Concern about the uptick of opioid use in the workplace. The Drug Detection Agency released its drug testing findings in the three months to December. Cannabis continues to be the most prevalent substance detected in workplace drug tests, accounting for 59 per cent of cases. But CEO Glen Dobson told Andrew Dickens 12 percent involved opioids, which is the most high-risk drug in the workplace. He says we're starting to see the trends we see internationally, like the widespread Fentanyl issue in the US. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sent us text! We would love to hear from you! The willingness to life-long learning is one of the keys to a positive future. As the world constantly changes, so should you, at least in a way that shows your accumulation of knowledge and overall growth. Dr. Paul and a colleague unexpectedly found themselves typecast as potential “evil doers” by U.S.  Air Force security personnel. With the application of emotional maturity and common sense, a very tense situation was resolved peacefully to the satisfaction of all concerned without further incident. For a bit of good news, consider the development of a new drug that alleviates pain without a patient ever becoming addicted to it; a development that will help with the Opiod crisis. Furthering one's education through online degree and certification programs is a great thing to do. The technological development of visual online platforms like Zoom makes sharing information easy. Just make sure you are dealing with an institution/program that has been accredited by an official body that regulates colleges and universities so that you don't waste your time and money. Almost everyone has a smart phone. It is worth your while to use it for your benefit. There are many things you can do, but one of the most essential is to input your medical information so that emergency services or hospital personnel can access it. This may come in handy one day if you are unable to effectively communicate for yourself. Meet an inspirational wingman who has defied the odds and accomplished a great deal, all while simultaneously helping to develop others to follow his path of success.

The hypothesis suggested that UV light could affect opioid receptors in human brains. -       Alastair took a proactive approach to test his hypothesis by exposing himself aggressively to UV light. Living in New York City, he deliberately spent two hours in the sun every day during the summer, in addition to using a tanning bed vigorously. The goal was to maximize exposure to UV light. -       Alastair was strategic about the timing of UV exposure, going out between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., which is considered the highest UV index. He aimed to expose himself during the peak hours of UV intensity to enhance the effectiveness of the experiment. [08:30] Narcan's Swift Action and Alastair's UV Light Experiment -       Narcan rapidly detaches substances that bind to opioid receptors in the brain. It acts quickly, causing not only a reversal of the respiratory effects but also inducing withdrawal symptoms if the person is not breathing. This mechanism serves as the basis for Alastair's experiment. -       Alastair hypothesized that if there is a correlation between UV light and the opioid effect in the brain, Narcan, known to work on normal opioid usage, should have a similar effect in the presence of UV light. This led him to experiment by exposing himself to UV light and then taking Narcan, resulting in a full withdrawal experience. -       According to him, the consistent results indicated that UV light does indeed affect opioid receptors in the brain. -       Alastair's experience lends support to the notion that UV light has a significant and consistent impact on opioid receptors in the brain. [12:30] An Exploration of Light, Mood, and the Subtle Opioid Influence of UV Rays -       Alastair decided to dig deeper into the connection between light exposure, particularly visible light, and mood disorders like SAD. -       He discovered that, separate from the positive effects of visible light seen in SAD treatment, there's another aspect involving UV light, which is not visible to the human eye. -       UV light, distinct from visible light, has effects on the body, including replenishing vitamin D levels and influencing opioid receptors. -       Alastair explained that UV light, over time, subtly affects human opioid receptors, similar to substances like heroin, morphine, fentanyl, and Vicodin. -       While the response is not as strong, prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to feelings of tiredness or reinvigoration, akin to experiencing a mild opioid stimulation. This sheds light on why people may enjoy spending a day at the beach or using tanning beds to achieve a subtle opioid effect. [19:20] Addressing Opioid Addiction and Tanning Bed Dualities -       Alastair suggests that one approach to address opioid addiction is to ensure individuals receive enough sunlight and vitamin D throughout their lives. By maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D, the brain may be less likely to respond to prescription painkillers in an addictive manner, potentially preventing addiction from the outset. -       Researchers are exploring an alternative approach for individuals already abusing or dependent on opioids. Instead of traditional methods like methadone clinics, where individuals are gradually tapered off opioids, there is evidence suggesting that ultraviolet (UV) light could serve as a substitute. -       Alastair discusses the dual nature of tanning beds. While he initially doubted the concept of tanning bed addiction, he acknowledges that there is compelling evidence from esteemed researchers suggesting that tanning beds, with their potent UVA