Mindful Minds is a podcast that centers on learning how to be mindful of important topics such as mental health, sex, social justice, trauma, deconstruction, and more! Hosted by Fina of Serafina Blog, join us as we learn how to be more mindful together.
The Mindful Minds podcast is a true gem in the world of podcasts. From the moment I started listening, I felt an instant connection to the host, Serafina. Her story and vulnerability resonate deeply with me, and it's clear that she has created this podcast with a genuine desire to help others navigate their own trauma and healing journeys. The discussions on this podcast are not only enlightening but also incredibly healing and relevant to my own life right now. It's such a comforting feeling knowing that I am not alone in my journey of deconstructing my faith and processing my trauma.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is the thought, research, and care that Serafina puts into each episode. She approaches every topic with honesty and clarity, making sure to provide great resources and engaging conversations. It's evident that she invests time into understanding each subject matter thoroughly, which results in insightful discussions that leave a lasting impact on listeners like myself. Moreover, Serafina's sensitive and inquisitive interviewing style creates a safe space for her guests to share their stories deeply and authentically.
Another significant aspect of The Mindful Minds podcast is its inclusivity and compassion towards people from various backgrounds. Whether you have experienced trauma within evangelical Christianity or any other toxic system, this podcast provides a much-needed space for healing and growth. The discussions around taboo topics are handled with grace and empathy, encouraging listeners to expand their knowledge and challenge societal norms.
While there aren't many negative aspects to this podcast, one thing worth mentioning is that some episodes may be triggering for individuals who are still processing their trauma. While Serafina handles these topics delicately, it's important for listeners to be aware of their emotional well-being before diving into certain episodes.
In conclusion, The Mindful Minds podcast is an absolute must-listen for anyone navigating their own deconstruction journey or seeking healing from past traumas. Serafina's dedication to creating a safe and compassionate space for discussions is truly commendable, and the impact this podcast has had on my own healing journey cannot be understated. I highly recommend this podcast to anyone looking to embrace intentional living, personal growth, and a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Mindful Minds entered my life in a time when I was at my loneliest and my most depressed. In so many ways, this project saved my life. It gave me purpose, It gave me a reason to stick around.I turned 25 this week, and I don't recognize the 21 year old who sat down at her computer and googled, “how to start a podcast.”In the last 4 years, she has grown and healed and gained so much confidence and peace and joy.She has interviewed her heroes and learned from strangers.I am so proud of her, and so proud of this community.Thank you for your kindness and your support with this decision. Thank you for cheering me on and for accepting my decision to rest. The fact that so many strangers have rallied around me and encouraged me for the last 3 years is unreal.I am so proud of you all and how you've chosen to grow and heal.I hope you know that it's okay to rest too.To my 67 guests: you have changed my life. You listened, you taught, and I am so honored to have continued to connect offline with so many of you. You made this podcast. Your expertise is what spearheaded this vision. To the 48 countries, and 821 cities. To the thousands and thousands of listeners. Thank you thank you thank you. You turned a hobby into a community. And one last time: to end our time, unclench your jaw, take a deep breath, and remember: you can always learn, you can always grow, and you can always choose to live your life in a more mindful way.Goodbye for now,FinaPlease rate us 5 stars and leave us a review! Trigger warning: homophobia/transphobia, ableism, racism, the death of a young child & healing culture trauma, suicide, religious trauma, self harm (and scarring) and depression, and exorcisms/demonic expressionThis week we have the lovely Kelley, Kelly Anne, & Emma (she/her) of @womanbeingpodcast on to talk about coping with the harm done while a part of fundamentalist evangelicalism. For many, including myself, it is a hard pill to swallow to come to terms with how you caused direct and indirect harm while in religion. It is easy to get defensive and can be really tricky to talk about. In this episode, we unpack the events that impacted us and were a catalyst to start deconstructing, how to take accountability, and how we've learned to sit in the nuance. Woman Being is a community of people who host conversations in order gain perspective and see the humanity in others. This