Jenn and I are huge horror fans. I (Scott) love every movie that George Romero has made about Zombies. Bryan Patrick Miller took his love of zombies to a whole new level. Armed with his zombie hunting a car (an old police car) and his steam punk outfit, he could be found at every event in and around Pheonix, AZ. He was a popular character, so much so that the police took pride at the chances that the got to take a picture with the zombie hunter. What no one would have guessed was that behind the steam punk outfit was a killer who murdered at least 2 girls in Pheonix, AZ and perhaps more in Everette, WA. United States Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg visited Jackson Friday to commemorate the beginning of a multimillion-dollar improvement project to about 1.5 miles of Medgar Evers Boulevard. Friday, about a block away from the road's namesake, Medgar Evers and his family home in North Jackson, Buttigieg, joined by U.S. House Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Jackson, Reena Evers Everette, Central District Transportation Commissioner Willie Simmons and others held a groundbreaking to celebrate the beginning of the project. The Medgar Evers Boulevard Project is slated to be completed by 2026. The project is funded through a $20 million grant from Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity Discretionary Grant program in 2021. The City of Jackson will need to put up matching funds as well. The scope of the work will include installing sidewalks and new streetlamps, repairing roads, building medians and even replacing sewer and water drainage infrastructure along the road. Buttigieg said those improvements would be necessary to reconnect the area to the rest of modern Jackson and spur economic development in the area. Buttigieg added that the project represents a key aspect of the civil rights movement, which connects infrastructural needs for better transportation to disadvantaged communities so that everyone has the same opportunities to grow. "As we bear the moral weight of our inheritance, it feels a little bit strange to be talking about streetlights and ports, and highway funding and some of the other day to day transportation needs that we're here to do something about," he said. "Equitable transportation has always been one of the core commitments, and for that reason has also always been one of the most important battlegrounds of the struggle for racial and economic justice and civil rights in this country." Everette, who is Evers' daughter, thanked both Buttigieg and Thompson for their work in Washington D.C. and in Congress to secure the necessary funds for the project. "(It's about) raising the bar of excellence for the community, to have pride in the infrastructure that starts from the very core that goes on to beautification that goes on to the best pride in the world for the communities," Everette said. "I just wanted to say thank you very much." The road's namesake, Evers, was a prominent civil rights activist in Jackson and served as the NAACP's first field secretary until he was assassinated in June 1963 by Byron De La Beckwith, a white man from Greenwood. Thompson said that the money USDOT has given to the city to begin the project should be seen as a steppingstone to other needs throughout the city, and a method to reconnect cities that were split by highways and other projects, leaving some out of the town's growth through the years. "Statistics will show all throughout countries that communities were split by interstate highways, communities were divided," he said. "Here is a way of trying to reconnect and fix some of the errors of that. This is just one of those down payments on making a difference. This down payment, will fix some of the problems associated with years of neglect." Buttigieg added that throughout his time visiting Mississippi communities throughout the last few days, he sees more and more areas that will need to be addressed to establish more equitable transportation, which he said is essential to growing an area. "Better transportation can mean better opportunities for small business and for families," he said. "Good transportation can lead directly to economic opportunity in the same way that lack of access to transportation can cut people off from opportunity. We're here to make sure that transportation connects, that it doesn't divide."

