Absolom is a perfect picture of the outcome of every person who decides to go against God's word and will, and live their lives the way they want to rather than what God wants them to. We would be wise to take heed.

We can see that David had complete trust in God when he said this! This was in reference to Absolom, his son that wanted him killed. But David had trust in God to keep him safe, therefore he had no fear of his son! Please listen to these powerful truths pulled out of God's Word!
Al, Zach, John Luke, and Christian conclude their study of David by confronting the truth that forgiveness does not erase consequences. They trace how unaddressed sin and lingering guilt created a leadership vacuum that fractured David's family, fueled rebellion, and led to civil war and the death of thousands. The guys show how private sin inevitably becomes public and why silence after repentance can be as destructive as the original failure. They close by pointing to Jesus as the true Shepherd-King who restores what sin deforms and leads with justice and mercy. In this episode: Psalm 51; 2 Samuel 7, verses 12–16; 2 Samuel 12, verses 1–14; Genesis 4, verses 1–8; 1 Samuel 16, verses 1–13; 2 Samuel 21, verses 1–14; 2 Samuel 24, verses 15–25; Matthew 1, verses 1–17 Today's conversation is about Lessons 7 & 8 of The David Story: Shepherd, Father, King taught by Hillsdale Professor Justin Jackson. Is it ever right to run? Is it ever not a cowardly thing to do? Yes! In fact, there are many times we are commanded to flee certain sins. In this message we see the necessity to run away from the rule of Absolom, and it was no cowardly thing to do, but a sign of complete allegiance to the true king.

Absolom was the perfect picture of a hypocrite. He would do anything to get promoted to the throne, and since he was evil, he had to cover up who he truly was.

Absolom was a character in the Bible that was a perfect picture of Satan. Did he do witchcraft? Maybe not, but he simply lived for self promotion, and that is the epitome of Satan.

Ready for some rough rural Gothic? Kailee Pederson's Sacrifical Animals was one of my top horror novels of 2024. I missed Kailee first time round, but now the book is out in paperback, I jumped at the chance to speak to her. I was NOT prepared for how highbrow this would go though. From a story about toxic families, American Gothic and Chinese mythology, we found our way to opera, classic Latin texts, and more. But we also talk about violence and sex and evil. So it really does cover all the bases. Enjoy! 5/18/25 In what has been called a masterclass of manipulation 2 Samuel 14 and 15 goes into the complicated story of a prince named Absolom. This week's message takes a dive into this story of what may have been the most trying time of King David's life.
We are still taking a break from the “Tale of Two Kings” series, but we do look at David and Absolom, with David as a picture of Christ, and Absolom as a picture of Satan. Please tune in.

My mother passed away a while ago, and her husband wants to put her on a Mormon list to be married eternally. Is that okay? What should we think about channeling and mediums? What about Halloween? And demon possession? Is the church replacing Israel? Is there a second blessing or second portion of the Spirit we receive later? Why did Absolom say he had no successors if he did indeed have children? Is mental illness different from demon possession? 2 Samuel 17-19: David and Absolom Part 3
2 Samuel 13-14:24 David and Absolom pt. 1
At the end of the last episode we saw that the war was over and Absolom was dead. Remember that before the battle, David was willing and wanting to risk his life and lead his troops into battle. He wanted to do this for two reasons, first off, it was what kings did, lead their troops into battle. And secondly, he hoped that if he could enter the battle it would help save his son Absolom's life. David's warriors though, especially his commander in chief Joab thought differently. Joab was convinced that David must stay alive for his kingdom to continue. If he entered the battle and a stray arrow accidentally pierced him he would be dead and Absolom's forces would most assuradly take over and they would crown Absolom as king. Joab knew that David's life was essential to the cause to keeping his kingdom alive so he knew he could not enter the battle he had to say out but Joab also believed that it was crucial that Absolom be killed. There could not be two kings of Isreal, the rebellion had gone too deep. Absolum must die and David must be kept safe. Politically it was too late for reconciliation between father and son, Absolom had to die. The truth is this. During this entire affair wtih David he had not acted as a King, he acted as a doating father. This is kind of ridiculous when you look at his reactions. He did not treat Absolom's rebellion as a rebellion at all. He treated it like a small minor domestic affair that could be settled with a nice group hug between the patries involved. He failed to see Absolom's as a traitor, a rebel who has caused tons of a pain, hurt and suffering to David, his family and the entire nation at large. And that is to say nothing for the 20 thousand men who had just died in a fierce battle in the Woods of Effram. The death of Absolom was good news to the Nation of Isreal, it was good news for David the King, but it was the worst kind of news for David the Father. We remember David's statement from last episode where he said, “Would I had died instead of you Absolom my son, my son.” These were the words of a bereaved and tormented father. The loss of another son, his third son, deeply hurt David and gave him intense sorrow. Yet he was the king, he could not forget his duty, his responsibility to his people, there had been a huge loss, a huge battle, a rebellion, an insurrection in his own kingdom. It was time for reconciliation, it was time to bring the kingdom back together, it was time to be king, to step up and be the king that all his valiant warriors who had just died had fought for, to be that king. Much had to be done and a lot of bitterness had to be taken care of.Joab, who had personally killed Absolom, was frustrated with the way David was acting, he did not like it, and in fact he calls out David to his face. This will be the topic of Pastor Harris's message. Support the Show.

