Who knew? From there, we dive into:.- What a “wallet” actually means (spoiler: it's not just a pretty UI on top of your bank account).- How Vipps MobilePay ended up with 12.5 million users across the Nordics.- The surprisingly brutal reality of merging two platforms (hint: stop doing “fun stuff” for a year).- Why Danes thought that the new app was worse and why that might just be human nature.- The economics of payments (or lack thereof), including why tapping your phone isn't exactly a goldmine in itselfWe also get into the juicy stuff:.- NFC and the battle with Apple (and how Vipps became the first to break into iPhone tap-to-pay outside Apple Wallet).- Why they're not trying to convert Apple Pay users but instead going after your mom who still taps plastic.- The subtle art of turning a payments app into something closer to a “lifestyle platform” (super app, but we're not calling it that… yet)And of course, no Fintech Daydreaming episode would be complete without:.- A deeply philosophical discussion on whether the digital euro is a “solution looking for a problem” or a “problem looking for a solution”.- A buffet of topics we didn't have time for (interoperability, we're coming back for you)Oh - and the jokes. They're bad. Impressively bad. It's Tuesday, April 14th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson and Timothy Reed Actor John Cleese speaks up against Nigerian Christian genocide TruthNigeria's verified civilian deaths for Easter weekend stands at 55 people — a terrible tragedy for the nation. Nigeria remains, by far, the most deadly nation in the world for those who have received the Christian faith. John Cleese, the well-known “Monty Python" comic actor, expressed concern about the massacres of Christians in Nigeria.  On the X platform, he wrote, “It looks rather as though Black Lives Don't Matter.” Writing about [the Nigerian massacres], he said, “Could damage the image of the murderers who killed these poor people.” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán defeated Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán suffered a massive defeat in the elections on Sunday night. Orbán lost to opposition candidate Péter Magyar by a vote of 53% to 39%. Magyar's party, the Respect and Freedom Party, is also on track to gain a supermajority in the Hungarian Parliament.  Magyar broke from Orban's party after multiple scandals surfaced, one of which involved a coverup for a pedophile. Daniel 2:21 speaks of the sovereignty of God over the nations. It says, “And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.” Earlier this year, Hungarian prosecutors indicted the mayor of Budapest for organizing a homosexual pride event last June, attended by over 100,000 people. Gergely Karácsony defied a ban imposed by Viktor Orban's government. United State to block Strait of Hormuz The United States is set to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, reports NBC News. This comes as an unsteady ceasefire has settled over the region and oil prices continue to rise.  President Donald Trump told Fox News that the blockade would not affect talks with Iran. TRUMP: “They haven't left the bargaining table. I predict they come back and they give us everything we want. And I told my people, ‘I want everything. I don't want 90% I don't want 95%.' I told them, ‘I want everything.'” Vice President Vance: Iran better not build a nuclear weapon Vice President J.D. Vance, who recently returned from peace talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, reaffirmed the United States' commitment to making sure Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapon. VANCE: “The simple fact is that we need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon, and they will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon.” 60% of Americans view Israel unfavorably now American's attitude towards the nation of Israel  is shifting.   A recent Pew Research survey found that the percentage of Americans viewing Israel unfavorably has increased from 42% in 2022 to 60% most recently.  And that represents a 6% uptick from last year's survey. Now, 41% of Republicans and 80% of Democrats view Israel unfavorably. And 70% of U.S. adults under age 50 have an unfavorable view of Israel as well, according to the survey. This may be due in part to the shrinkage of the white Evangelical base in America — dropping off from 23% to roughly 14% of the population since the year 2000.  California gubernatorial candidate ends campaign over sexual misconduct California gubernatorial candidate Eric Swalwell terminated his campaign after being accused of sexual misconduct by several women, reports The Western Journal. Swalwell, who currently serves in the US House of Representatives, was pressured by fellow Democrats to leave the race, and also saw his own staffers quit.  On X, Swalwell posted, “To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I've made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that's my fight, not a campaign's.”  He also said this in a video. Listen. SWALWELL: “I do not suggest to you in any way that I'm perfect or that I'm a saint. I have certainly made mistakes in judgment in my past, but those mistakes are between me and my wife. And to her, I apologize deeply for putting her in this position. I also apologize to you if in any way you have doubted your support for me, but I think you know who I am.” However, last night, the alleged reprobate announced plans to resign from Congress altogether.  