project was birthed out of a close group of friends getting lost in conversation so enriching that we decided to extend the invitation in the form of a podcast. They hope that as they explore this big, messy world and dive into the gray that you'll find some gold in the midst of it too. Apologies for some of the weird audio in this episode! We had a few technical difficulties while recording :-( This week we have Kirah (she/her) of @thestrology on to talk about all things astrology! For a lot of people who grew up in religion, astrology was OFF limits. In this episode, we discuss the roots and realities of astrology, along with how to use it to heal. Kirah is a professional astrologer and astrology teacher and consultant whose practice is rooted in the Hellenistic tradition. As a queer Black astrologer, Kirah is passionate about intersectionality and accessibility for those who want to learn astrology. If you want to follow Kirah or work with her, you can find her online @thestrology and at thestrology.com as well as her podcast, Cosmic Guidance For All! BUCKLE UP B*TCHES!!! In this episode, we breakdown the 2016 Pure Flix film, "I'm Not Ashamed." This movie covers the story of Rachel Joy Scott and the 1999 Columbine Shooting: with lots of Christian propaganda and historical inaccuracy mixed in.Come along with me as I cringe and critique this monstrosity of a movie.Quick trigger warning for folks: talk about school shootings & gun violence, SA, su*cide, depression, addiction, ableism, purity culture, and overall patriarchal Christian misinformation. Also also - if you haven't listened to ep 79, please listen for a MAJOR update on Mindful Mind's future.xoxo Fina Please rate us 5 stars and leave us a review! Please listen to the beginning of this episode for a major update. I cannot thank you all enough for the last 3 years. You have changed my life. Thank you. Trigger warning: homophobia, transphobia, self-hatred, discrimination, hate crimes, mental health distress, addiction, suicide, counseling abuse, emotional abuse, sexual assault & investigations, brief talk about school shootings via Columbine, graphic description of suicide (time stamp: 1:02:00-1:07:00). This week we have the incredible Erin Green (She/They) of REAP (Religious Exemption Accountability Project) on the podcast to talk about homophobia and discrimination at Christian Colleges. Erin (She/They) is the Campus and Alumni Organizer for REAP. They are an affirming biblical scholar and LGBTQIA+ activist. Erin has a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies from Azusa Pacific University and an M.Div. from San Francisco Theological Seminary. If you listened to episode 24, we talk quite a bit about REAP. REAP fights for the safety, bodily autonomy, justice, and human rights of LGBTQIA+ and other communities marginalized at many predominantly white, taxpayer-funded religious schools and colleges. Using campus organizing, storytelling through podcasting, documentary film, and speaking and preaching on campuses throughout the country, REAP empowers students, faculty, staff and alumni at these institutions to advocate for human rights, while shining a light on the dangers and abuses of a major educational pipeline of white Christian Supremacy. If you want to follow REAP and learn more about what they're doing and how to support it, you can visit them online here and follow them @REAP_lgbtq . You can also reach out to REAP if you are a queer student who is facing discrimination or hatred in a religious school. REAP is also releasing a podcast called, “On God's Campus,” soon so keep an eye open for that! Lastly, if you want to follow or connect with Erin directly, you can follow them at @_runningerins_ . COMMUNITY UPDATE - I have rebranded my Tik Tok from @fina__bina to @mindfulmindspod !! If you are looking for our page on Tik Tok, that's where to find all of our deconstruction videos and content. Content warning: We talk about blood, surgery, and medical procedures in this episode! This week we have Isabella (she/her) of @letstalkperiodau to talk about all things menstrual care & chronic illness! This is unlike any other episode we have done, but I felt like it was a really important topic to touch on. For many of us who grew up in religious environments, we didn't learn about our bodies or how to know if something is wrong. In this episode, we talk a lot about PCOS and Endo, and how to treat these conditions, how to recognize them, and how to push against the cultural taboos. I learned SO much in this episode, and to be honest, was quite surprised by how much I didn't know. Isabella's IG account, @letstalkperiodau, is a great educational resource, especially for ex-religious folks. TW: SA, purity culture, misogyny, sexual shame, mass shooting (time stamp: 24:00-27:40), high control religious abuse, queerphobia & homophobiaThis week we have Blair (she/her) of @talkpuritytome on the podcast! Blair has been breaking barriers in the purity culture space for a while now, and was a major pillar of my own deconstruction. In this