Wat neemt hij mee aan ervaring en mentaliteit? Welke risico's bedreigen zijn welslagen? Welke pluspunten en waarschuwingen kan hij ontlenen aan zijn voorgangers in het ambt? Zijn politiek bestuurlijk cv is steviger dan dat van zijn voorgangers Jan Peter Balkenende en Mark Rutte bij hun aantreden. Zijn politieke loopbaan heeft hem door alle wateren gewassen. Van triomfen tot fiasco's, van internationale crises tot lef in campagnes en debatten. Zijn pragmatisme, lenigheid en 'Wille zur Macht' kun je maar beter niet onderschatten. Jettens grootste pluspunt bij zijn start is zijn directe voorganger Dick Schoof. In elk opzicht is hij de contrastfiguur tegenover deze ijdele en onhandige ambtenaar op jaren. Al delen ze wel de hardloophobby. Hij is bovendien ook een jeugdig contrast ten opzichte van zijn voorganger als D66-aanvoerder, Sigrid Kaag. Dit zal hem in Europa en de NAVO direct goed van pas komen. Zeker als Bontenbal en Klaver zo verstandig zijn hem in hun Europese families van EVP en S&D een goede, gedegen entree te gunnen. Zulk krediet helpt bij wederzijds vertrouwen. Grote uitdaging zal zijn hoe het hem lukt zijn partij de rol van leidende club in coalitie en Kamer te laten pakken. D66 begon immers als anti-partij tegen het establishment en de polder en verkeerde regelmatig in politieke doodsnood. Jetten zal hier allereerst zelf zijn partij op sleeptouw moeten nemen, geholpen door een krachtige partijvoorzitter en een 'chief whip'. Rolmodellen uit de D66-historie heeft Jetten voor zijn nieuwe functie niet. Voor de cruciale kenmerken van een succesvol premierschap en leiderschap kan hij van voorgangers uit alle politieke tradities veel leren. Soms onverwachte lessen. Verrassen bij je start kan hij afkijken van de liberaal Johan Rudolf Thorbecke en de christendemocraat Ruud Lubbers. Ver vooruit durven kijken kan hij leren van socialist Willem Drees en partijloze premier Pieter Cort van der Linden. Bij Dries van Agt, Balkenende en Rutte kan hij opdoen hoe essentieel het is dat hij snel een maatje vindt op het hoogste niveau in Europa. Wie zal zijn 'Mutti' worden (Angela Merkel voor Rutte)? De extraverte 'Sarko' (Nicolas Sarkozy voor Balkenende)? Of zijn 'Macher’ in de strijd zoals Helmut Schmidt voor Van Agt? Crisisbestendigheid hoeft Jetten niet te leren. Als jong minister werd hij meteen in het diepe gegooid door Poetins oorlog en de gevolgen daarvan voor energie, economie en welvaart. Joop den Uyl, Van Agt en Rutte kan hij als voorbeelden nemen op dat terrein. Zij moesten een oliecrisis, terreuraanslagen en een pandemie het hoofdbieden. Cruciaal is dat burgers in een nieuwe premier merken dat hij geen diva is. Ingetogenheid, toewijding en werklust worden gewaardeerd. Piet de Jong, Lubbers en Drees zijn hier exemplarisch. De eenvoudige humor van De Jong zou voor Jetten een prachtige kers op de taart zijn. Blijf als premier maar liever weg bij klatergoud en 'talkshows'. Vermijd de gêne van 'Ome Joop' in de André van Duin Show of Rutte in VI. Belangrijk zijn de lessen van voorgangers voor twee essentiële relaties. Ten eerste die met het Koningshuis. Drees en Den Uyl laten zien hoe wezenlijk het is respectvol en loyaal te zijn, maar altijd alert dat hún problemen of uitglijers niet de jouwe worden. Lubbers en Balkenende moesten meemaken dat je hier al snel ook zelf in perikelen terecht kunt komen. En op dankbaarheid hoeft een premier nooit te rekenen. De tweede essentiële relatie is die met jezelf. Een premier kan ongemerkt vereenzamen. Thorbecke en Lubbers zijn daar aangrijpende voorbeelden van. Ook voor Jetten