In related news, liberal Republican Congressman Tony Gonzales of Texas, who sexually harassed at least two of his staffers, also announced he will resign, reports the San Antonio Express-News. America's housing market in trouble The U.S. housing market suffered a bad month-on-month drop in sales of existing homes in March.   This marks the longest bad run on housing sales in at least 25 years, going on four years now. Americans spend 50% more time on phones today than 2022 Consumer Affairs reports that the average American checks their phones 205 times a day. They are on their phones for four hours and 30 minutes a day, up 50% since 2022. And this is new. Consumers are now using the Pet Phone to stay in touch with their pets, mind you, throughout the day, complete with two-way video calling and an Artificial Intelligence motion detector that gets the pet in touch with his owner. “A Great Awakening” Christian film already seen by 500,000 Americans And finally, George Whitefield set America aflame with righteousness in the 1740s. Charles Spurgeon wrote that “Whitefield stands unrivalled among preachers of the Gospel.  … No other man seems to have wielded such a mighty influence over so many hearts.” Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones called him “the greatest English preacher of all time.” These were days of Acts 4:31: “And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.” And now, Sight and Sound films production, A Great Awakening, has taken in $4.9 million at the U.S. box office.  The story of the great evangelist, George Whitefield, and his outreach to Benjamin Franklin, has now been seen by about 500,000 Americans. Impressively, it has a 97% audience approval rating and a 69% approval rating from the Rotten Tomatoes Tomato-meter.   The film is still showing in about 1,000 theaters across America this week. We start a brand new mini-series this week examining a handful of Stephen King adaptations which were all released last year. The first of these is also one of the most unconventional. Directed by Osgood Perkins, THE MONKEY takes a King short story about fate and recurring trauma and turns it into an absurdist dark comedy about death. Impressively well-made and often disarmingly humorous, The Monkey deftly executes outlandish destruction but struggles to balance the tone of its looney toons death sequences with its occasional stabs at earnestness. But in the end, like life, it seems to be admitting that fate not only sits beyond our control, but perhaps also beyond our conception of control. We're joined by bestselling author and friend of the show Matt Ruff to unpack all of our thoughts on Osgood Perkins' The Monkey in this brisk and fun episode that we really hope you enjoy.5:34 - Catching up with Matt Ruff18:27 - THE MONKEYSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It's Tuesday, March 24th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson and Timothy Reed Nigerian Muslims chained 14-year-old Christian girl to tree for 138 days Radical Muslims are killing Nigerian Christians at a rate of 32 people per day, or 12,000 per year, according to the most recent data. About the same average number are being kidnapped. The stories are the most brutal in recorded history.   Truth Nigeria tells of a 14-year-old Christian girl named Eunice who was cruelly chained in the forest for 138 days, beaten daily, and starved.  She witnessed captives murdered and raped. Eunice's mother, Martha, was also held by the criminal group. She told TruthNigeria, “Whenever we tried to pray, they beat us harder and shouted that there is no Christian God.” This was one of 50 taped interviews. Tragically, the Nigerian government has registered zero interest in these criminal activities. The young woman and her mother are still being treated in a Kaduna hospital, unable to be discharged and unable to pay the bill. Truth Nigeria reports that “Eunice's frame is skeletal — collar bones jutting, arms wasted, eyes sunken into a gaunt face. Martha, [her mother,] is equally ravaged: cheeks hollowed; body stripped of flesh by five months of starvation. Neither can eat a full meal without vomiting. Neither can walk unassisted.” Pray for the poor, persecuted saints in Nigeria, Africa. According to Open Doors, Nigeria is the seventh most dangerous country worldwide for Christians. Argentina's economy is thriving and inflation rate is going down Argentina's economy saw another 4.4% bump last year. Since Javier Milei's election to the presidency in 2022, the economy has soared by 9%. Impressively, Argentina's inflation rate dropped to 31% — the lowest in eight years.  China's economy is steaming ahead, leaving America & Japan behind China has edged itself into a top position in the world economy. For example, Chinese automakers have trounced Japan, producing nearly 27 million vehicles in global sales last year compared to Japan's sale of 25 million vehicles.  By way of background, Japan had held the top place since the year 2000.   