Daily Dose of Hope June 10, 2024 Day 2 of Week 11 Scripture: Numbers 30-33; Psalm 35; Luke 3 Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope Bible reading plan. Let's get right into our Scripture. Today's passage in Numbers is difficult. I'm talking especially about chapter 31. After the Israelites conquer the Midianites, the army returns and Moses gets quite angry at them. Why? Because they allowed the women to live. Now, many of these were the women who had led the Israelite men into sin but still, these guys had minds of their own too. And then there were the children. The boys were killed and the young girls were saved, presumably to be slaves or concubines. This is all very, very hard to swallow. What is going on here? This doesn't seem to be consistent with the character of God. I have to lean into Isaiah 55:8, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. God had a reason for dealing with the Midianites the way he did. We know that God said he would have vengeance against the people of Midian. They were evil in God's eyes. They worshipped many gods and engaged in some pretty horrible rituals to those gods, include child sacrifice and temple prostitution. They were a violent people with no moral compass. That being said, the passage is still troubling and raises questions within me that I can't answer. But when we find ourselves in a place like this, we are left at a crossroads: we can either call God to account based on our twenty-first century human understandings OR we acknowledge our limited grasp of God and his purpose and plan for people. I have intentionally chosen the latter. I am a mere human with my limited understanding and doubts. Yet, God has never failed me, even if there are times I simply don't understand. I have chosen to trust God and not get too preoccupied with some passages in Numbers when I have a whole Bible to learn and understand. Remember, we have to always look at the whole narrative of Scripture and not get too worked up over a passage. I hope that offers some help and didn't muddy the waters too much. Psalm 35 is another Psalm of David. In it, King David is detailing the sins of his enemies and asking God to conquer them. There is a desperation to his words. While this psalm isn't connected to a specific instance in David's life, there were certainly several times in which David could have potentially written it, including when Saul was after him or when Absolom wanted him dead. I think it's normal to want revenge against one's enemies but on the other side of the cross, we have different marching orders. Jesus was pretty clear about loving one's enemies, something pretty revolutionary at the time. Think about Paul's letter to Romans 12:17-21, Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good. With that, let's move on to our New Testament passage for today, Luke 3. This text, when John baptizes Jesus, marks the beginning of Jesus' public ministry. This call to ministry was accompanied by the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove and confirmed by God's voice from heaven. It is a beautiful picture of the Trinity. What's interesting and even a bit puzzling about this scene is that John's baptism was one of repentance. It was for sinners to come, repent, and be cleansed. But Jesus was sinless. He had no need of a sinner's baptism. And yet, he chose to go through the ritual. Jesus sought to identify with the people he came to save. Some of you will recall talking about the incarnation during Advent, as we prepare for Christmas. Incarnation is a churchy word that refers to God coming to earth to become a human being. It's in the incarnation that Jesus becomes one of us. Jesus goes to the people, identifies with them, and gives them a real-life demonstration of who God is and how much God loves them. The baptism was simply the beginning. Please be sure to read through all of chapter 3. It's worth spending some time reflecting on John the Baptist's ministry as he prepares the way for his cousin, Jesus. What must that have been like for John? The chapter closes with a genealogy of Jesus. Take a moment and read through this genealogy again, as well as the genealogy in Matthew 1. What are the similarities and differences? How does each author go about telling the story of Jesus' family? Just a reminder, tomorrow through the end of this week, you will be hearing Pastor Roberto's voice. He is brilliant and I can't wait to hear his take on the end of Numbers and the beginning of the book of Deuteronomy. Blessings to all of you, Pastor Vicki
