Eleanor Thompson, 79, the first Black member elected to the Beacon City Council, died Jan. 17. She was born April 23, 1946, the daughter of Rosalee Thompson, who in 1962 moved from Charleston, South Carolina, to New York City to provide opportunities for her daughters, Eleanor and Vera. Rosalee died in 2019. Eleanor earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Lehman College and, in 2000, a master's degree in education from Columbia University. She was a schoolteacher in New York City before moving to Beacon. After selling real estate for 18 years, she retired to Texas in 2010. Eleanor was elected as a Democrat in November 2001 to represent Ward 2, when she was 55, defeating Don Gallo, the Republican incumbent, 391-321. It was standing-room-only at her swearing-in, and the other officials sworn in that day, including Member-At-Large (and current mayor) Lee Kyriacou, all used the Thompson family bible. Eleanor was re-elected in 2003, then elected to an at-large seat in 2005 and 2007. She also ran for the state Assembly in 2006 but lost to incumbent Thomas Kirwan. In 2007, as a board member at the Howland Cultural Center, Eleanor envisioned a program that would connect communities through music. "When it comes to cultural diversity, we're all students," she said. Her advocacy led to the creation of the Gospel Cafe, according to HCC. Eleanor began painting, drawing and taking photographs at age 9. In an interview with the Poughkeepsie Journal in 2000, she recalled visiting her aunt and cousin in Newburgh and painting pictures of the Hudson River, of men and boys fishing on the banks and of the ferry. (She described herself as "a water person.") She said she had recently thrown herself into sculpture after taking a class at Columbia. "It was the best thing that happened to me," she said. She focused on female figures. "My whole thing is I want to give my sisters out there some recognition — the brown ones, the black ones, the white ones, the yellow ones — we are fantastic." With the support of longtime HCC director Florence Northcutt, Eleanor expanded the focus of art exhibits to include more women and artists of color. She contributed to shows such as Women Artists of the Hudson Valley in 2000 and A Celebration of Women of Color in the Arts in 2006. In 2019, she returned to Beacon with her grandson, Bobby, for The 25th Anniversary of African-American Artists in the Hudson Valley. In addition to her civic service, Eleanor co-founded the Young Artists' Mentoring Project; served as program director at the Martin Luther King Community Center; established a curriculum for the Partnership with Schools and Businesses; and was a dedicated member of the Beacon Light Tabernacle Seventh-day Adventist Church. Among her awards: the Empire State Federation of Women's Clubs' Community Award (2004), the Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Award (2005), the Shirley Chisholm Legacy Award (2005) and the inaugural Beacon Community Award presented by Beacon City Concerned Citizens. A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday (March 1) at Beacon Light Tabernacle, 1568 Route 9D, in Wappingers Falls. Memorial donations may be made to the Howland Cultural Center (dub.sh/thompson-hcc).

Send a text  Join us for another fascinating episode where our new friends Richard and V shared their experience of leaving the Seventh-day Adventist Church, a movement that was formally organized in 1863 in Battle Creek, Michigan. The church grew out of the failed Millerite prophecy of 1844 and was heavily shaped by the writings and authority of Ellen G. White, whose teachings still strongly influence doctrine and culture. The couple explained that during 2020 and the COVID pandemic, the isolation created space to question beliefs they had long been discouraged from examining. As they studied church history and doctrine more critically, they began to recognize patterns they described as cult-like: elevated prophetic authority, fear-based end-times teachings, pressure to conform, and a tendency to frame doubt as spiritual failure.Today, the church is governed globally by the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, currently led by Erton C. Köhler. While it presents itself as a mainstream Christian denomination, the couple felt the organization's control over members' beliefs, lifestyles, and information created an unhealthy spiritual environment.Leaving was not easy, but they described it as liberating—allowing them to reclaim personal autonomy, re-evaluate faith on their own terms, and step outside a system they no longer believed was rooted in truth or transparency. Missionaries in the late 19th and early 20th century often didn't speak the language and didn't know anyone in the new country they were going to, at least at first. Missionary boards typically sent couples like Joseph and Jennie Westphal into the field together so that they would not have to go it alone.  But this didn't stop single women missionaries in South America like Lucy Post and Olive Westphal from carrying out their calling of service. They found ways to build support networks of community, friends and other family members so their work was impactful and long-lasting, laying the foundation for medical clinics, hospitals, churches and universities that are still present today.  Thank you to our guests, Dr. Silvia Sholtus & Pastor Kayla Goodman.  Special thanks to Ashlee Chisholm from the General Conference Archives for helping us find photos of Jennie Westphal and Lucy Post.  Explore More Article | Lucy Belinda Post (1845–1937) - Encyclopedia of Seventh-day Adventists  Article | Jennie Westphal - “Parents Par Excellence” - Review and Herald Vol 145 No. 31, 1968  Book | “Women in leadership in the beginnings of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in South America“ by Silvia Sholtus, Margarita Biaggi (Translator)  This episode mentions Lucy Post, Luisa Post, Frank and Mary Westphal, Joseph and Jennie Westphal, Olive Westphal, River Plate University, Argentina, Brazil and South America.