If measured by purchasing power, China's economy is now 50% larger than the U.S. economy. Indeed, China passed the U.S. economy in 2016. British pro-lifer awarded Pennsylvania Freedom Medal British pro-lifer Isabel Vaughan-Spruce was awarded the Pennsylvania Freedom Medal by Republican State Senator Doug Mastriano. Spruce has faced persecution for her pro-life beliefs in the United Kingdom, and was arrested multiple times for silently praying near abortion mills.  Mastriano wrote on X, “She wasn't shouting. She wasn't blocking anyone. She wasn't holding signs. She was simply praying quietly in her mind.” Vaughan-Spruce responded, “This is a huge honor and such a kind and thoughtful gesture. Thank you to all those who recognize, uphold, and defend true liberty!”  Colossians 4:2-3 says, “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains.” America's debt soars to $39 trillion Here in America, since the U.S. Congress lifted the debt ceiling last July — the U.S. Treasury debt has increased by another $2.8 trillion.  America's debt now stands at $39 trillion! The U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio increased more in the fourth quarter of 2025. It now stands at a whopping 123%. That ratio has doubled since 2008. It took 200 years for America to achieve its first $1 trillion in debt back in 1981.  Unbelievably, the Trump administration has racked up another $2.8 trillion in just the last nine months. Liberty Univ. wants right to fire employees who reject Biblical standard Last week, Liberty University presented oral arguments at the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Zinski v. Liberty University, arguing for the right of a Christian college to hold to its biblical standards on employment decisions. The case involves a male employee who attempted to appear as a female while in the employment of the university. Liberty Counsel attorney Matt Staver said, the case is “fundamentally about whether religious institutions can maintain their identity and mission in their employment decisions,” and whether a Christian university “has the right to employ individuals whose beliefs and conduct align with its doctrinal teachings.”  The outcome of this case has the potential to establish whether religious institutions retain autonomy over their missions through employment decisions based on doctrinal standards. Federal employment law operates universally across all non-ministerial positions, regardless of an institution's religious beliefs. Actor Chuck Norris, who committed his life to Christ, died And finally, actor, martial arts pro, and conservative Christian commentator  Chuck Norris, passed away on March 19th. He confessed to living a dissolute lifestyle in the 1980s, when he said he had wandered from the faith. Chuck shared his Christian profession on the program “Praise the Lord” in 2004. Listen. NORRIS: “Unfortunately, in periods of my life, I did drift from the Lord, but the Lord never drifted from me. He stayed with me the whole time.” INTERVIEWER: “Amen.” NORRIS: “Yes. And I just praised God for that. And actually, when I met my beautiful wife here, you know, I was kind of living the Hollywood lifestyle. “One morning, I visited with her, and she went in there, and she was reading the Bible. And I go, ‘What are you doing?' She says, ‘I read the Bible every morning.' I said, ‘Really?' She says, ‘Why don't you sit down here and read it with me?' And that was the beginning of me coming back to the Lord.” INTERVIEWER: “Amen!” Chuck had five children and 13 grandchildren. He was 86 years old. Hebrews 9:27-28 says, “Just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for Him.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Tuesday, March 24, in the year of our Lord 2026. Follow us on X or subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music, or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com.  Plus, you can get the Generations app through Google Play or The App Store. And there are questions. Questions like… Can the Saskatchewan Roughriders – despite their early 3-0 mark – somehow stop shooting themselves in the foot with the dumb penalties and the occasional egregious mental error? (Concomitantly, are they good enough that such may not matter?) How sorry is Joe for dumping on the Montreal Alouettes in his preseason predictions? As Artemis.bm continues to track catastrophe bond market activity through this very busy year of 2025, total settled issuance analysed by Artemis has already surpassed $15 billion, while the outstanding cat bond market has grown by 15.5% since the end of 2024. Catastrophe bond issuance is breaking all records so far in 2025, with now $15.025 billion of offerings settled across Rule 144A cat bonds and the few privately placed deals Artemis has tracked. Impressively, the level of issuance now settled in 2025 has already broken the record for first-eleven month issuance. Meaning, in every previous year the catastrophe bond market has existed, Artemis hadn't ever seen that volume of deals settle between January and the end of November. Given we are still at the end of May, with a whole month to run until the middle of 2025, it's clear the first-half cat bond issuance record is being broken by a particularly significant margin. The previous record for first-half cat bond issuance came in 2024, when just