We talk quite a bit about what it's like during postpartum, the struggles birthing people and families go through throughout the birth journey, and how to be more empathetic and supportive as a community to birthing people and their families! Davinah is a Doula in the Seattle area. They provide doula services for pregnancies, postpartum, pregnancy losses, and abortion! You can find her at @rootedbirthdoula on IG & on her website at bornrooted.com. In the 1990s and early 2000s, free trade was considered an unalloyed good. But now, policymakers and economists agree that global trade creates winners and losers—and they acknowledge that we've never really tried to fairly compensate the losers. Economist Dean Baker and Seattle Port Commissioner Ryan Calkins help us try to imagine a more equitable way forward on international trade.  Dean Baker is a senior economist at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, an organization he co-founded in 1999. Sincerely, America is inspired by the immigrant experience in an effort to create empathy and understanding for each other by reaching into the past to see the history of our community. The first play of the production, American Dreams, a play by Linda Britt and directed by Ellen Peters, focuses on the immigrant experience in the U.S., an experience which varies widely depending on country of origin, race, religion, age, and location allowing the characters to focus on the aspect of their story that is most meaningful to them. The second play of the production, The Art of Remembering, a play by Adina L. Ruskin and directed by Chevi Chung, shows three actors embodying different facets of a young woman who returns home to bury her father. While there, she cleans out her closet and with each object she discovers, she touches on the stories of her ancestors that are as diverse as a feisty Polish-Jewish émigré taking America by storm, an Argentine who stands against his country's repression, and a woman who witnesses the fall of the Berlin Wall. Together, Sincerely, America reminds us of the beauty of life and the importance of our past. Director Ellen Peters has earned a B.A. in theatre and psychology from Bates College in Maine and an Ed.M. in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from Harvard University. She has also studied improvisational comedy. Ellen has performed on stage and screen with professional and community productions and has directed and taught at community theatres in Maine and in Washington, D.C., all prior to her move to Tacoma in 2011. While in Maine, she served on the LA Arts Board and the Lewiston Auburn Public Theatre (AEA) Board. As Chair of the Education Committee, Ellen spearheaded a school liaison program, which engaged a more diverse audience. Since moving to Washington state, Ellen has served on the Board of Tacoma Little Theatre and acted and/or directed with Tacoma Little Theatre, Dukesbay Productions, Toy Boat Theatre, and Found Space Productions. She has become increasingly interested in the impact of theatre on the audience and the larger community and focuses her interests on scripts which prompt discussion and educate and challenge. Ellen is delighted to be a part of the Tacoma arts community and is an administrator at the University of Puget Sound. Producer Chevy Chung: Chevi Chung is the visionary behind Empathos Company and a theatre artist currently based in Tacoma. She has worked in London, Los Angeles, and Seattle. She holds an MA in Acting from the Guildford School of Acting, pursued her undergraduate theatre studies at the University of La Verne, and earned a BA in Organizational Leadership from Brandman University. Chevi is energized by stories about People of Color, women, and history. Actor Nicole Lockett: Nicole is the Senior Paralegal and Office Manager of Watson Immigration Law. She received her Associate of Applied Sciences in Paralegal Studies from Highline Community College in 2010. She holds an Associate of Arts degree with an emphasis on Performance Arts, English, and Anthropology from Green River Community College, where she graduated with honors and as a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Among her many talents, she has a passion for the arts and animals! She is an enthusiastic and avid actor who performs regularly at local community theatres. Multi-talented Nicole is additionally a semi-professional choreographer in the Puget Sound Area

When the first white settlers arrived in the Puget Sound Area, they found a diverse group of native tribes already living there. Unfortunately, coexistence did not work, and blood was shed. Governor Isaac Stevens took a heavy-handed approach to negotiate treaties, and many native groups were forced on to reservations. Others chose to fight back, leading to one of the few times the United States Marine Corp was involved in a fight with natives during the Battle of Seattle.

In this thrilling episode, Jok'Tot's in a weird sound-off with an evil little dude in a green cloak and matching pantsuit. Hlina's there. And Anthony? In this episode, we gave up shaving. Marc gave up shaving his face, and you'll have to listen to find out what Julie gave up shaving. We talk about the history of various shaving practices, the social implications of shaving and not shaving, and whether the Puget Sound Area (i.e. Seattle and Olympia) is a sanctuary where body hair can live a long and prosperous life. Spoiler alert - one of us liked this experiment, the other turned into a porcupine (according to a 7-year old).

Sonia Nazario on a train in Mexico Sonia Nazario, author of “Enrique’s Journey: the story of a boy’s dangerous odyssey to reunite with his mother” talks to Steve Scher about the plight of one of the tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors who illegally cross Mexico by freight train and then the U.S. border in order to reunite with their families in the U.S.She spoke to Seattle area audiences April 2015, about America’s Immigration Dilemma and the policies that might help these families. Tens of thousands of Central American children, unaccompanied by parents or other adults are hopping freights and fleeing the drug cartels, the gangs and the thuggish police in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Almost 50 thousand arrived by the middle of the summer of 2014, when the surge captured media and political attention. These children are often robbed, raped, beaten or kidnapped along the way. Thousands are detained in detention cells for months before their fate- often deportation is determined.  There are at least 5 holding facilities in the Puget Sound Area alone.  Though this story exploded onto the public mind last year, it has been a humanitarian crisis for years. Journalist Sonia Nazario won a Pulitzer Prize for her LA Times coverage in 2003 for “Enrique’s Journey,” a Honduran boy’s search for his mother who emigrated to the U.S.  It became a best selling book in 2006.   In 2014, her book gathered attention again, as the rising flood of young children peaked at about 60 thousand by the end of the year.   Numbers are lower in 2015, as the U.S. has paid Mexico interdict the migrants before they reach our border. However the violence, criminality and chaos these children are fleeing has continued unabated.Sonia Nazario’s book is assigned in schools and universities around the world.