zal in dat opzicht de vraag zijn: wie is mijn Jan de Koning? En: verken ik tijdig mijn opvolging? Rutte en Den Uyl zijn daarbij waarschuwingen uit eerdere periodes. Welke risico's zal premier Jetten onder ogen moeten zien? Allereerst die van elke minderheidsconstructie. De maakt immers gedogers oppermachtig. Jetten gaat nu doen wat Pieter Omtzigt wilde. Beseft hij dit? Realiseert hij zich dat Jesse Klaver en Joost Eerdmans - als ze zich goede machiavellisten tonen - elkaar het balletje zullen toespelen om de premier maximaal te laten zweten? In de nieuwe coalitie is één partij Jettens grootste onzekerheidsfactor. Het CDA. De kleinste partij in het verbond staat tegenover een dominant liberaal blok. Bontenbal ziet zichzelf als een winnaar. Die winst zal hij willen verzilveren, ten koste dus van de paars-seculiere ideologie waarin VVD en D66 al eerder hebben samengewerkt. Het CDA kon daarom zich weleens profileren als nadrukkelijk sociale factor tegenover de liberalen en als rem bij al te gretige hervormingen in de medisch-ethische sfeer. Wat is er dit jaar veel om te herinneren en inspiratie aan op te doen! 2026 steekt echt uit boven andere jaren. In geopolitiek, in de nationale politiek, in de cultuur en zeker ook in de Oranjehistorie. Jaap Jansen en PG Kroeger duiken in de historische jaren rond een serie thema's die dit jaar de volle aandacht zullen krijgen. Het is een jaar waarin belangrijke politieke partijen als PvdA en D66 grote jubilea vieren. Maar ook een jaar waarin het Oranjehuis politieke en familiaire crises misschien maar liever niet herdenkt. En op wereldschaal staan de Verenigde Staten in het brandpunt. Daar herdenkt men de oorsprong, het oude ideaal, maar ook de gruwelijkste terreurdaad die deze wereldmacht trof. En in de wereld van de kunsten? Drie vooruitstrevende democratische partijen fuseerden: een bundeling van verschillende tradities en idealen. De nieuwe PvdA ontstond door het samengaan van klassieke marxistische, links-liberale en christendemocratische stromingen. De droom tijdens de bezettingsjaren van maatschappelijke vernieuwing werd concreet vertaald in een poging tot 'doorbraak' uit verstarde politieke en sociaal-culturele verhoudingen. Weg met de oude scheidslijnen van hoog en laag en van zuilen en ideologische tegenstellingen. Maar die doorbraak kwam maar mondjesmaat. “Sterft, gij oude vormen en gedachten” klonk mooi, maar die vormen wilden maar niet sterven. Teleurgestelde liberalen en pacifisten verlieten de nieuwe partij. Zo ontstonden 'afscheuringspartijen' als VVD en PSP. De actualiteit van de PvdA is historisch gezien dus verrassend logisch. Opnieuw ziet men kans om een doorbraak naar verwante idealen en nieuwe generaties te realiseren. De fusiepartij van toen fuseert opnieuw, nu met GroenLinks. 2] 60 jaar D66 In de levendige jaren ’60 werd ‘een krankzinnig avontuur’ aangevangen. Een politieke 'startup' met als gezicht Hans van Mierlo. Een nieuwe partij die eigenlijk teruggreep op die vernieuwingsidealen van 1946. Men wilde af van gezapigheid en verzuiling, het gepolder met sociale partners en het confessionele midden. Nadruk op technocratisch pragmatisme en enthousiasme voor staatkundige vernieuwing. Van Mierlo liet zich meeslepen in de polarisatiedrift van jongeren in de PvdA, de partij waarmee D66 een Progressieve Volkspartij wilde realiseren. Maar uiteindelijk stond Van Mierlo alleen. Zijn opvolger Jan Terlouw liet de partij opnieuw electoraal omhoog klimmen. Maar toen hij koos tegen de PvdA en voor samenwerking met het CDA, wilde de achterban hem niet meer als leider. Pas