Would you help your sister hide a body? How about two? Now three? Oyinkan Braithwaite's "My Sister, the Serial Killer" explores just that. This book came as a listener recommendation, and it gave the Busy Girls lots to discuss.

Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week is a flashback to October 2022 when I spent a weekend with writers at the Pa Gya! Literary Festival (http://writersprojectghana.com/pagyafest/) in Accra. I met Nigerian writer and cofounder of Narrative Landscape Press Limited, Dr. Eghosa Imasuen at the first panel I attended, “Can the African Book Industry Thrive?” For Eghosa the answer must be yes, especially as a firm that believes that owning the means of production is essential to a vibrant publishing industry. Narrative Landscapes Press is committed to more than simply printing physical books they also bring editorial and book design expertise to the fore while developing a cadre of excellent writers. Eghosa's second novel, Fine Boys, a coming-of-age novel, received wide acclaim in 2012 and was published in America by the Ohio University Press' Modern African Writers Series in 2021. When he's not writing or publishing, Eghosa teaches creative writing at the annual Chimamanda Adichie Creative Writing Workshop. Prior to launching into his literary career, he graduated with a medical degree from the University of Benin. In this feel good and insightful conversation, Dr. Eghosa shares tips on how to work with publishers and about the how business of bringing books to the people promises to change the narrative on literacy, lifestyle and literary careers all over Africa.
Ashley and Kelly begin this episode with the last page of Braithwaite's My Sister, the Serial Killer, and obsessed over their love for the main character. Yes... the serial killer. Her murderous tendencies are necessary evils to them, and... you have to listen to the episode to understand. The bestselling novelist Cally Taylor talks to me about Oyinkan Braithwaite's "My Sister, The Serial Killer" and her own work - including the difference between plotting and pantsing, switching genres and keeping up with a schedule of writing a book every year.
The Unthank sisters, writers Lucy Holland and Oyinkan Braithwaite and historian and feminist activist Sally Alexander join Shahidha Bari for a conversation about what it means to be a sister on International Women's Day 2022. You could make a family from recent novels depicting sisterhood from Oyinkan Braithwaite's My Sister the Serial Killer, to Daisy Johnson's Sisters and Brit Bennett's The Vanishing Half but literary sisterhood goes back via Jane Austen and the Brontës to Chekhov, King Lear's daughters, Cinderella and Greek myths about the seven sisters who formed the Pleiades, or Antigone and Ismene. And if you're looking at feminist history the idea of the sisterhood has been a cornerstone of political action. Is it right that sisters will have a particular bond and sound if they perform music together? All of this and more in tonight's Free Thinking conversation. The Unthank sisters will be on tour with their latest album Sorrows Away visiting a range of venues from Norwich, Poole, Northampton, Middlesborough, Belfast, Edinburgh, Dublin and a range of places in between starting on March 13th in Lincoln Lucy Holland has written Sistersong set in Anglo-Saxon Britannia. She also presents Breaking the Glass Slipper, a podcast celebrating women in genre. You can hear a reading of Oyinkan's novel My Sister the Serial Killer by Weruche Opia on BBC Sounds https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/series/p08q6q19 Sally Alexander, Professor Emerita at Goldsmiths, is founding editor of the History Workshop Journal and is working on a history of psycho-analysis. Producer: Kevin Core You might also be interested in the most recent episode of Radio 3's Words and Music on Sisters, with its curated playlist of readings and music of all kinds ranging from Wordsworth, Jane Austen, Brit Bennet and Arifa Akbar to Fanny Mendelssohn, Errollyn Wallen, Hildegard of Bingen and the Labeque Sisters performing Ravel. And tomorrow's programme explores new research into women's history. And there's a playlist on the Free Thinking programme website called Women in the World https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p084ttwp

Happy Bones Day! Or not. Truthfully, I haven't checked the forecast. This week, in the spirit of the Spooky October season, it's all about the thematically sinister genre of the Psychological Thriller. Claire pulls us into the spine-chilling world of What/If. This show is filled with "What"s - What's the perfect balance between compelling and mysterious? What makes the atmosphere of a Psychological Thriller so, well, thrilling? What makes a good shocking twist? They also introduce a new shocking twist of their own - a brand new addition to the classic three elements that make up a Trashy TV Show. Afterwards, Elyse rants for her half of the episode about the new Hulu TV adaptation of one of her favorite books - Nine Perfect Strangers - and talks about how well the show measured up to the novel. From pacing, to celebrity actors, to how much of the source material to throw away or keep, there's a lot of ground to cover here. Both Claire and Elyse bring up their favorite shows that were originally based on books, and discuss what worked and what failed to impress. Before we go: Claire - My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite. A psychological thriller about two sisters, one of whom must make the difficult choice between two people she loves - a charming doctor she works closely with, or her sister the serial killer. Witty and darkly comedic, this is the perfect thriller for the spooky season. Elyse - Dónde Están los Ladrones?, Shakira's fourth* studio album, released in 1998. Need something to warm you up from the chill of autumn? Take a listen to this assortment of romantic songs, all inspired by things we've lost. Elyse recommends starting with her personal favorite song from the album, "No Creo". *Correction: In the show, Elyse mistakenly said this was her second album, but upon checking Wikipedia, turns out it was the fourth. Oops! Warning: This episode contains minor plot spoilers for the two television series What/If and Nine Perfect Strangers. Have any questions? Comments? Suggestions? In