over $12.6 billion of deals were tracked by Artemis. Remember you can use all the interactive charts and visualisations over at www.artemis.bm to analyse catastrophe bond issuance, the outstanding market and view leaderboards of the top cat bond sponsors and service providers. Cat bond issuance settled in the month of May has reached a significant record high of almost $5.9 billion in 2025. Which beats the previous record for the month by approaching $2 billion. It also makes May 2025 the biggest single month of catastrophe bond issuance in the market's history, another very notable record that has been soundly broken this year. The rapid rate of catastrophe bond market activity seen in 2025 has also helped to propel the size of the market considerably higher already. Recall that 2025 has seen the highest level of cat bond maturities ever for the first-half, but the market has outpaced that with new issuance, to grow by around 15.5% since the end of 2024. Artemis' measure for the outstanding cat bond market, which does include some private deals and also may not factor in all principal reductions, or extensions of maturity, as we don't always receive that data, has now reached just over $57.12 billion. Which, as Artemis said, represents 15.5% growth in the outstanding catastrophe bond market since December 31st 2024, when the total stood at just under $49.48 billion. Artemis has seen more first-time cat bond sponsors come to market in H1 2025 than any other half-year so far, which has helped to propel this market expansion and growth. Alongside that, repeat sponsors have been issuing larger deals and growing cat bond's share of their reinsurance towers, in some cases, while other sponsors have seen an increased need for reinsurance and grown their cat bond coverage proportionally with that. The catastrophe bond market is well on-course to break the annual issuance record in 2025, as a reminder that stood at almost $17.7 billion by Artemis' numbers for 2024. Whether it is broken will depend on loss activity through the wind season, any other particularly impactful catastrophe losses, or if some kind of disruption to capital markets occurs. However, with only just under $1.6 billion of additional issuance needed to come to market, beyond what we have seen already and what is scheduled in the pipeline for June, it is now hard to think the annual record won't be broken in 2025. Stay tuned to Artemis for critical catastrophe bond market insights as the rest of 2025 progresses!

This year, eSentire is also celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the opening of its international headquarters and Security Operations Centre (SOC) in Cork, Ireland. eSentire established the Sean Hennessy Bursary award in 2021, in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science at MTU, in response to Ireland's growing cybersecurity skills shortage. According to Cyber Ireland's 2024 Security Snapshot Report, the cybersecurity industry employs approximately 8,000 professionals in Ireland, an increase of 8% since 2022. The Sean Hennessy Bursary provides college financial aid, as well as the opportunity to participate in a nine-month internship with eSentire. The scholarship is named in honour of the late Sean Hennessy, a former eSentire team member who was instrumental in establishing and managing eSentire's Global SOC in Cork in 2015. Sean Hennessy passed away in 2016. This is the fourth year that the Sean Hennessy Bursary has been awarded to a MTU student. Impressively, the three previous recipients of the award are all currently employed with eSentire's Global SOC in Cork, Ireland. "I would like to sincerely thank everyone at eSentire for this incredible opportunity to further explore the fascinating world of cybersecurity, which is a passion and interest of mine. I am also grateful to MTU for their support and guidance through my studies. He is Managing Director at Greystone working with the Agency Lending Team with a primary focus on building out and expanding their manufactured housing lending platform.
Jerry is a 25 year veteran of Fannie Mae and, during his time as Director of Multifamily Credit underwriting Fannie Mae, was responsible for a 12-state southeast region.
He had dual roles in developing and managing the manufactured housing community lending platform. Impressively, he has overseen north of 10 billion in financing.  Quotes: "You might not have the prettiest homes in there but if it's a well-run community, it's stable, it's going to do well." "Our manufactured housing community, because you've got so much stability because it costs so much for a resident to take his home and move it to another park (I mean it could be in excess of $7000), they're not just going to move down the road like in the multifamily property."
"If you've got a tier 2 loan on the property and you want to do a supplemental, you would get tier 2 pricing on the supplemental, basically."
"Their regulator, the FHFA, basically restricts the amount of business the two agencies can do and they call it cap or uncapped business. An uncapped business is they can do as many loans as they want in that space."
"They really open to more people and make it more affordable for them to get into a home and get into a park, no question about it.