episode, we are talking about YOUR purity culture experiences! A while back, I asked my IG audience to finish this statement: “Purity culture made me ______.” So this week, we are sifting through your experiences and breaking down the harm that purity culture has done. TW: religious trauma & abuse, going no contact, abusive parental relationships, purity culture, child abuse, high control religious abuse, sexual assault, cult environmentsThis week we have Hannah Beck (she/her) on the podcast to talk all things no contact. She uses her platform to discuss how she navigates mental health issues, religion, being a college student, and queerness amidst overcoming many obstacles! It centers primarily on the Duggar Family, known for TLC's reality show: “19 Kids & Counting,” and how IBLP impacted their children. In this episode, I focus primarily on how IBLP and fundamentalist Christianity as a WHOLE is intrinsically misogynistic, manipulative, abusive, and narcissistic. TW: religious trauma, high control religious environments, religious abuse, religious shame, spiritual abuse, cult environments, sexual assault, sexual abuse, rape, misogyny, patriarchal ethical issues within the church This week we have an enlightening conversation with Katherine Spearing (she/her) of @uncertainpodcast and Tears of Eden. TW: eating disorders (binging & restriction), ableism, self-harm & suicide (15:30-17:00), fatphobia & unrealistic beauty standards, brief mention of SA, body hatred, diet culture, orthorexia This week on Mindful Minds we have Asher Seruya (they/she) of @badashtherapy on the podcast to talk all things ADHD + Eating Disorders. Asher is a psychotherapist, illustrator, and writer who specializes in unpacking eating disorder recovery, weight stigma, Jewish identity, and complex trauma. They brought such amazing insight on the intersection between ADHD & Eating Disorders, and how popular culture and the world's approach to neurodivergence acts as a catalyst with disordered eating. As someone recovering from an ED, this episode was so helpful and validating for me — and I hope it's the same for you.If you'd like to follow Asher and keep up with their work, which I would HIGHLY recommend, you can find her at @badashtherapy on IG and on their website for therapy services. TW: perfectionism, mental health struggles, self-worth struggles/negative self-talk, eating disorders, fatphobiaDoes anyone else identify as a recovering perfectionist? Because I sure do. This week we have an affirming conversation with Dr. Menije (she/her) about perfectionism. Perfectionism is so rooted in our culture, and tends to be a common thread throughout a lot of mental health issues. For me, with my background in religion, I feel that perfection is the root of so many of my anxieties and insecurities, and I'm sure many of you relate. In this episode, we cover the reality of what perfectionism is, how to approach it, and why it's so pervasive. We received such an overwhelming ask for this topic and specifically, for us to bring back the AMAZING Sarah (she/her) of @deconstructingpurityculture to chat with us - so here we are! Buckle up for an almost 2 hour deep dive into part 2 of our purity culture. If you haven't listened to our first episode with Sarah, I would highly recommend it. We talk about all things purity culture from how it can lead to marital abuse to how the lack of consent education teaches adults not to have boundaries. In this episode, we dive DEEP into how purity culture and evangelicalism leads to abusive relationships. We talk about how the lack of privacy and oversharing, the authoritarian nature of pastoral leadership, and the intense coercion within the church lead to abuse, assault, and authoritarian romantic relationships. TW: rape, pro-life propoganda, racism & inequity towards BIPOC, medically assisted suicide, adoption trauma, white savioirism, Christian supremacy, religious trauma Alright y'all, buckle up. This week we have the incredibly intellectual and insightful, Ellie Coburn (she/her), on for a MASSIVE convo about white saviorism, weaponized adoption, abortion access, and Christian supremacy. This is a pretty lengthy and incredibly important conversation. For those of us who grew up in evangelical communities, we are all too familiar with the Christian supremacy and pro-life propaganda that is engrained in adoption conversations. Ellie is someone with personal experience as a foster care parent and adoptive parent, and she has wildly valuable opinions on the topic. If you grew up in mission culture and have been taught that you are meant to “save,” this is the conversation for you. If you want to learn more from Ellie or connect with her, you can connect with her on Instagram @elliecoburn. She also wanted to share a few literary resources for you all!