Welcome to the Relational Grace Podcast where we share the teachings of Pastor Nick Harris who taught us that Christianity is not a religion; it's a relationship. I'm your host Jamie Russell, Pastor Harris's son.Last episode Pastor Harris talked about Absalom, Son of David, as he made his plans for a coup d'etat against his very own father. He left Jerusalem making his home in Hebron, which was the first capital city of David. Apparently David found nothing curious about this, he had no suspicion as to Absalom's move. He was totally unaware when the coup erupted. This seems really odd, as it takes a great deal of time organizing a revolt, in fact, Absolom may have spent as much as four years time planning it and yet David had not the smallest inkling of an idea that he was planning it. Absalom was extremely shrewd in his dealing with the revolt. Somehow Absalom had begun to win all the hearts of the people of Israel. He had somehow made them think that a man who had just taken revenge on his brother and had killed him was a man devoted to justice. He seemed to convince people that words were more profitable than actions. He was even able to lure 200 of Jerusalem's best citizens to Hebron to join him. Therefore cunning and deceit seemed to be some of his best qualities. He used them many times in his dealings leading up to the revolt and during the revolt. He used them to induce the majority of the men of Israel to turn against his very own father, their great King David. Even David's own tribe of Judah was ready to abandon David and follow Absalom. This man was capable of much. For this reason and many others, he proves though that he was not fit to be king of God's chosen Nation. But his father does not come out of the story looking that great either. In fact, he gets had by his own son who was able to pull the rug right out from under him without even seeing it. He didn't smell the revolt for the four long years that his son was in Hebron. So David does not look that great either, in fact he looks quite complacent. For this reason it looks like he was out of touch; it left room for Absolom to come in and steal their hearts. A big lesson learned here is this: It is essential for good leaders to remain in touch with the people of their nation. All this said, neither David nor his son were the most ideal leaders. But at least David was a man after God's own heart and he showed this when Jerusalem was about to be laid under siege he fled and protected it. And Absalom, as Pastor Harris will demonstrate, cared nothing for people, he did not care how many people died as long as he remained in power. So let's jump into the seventeenth episode of The Saga of David series, titled, “David's Sons Revolt”.Support the show
Actor Ray Liotta was coming off crtitical acclaim for his star making turn in Martin Scorcese's Goodfellas and was looking for a vehicle that would turn him into a bonafide movie star. For others that path was paved by action movies so Liotta signed on to 1994's No Escape hoping it would catapult him to international acclaim. As the stoic, brooding J. T. Robbins, Liotta was able to not only show brawn, but also brains as he attempts to escape the island penal colony of Absolom and it's violent de facto leader Marek played by Stuart Wilson. The film also boasts Ernie Hudson, Kevin Dillon, Kevin J. O'Connor and Lance Henriksen. Dan and Vicky discuss the actioner along with some recently seen movie and TV shows like Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, Beyonce's Renaissance, The Holdovers and Hulu's The Bear. Psalm 124 is the fifth of the “Assent Songs” and the second that is ascribed to be written by David. Remember the contempt and ridicule of Psalm 123? It has now been mixed with anger (v. 3) and become open hostility in Psalm 124. There are several occasions as to when David might have written it. After he was anointed king, it wasn't long till Saul was trying to set traps and kill him. Or possibly, shortly after he became king, the Philistines attack Israel. Or even later when his son Absolom rose up against him. In each situation the LORD gave him deliverance and this psalm may have been his song of thanksgiving to the Lord. Some believe that Hezekiah might have used this psalm when he was attacked by the Assyrians, but God sent an angel that killed over 180,000 enemy soldiers in one night and gave deliverance. It might have been used again later when Nehemiah and the people were repairing the walls and gates of Jerusalem, the surrounding nations ridiculed them (Neh. 2:19-20; 4:1-5) and then threatened to attack them (Neh. 4:7-23). Nehemiah's words "Our God will fight for us" (Neh. 4:20) remind us of 124:1-2 and 8. We may not have entire nations and armies opposing us, but we do face emergencies that are more than we can handle. That is when we turn to the Lord for help, because He is on our side and helps us with these emergencies. In verses 1-2, we see the sudden attack of the enemy. The phrase "rose up" gives the image of a sudden ambush, a sneak attack that might have defeated Israel, except the Lord was on their side. "If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Rom. 8:31). Our enemy Satan does not give advance warning of his attacks; therefore, we must be sober and vigilant (1 Peter 5:8), put on the whole armor of God (Eph. 6:10-18), and be alert in our praying. God promised His chosen people that He would curse those who cursed them (Gen. 12:3), and He has kept that promise. If we are walking with the Lord, we need not feel unprepared for the enemy's sudden attacks. Next in verses 3-5, the enemy is pictured as a great flood overwhelming Israel. Here is a situation where we stand helpless as