In our Psalm today, David gives us words to cling to when we find ourselves in hard times. David, in his life, has had moments of great victory and moments of great trial. Today he gives us two words that we can claim in these moments. First, we can name our pain and hurt to God. Speak it, and give it to Him. Second, we can remember the times in the past when He has been there for us. With these gifts, we can stand in hard times.  Shameless plug: here's a link to Method(ist) to the Madness, our new, hopefully entertaining podcast about church history. - https://methodisttothemadness.buzzsprout.com/Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. We're continuing in the book of Numbers today, which has a reputation for putting people off both because of the title and because the first seven chapters (or so) contain a good bit of repetition. You'll experience some of that today, and if you want to put me on 2x speed for that section, I won't judge! This repetition is intentional, however. Think of it: they didn't have a copy/paste function for papyrus or scrolls, so they would've been required to hand copy everything we're reading today. These handwritten details would have also been read aloud, and would have impressed upon the hearer that God had provided for the Israelites lavishly. Numbers 5 - 1:09 . Numbers 6 - 6:46 . Numbers 7 - 10:55 . Numbers 8 - 22:47 . Psalm 31 - 26:51 .  :::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by Bobby Brown, Katelyn Pridgen, Eric Williamson & the Christian Standard Biblefacebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org

In today's episode, Israel arrives at Sinai and Moses ascends the mountain to speak with God. The Lord sends him back down with a proposition: if Israel will carefully listen to Him and keep His covenant, then they will be his own possession out of all the peoples, even though the whole world belongs to God. After confirming with the people, Moses ascends again and receives a moral code by which they might live; this Decalogue, more commonly known as the Ten Commandments, allowed Israel to know how they could live a life that pleased the Lord. After witnessing the plagues on Egypt, the columns of cloud and fire, and the Red Sea's parting, it would have been no small thing for Israel to know that such a powerful God would be on their side.Exodus 19 - 1:01 . Exodus 20 – 5:59 . Exodus 21 - 10:01 . Psalm 31 - 16:06 .  :::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by the Christian Standard Bible.facebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org

Psalm 31 is a heartfelt prayer of David, expressing his trust in God as his refuge and fortress amid distress. Pastor Fredo explores the depth of David's dependence on God, acknowledging that only the Lord can provide true safety and deliverance from life's dangers. This Psalm serves as a powerful reminder that God is a stronghold for those who seek Him in times of trouble.Pastor Fredo also reflects on the theme of God's unfailing love, which sustains and rescues His people. It's a call to trust God completely, knowing that even in our darkest moments, He is present to deliver and restore us.--Support content like this and the vision of Sandals Church at http://sandalschurch.com/support/Join our email list for content updates: http://sandalschurch.com/subscribeDownload the Sandals Church App: http://sandalschurch.com/app/If you have questions, need prayer or want to get connected, please email us anytime at online@sandalschurch.com!