- Torn Apart by Dorothy Roberts- Shattered Bonds by Dorothy Roberts - Jesus and John Wayne by Kristin Kobes Du MezEllie also speaks about a phenomenal article from the Washington Post written by an adult Korean American adoptee, Cynthia Landesberg, centering on the harm that is done by using adoption as a solution to abortion. TW: religious trauma, church trauma, peer pressured emotional trauma, coercion, manipulation, sexual abuse/assault, abuse of power, purity culture trauma, sexism, cult-like behaviors, miracles + healings traumaHappy New Year all! I hope your 2022 was peaceful and mindful, and if it wasn't, I hope you are able to find that in 2023. I wanted to welcome you to 2023 with a special 2 part series. I received a lot of feedback recently about deconstruction and religious trauma, and how so many of you wanted to talk about these topics. Specifically, after a megachurch series I posted on my Tik Tok, you all expressed a sincere interest in talking about the coercion and abusive nature of megachurches. So, let's talk about it. Yesterday I released part 1 of this mini-series, and if you haven't listened to that episode, it gives some great context for this conversation. We chat about healing culture, the capitalism of Christianity, and the fabrication of supernatural occurrences. In this episode, we dive into the beast that is megachurch & mega-pastor production including tours, conferences, and altar calls. We also go in quite a bit, on the similarities between charismatic Christianity and cults, including some conversation surrounding purity culture and blind obedience. And lastly, we talk about how blind obedience and respect for authority leads to a lack of true accountability and therefore leads to abuse and the misuse of power. We also talk a little bit about how the urge to forgive all and wipe one's slate white as snow leads to a cycle of abuse. Mindful Minds is a podcast centered on mindfulness and intentionality. In part 1, we chat about healing and the ableist nature of healing/miracle culture, the harm of health + wealth gospel, and why the mega pastor culture is inherently hypocritical and capitalistic. I talk about why at its core I believe megachurches and mega-pastors are unethical in nature. We will also be releasing a special part 2: Megachurches: Conferences, Cults, and Controversy - tomorrow, January 7th at 6AM PST. TW: death in general, anxiety in general, death anxiety, death of pets, pet OCD, cancer, social anxietyThis week on Mindful Minds, we have Bailey (she/her) of @anxiety.positive to chat about social + death anxiety! We felt that these two subsets of anxiety aren't often talked about enough despite the fact that so many suffer from them! Especially with the isolation of COVID and the constant exposure to death that society has experienced in the pandemic, we felt that these topics were incredibly timely and important. In this episode, we chat about both types of anxieties, what they are, how they appear in our lives or the lives of those we love, and what coping tools we have found that help us cope, heal, and return to neutral! If you want to follow Bailey and her journey, you can check her out on IG @anxiety.positive, and on her other social media channels (Facebook & Tik Tok). We talk about everything from how Christianity can become toxic and discriminatory to what deconstruction actually means to how we've moved past bitterness. We also cover quite a few questions sent in from Tik Tok listeners about religion + deconstruction! This episode serves as a little bit of a follow up to my deconstruction journey in episode 5. I wanted to go more in depth about my personal journey and how I have grown and even changed some perspectives in the past year. Healing and growth involve a lot of change, and I want to be transparent about that.If you want to follow Manni or reach out to her, you can follow her on IG @mannibobanni. Manni is also selling some vintage items at a thrift event in the greater Seattle in November area and you can DM her for more info. She also talks about how work by Richard Rohr has been helpful to her during her deconstruction & reconstruction journeys. Manni also mentions, “It Didn't Start With You” by Mark Wolynn as a trauma resource. If you are looking for additional deconstruction episodes, we have a list of deconstruction episodes at our IG (@serafinablog). “Girl Boner: The Good Girl's Guide to Sexual Empowerment” by August McLaughlin and any of August's other work. We also spend the back half of the episode discussing the intersectionality and nuances of how to decolonize polyamory and how incredibly deeply engrained colonization is in everything around us. I had the honor of having Phillip on my podcast a few weeks back for episode 43 to talk about polyamory. We ended up shifting and talking a TON about religion and deconstruction! So, we decided to partner up again and create this episode, which centers on religious shame for Dear Poly's shame series! I share my personal experience with shame and how it greatly impacted my healing process and trauma journey. TW: human trafficking, familial trafficking, toxic masculinity, harm done by men, sexual assault/abuse, trauma, coercion*DISCLAIMER: This episode was recorded in July, and since then, The Lantern Project has announced that they are closing their doors and George has transitioned out of his role in the organization. The organization is passing it's programs onto other organizations and this information and content is still so important to talk about! But regarding resources, I have added some resources provided by the Lantern Project to continue learning and to continue the movement to stop human trafficking!