In this episode of Prove All Things, Robert Onsando critiques the Seventh-day Adventist Church's foundational doctrines, focusing on Ellen G. White's elevated role and the controversial teaching of the 1844 investigative judgment. He challenges the church's interpretation of communion frequency, the meaning of “high Sabbaths,” and its justification of failed prophecies, arguing these ideas are unbiblical and misleading. Robert also shares about his ministry in Kenya, where he teaches biblical feasts and calendars despite resistance and calls for support in spreading the gospel.

Part 9 It has been well said that the only distinctive doctrine of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is the doctrine of the Investigative Judgment.  This doctrine lies at the heart of Adventism and is woven into the fabric of how the Adventist Church views atonement.  In short, the doctrine of the Investigative Judgment teaches that in 1844, Jesus Christ began a work of judgment, examining the records of all professing believers to determine their worthiness to obtain heaven.  When one asks what is the standard by which they shall be judged, the answer is returned, the law of God!  According to Ellen G. White:  “All who have truly repented of sin, and by faith claimed the blood of Christ as their atoning sacrifice, have had pardon entered against their names in the books of heaven; as they have become partakers of the righteousness of Christ, and their characters are found to be in harmony with the law of God, their sins will be blotted out, and they themselves will be accounted worthy of eternal life.”   The doctrine of the Investigative Judgment is a damnable doctrine as it not only adds law to grace and works to faith, but it denies the finished work of the cross since it maintains that from 1844, Christ entered the second and last phase of His atoning ministry. It is a work of investigative judgment, which is part of the ultimate disposition of all sin (SDA Fundamental Belief 24). How can there be a final phase of atonement when Calvary WAS the final atonement?  We shall explore this at length in this teaching, along with the infamous Sanctuary doctrine. Part 7 As one combs the pages of the New Testament Epistles, one will find that nine of the ten commandments written on tablets of stone are also explicitly prohibited by the New Testament writers except for one, “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Ex. 20:8).   Ironically, the only commandment of the ten, not brought across into the new, is the commandment which Seventh-day Adventists major on the most. To understand why the Seventh-day Adventist Church places such emphasis on the seventh day, one has to first understand the emphasis placed upon this day by its prophet, Ellen G. White.  In this teaching, we shall take an in-depth look at what Mrs White and the Adventist Church teach regarding the continuing biding nature of the Sabbath and ask ourselves whether it is the same as what the Bible teaches. Part 6 According to the Seventh-day Adventist Church, love for Jesus Christ is manifested by one's obedience to the Ten Commandments; without obedience to these commandments, no man shall enter the kingdom of heaven. The goal of this teaching is to establish what commandments Jesus had in mind when He said, “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love” (Jn. 15:10). In addition to answering this question, consideration shall be given to arguments raised by Seventh-day Adventists to support their claim for the continuing binding nature of the Ten Commandments.  Download teaching notes (pdf) https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/bethesdashalom/6_Answering_Adventist_Arguments_for_Law.pdf

My guest today is Stephen Barry.Stephen is a massage therapist living in the Nashville, Tennessee area.Stephen is someone who I have wanted to have on the podcast for years, so it's truly a delight to finally share this conversation here.Stephen originally connected with me after I was on a podcast called Everyone's Agnostic.  We had a number of things in common including our upbringing in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.  And stepping away from that faith community.  Stephen also recognized my last name and asked if I was related to Doug Tilstra.  My father-in-law, Doug Tilstra, had been one of his professors in university and, as you'll hear in Stephen's story, has remained a prominent friend and support to him.In our conversation today, Stephen shares pieces of his story of leaving religion, coming out as gay, nearly giving up on life, and re-finding community, faith, and love.  Embedded in this is an amazing story of friendship and making life less difficult for each other.Stephen, thank you so very much for this conversation.  I feel so grateful to be connected.  Thank you for sharing your stories with authenticity, vulnerability, love, and compassion.  You make the world a better place! If you'd like to connect with Stephen, you'll find links below.https://www.facebook.com/barryorchestra Make Life Less Difficult~ Support:buymeacoffee.com/lisatilstra

