What happens when a Canadian multi-instrumentalist decides to blend jazzy electronic R&B with indie rock? Join us on Lost in Sound as Peter Sagar, better known as HOMESHAKE, takes us through his creative journey, right from the comfort of his Toronto home studio. Discover the intentional shift in his musical style, the influence of his early exposure to jazz, and the nurturing music scene in Edmonton, where he cut his teeth in Mac De Marco's live band, that shaped his unique sound. Peter also shares his candid thoughts on being labeled as "bedroom pop" and how his latest album, "Horsey," marks a significant step in his evolving artistic identity. In our candid chat, Peter reflects on a recent trip to Greece and the historical richness of Athens, emphasizing the need for breaks before the whirlwind of album promotion and touring. We discuss the emotional highs and lows of touring, the peculiar sense of disconnection it brings, and the challenges of maintaining personal connections and mental health on the road. For anyone intrigued by the complexities of a musician's life, Peter's insights offer a raw and intimate perspective.Peter also opens up about the transformative impact of streaming on the music industry and the sense of loss for the pre-digital era's community spirit. He shares his joy of discovering new music that maintains its mystery and magic, and how this influences his own production process. Wrapping up the episode, we chat about the spontaneous and subconscious nature of creating music, the discomfort artists feel with genre labels, and the idea of music ownership once their work enters the public sphere. Join us for a deep and heartfelt conversation with Homeshake that's sure to resonate with music lovers and aspiring artists alike.Horsie and CD Wallet are available to stream and purchase via BandcampTo let us know the artists you'd like to hear, send us an email or even a letter. Eyedress, Homeshake, Na'Kel Smith and María Zardoya discuss the difficulties of re-capturing a moment, pushing everything else away when going through a creative block, and the importance of controlling your own visual identity. Eyedress is a singer, rapper and producer who grew up in the Philippines but moved to the USA with his family at the age of six. He grew up playing in punk bands, before moving back to Manila in 2005, where he formed garage pop band Bee Eyes. Meanwhile, he was pursuing his own project which would eventually become Eyedress, a name he originally came up with for his Twitter account. His music takes inspiration from everything from shoegaze to bedroom-pop, and last year he released his fifth album, FULL TIME LOVER. Canadian musician Peter Sagar, AKA Homeshake, is known for his unique brand of R&B influenced indie-pop. Originally part of Mac DeMarco's touring set-up, he uses synthesizers and drum-machines to accompany his guitar-playing and soft vocals, creating a relaxing, ethereal sound. Na'Kel Smith is a rapper, actor and skater who was originally one of the non-musician members of alternative hip-hop group Odd Future. After debuting with a powerful, emotional verse on Earl Sweatshirt's DNA and teaching himself how to record, engineer, and make beats, he's evolved into an experimental, lo-fi artist who embodies the spirit of DIY music. Puerto Rican singer María Zardoya fronts American indie-pop band The Marías. They create a dreamlike fusion of jazz, psychedelia and funk music, drawing inspiration from the band's diverse musical backgrounds and singing in both English and Spanish. Their debut album Cinema was released in 2021, and they've since gone on to collaborate with the likes of Bad Bunny and Cuco.

Patrick Holland (FKA Project Pablo) is a Montreal based musician and producer who's most recent album ‘You're The Boss' was released in July on Sinderlyn. Patrick sat down with Josh and Austin the day after his Toronto show to discuss transitioning from DJing to playing in a live band, confusing your fanbase, getting his first guitar from HOMESHAKE, playing bass in Tops, the Montreal sound, Orville Peck, Michael Imperioli, TikTok, “Good Cringe”, Jeremy Fragrance, drummers, naughty podcasts, Palm Springs, accumulating gear from people who treat your studio as a storage space, The Beatles, being pro-streaming, paying homage to the Jonah Yano mural in Toronto, music videos, bad album art, “Sexual Kung-Fu Coaches”, cult coffee shops and much more. We had the pleasure of interviewing Patrick Holland over Zoom video.Patrick Holland is no stranger to ghosts. In the last several years, the Montreal-based musician/producer has become accustomed to odd noises, electronics breaking, misplaced items, and, on a recent occasion, a glass shattering spontaneously next to him. Annoying, to be sure, but he's made peace with it; the unknown, after all, is only frightening if we allow it to be. This attitude is at the heart of Holland's new album - addressed in part to an unnamed, pseudo-paranormal “other,” You're The Boss is his first foray into guitar-driven indie pop, full of upbeat reflections on relinquishing control. Like most touring musicians, 2020 found Holland at a crossroads. Known primarily for his electronic releases under aliases such as Project Pablo and Jump Source, he'd spent the last several years traveling the world playing DJ sets and festivals. Behind the scenes, he was also working as a mixing engineer, producer and remixer, lending his technical prowess to TOPS, Cut Copy, Jacques Greene, Homeshake, and more. In the standstill of the early pandemic, uncertainty manifested itself in the “ghost” - an amalgamation of Holland's personal anxieties, the open-endedness of the future, and other unexplained phenomena. Rather than succumb to this doubt, however, Holland befriended it. “You're the boss” became a sort of mantra in this effort, a reminder to surrender control as he dove into unfamiliar terrain. Over a period of several months, Holland