this special October episode of Our Moment, Exquisite, joined by her roommate Jonae (@jonaeealyssa), discusses the novel My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite. The story follows two sisters, Ayoola and Korede, as they navigate Ayoola's murderous impulses. Listen as Exquisite attempts to break down the story to Jonae who has never heard it before. Mispronunciations abound, aided only by Exquisite's friend Zo, who tried to teach Exquisite the words before recording. Thanks, Zo, she tried her best. During lockdown, BAFTA-winning actor Emilia Clarke discovered the work of the late British novelist and essayist Jenny Diski. Jenny had been a fan of Game of Thrones, the TV series in which Emilia starred as Daenerys Targaryen. Emilia speaks to poet and academic Dr Ian Patterson, who was married to Jenny until her death in 2016, to discuss Jenny's work and their shared love of cultural escapism. Nigerian author Oyinkan Braithwaite was long-listed for the Booker Prize in 2019 for her debut novel My Sister, the Serial Killer. Lockdown has not slowed her down, and has in fact provided inspiration for the plot of her latest novella The Baby is Mine. She shares how her love of Japanese animation, or anime, has shaped her writing during this time. After a hiatus of ten years, Hong Kong director Yonfan returned to filmmaking with an animation debut, No 7 Cherry Lane. He reveals how he turned to the work of American director Stanley Kramer when its release was impacted by the Covid-19 outbreak. Plus we hear from our listeners across the world about the art that has changed them during the pandemic. Presented by Tumi Morake Produced by Lucy Wai, Kirsty McQuire, Lucy Collingwood and Nancy Bennie. (Photo: Actor Emilia Clarke. Credit: VALERIE MACON/AFP via Getty Images)
A captivating tale of a young boy in the bayou that just lost his brother, the King and The Dragonflies by Kacen Callender, shows us a slide of reality that all children should be aware of. Next Week join us as we read My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite.
Korede's sister Ayoola is many things: the favorite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola's third boyfriend in a row is dead, stabbed through the heart with Ayoola's knife. Korede's practicality is the sisters' saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood (bleach, bleach, and more bleach), the best way to move a body (wrap it in sheets like a mummy), and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures to Instagram when she should be mourning her “missing” boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit. Korede has long been in love with a kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where she works. She dreams of the day when he will realize that she's exactly what he needs. But when he asks Korede for Ayoola's phone number, she must reckon with what her sister has become and how far she's willing to go to protect her. It's another September book club episode! (We were still figuring out our release schedule when we recorded this.) This episode contains book spoilers. Discussion begins at 25:40. This week we're talking about 'My Sister, the Serial Killer' by Oyinkan Braithwaite, a novel set in modern Nigeria featuring... murder sisters! In this episode, Jess and Joseph discuss unreliable narration in psychological thrillers by focusing on two big titles from the last decade: Gone Girl, the smash bestseller by Gillian Flynn, which details the disappearance of a woman on her fifth anniversary, and My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite, which is about exactly what it sounds like it's about. Although these novels were written over six years apart, they share some big traits regarding narrative style and trust, how family helps define main characters and their motives, and control.
Hajar and Curtis talk about debut novelist Oyinkan Braithwaite's pacy and perfect account of Korede and her younger sister, serial killer Ayoola. This was a horrifying but humorous breath of fresh air in the midst of global lockdown, and we highly recommend you spend a morning reading it before joining us for all the usual sweary spoilers as we talk about family dynamics and Instagram influencers... and Hajar gets a little angry. Just as with Fleishman is in Trouble, it appears some 1* Amazon reviewers can't help but lace/completely underpin their reviews with racism, so when we get to the review part, if you don't want to hear that stuff, we suggest leaving us there.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-dabblers-book-club. Oyinkan Braithwaite's 2018 novel My Sister, the Serial Killer is the story of two sisters, Korede and Ayoola, who live in Lagos, Nigeria. Korede is a hard working nurse, who cares deeply about her patients and her family, in particular her sister, who she feels protective of after a difficult childhood. It could be a sweet family novel, except for the small fact that Ayoola can't stop killing her boyfriends. And dutiful Korede is always there to help her clean up the mess. Life, however, becomes much more complicated when Ayoola begins dating a doctor at Korede's hospital, someone Korede has deep romantic feelings for. And so begins the story of My Sister, the Serial Killer. Interview with Braithwaite from Politics and Prose: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcfCcOfpF08&app=desktop
On Friday 3 May Kate and Cassie present the Bookshelf live onstage from the Sydney Writers Festival with guests English novelist Max Porter, American writer Alexander Chee and Nigerian novelist Oyinkan Braithwaite.
We talk about a very fun and very quick read, My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite. Also we have news! We just launched a Patreon and if you're interested in helping support the podcast you can check it out at www.patreon.com/thebookstore. We love you. Our next read has us returning to our incest obsessed Queen of Bonkerstown when we read Heaven by V.C. Andrews.
This week we read Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah and Becca says something along the lines of "I'm usually pretty empathetic, but I just can't care about a school shooter's feelings." We're going to be off next week, but we will be back the following week with a discussion and review of My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite.