houghts on the readings for January 14th (Genesis 25 and 26 Psalm 31 and Matthew 16) Genesis 25 tells that Abraham took another wife, called Keturah. We are not sure at what time Keturah became Abraham's wife; but, she bare him 6 sons. These sons became the progenitors of many of the Arab nations – already we see Abraham has becoming the “father of a multitude (or “many nations”)”. They were sent eastward enriched with gifts from the great patriarch. Abraham died at the age of 175 and was buried in the cave of Machpelah by his sons Isaac and Ishmael. From verses 12-18 we have the genealogy of Ishmael from whom descended 12 princes. From verses 19-28 of Genesis 25 we are told that Rebekah had great problems in conception and once pregnant she experienced a trying time. Rebekah enquired of Yahweh (probably through the priest) about the wrestlings within her; and was told she would give birth to twins, who would be very different and, that the elder twin would serve the younger. Esau was born hairy, or fully developed. He was red haired and so called Esau, which means red. The younger twin was born grasping the heel of his twin. He was named Jacob meaning heel grabber. The difference between them was evident from their early days with Jacob being “a plain (upright) man dwelling in tents (a sojourner like his fathers)”; whilst Esau was an energetic, active man – a man's man; an athletic hunter. Rebekah favoured Jacob (her son); whilst Isaac loved Esau – who he perhaps envied, as Esau was everything that Isaac was not. After returning from his hunting without any prey Esau, claiming to be starving, sold his birthright to his spiritually ambitious brother, Jacob for a bowl of red lentils. This story indicated Esau had no love of the promises and not a skerrick of spirituality (see the comments in Hebrews 12 verses 14 to17). In Genesis 26 God repeats the Abrahamic promise to Isaac. There was a famine in the Land and Isaac was told to sojourn and trust in the Almighty to provide. From verse 6 we see Isaac journeying to the land of the Philistines, where he like his father (Abraham) lied about his wife; because of fear for his own life. But after being seen acting as a husband, Isaac is rebuked by the Philistine king Abimelech. How incredible that great men of faith should so fail – but as James tells us, they were of like passions (and weaknesses) to ourselves. Abimelech charged his people to act honourably to Rebekah. Isaac sowed in that country and reaped an abundant harvest. Isaac, like Abraham, became rich and powerful; and was envied by the Philistines. All the wells that had been dug by Abraham were filled with earth by these lazy and envious men. Isaac was instructed to move away and he relocated to Gerar. There Isaac again dug his father's well and the Philistines quarrelled over the water. The well was named Esek, meaning “contention”. So Isaac moved on and dug another well, named Sitnah (meaning“a quarrel”), as this again was the consequence of finding water. He moved once more and dug for and found water at Rehoboth (meaning “room”). This water was uncontested. Finally he moved to Beersheba (“the well of the covenant”), where Yahweh repeated to Isaac the promise to Abraham in verse 24. The chapter finishes with a covenant being made between Isaac and Phicol, captain of the Philistine army. After a feast in which the Philistines acknowledge Isaac to be “blessed of Yahweh”, there is an exchange of oaths Isaac settled in Beersheba and dwelt there with the well of the covenant providing their needs as had their Sustainer and Protector. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before.. In today's Wisdom Nugget, as we continue our exploration of Psalm 31. Today's passage, Psalm 31:19-24, takes us from a place of distress to one of praise and confidence in God's goodness. In the previous verses, we saw how David poured out his heart to God, pleading for mercy and rescue amid his pain and danger. In these final verses of the psalm, David shifts his focus. He celebrates God's goodness, faithfulness, and protection, encouraging all who trust in the Lord to take courage and place their hope in Him. Let's read Psalm 31:19-24 from the New Living Translation, and then we'll break it down verse by verse. Psalm 31:19-24 (NLT) 19 How great is the goodness You have stored up for those who fear You. You lavish it on those who come to You for protection, blessing them before the watching world. 20 You hide them in the shelter of Your presence, safe from those who conspire against them. You shelter them in Your presence, far from accusing tongues. 21 Praise the Lord, for He has shown me the wonders of His unfailing love. He kept me safe when my city was under attack. 22 In panic I cried out, “I am cut off from the Lord!” But You heard my cry for  mercy and answered my call for help. 23 Love the Lord, all you godly ones! For the Lord protects those who are loyal to Him, but He harshly punishes the arrogant. 24 So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord! The Goodness of God (Verses 19-20): David begins this final section of the psalm with a powerful declaration of God's goodness: “How great is the goodness You have stored up for those who fear You. You lavish it on those who come to You for protection, blessing them before the watching world” (verse 19). After pouring out his heart in the earlier verses, expressing his fears, pain, and distress, David now turns to praise, acknowledging the abundant goodness of God. God's goodness isn't something that's merely experienced in the abstract or on rare occasions. It's stored up, waiting for those who fear the Lord and come to Him for protection. There's an image here of God's goodness as a treasure, something He's carefully reserved and prepared for those who seek refuge in Him. This isn't a meager or stingy supply—it's lavish, overflowing, and abundant. David also mentions that this blessing is given “before the watching world.” God's faithfulness to His people is evident to others. When we trust in the Lord, His goodness and favor in our lives serve as a testimony to those around us. The way God cares for His people shines like a beacon, showing His greatness to the world. Verse 20 continues this theme: “You hide them in the shelter of Your presence, safe from those who...