light, can be as addictive as synthetic opioids like Vicodin or Oxycodone. -       However, he also highlights the potential use of tanning beds as a tool to help individuals transition off synthetic opioids. [23:45] Sunblock Controversies: Balancing Skin Cancer Prevention and Vitamin D Synthesis -       The use of sunblock is a controversial subject, particularly in discussions involving dermatologists who often focus on skin cancer prevention. -       Overexposure to ultraviolet radiation, especially from the sun, is known to cause skin cancer. While some doctors recommend avoiding UV light and using vitamin D supplements, Alastair suggests a more relaxed approach, emphasizing the benefits of an active lifestyle and time spent outdoors. -       Some doctors advocate for sunblock as a means to prevent skin cancer, while others, like Alastair, express concerns about its potential negative impact on vitamin D synthesis. -       Alastair expresses skepticism about the marketing behind sunblocks, suggesting that it may not always be honest. [48:00] A Journey through Mood Changes and Tanning Bed Seeking Behavior -       As the seasons changed, Alastair noticed a shift in his mood and described feeling a compulsion in the back of his mind. This compulsion led to what he referred to as "tanning bed seeking behavior." -       He experienced a sense of low-level gloom and a compulsion to seek out tanning, akin to textbook drug-seeking behavior. -       Alastair was mindful of the behavioral changes he observed in himself, characterized by a compulsion to seek out tanning beds. -       He noted that the compulsion to seek out tanning eventually went away. While he initially felt the urge to address the low mood through tanning, with time, the compulsion subsided. AND MUCH MORE! Pennsylvania Drug Laws May Limit Syringe ServicesPennsylvania is one of 12 states that do not implicitly or explicitly authorize syringe services programs through statute or regulation, according to a recent analysis. They are widely considered to be illegal outside of Allegheny County and Philadelphia, where officials have for decades used local health power to grant legal protection to people who operate syringe services programs. These programs have widespread support in the medical community, and expanding them is listed as one of nine “Core Strategies” for the tens of billions of dollars coming to states as part of settlements with drug companies for their role in allegedly fueling the opioid epidemic. A coalition of state attorneys general reached the agreements with the companies.Pennsylvania expects to receive more than $1.6 billion in opioid settlement funds, but the state's ban makes it significantly harder for the money to directly support expanding syringe services in many places. Some supporters of syringe services programs operate underground. Carla Sofronski, executive director of the Pennsylvania Harm Reduction Network, said she's not aware of anyone ever facing criminal charges for doing so in the state, but noted the threat hangs over them, and they are taking a “great risk.”Read more at sciencefriday.com.These Romance Novels Represent Black Women In ScienceThe fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (also known as STEM) are not particularly diverse. And despite a gradual uptick in diversity over the last decade, a 2023 report from the National Science Foundation showed that only 24% of people in these industries are Hispanic, Black, or Native American.Dr. Carlotta Berry is working to change that, taking an untraditional approach to encourage people from marginalized backgrounds to enter the sciences. She is, as she puts it, an engineering professor by day and romance novelist by night. Working under the pen name Carlotta Ardell, she writes youth-friendly romance novels featuring Black protagonists who work in STEM fields.SciFri producer and host of the Universe Of Art podcast D. Peterschmidt sat down with Dr. Berry, who is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, to talk about how she got started on this journey and why she wants to make STEM a little steamier.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. On this episode we dive deep into the classic Troma title SURF NAZIS MUST DIE. One of the most legendary exploitation films of all time we go left foot first (Because goofy footing cannot do!) into a movie often looked over because of its title, the company that released it, and that fact that it is PURE exploitation. This film is a gem and we hope you enjoy this UNCUT and UNCENSORED Summer School episode. The following episode is totally uncut and, oh I would say, 97% as close to as what it sounded like the moment we recorded. Big Jay Oakerson joins Adam, Chris, and Jessimae Peluso. The three chat about warehouses, human trafficking, and Pamela Anderson. This leads into a discussion about sex tapes and the group's earliest memories of finding porn. The gang then laughs about various methods of maintaining one's vehicle before Adam finds a way to complain about ceiling fans and milk frothing wands. Big Jay then tells a story about David Schwimmer and Gwyneth Paltrow. The podcast resumes from backstage at Adam's live show in Fresno. Chris reports the news, starting with a story about a San Jose police union executive being involved in an international opioid smuggling operation. The guys then chat about a teacher fired for having his students write their own obituaries and a man arrested for burglarizing Michael Jordan's mansion. Adam then talks about seeing the movie ‘Air' and the guys revisit the story of how Michael Jordan's father was murdered. Lastly, the two talk about a Texas citizen shooting the man who stole his car after using an Apple AirTag to locate it. PLUGS: Watch Big Jay Oakerson's new special Dog Belly on YouTube now!
