seen an early signature game in the young career of Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama as he put up 38 points & 10 rebounds in a win vs. the Suns last week. As of this moment, there are only two things that can slow or stop him from being an all-time great. And what about the colors on the courts as the NBA in-season tournament begun on Friday night. Don't adjust your TV sets with all of the blues and reds that are coming through loud in high definition. (43:01) Are the NHL's San Jose Sharks on the verge of being the worst regular season team in league history? They're sure off to that type of start, going 0-10-1, losing their last two games by the score of 20-3 and have been outscored 55-12 to date. I know it's early, but it's sure looking like that will be the case. I'll take a trip around the ice to see how the Bruins and Golden Knights finally lost their first game of the year. Is Oilers coach, Jay Woodcroft on the hot seat as his team has won two of its first ten? While it's an undeniable fact that most musicians have ska roots, Tom May of The Menzingers has an entire, elaborate ska past. Before forming The Menzingers in 2006, Tom spent a solid 4 years playing in the Scranton, Pennsylvania ska band Bob and the Sagets. During the early 2000s, Bob and the Sagets (and another band, Lester) were the big local ska bands in Scranton. Tom speaks to us this week about Bob and the Sagets. We talk about the Scranton scene, including venues like Cafe Del Sol and Sessions Skatepark, as well as other prominent bands from the scene (Including Tigers Jaw!). But we also discuss The Menzingers and search for signs of ska, which includes a cover of The Specials' "Gangsters" they used to do, an old song called "Dark Side Of The Poon," and Tom joining Worriers on stage to play ska guitar for their cover of Rancid's "Old Friend." We also talk about playing with ska/reggae producer Curtis Irie (ie Irie Idea), how Against Me influenced The Menzingers' sound, touring with Jeff Rosenstock, meeting Brendan Kelly for the first time at Fest, his feelings on The Hard Times' Menzingers articles and getting to see Catbite for the first semi-recently. Plus he talks about some of the most amazing DIY shows he's seen back in the day, including Frank Turner, Gaslight Anthem and Paint It Black. And, as a special treat, Tom explains to us what the Receipt Scam is! Support the show
On episode 253 of You, Me, Empathy, Lauren Denitzio (they/them) and I gab about shaking the Etch A Sketch of our lives, how Lauren sparks creativity and hope (and snark) in a world that sometimes feels like a hellscape, toxic positivity and the privilege of being disengaged from the stuff that might make us uncomfortable (e.g. politics, racism, our own privilege, bias, and emotions), and why Warm Blanket, the latest album from Lauren's band, Worriers, is different from all the other records they've released. In this episode, Stephen A. and Kendrick Perkins recap a wild weekend in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, including how the injuries of Ja Morant, Paul George, and Giannis could affect their teams' chances at advancing. Plus, KD and the Suns join Steph and the Warriors in the losers' column after Game 1, but how worried should both teams really be? And, which team had the more impressive win: the Celtics or 76ers?