Part 4 The question that has plagued the Church of Jesus Christ for the duration of its 2000-year history is the question that shall be answered in this teaching.  The oldest heresy in Christianity was not the denial of the deity of Christ. The oldest heresy can be traced to the fifteenth chapter of the Book of Acts, to a sect of men who came down from Judea to the Gentile congregations of Antioch and the surrounding regions, who began teaching the Christians that Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved (Acts 15:1).  Thank God that this question was not left open for proceeding generations to play guess-work.  The answer to the question; Is the Law of Moses binding upon Christians?, was answered conclusively 2000 years ago in the first council of Jerusalem, and its conclusions have been set out in that 15th chapter of Acts.  One would think that this evidence would be enough to turn any law-seeking believer away from such pursuit and to guide them back to safety.  The fact remains, some 2000 years on, the question: Is the Law of Moses binding upon Christians?  For some, it is a resounding yes!  Leading the way in this is the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which for more than 160 years has promoted the continuing binding nature of the Law upon all.      Download teaching notes (pdf) https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/bethesdashalom/4_Is_the_Law_Binding_Upon_Christians.pdf

Part 3 Ellen G. White had over 2000 visions during her lifetime and the content of those visions resulted in over 100,000 pages of writings which the Seventh-day Adventist Church consider to be inspired by the Holy Spirit and a continuing and authoritative source of truth. Ellen White claimed that her visions and writings were not simply expressions of her ideas, but originated from God. What do you call a prophet who prophesies things that don't come to pass?  What do you call someone who steals from others' works while trying to pass them off as writings inspired by God?  In this teaching, further investigation is given to Mrs White's prophecies and writings to determine whether or not she was a prophet called by God.    Download teaching notes (pdf) https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/bethesdashalom/3_Was_Ellen_G_White_a_Prophet.pdf

Based on his calculations of Daniel 8:14, Miller predicted that Christ would return to earth around 1843–1844.The Great Disappointment (October 22, 1844): When Jesus did not return on the predicted date, many of Miller's followers abandoned the movement. However, a small group believed the date was correct but misunderstood the nature of the event (we will get into this more when we discuss some of the false doctrines they promote).Formation of the Seventh-day Adventist ChurchThe Sabbath Movement: A group led by Joseph Bates and others began emphasizing the importance of observing Saturday (the biblical Sabbath) as a day of worship, based on the fourth commandment. The Sanctuary Doctrine: After the Great Disappointment, followers like Hiram Edson taught that Jesus did not return to earth but instead entered the heavenly sanctuary to begin a new phase of His ministry (the “investigative judgment”).Ellen G. White (1827–1915): Considered a prophetess by Adventists, she played a central role in shaping SDA beliefs and practices. Her visions and writings helped unify the movement and promote distinctive doctrines.Official Organization1863: The Seventh-day Adventist Church was officially organized in Battle Creek, Michigan, with approximately 3,500 members.Expansion: By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the SDA Church grew rapidly, emphasizing evangelism, education, and healthcare.Today's SDA ChurchGlobal Reach: The SDA Church has grown into a worldwide denomination with over 21 million members.Focus Areas: It emphasizes education, healthcare, and missionary work while holding to its unique doctrines.Part II: The Similarities and DifferencesSimilarities:The belief in the TrinityThe humanity and deity of Christ (but there is a little twist here)Salvation by grace through faith (but we will discuss this)Authority of Scripture (but we will discuss this as well)The Second Coming of ChristResurrection of the DeadWhile there are many similarities in the beliefs between SDA and orthodox Christianity, there are some disturbing differences that Christians need to be aware of when considering SDA's. Observance of the SabbathThis is pretty deep. They firmly believe that the 4th commandment to observe the Sabbath is still enforced today and this part of the law was not “fulfilled” in Christ. SUNDAY LAW: They associate Sunday...