*This week we have George Treml (he/him), a former staff member at The Lantern Project in Seattle on to talk about human trafficking and how socialization plays into it. George is the former Men's Education Program Coordinator at The Lantern Project, which centers on education and prevention to help end sexual exploitation and trafficking. George and I talk about how the root problems of privilege, masculinity, lopsided power dynamics, and even a lack of consent/sexual education play into human trafficking and its continued harm. This conversation is a lot different from previous podcast episodes, considering it centers on the male perspective and addresses how toxic masculinity and the patriarchy has harmed men as well. This podcast has centered 90% of its episodes on women & non-binary individuals, but I think this perspective sheds light on a very real problem that needs to be talked about! If you want to find more educational resources regarding human trafficking, you can check out, “Making of a girl” on YouTube at (https://youtu.be/ZvnRYte3PAk). You can also find more human trafficking resources at: Washington Trafficking Prevention, World Without Exploitation Youth Coalition, Af3irm Seattle, and Youth Against Sexual Violence. You can find the blog posts I wrote for the Lantern Project at my LP Archive on my website (https://www.serafinablog.com/archivelp).
TW: abortion, sexual assault/rape, suicide (time stamp: 50:56-52:20), abortion ban impacts on BIPOC folks, white saviorism (time stamp: 1:03-1:04)This week we have an essential and educational conversation with the phenomenal Moji of @abortionfront . On 06/24/22, The US Supreme Court overturned Roe V. Wade, revoking the fundamental right to abortion. Firstly, I want to let you all know that I unequivocally stand against the SCOTUS ruling and will do whatever I can to stand for the right to choose and fight for people with uteruses to maintain their bodily autonomy. Additionally, I would like to give a few disclaimers. First off, this episode is CLEAN. We have chose to remove all curse words/bleep them out so that this episode can be more widely distributed. Second, this episode was recorded on 06/25/22. There has been more updated information since we recorded this episode, but we were working with the information we had. Third, we were lucky enough to have Moji and Marie on episode 33 of the podcast (link: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2n5pykMhAJoxNENoVYYOJn?si=be35207fca7c4206), so this is, in a way, a part 2 to that episode. If you are looking for more explanation of what abortion is, check out that episode! This episode will center primarily on Roe and what to do now. Moji and I wanted to sit down and have a conversation addressing this SCOTUS ruling and where we go from here. The first chunk of this conversation is Moji and I speaking about how we, as people with uteruses, have processed this decision. Please cope however you feel you need to. The second part of our conversation centers on what our reality is now that Roe has fallen. We aimed to have this conversation be productive, educational, and upfront. We also mention quite a few resources throughout this episode for both people who need abortion care and for those who want to support and fund the reproductive rights movement. Moji works for Abortion Access Front (@abortionfront on ALL platforms), and they are hosting Operation Save Abortion on July 17th to help train people to join the reproductive rights movement in the capacity they are able to. Go to https://www.aafront.org/operation-save-abortion/ for more info and to sign up! Our missing friend Marie also works for Midwest Access Coalition (@midwest_access_coalition), which is a practical access fund that funds travel costs, food, childcare, etc. for people needing to travel to an abortion (https://midwestaccesscoalition.org ). Lastly, Marie, Moji, & Lizz Winstead host Feminist Buzzkills Live Pod, which is a podcast centering on abortion in an honest and practical way (releases every Friday night). We also mentioned ineedana.com . This platform is used for people to locate clinics that can provide abortion care for you at your point in your pregnancy. We also plugged Plan C & Aid Access, which are both platforms that mail out abortion pills to your home. Lastly, we mentioned a few others, including emotional support from @underthedesknews. You can call 612-293-8550 to trauma dump and chat about your emotions about this decision. LASTLY! I have made a huge master doc with ALL things abortion including resources for people seeking an abortion, looking to learn more, and looking to support/fund abortion care etc etc etc!
