Comedian and writer Pope Lonergan performs all over the UK and has had sold-out shows at Vault Festival, Leicester Comedy Festival, Brighton Fringe, Hastings Fringe and the Edinburgh Fringe. They discuss the place of humour in terrible circumstances, how TV portrayals of care homes do not match up to reality, the grim privatised system that isn't good for any of us and why we should care more about the people who care.Buy the book here https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ill-Die-After-Bingo-Assistant/dp/B09V35NNZP/SUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELSee extra content at our WEBSITE Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. Pope Lonergan is a comedian, author and former care home worker who's written a brilliant book, which tells the story of what life in a care home is really like. Here, he chats to Paul about drug addiction, alcoholism, how to tour a comedy show on the care home circuit and exactly how many times he's been glassed. Make sure you subscribe and follow The PudCast and leave a review and you could be mentioned like some cats in this episode. Nice one. Do you want to see Paul on tour? Ian McMillan explores the language, poetry and perceptions of old age with Fleur Adcock who has been writing poetry for seven decades, comedian Pope Lonergan who has written a memoir of his ten years working in a care home, and psychotherapist Jane Campbell who at the age of 80 is publishing her debut collection of short stories this month. And in our Something Old Something New series celebrating 100 years of poetry on the BBC we hear an archive poem from Michael Longley, and a new commission from Rachael Boast, inspired by hearing an 1890 recording of Tennyson reading The Charge of the Light Brigade. Barbara Charone joins Nikki Bedi and Rev. Richard Coles. Barbara has been called the UK's most powerful music PR and has launched the careers of artists including Madonna. She talks about growing up in Chicago, her role in the music industry and also finding time for football. Listener and writer Isabel Wolff got in touch to talk about the day her family saved Harold Wilson from drowning. Labi Siffre shares his Inheritance Tracks: Sail Away by Randy Newman and Il Canto sung by Luciano Pavarotti. Pope Lonergan is a stand-up comedian who spent ten years looking after the elderly. He talks about his experiences as a care worker and why he decided to bring his tour to care homes. Access All Areas by Barbara Charone is out now. Photo credit: Richard Young. Friends, sisters and serial killers all feature in the book choices for this week. Writer and stand-up comedian Athena Kugblenu picks 'My Sister the Serial Killer' by Oyinkan Braithwaite, a darkly comic tale which is as much about sibling rivalry as it is about murder. Nell Dunn's memoir about love and friendship, 'The Muse', is Harriett Gilbert's pick. And Pope Lonergan selects 'African Psycho' by Alain Mabanckou for its challenging portrayal of a frustrated and violent protagonist. Pope Lonergan is a comedian, podcaster and soon to be published writer. A voracious reader, he makes my bookshelf look like a children's library. I came very close to muting him at one stage as his habit of sharing his current reads was contributing to my book habit. We had a chat about the lockdown, free speech, politics, working in care and how he spoke a book deal into existence through his frank and personal comedy. Enjoy! More about Pope: Pope Lonergan is a comedian, writer, Quaker, (recovering) drug addict and creator of ‘The Care Home Tour’ (“The comedians taking slapstick into new territory” ~ The Guardian) and ‘Pope’s Addiction Clinic’ He gigs up and down the UK and has had sold out shows at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Brighton Fringe, Vault Festival, Leicester Comedy Festival and Hastings Fringe. He’s signed a book deal with Penguin (Ebury) for a memoir due out in 2022. Follow him on Twitter: @PopeLonergan

In the first half, Your Gorgeous Hosts take the time for a little check-in to the core assumptions of TF Season Three. How has the ongoing implosion of global markets due to coronavirus proceeded? How competently are given authorities handling this implosion? How many people are going to be thrown into a volcano for the sake of the Olive Garden? Why is it that when you reach terminal velocity after falling off a building, it feels like you aren't moving? In the second half, we are joined by social worker/sci-fi writer Christopher Caldwell-Kelly and social worker/comedian Pope Lonergan to discuss the ongoing crisis in social care in the UK that has been exacerbated by the Coronavirus. Pope Lonergan is a comedian, Quaker, drug addict and creator of ‘Pope’s Addiction Clinic’ (“From fearless and funny to heart-stoppingly raw" Evening Standard) and ‘The Care Home Tour’ (“The comedians taking slapstick into new territory” ~ The Guardian). In our sophomore instalment, Steve sits down with the gloriously unpredictable, loveably frayed-round-the-edges, sometimes frankly terrifying comedian Pope Lonergan. With swords and cricket bats brandished, they embark on a perilous quest to discover the darker side of virtue, braving all manner of monsters, nightmares and riddles along the way. Is it possible to love someone by saving them? Who's going to save them from you? And why is that tugboat speaking in a Welsh accent? Pope is a London-based comedian known for his provocative, brutally candid material. His show "Pope's Addiction Clinic" just finished a sold-out run at London's VAULT Festival and will be heading to Brighton and Edinburgh Fringes in 2019.