On the season finale of Momentum: A Race Forward Podcast, Everette Thompson-Francois, Race Forward's Vice President of Movement and Capacity Building is joined by Sulma Arias, Executive Director of People's Action for an illuminating and invigorating conversation inspired by the Organizing Revival project launched one year ago. As Executive Director of a national organization that houses more than 40 organizations in 30 states, Sulma grounds her leadership in her two decades of rich community organizing experience with grassroots movements, as well as her own journey as a Salvadoran immigrant to Wichita, Kansas. Sulma's narrative is one that reflects the collective resilience and determination of the thousands of constituents she helps lead in building “the power of the poor and working people in rural, suburban, and urban areas to win change through issue campaigns and elections.”Sulma and Everette's conversation centers around the foundational values and forward looking vision of People's Action, discussing strategic campaigns that empower local communities to create a national movement, the approach deeply rooted in direct action and relational power building. The “Organizing Revival” as it was envisioned, is a testament to the historically enduring spirit of activism for social change. Sulma talks about how this is more than just a strategic reset –– it represents a reaffirmation of community organizing as the bedrock for the large-scale impacts intended to be won, built through the historic wins being created by a new generation of dissenters and organizers. Her insights into the challenges and triumphs of mobilizing communities against the backdrop of at times hostile political and social landscapes offers an important look into the mobilization needed to inspire and sustain movement power.Sulma and Everette also discuss People's Action white paper “The Antidote To Authoritarianism”: a report that addresses the question of building a multiracial and pluralistic democracy with an inclusive economy to defeat the rise in authoritarianism. She talks about how the report, written with insights from experienced organizers dedicated to building power contextualize how the various political, social, economic, and environmental crisis compounding each other are a strategy that is eroding democracy –– and how regrounding the movement for social justice is the most effective practices of community organizing to address this escalating crisis at scale is the strategy that is urgently needed. With the 2024 U.S Presidential Elections approaching, Sulma's words are a reminder of the power vested in collective action. She invites our listeners and wider audiences to not shy away from, but to engage with the challenges of our times –– from the expansion of the climate crisis to the erosion of democratic norms –– through the venerable tradition of organizing. As we wrap up this season of Momentum, we want to – thank our listeners for joining us for four incredible seasons of Momentum: A Race Forward Podcast. It is our privilege to bring you important conversations from our movement, to be able to create incredible work together. The next season of Momentum will kick off next month –– and we're looking forward to having you continuing to join us as a valued listener. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) has the principle responsibility to provide the fullest possible accounting for our missing personnel to their families and our nation. It was created in January of 2015 by merging the Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office and the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command along with several functions of the Air Force Life Sciences Equipment Laboratory. DPAA Media Relation Chief for Outreach and Communications Sean Everette joins us to describe the agency's functions. We are also joined by Clark Baldwin, the nephew of World War II soldier Clifford Strickland, whose remains were just recently identified and returned to the US. There are an estimated 81,000 personnel still missing from conflicts between World War II through the present day. These include 72,115 from World War II, 7,482 from Korea, 1,577 in Vietnam, 126 from the Cold War, 5 from the Gulf Wars and 1 in Libya. DPAA staff is comprised of both members of the various military branches and civilian specialists. One could describe their role and “cold case file” detectives using a variety of resources to accomplish their tasks.  Once remains are identified, the recovery themselves can be complicated and dangerous; from 16,000 foot mountain peaks to remote jungle sites. Clifford Strickland was captured by the Japanese in the Philippines. After surviving the Bataan Death March, he died on July 29, 1942 in the Cabanatuan POW Camp.  The dead from this camp were buried as “unknowns” in a common grave.  Clark says that although his uncle died before he was born, his family kept his memory alive with stories. Eventually they gave up hope that his remains would ever be found. However, Clark's cousin began attending DPAA outreach events. In 2015 they received notice that they may be able to identify Clifford's remains. Clifford's remains were positively identified on December 20, 2023. A key element in the process is having family members submit DNA samples for use in final identification. Listeners with family members still missing can find more information about how to start the process by visiting the DPAA website. TAKEAWAY: “It makes me proud that I am an American and that the DPAA works so hard to fulfill our nation's promise that we will never leave a man behind.”

