Unbeknownst to many, the United States is soon to be the largest exporter of oil and gas. With increased drilling and fracking in the Texas Permian Basin and multiple oil and gas pipelines headed for the Gulf of Mexico Coast, the neighboring communities are at the nexus of climate change disasters and community resistance. Port Arthur Texas is home base for the largest oil refinery in North America and a dizzying toxic array of fossil fuel and chemical facilities. But the people are stepping up to say - NO MORE. Port Arthur Community Action Network (also known as PACAN) is raising the alarm, holding the polluters accountable, and paving the path to transition away from an extractive economy to one that supports restorative justice. Our guest on this encore presentation is John Beard, Jr., Founder and CEO of Port Arthur Community Action Network [https://www.pa-can.com/], is helping to mobilize his community of Port Arthur and the Southeast Texas region. As a former oil employee turned advocate for environmental justice in the place he has lived all his life. John has been fighting for health and safety protections on the refineries, export terminals, petrochemical plants, and leading efforts against deepwater ports, each of which could export an estimated 2 million barrels of crude oil per day. He is the recipient of the 2021 Rose Braz Award for Bold Activism from the Center for Biological Diversity. This year he helped lead October's historic People vs. Fossil Fuels week of action in Washington DC, and he brought a powerful voice to November's U.N. climate talks in Glasgow. We hear from activist Hilton Kelley. Raised in the segregated west side African-American community of Port Arthur Texas, the most polluted coastal town in America, he went on to join the Navy and become a successful actor. But at 39 he returned to help restore his community and fight pollution becoming a leading environmental warrior, winning battles around air pollution, PCB incineration and the Keystone pipeline. Along with recalling oil spills he recites a poem that was key to his success, ‘My True History.' Rising Tide, the Ocean Podcast is co-hosted by Blue Frontier's David Helvarg and the Inland Ocean Coalition's Vicki Nichols-Goldstein. This podcast aims to give you information, inspiration and motivation (along with a few laughs) to help understand our ocean world and make it better. The ocean is rising, and so are we!Learn more at bluefront.org
On the 93rd edition of Free City Radio we hear from John Beard of the Port Arthur Community Action Network (PACAN https://www.pa-can.com), which is a member organization of the national #BuildBackFossilFree coalition. In this interview John speaks about the ways that oil and gas production has played a negative role in Port Arthur communities struggling with the health impacts of being located close to some of the largest oil and gas refinery locations in North America, including a major plant of TOTAL corporation. Important John speaks about the ways that environmental racism comes into play, given the ways that Black communities in Port Arthur have been impacted by the negative health impacts of living in this oil production region of Texas along the Gulf coast. This is an important interview that highlights a specific reality of environmental racism and the voice of an important local activist in Port Arthur campaigning for climate and environmental justice locally and nationally within the U.S. Thank you to Nyshie Perkinson at the Climate Law Institute / Center for Biological Diversity for helping to arrange this interview. Music on this edition of Free City Radio is by GAIKA @gaikasays out of London. Free City Radio is hosted and produced by Stefan @spirodon Christoff

My guest today played with the Hawks from 2000-2005 than went on to play 12 NFL seasons for the Atlanta Falcons after being selected in 2nd round of the 2005 draft and was a key part of 2 Big Ten championships with the Hawks. He originally came to Iowa as a fullback out of Port Arthur Texas. But was switched over to the defensive side of the ball when we needed more quality players on the d-line. He finished his collegiate career with 131 tackles (39 for losses), 19 sacks, 24 quarterback hurries, one interception, two pass deflections, four fumble recoveries, and five forced fumbles. Had an outstanding NFL career with a major highlight.....At the end of the 2016 season, Babineaux and the Falcons reached Super Bowl LI, (51) where they faced Tom Brady & the New England Patriots on February 5, 2017. In the Super Bowl, he recorded one assisted tackle as the Falcons fell in a 34–28 overtime defeat. Ladies and gentlemen....Johnathan Babineaux
Our discussion focused on the high level issues associated with climate change and why we are experience hurricane with ever increasing intensity like hurricanes Harvey and Irma. We also discussed ground level issues in the Houston community regarding toxic pollution from local chemical plants and oil refineries. Our guests were: Dr. Kerry Cook - Climate Scientists at the University of Texas Kerry Cook came to The University of Texas at Austin in August 2008. She began her career at NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Lab at Princeton University, followed by 18 years as a professor at Cornell University. At UT, she teaches graduate courses in geophysical fluid dynamics, and a popular undergraduate course on Global Warming. Dr. Cook is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society, and served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research and an editor of the Journal of Climate. Dr. Cook's research centers on predicting and understanding climate change and climate variability around the world, including Africa, South America, the central U.S., and home in Austin, TX. She and her group use numerical models of the climate system, including atmosphere, ocean, and vegetation components, along with observational analysis to improve our understanding about how features and processes at the earth's surface interact with atmospheric circulation and precipitation fields. Kristal Ibarra-Rodríguez - Volunteer Coordinator with the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club After serving as a long-time volunteer with the Sierra Club at both local and national levels, Kristal now works with Lone Star Chapter volunteer leaders and staff to develop and implement outreach programs that support the work of existing volunteers and aim to recruit new ones. Prior to this role, she conducted outreach on waste management practices in California with successful efforts toward achieving the ambitious goal of 75% waste diversion from landfills by 2020. Kristal is a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico, her home island, where she studied General Science with particular focus on Environmental Education and Sociology. Luke Metzger - Executive Director of Environment Texas Luke Metzger is the State Director of Environment Texas, a statewide, citizen-funded advocate for clean air, clean water and open spaces. The San Antonio Current has called Mr. Metzger "long one of the most energetic and dedicated defenders of environmental issues in the state." He has played a key role in dozens of successful environmental campaigns, including winning permanent protection for the Christmas Mountains of Big Bend, getting Shell and Chevron Phillips to cut air pollution at two Texas refineries and chemical plants, and getting the Legislature to dramatically boost funding for water conservation and state parks. Ashely “Flashe’ Gordon, was on the phone with us as she was on the ground in Port Arthur in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey Ashely is an environmental and social activist. Taking care of the community has always been her priority. Both of her parents served in the community during Ashely’s childhood. That is when she learned that our community is our family and we have a responsibility to that family. She returned to Austin in 2013 after the death of my father in 2008 with a renewed passion to serve in Travis County. Ashely was a candidate for Travis County Commissioner in 2017. She now lives in Port Arthur Texas, which was hit hard by Hurricane Harvey. For more info about the environmental impacts of Hurricane Harvey, the EcoNetwork wrote two blogs on the subject. http://austineconetwork.com/hurricane-harvey-how-it-happened-and-how-to-help/ http://austineconetwork.com/environmental-consequences-of-hurricane-harvey/