I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2490 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before.. In today's Wisdom Nugget, we'll be diving into Psalm 31:9-18 from the New Living Translation. David continues his heartfelt prayer to God in this passage, crying out for mercy and deliverance. He's deeply troubled—emotionally, physically, and spiritually—but what stands out is how, amid this pain, he continues to turn to God for refuge and rescue. We can all learn from David's vulnerability before God, especially when we find ourselves in times of distress. Let's take a moment to read Psalm 31:9-18, and then we'll break it down into smaller sections to see what lessons we can draw from David's words. Psalm 31:9-18 (NLT) 9 Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am in distress. Tears blur my eyes. My body and soul are withering away. 10 I am dying from grief;  my years are shortened by sadness. Sin has drained my strength; I am wasting away from within. 11 I am scorned by all my enemies and despised by my neighbors—even my friends are afraid to come near me. When they see me on the street, they run the other way. 12 I am ignored as if I were dead, as if I were a broken pot. 13 I have heard the many rumors about me, and I am surrounded by terror. My enemies conspire against me, plotting to take my life. 14 But I am trusting You, O Lord, saying, “You are my God!” 15 My future is in Your hands. Rescue me from those who hunt me down relentlessly. 16 Let Your favor shine on Your servant. In Your unfailing love, rescue me. 17 Don't let me be disgraced, O Lord, for I call out to You for help. Let the wicked be disgraced; let them lie silent in the grave. 18 Silence their lying lips—those proud and arrogant lips that accuse the godly. A Cry for Mercy (Verses 9-10): David begins Verse 9 of the psalm with an intense cry for mercy: “Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am in distress. Tears blur my eyes. My body and soul are withering away.” Right away, we sense the depth of David's anguish. He's not just feeling a little down—he's in a place of deep, overwhelming distress. His tears are so frequent that his vision is blurred, and his emotional pain is so intense that it's affecting him physically. He says his body and soul are withering away, a vivid picture of someone who feels completely spent, both spiritually and physically. This is a reminder that as human beings, we are not just spirits or bodies, but whole persons. When we are in deep emotional or spiritual distress, it can affect us physically. David isn't ashamed to admit his weakness and weariness. Instead, he brings it before God, asking for mercy. In verse 10, he continues: “I am dying from grief; my years are shortened by sadness. Sin has drained my strength; I am wasting away from within.” Here, David reflects on how his prolonged sorrow and grief have taken a toll on his...

I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2488 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before.. In today's Wisdom Nugget, we'll be exploring Psalm 31:1-8 from the New Living Translation—a passage that speaks deeply to the human experience of seeking refuge, trusting in God, and finding security in Him during moments of distress. Psalm 31 is a psalm of David, and it reflects both his deep trust in God and his desperation in times of difficulty. What's beautiful about this psalm is its raw honesty and deep reliance on God as a refuge. David faced many trials throughout his life—times of danger, betrayal, and even his own personal failures—but he consistently turned to God for protection and deliverance. This psalm invites us to do the same, no matter what challenges we face. So, let's dive into Psalm 31:1-8 and discover how it can guide us in our daily lives. Psalm 31:1-8 (NLT) 1 O Lord, I have come to You for protection; don't let me be disgraced. Save me, for You do what is right. 2 Turn Your ear to listen to me; rescue me quickly. Be my rock of protection, a fortress where I will be safe. 3 You are my rock and my fortress. For the honor of Your name, lead me out of this danger. 4 Pull me from the trap my enemies set for me, for I find protection in You alone. 5 I entrust my spirit into Your hand. Rescue me, Lord, for You are a faithful God. 6 I hate those who worship worthless idols. I trust in the Lord. 7 I will be glad and rejoice in Your unfailing love, for You have seen my troubles, and You care about the anguish of my soul. 8 You have not handed me over to my enemies but have set me in a safe place. A Cry for Protection and Deliverance (Verses 1-2): The psalm begins in verse 1 with David's plea for protection: “O Lord, I have come to You for protection; don't let me be disgraced. Save me, for You do what is right.” From the very first verse, we see David's complete reliance on God. He turns to the Lord for refuge, recognizing that only God can offer the protection he needs. David's request is personal and direct. He's not just asking for general safety; he's asking God to prevent him from being disgraced or shamed amid his troubles. This could refer to various situations in David's life, from personal failures to being pursued by enemies. He's seeking not only physical protection but also spiritual and emotional preservation. He wants his reputation, his honor, and his relationship with God to remain intact through whatever trials he faces. In verse 2, David continues by asking God to “turn Your ear to listen to me; rescue me quickly. Be my rock of protection, a fortress where I will be safe.” The imagery here is powerful—David is asking God to listen to his cry and respond swiftly. He describes God as his rock and fortress, a place of solid security where he can find...