in 1994 kon met Paars het anti-zuilen ideaal herleven, maar ook toen profiteerden vooral de oude zuilenpartijen VVD en PvdA en herrees uiteindelijk zelfs het CDA. De échte doorbraak kwam toen Alexander Pechtold het aandurfde veel oude 'kroonjuwelen' te dumpen. Heel pragmatisch. Hij hield Rutte II, een kabinet van VVD en PvdA overeind. Net als Van Mierlo ooit, voerde hij 'oppositie vóór het kabinet'. Pechtold profileerde zich ideologisch als bestrijder van radicaal-rechts en maakte D66 weer groot. En hij selecteerde Rob Jetten als het gezicht van een nieuwe generatie en een nieuwe nadrukkelijke ‘midden' versie van D66. Met Jettens premierschap wacht D66 opnieuw een krankzinnig avontuur. 3] Een groot Oranjejaar, hoewel… 70 jaar Greet Hofmans affaire. 60 jaar rellen en rookbom bij het huwelijk van Beatrix met Claus. 50 jaar Lockheed. Elk hiervan zorgde voor een hoop rumoer en soms wanhopige pogingen van de Haagse politiek waar mogelijk afstand te houden van het monarchale gedoe. Zowel Willem Drees als Joop den Uyl benutten het instrument van een ‘Commissie van drie' om zelf de handen schoon te houden en op basis van wijs, onpartijdig advies de Oranjes klem te zetten. In retrospectief valt op dat Greet Hofmans politiek meer impact had dan zij zelf voor mogelijk moet hebben gehouden, ondanks haar 'ingevingen van het hogere'. Want door haar perikelen kwam uiteindelijk de Lockheed-affaire en zonder Lockheed was Dries van Agt geen premier geworden. 4] 25 jaar 9/11 2026 is een historisch jaar voor en in de Verenigde Staten. Na de festiviteiten rond 4 juli zal de aandacht vooral uitgaan naar de herdenking van de aanslagen op 11 september 2001. Ongetwijfeld zullen velen zich bezinnen op de gebeurtenissen en wanhoop van toen en hun nasleep tot de dag van vandaag. Weet jij nog waar je was toen het gebeurde? En hoe zal Donald Trump hiermee om gaan? Zal hij zijn vijand George W Bush een eervolle rol gunnen of de herdenking zien als een kans zijn maatje Rudy Giuliani wit te wassen? 5] 250 Jaar Verenigde Staten Terecht vieren de Amerikanen hun Declaration of Independence. Het is een van de belangrijkste documenten in de historie van het denken over democratie, mensenrechten en vrijheid. Maar deze viering kon ook weleens vol dissonanten zitten. Betrouwbare Bronnen zet dan ook de reeks van reflecties op toen en nu en de vele dimensies en persoonlijkheden rond 4 juli 1776 voort. De president lijkt het vooral te gaan om zijn eigen feestje en obsessies. Zijn beeldentuin. Zijn balzaal en zijn triomfboog. En zou hij weten wie voor de viering van de Centennial van 1876 in Philadelphia maar liefst $ 5000 kreeg voor de compositie van een Triomfmars? 6] 150 jaar Bayreuther Festspiele Dat geld kwam goed van pas, want Richard Wagner was ook in dat jaar platzak. Zijn goednieuwe theater voor zijn eigen opera's en zijn festival om dat in te wijden slokten enorme bedragen op. Artistiek was het een groot succes als evenement voor de jetset, de aristocratie, koningshuizen en moderne kunstenaars en rebelse geesten van die tijd niet minder. Bayreuth liep zo vol, dat Karl Marx geen onderdak meer kon vinden en een kaartje evenmin. Na dit eerste Festival was het dreigend bankroet onthutsend, maar ook geen weg meer terug. Overal ter wereld, tot de dag van vandaag, werd het gekopieerd als nieuw fenomeen van de evenementencultuur. Ook hierin bleek Richard Wagner een ongeëvenaard revolutionair. Zonder hem geen filmfestival in Cannes, Woodstock, Oscars of Pinkpop. Of zoals hij zelf zei tot zijn orkest: "Kinder, macht Neues! Neues! Und abermal Neues!"