A Ghost Story for Christmas is a series of annual British short films first broadcast on BBC One from 1971 to 1978, and sporadically revived by the BBC since 2005. With one exception, the original films were directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark and shot on 16 mm color film. The series aimed to adapt classic ghost stories for television, echoing the tradition of telling supernatural tales at Christmas. So far, we've covered A Warning to the Curious and The Signalman in Episode 21, Whistle and I'll Come to You and Stigma in Episode 32, and The Stalls of Barchester along with The Treasure of Abbot Thomas in Episodes 41a and 41b.This year, we're bringing you Lost Hearts on New Year's Eve. But tonight, Christmas Eve—the traditional night for ghost stories—we'll be discussing The Ash Tree. Written for the screen by David Rudkin and based on M.R. James's short story, The Ash Tree was directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark. Looking back at Clark's credits, it's surprising we haven't mentioned that he also directed one of our favorite monkey-man TV drama events from the 1990s—Chimera. That's definitely something we should cover, assuming we can find a way to watch it. The Ash Tree aired on December 23, 1975, and featured Edward Petherbridge in the dual roles of Sir Richard and Sir Matthew. According to IMDb, Petherbridge began his career in 1961 and appeared in a wide range of film and TV roles. He's apparently best known as the sharp and snooty sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey in The Dorothy L. Sayers Mysteries. Impressively, he kept working until 2017, with one of his final roles being the voice of a gentleman fish in one of Tim Burton's Alice films. The cast also included Preston Lockwood as Dr. Croome, Barbara Ewing as Anne Mothersole, and, happily for our status as a secret Doctor Who podcast (though perhaps less happily for James), Lalla Ward as Lady Augusta. Barbara Ewing had an impressive career on the small screen, appearing in shows like Peak Practice, Casualty, The Bill, an episode of Hammer House of Horror, and even the Pertwee-fronted game show Whodunnit?. She also appeared in Chiller, a British horror/fantasy anthology series from 1995 that Ross has somehow never seen but seems to pop up constantly on people's CVs. are you two aware of this and should we be covering it?) Beyond acting, Ewing is also an accomplished novelist, with nine books to her name. Her novel A Dangerous Vine even made the long list for the Orange Prize. Lalla Ward had a fascinating career trajectory. Her first film after leaving the Central School of Speech and Drama was Hammer's Vampire Circus. She was close friends with Douglas Adams, who famously took her as his date to a screening of The Empire Strikes Back in the early 1980s. Adams also introduced her to her second husband, Richard Dawkins (for whom she would later provide illustrations for his controversial books), at his 40th birthday party—they were the only two who showed up on time! Of course, her first husband was Tom Baker, with whom she starred in Doctor Who as the second incarnation of the Time Lady Romana from 1979 to 1981. There really should be a General Witchfinders drinking game where you take a sip every time we mention someone in this next bit: In 2019, a modern-day audio adaptation of The Ash Tree was released by Bafflegab Productions. During Delainey's third birth (her second freebirth), her baby experienced a true shoulder dystocia at his emergence - a complication that is almost never heard of in home or free births, and can be one of the few, rare, actual obstetric emergencies. His head was out for eight whole minutes before the rest of his body was born, and Delainey could feel exactly where his shoulder was stuck. Impressively, she and her partner stayed very calm and, guided by their intuition and intimate connection, were able to safely get their son born. This story is such a powerful example of how safety is an innate part of the birth process, but only when we don't interfere with it.  If you love the show, I would greatly appreciate a review on  Spotify or Apple Podcasts!  Follow me on Instagram @healingbirth Do you have a birth story you'd like to share on the podcast, or would like to otherwise connect? Impressively researched and committed to creating a dazzling, expressionistic visual style to evoke the sensations of exploring the uncharted corners of the world wide web, the film is both an ode to the young, brilliant minds at the forefrunt of cyberspace and an anthropological time capsule of a subcutlure that would aesthetically inform the way the burgeoning landscape of the internet and its denizens were depicted on film throughout the rest of the decade and beyond. We discuss the film's impressive layers of authenticity, as elicited by screenwriter Rafael Moreu alongside real-life hacker consultants (including then-teenager Nicholas Jarecki, who would later become a filmmaker himself). Then, we discuss Hollywood's attempts to visualize the unconquered, uncharted landscape of the fledgling internet, and how the film paints its protagonists as intrepid trailblazers in the same spirit as classic character motifs from the American western. Finally, we discuss the noteworthy landmark design of the film, from its production and sets, to its immaculate fashion, and its pitch-perfect, multi-volume soundtracks of contemporary electronic music.Brazil isn't on Twitter anymore, so follow Gus Lanzetta on Bluesky.Check out Gus's latest podcast adventure The Boku Diaries.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