the problem gets worse and worse. The psalmist feared that the raging waters of persecution would sweep over him and his people and that they would be swallowed up forever. Jeremiah pictured the Babylonian captivity of Israel as Nebuchadnezzar swallowing the nation (Jer. 51:34, 44). But if the Lord is on our side, He will provide a way of escape. In verse 6, the enemy is pictured as a beast which is often a biblical picture of persecution. There are twelve words in the Hebrew language for lions, which indicates that the Jewish people in that day took wild beasts seriously. Jeremiah compared Babylon to a lion (Jer. 4:7; 51:38), and Peter compared Satan to a prowling lion (1 Peter 5:8). Like a cunning animal, Satan stalks us and waits until we have relaxed our guard, and then he pounces. But the Lord is stronger than Satan, and if we are abiding in Him, we can win the victory. Finally in verses 7-8, the enemy is pictured laying a hidden trap. We must use the Word of God to throw light on our path so we can detect and avoid the devil's traps (Psalm 119:105; 91:1-3; 1 Tim. 3:7; 6:9; 2 Tim. 2:24-26). The picture is that of a helpless bird who walked into the trap in order to eat the food. Satan always has fascinating bait to offer. The Lord may allow us to fall into a trap, but nobody can keep us when He wants us to be free. The Lord not only opened the trap but broke it so it cannot be used again! The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ has broken the dominion of sin and death, and we can walk in freedom through Jesus Christ. Praise God, we don't need to fear! We are not helpless! Because "Our help is in the name of the LORD, Who made heaven and earth" (v. 8). And He is on our side! God bless!
This week on Toilet Radio: We're wrapping up loose threads on our quest to get to the bottom of insidious global conspiracies. We started this last week but we had no idea just how deep the rabbit hole would go. This time around we spend a good chunk of time hearing out Son of Liberty, Jon Schaffer's ramblings about a conspiracy to create the Federal Reserve from a shadowy meeting at Jeckyll Island. Ol' Jonny's got some wild ideas about what constitutes slavery in a country that literally practiced slavery. BUT ALSO, we're getting learned about Remote Viewing, thanks to Cephalic Carnage which was entirely new to us. The HAARP Machine go off on a conspiracy regarding avian flu in a quaint time before COVID, and bands like Absolom, Exarsis, and Kremlin go off on literally every conspiracy theory there is. To kick off a new year of Talking Scared, I've gone and hooked us a big guest, with a whopper of a story. John Langan is the author of The Fisherman. It's one of the great works of supernatural fiction written this century, but its story doesn't end at its back-cover. The strange mythology of The Fisherman extends beyond, swimming further downstream, to pop its monstrous head above the surface in John's wider universe of short stories and novellas. In this special episode, we talk at length about The Fisherman – about the classic books, real-world legends and cultural beliefs that inspired it, and about the process of building a whole new mythos. John is the poet-scholar of horror. This is the class you wish you'd taken in college. Enjoy! Alex and I had a great time reviewing the Jesus Revolution and the part Hope Chapel played in it.It was what historians call a spiritual awakening. I only realized that as it ended. Until then my peer group mostly thought we were smarter than those who had preceded us.It couldn't be called just a revival as it wasn't about reviving a dying church but effected a transformation in the outside culture. One of the early earmarks of the movement was the presence of miracles. Mostly we saw people delivered from the grip of hard drugs without counseling or treatment. But there were healings, events involving protection from fires and extreme weather, and of course healings. The Jesus Revolution movie is worth watching as it catches much of what the Spirit was doing. However, it would need to be a prolonged series to fully depict those exciting times. After others view the film I get asked, "Did those things really happen?" The answer is that those things did happen but in a larger sense than could be depicted on film. The baptisms were bigger. The miracles were everyday events. Chuck Smith was a great Bible teacher going into it and Lonnie Frisbee was no rebel but had a supernatural anointing that caused some leaders discomfort.I hope the talk Alex initiated will strengthen you in your own hunger for more from God.For more from Alex check his website at dandelionresourcing.com. More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music
What is your natural response to the love, power, and glory of God? Do your lips exclaim hallelujah? Do you sing with joy? Do you praise with a heart of gratitude? That's what Brandon Lake's song "Gratitude" leads us to do. And it's reflective of another song in Scripture. King David was in a literal wilderness season when he wrote Psalm 63. Let's consider his song together in light of his circumstances.