wrote and recorded the album in tandem, playing most of the instruments himself as well as writing and singing lyrics for the first time in his recorded work. Despite covering a lot of sonic ground, You're The Boss also sounds remarkably cohesive, a testament to Holland's airtight production and mixing capabilities. There's tension on this record despite its gloss, to be sure - experimenting with lyricism and singing for the first time was an exercise in vulnerability for Holland, and the resulting reflections find him grappling with self-doubt. While it's a stylistic pivot from the house and ambient textures of his prior releases, the keen melodic sensibilities that have always underpinned his music are on full display here. It's ironic, in a way, that an album about relinquishing control would turn out to be such a masterful display of creative faculty. Long-standing fans of Holland's will find this unsurprising. Though it's full of firsts, You're The Boss sounds like the work of an indie artist decades into their career. We want to hear from you! There are some conversations that linger - like a meal that reminds you not only of the food you ate but the people you shared it with, or a fragrance that triggers a memory - I have that with sunscreen it always transports me to being on holiday.I was speaking with an artist friend of mine about our need to be inspired, it's the engine of our creativity. And because of that I like to create moments or find beauty in moments, almost like a well of memory to draw from. And I have some favourite moments: London in the summertime, spending all afternoon in the park with friends, cycling home around 930pm the sky a velvety inky indigo, the breeze rushing passed my ears. The light in Johannesburg before midday, it's a crystalline light, as if to remind you that anything is possible. Coffee first thing in the morning, quiet with my thoughts, being around children who remind me to keep it simple and look for the wonder. What's any of this got to do with today's interview you may ask? Well, everything. Speaking to South African photographer and director Justice Mukheli was for me another one of those moments, of creating memory.I first fell upon Justice's work about 7 years ago through his blog ‘I see a different you' a site dedicated to showing South African youth style through the lens of the people who wore the clothes, a way of reframing a traditional South African narrative. We talk about his journey into photography and directing, about his beautiful, art-filled richly creative childhood, about honouring the legacy of those who paved the way during the apartheid struggle, furthering the next generation of artists, and to put it in Justice's words, art as a way to ‘archive emotion'.As a songwriter, I write from the images I see in my mind until the words and the images weave in and out of each other. Many times during this interview Justice describes an event or a childhood memory that flooded my mind with pictures - there were a number of times during our conversation where I just wanted to stop and reflect on what he said but remembered I was conducting an interview!I know I'm being particularly effusive about this guest, but I found it to be a truly special conversation. I think listening to Justice speak you'll see what I mean.Guest: Justice MukheliTitle: Justice Mukheli - It's an emotional interrogation that's happening inside of meWebsite: https://www.justicemukheli.com/IG: @justicemukheliArtists on his playlist: Melodiesinfonie & Dorj; Homeshake & Justice DerTo support the podcast click here See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Blue Arcade, that's the name, that name again, is Blue Arcade. Today's episode is a chat with Lottie - one half of the group Blue Arcade - and Toby - close friend and fan of the group. This was an interesting look at how the enthusiasm found at the early stages of making music, can often leave you lost for words. But Lottie is very good at describing the music they make in other ways. Plus she, along with her fellow musician Tom, make a most excellent noise, and I am very glad that I got to hear it. You can hear it too, in rough demo form as she described, at -- https://soundcloud.com/blue-arcade -- . And you can see the faces behind the music at -- https://www.instagram.com/bluearcademusic/ -- . Also Lottie seemed very keen to have everyone listen to Homeshake. Cubs win the World Series! Holy cow! I'm going to go yell at some goats. Coupla topical songs, and then a slew of premieres: Swim Team! Dumb! Homeshake! Mega Bog! Japandroids! Gotta say, this is a pretty killer episode.
In Episode 6 we discuss "Respect." What is it? What does it mean? What does it garner? #RESPEITO (Never forget Yaya Dacosta!) YE WHISPER: This week's Kanye Whisper is dedicated to the late, great Muhammad Ali. We breakdown his impact and his intent. HOP TOPICS! - Kanye a.k.a. Thirst Trap Extraordinaire scheduled a 2 AM concert at Webster Hall as if he were an indie artist with about 300 hardcore fans max. Mayhem ensued. Ye was pleased. - Amber Heard is a "she's so swaggy" fav of Morg and Shan and has been for years. We decided to shine some light on her divorce fiasco with Johnny Depp. Is the hussy messy? Sure. Do we love her still? Yes. - Peter Thiel is a rich bitch who may have outdone Angela Kardashian in LEVELS of vindictive pettiness. We approve. - Rest in Power Harambe. - We touch on History's Channel remake of Alex Haley's "Roots." Rock on King Kunta. NEW MUSIC! This week we intro and outro the episode with "Peace b Withchu," a track from the newly released project VZn of NuBlack Music Group. VZn is a 8-track project created by friends of Two Wise Jawns and fellow Cornell alum, Joe Kleanest of Oakland, CA and Bushido of Dallas, TX. Their dynamic neo G-funk styling and textured vocal layering recall influences from Mos Def, HOMESHAKE, Tame Impala, Tyler, The Creator and more.