This week felt like two weeks rolled into one. To kick things off, Mary Ann Azevedo walked everyone through Clio's huge fundraise. The Canadian legal tech company raised $900 million at a $3 billion valuation — a very large sum anytime, but especially in this market. Impressively, the company is still growing rapidly, which isn't easy to do when you're at such a late stage. We talked about the drivers behind that growth and how Clio differs from other legal tech startups raising capital these days.Next up, Mary Ann and Rebecca Szkutak discussed Alphabet's announcement this week that it would invest another up to $5 billion in Waymo. It's an obvious vote of confidence on self-driving cars on Alphabet's part, but both Becca and Mary Ann agreed on one thing: They'd prefer to stick with riding in cars with human drivers. We closed out our deals of the week with a lively discussion on a 17-year-old founder and investor who pitched investors out of the stall of his high school bathroom. He just raised money for his startup, Aviato, and his story is an inspirational and fun read.Next up was cybersecurity company Wiz turning down a $23 billion acquisition offer from Alphabet. We talked about potential reasons and looked at other examples of large M&A deals not working out.We wrapped up Equity with a look at digital banking startup Mercury abruptly shuttering its service to founders located in certain countries, such as Ukraine. Founders were naturally not happy, but another fintech was waiting in the wings to help affected customers. It was a super fun episode, so don't miss giving it a listen!Equity is TechCrunch's flagship podcast, produced by Theresa Loconsolo, and posts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. And that percentage skyrockets when we're talking about teen pregnancies, more than three-quarters of which are unintended.  While teen pregnancies and teen births are thankfully at an all-time low in the US, we're still behind countries like the UK and Canada in this regard. A big reason teen pregnancies have fallen so dramatically in recent decades is simply that it's much easier to have access to contraceptives. But as evidenced by nations like the UK and Canada, there's still more work we Americans can do. After all, it's easy for men to get condoms everywhere, but not nearly as easy for women to get birth control. Females who have babies as teenagers are more likely to stay or fall into poverty, attain lower levels of education, have more health problems, and generally have worse life outcomes for the mother and child. I should note that I happen to be married to someone who defied these odds and turned out just fine despite being the product of teen pregnancy, but still, the statistics speak volumes. And in a world with eight billion of us and counting, it goes without saying that it'd be preferable if the only new people joining us were both intended and wanted by their parents. A big barrier toward that end is that if women want to go on birth control, typically they require a prescription from a doctor, which is of course a hurdle, especially for teens. That's a hurdle that Cadence OTC is working to overcome, and we've got their CEO Samantha Miller on the show to talk all about it. (Side note unrelated to this episode: Samantha's is also a plant-based foods advocate and is affiliated with the Good Food Institute!) Cadence has raised $35 million in venture capital over the past six years to bring to market over-the-counter (OTC) birth control pills for females, both in the form of OTC birth control pills and OTC morning after pills. As you can imagine, this is important work no matter what, but especially in light of the Supreme Court decision ending federal protections for abortion rights, greater and easier access to contraceptives is something all of us should be able to support. In fact, just this year, in 2023, the FDA for the first time approved an OTC birth control pills for women.  Impressively, Cadence just inked a deal with Lil Drug Store Products, which services 180,000 retail locations, including convenience stores, to start carrying Cadence's Morning After pill starting in January 2024. Not only will this pill be OTC, but it will be half the price of the leading Morning After pill. As Samantha points out, it's imperative that we make it as easy, cheap, and convenient for women to control their reproductive destiny, which is exactly what Cadence OTC is working to do.   Discussed in this episode Our past episodes on family planning with Your Choice Therapeutics (male contraceptives), Dr. Escar Guarin (World Vasectomy Day), and Family Empowerment Media (family planning in the developing world). Pew Reserarch Center says US teen birth rates are falling thanks to greater access to contraceptive care.
