In this episode, LDG breaks down every aspect of the NWSL opening weekend!LDG goes match by match across the weekend of play, in chronological order, and focuses on the smallest details you might have missed in each match, as well as the overarching themes and early storylines to keep an eye on.He analyzes what the first weekend of games revealed about the teams' identities, especially expansion teams/sides with new coaches, highlighting the tactical trends he found and the biggest surprises in the results (looking at you, Thorns and Seattle for winning in a very impressive fashion against two perennial teams, respectively!)LDG also points out the key players who impressed, from new signings to the league, like Lucia di Guglielmo and Leah Klenke, to goalkeepers in net who put in superhuman performances, saved far more chances than typical, Abby Smith and Jane Campbell. After all, it is only the opening weekend, so LDG examines what these results indicate tactically and personnel-wise for the losing and winning sides moving forward, and which teams may need to make adjustments ahead of future matches.LDG ends by exploring the overarching imbalance in investment across the league, shares his hopes for those franchises in the future, and explains how economic and strategic investment off the pitch has mirrored the franchise's success on the pitch.Thank you for listening! Send us a textIt is a great pleasure today to re-release an episode from back in season 7 to celebrate the paperback edition of to Jane Campbell's novel “Interpretations of Love” which was published on 5th June Jane joined me to talk about her first novel, Interpretations of Love. Regular listeners may know that I've talked about one of Jane's books before, which is a short story collection called Cat Brushing, which I absolutely loved. Jane was a group analyst and then became a writer in her late 70s, publishing her first book in her 80s and I think she's a real inspiration that it's never too late to start writing but that also to remember that as we interact with people and as we work with them we will collect stories and we will get a better understanding of what a narrative is and different people's perspectives and that probably actually makes people better writers. It was a real joy talking to Jane and I'm really hoping you're going to enjoy our conversation.

The Holiday Season is upon us! In Episode 222, we continue our annual tradition of sharing bookish holiday gift ideas. We've given these items to loved ones or treated ourselves to them (or received them as gifts!). We hope you find our ideas helpful. Since our last episode, we've had some fun biblio adventures. Two highlights: Chris took a leisurely drive through the back roads of Connecticut to Hickory Stick Bookshop in Washington Depot (the town that inspired the Gilmore Girls), and Emily participated in the Cherry Bombe member book club discussion of Ina Garten's memoir Be Ready When the Luck Happens, featuring Ina's co-writer Deborah Davis. In our “Just Read” segment, we discuss a gardening book, a YA novel, two picture books, and two novels, one a suspense thriller, the other literary fiction: Complete Starter Guide to Bonsai: Growing from Seed or Seedling--Wiring, Pruning, Care, and Display by David Squirer When We Flew Away: A Novel of Anne Frank Before the Diary by Alice Hoffman Fight of the Century: Alice Paul Battles Woodrow Wilson for the Vote by Barb Rosenstock, illustrated by Sarah Green I Am Book by Joren Cull Trouble Island by Sharon Short The Weekend by Charlotte Wood Emily also discusses two short stories she's read, “Johnny Christmas” by Ivy Pochoda from Eight Very Bad Nights: A Collection of Hanukkah Noir edited by Tod Goldberg and “Cat Brushing” from the collection Cat Brushing by Jane Campbell. Chris hasn't read Gregory Magquire's novel Wicked, but she's curious about it after seeing the new Wicked movie. Have you read it? Thanks as always for listening!

Jane Campbell erzählt in ihrem Debütroman von den unterschiedlichen Facetten der Liebe, von Ängsten und Traumata, von Sehnsucht und Hoffnung. Absolut lesenwert. Von MS-Admin_HF20.
If you sometimes worry you've left it too late to follow your heart, today's guest should give you hope. At 40, Jane Campbell got a divorce and took herself off to university where she trained as a group analyst. 40 years later, at the age of 80, she had her first short story was published, after she sent Cat Brushing to the London Review of Books on a whim. As a rule they don't publish fiction, but less than three weeks later, they did just that. Cat Brushing became the title of her debut short story collection - a short, sharp collection about the inner life of older women that I've read over and over again. The New York Times compared her to Edna Obrien and Muriel Spark. No biggie. Now Jane's written a novel, Interpretations of Love which is, ultimately, about the things left unsaid and their lifelong implications. From her home in Oxfordshire, Jane told me why it's so important to her to put the loves, lusts and losses of old women centre stage. We also discussed the impact of being a war baby and growing up with the belief that men were surplus to requirements, finding herself, a new life and a job she loved at 40 - and doing it again at 80. The lure of the solitary life and how she learnt to stop asking permission in midlife - and has never looked back. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Cat Brushing and Interpretations of Love by Jane Campbell and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Gut gemachte, anspruchsvolle Unterhaltung. Rezension von Julia Schröder

Other titles I considered for this episode: Personal Style and Gatekeeping in the Workplace Body Image, Privilege, and Influencer Culture Breaking Free From the Matrix of the PR World and Embracing Authenticity At one point in her career, author and coach Helen Jane Campbell was pulled into a room (along with the other women in the firm) and told what kind of underwear they should wear underneath their work clothes. That somebody ever thought that it was okay to dictate women what kind of underwear they should wear is jaw-dropping but it also is exemplary of the Patriarchy in the workplace...and life, really. It may be jaw-dropping, but you know what? We women participate in this dictatorship or how we should look and what we should wear every day. We don't necessarily even understand that we are doing that until someone lifts the veil for us. Well, we are lifting the veil! Helen shares her remarkable journey with us from working in PR, buying the right handbags, having the right haircut, and doing all she could to fit it, to BREAKING FREE of that and discovering her true authentic self. She has two decades of PR experience that she brings to the table and applies that knowledge in a disruptive way to help change the narrative! It's so compelling and really exciting! In today's episode we talk to Jane Campbell, the author of the short story collection Cat Brushing (published in the UK by Hachette and US by Grove/Atlantic). Her first published short story, "Cat Brushing," came out in 2017 in the London Review of Books -- when she was 77. Interpretations of Love is the name of her next novel, which is scheduled for Spring 2024. We really loved talking to her in this wide-ranging interview, in which we touch on everything from portrayals of the elderly to existential angst. By the end, she's even interviewing us. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did. * As always, we'd love for you to take a minute to rate and review us in your podcast app, as this helps other listeners find the show.