Join AJ, Mike, and Chris as we delve into the world of Dixie Landings, a Disney resort steeped in the charm of the Antebellum South during the late 19th century. Development and Opening: We explore the resort's development, opening nearly nine months after its sibling, Port Orleans. Dixie Landings boasts a unique thematic design with rustic buildings in Alligator Bayou and elegant mansions in Magnolia Bend. Daroff Design, Inc. of Philadelphia contributes to the resort's interior design, drawing inspiration from mid-1800s tidewater themes and the village's steamboat business. The Backstory: The backstories, sourced from the resort's original fictional newspaper, The Sassagoula Times, and famed Disney historian Jim Korkis, add rich layers to the Dixie Landings narrative. Founded by brothers Colonel J.C. Peace and Everette, the resort's history unfolds through family, community, and the charm of the Old South. The settlers' constructions, growth of Magnolia Bend, and the founding families' stories paint a vivid picture. Accommodations and Amenities: Details of accommodations and amenities are explored, including the 2,048 rooms with various views, the introduction of Royal Guest rooms with themes from Disney movies, and a range of dining options like Boatwright's Dining Hall and Riverside Mill. The hosts cover recreational activities, such as the expansive Ol' Man Island, quiet pools, and various transportation options like buses and water taxis. Change to Port Orleans and Modern Updates: The episode covers the significant change to Port Orleans in 2001, where Dixie Landings merged with Port Orleans to become Port Orleans: Riverside. This merger saw the transformation of landmarks, like Colonel's Cotton Mill becoming The Riverside Mill food court and the Cotton Co-op evolving into the River Roost Lounge. Renovations in 2004 and 2011, including the introduction of the Royal Guest Room theme in 2012, are discussed. Interesting Tidbits: Fascinating details are shared, such as the hand-carved wooden Alligator Bayou guest beds and the transplantation of a massive live oak tree on Ol' Man Island. The Sassagoula River, themed after the Mississippi River, adds another layer of depth to the resort's design. Our Memories of the Resort: The hosts share personal memories of Dixie Landings, creating a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Get in touch! Send questions and comments to 90sdisneypodcast@gmail.com. Relationship Capital is the ignitor to the flame of difference when your attempting to establish a sense of allyship and understanding.  When attempting to travel down a road less travelled and connect with others.  When it comes to: Trust in America: Do Americans trust the police?  Here are some findings from the Pew Research Center. The relationship between the public and police across the United States was brought into sharp focus over the course of 2020 and 2021 following the high-profile killings of several Black Americans by police, including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and the worldwide protests that followed. The Center reports only 10% of young black teens and adults believe they'll be treated fairly by police as compared to 18% of Hispanic youth and 16% of Asians who were asked the same question.  The highest level of trust came from whites at a clip of 32% Therefore, I am motivated  to ask the question what's the key to bridging the gap and providing the police and the youth they serve with better camaraderie between the two parties? For some in depth answers to this very question I want to tell you about the Teen And Police Service Academy. The Teen And Police Service Academy (TAPS) was founded in 2011 by the late Chief Brian Lumpkin and Criminologist, Dr. Everette Penn. At the time, the Houston Police Department was granted funds to create a program that would enhance and build a more trusting relationship between teens and police in Houston. Chief Lumpkin, Dr. Penn, and Officer Mott took on this mission and worked collaboratively to build out the TAPS Academy program. In the Spring of 2012, the first Teen And Police Service Academy was launched at Beechnut Academy, a Houston Independent School District alternative school. Data showed there were dramatic positive behavioral changes between youth and police among those who participated in the program. Now, TAPS Academy is a 501-C-3 non-profit organization and has expanded into more than 30 schools nationwide. A distinct component of the program is that TAPS Academy-trained officers spearhead the lessons. Giving law enforcement and the youth a unique chance to get to know each other on equal footing, in order to exchange ideas and learn from each other while also learning an array of life-building skills such as drug and alcohol prevention, conflict resolution, the importance of mental health, safe driving, service learning and more. Currently, TAPS Academy provides 5 programs: TAPS Academy, an 11-week curriculum-based program, TEENPOL – a TEA-accredited class in Texas, TAPS Clubs, Summer Leadership Workshops, and the SB-30 Community Safety Course. Dr. Everette B. Penn is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Teen and Police Service (TAPS) Academy in Houston, Texas. TAPS Academy's mission is to bridge the gap between youth and police and reduce crime through education, skill building, and service-learning TAPS Academy's TeenPol program is a Texas Education Agency approved curriculum which grants one high school credit to students upon completion. TAPS Academy reaches over 1,500 youth annually internationally. Dr. Penn joined me this week to tell me more.   For more information: https://www.tapsacademy.org/ Follow: @tapsacademy Call: (832) .525-1560
