Today on the show, we're joined by Lindsay Thomas Jr., the Director of Communications for the Quality Deer Management Association and editor of Quality Whitetails magazine. As a follow up to our previous episode, "Has QDM Been Hijacked?" we chat with Lindsay about the following topics: The evolution of QDM How to combat misinformation in QDM Controlling what you can control in wildlife management Why it's important to communicate the right information on QDM Using science-based facts to support management decisions, rather than fads or trends Buck shaming Why it's okay to like and appreciate big antlers Standing up for what's right, even when it's unpopular How to support QDMA during Covid-19
Today we are talking with Lindsay Thomas Jr. We discuss not only how to improve our personal health but how to improve the health of our land and deer population as well. He teaches us more about QDMA and the Field to Fork program that is teaching others to hunt and cook their own deer. We talk about how to decrease the risk of spreading Chronic Wasting Disease. Lindsay serves as the Director of Communication for Quality Deer Management Association and is the editor of Quality Whitetails magazine. Lindsay Thomas Jr. is an expert and one of my favorite writers on whitetail deer management and hunting but even more than that he is a great guy! A long overdue guest finally joined us on this week's podcast. Dr. Craig Harper of the University of Tennessee Extension discussed his recent research devoted to understanding acorn production. We encourage you to grab pen and paper, an aerial of the property you hunt, and turn on your "listening ears". We hope this week will further open your eyes to proper timber management techniques. Dr. Harper's research was recently shared in the latest version of Quality Whitetails. This article reviewed the 10-year study conducted on acorn production and common techniques used to increase acorn production. The study found not all oaks are created equal. Genetics of the tree are strong influencers for the productivity of the mast the tree will annually produce. They found that 40% of the trees will on average produce 70% of the overall acorn production. For years, folks have been trying to improve the quantity of the mast produced by fertilizing under the canopy of trees. This research crushed that myth and proved it ineffective. In addition, the proved that releasing the crown of the most productive trees in the woods drastically increased overall mast production. This podcast was a great balance of the importance of research and the application of solid information to improve habitat and natural resources. We hope you will be drawn to solid science in the future as a guide to your land management strategies. Be sure to manage your timber for improved acorn production and enhanced wildlife habitat. Enjoy.Learn.Share! #ForLoveoftheLand

Patrick Durkin of Waupaca, Wisconsin, is an award-winning outdoor writer, newspaper columnist, and general outdoors reporter. He also provides editing services for books and magazines. He was a contributing editor of the Archery Trade Association and writes frequently for national archery and hunting magazines. In addition, he has been MeatEater's wildlife research contributor since June 2018, and an editor for Inside Archery magazine, an archery industry trade publication, since December 2014. Durkin has written a weekly outdoors newspaper column since 1984. His weekly column has appeared regularly in over 20 Wisconsin newspapers during his career. His magazine articles have appeared in several publications such as the American Hunter, Outdoor Life, Bugle (Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation), Quality Whitetails, Whitetail Journal, etc. It's no secret there is a lack of participation in the hunting industry by people of color. The lack of representation of people of color in the hunting industry is what led Durkin to become curious about this issue. It led him to ask the question is hunting too White? As a result of this curiosity he wrote an article "Is Hunting Too White?". As a Black hunter I'm always asked if I'm fearful of hunting with White men with guns. Some hunting outfitters have their names with the word plantation on it without realizing how that impacts people. Frankly, hunting is a test on how well you get along with people, especially when you're sitting in a blind. We discussed some things that need to change so hunting can be more inclusive. Organizations are entering more cities to reach more Black and Latino children. Durkin recognizes there are lots of things he doesn't have to think about because of his position in the world. Not everyone has access to land, rivers and different places to hunt and fish. This is a thoughtful discussion about a touchy subject. Before you go… We enjoy sharing tips and resources with all of you so please keep them coming. As I stated before I want this to be place where you, my audience gets involved in the conversation. In this episode I go through a recent article published in Quality Whitetails about a large coyote research project in the Southeast. The article focuses on what the data means for managing deer, but I think the data could also help us as trappers learn more about the coyote and his habits. I also touch on a few things I'm thinking of doing differently for the coming season, particularly some things that I've read in O'Gorman's Hoofbeats of a Wolfer book.
Lindsay Thomas Jr., Editor of Quality Whitetails, is back for our third annual Southeast Deer Study Group recap. We cover a wide variety of topics including mature buck movements, CWD, coyote predation, and the effects of a late rut. What we learn: Is Kentucky in the South? Late fawn births, resulting from a late rut, result in lower productivity for young does the following year TN created a rating system for CWD risk among their counties that correctly predicted the most likely place for it to appear, Unfortunately, it was too late We are not all going to die from zombie deer and scientists have not been able to show that CWD could cross the species barrier to humans Bucks labeled as "movers" are 81% more likely to be killed by hunters than bucks labeled as "sedentary" Deer have been shown to breed in Florida every month but May Planting native grasses could be a waste of money Rainfall can have a large impact on antler growth in dry areas, and effects can last the life of a buck Mowing clover fields is a waste of time Coyotes and other predators kill a ton of fawns in N. Pro-Tracker – Pro-Tracker® is a bowhunting radio frequency tracking system. The carrier screws onto your arrow shaft and the transmitter sits in the carrier. When the arrow connects with the target, the transmitter detaches itself from the carrier and attaches itself to the animal’s hide. This allows the arrow to pass all the way through the animal for ethical shots. The transmitter then emits a specific radio frequency which can be picked up from up to two miles away. The Pro-tracker® Receiver then tracks that radio frequency and allows you to track how close you are to the transmitter for the recovery of all wounded game The Habitat Podcast – The Habitat Podcast is a podcast for land and wildlife habitat managers and for hunters who learn and utilize different types of habitat in their hunting strategy. We interview hunters and habitat managers from across the country, picking their brain to learn their successes and failures. We are different in the fact that we are not the experts. This podcast is for us, and the listeners to learn a thing or two from the experts we analyze. QDMA – To produce better deer, hunters need reliable information. This information generally comes from research. QDMA helps design, coordinate, and fund practical research projects that increase hunter knowledge. Since 2005, QDMA has contributed more than $500,000 to support important research projects in over twenty states. Education Since its earliest days, QDMA has been a recognized leader in educating hunters and the general public on all aspects of whitetail biology, management, and habitat improvement. However, the types of information desired by these groups as well as the tools available to deliver this information constantly change, and QDMA is keeping pace. QDMA continues with existing educational activities such as seminars, field days, and Quality Whitetails magazine, but delivery methods also include television, DVDs, and w-based opportunities. QDMA’s educational materials include printed books, electronic books, classroom curriculums, posters, DVDs, apps, online courses, internships, and more. Advocacy Each year there are countless threats to the future of deer hunting and management at the local, state, and national levels. Due to QDMA’s growth and strong support from the professional wildlife community, it is considered the most respected and influential whitetail organization in North America. As a result, QDMA serves as the leading advocate for the wise management of deer and the protection of our deer-hunting heritage. QDMA also maintains strong ties with its members, other conservation organizations, state and federal agencies, and other groups with an interest in deer hunting. Since 2006, QDMA has engaged on nearly 800 state, federal, and provincial management and policy issues impacting wildlife, habitat, and our hunting heritage. Certification The Deer Steward program is QDMA’s personal educational experience designed to offer hunters and wildlife professionals an opportunity to gain advanced knowledge of Quality Deer Management directly from the nation’s top experts. Both online and in-person courses allow deer hunters to become experts in a number of areas, from deer biology to habitat management. In addition, QDMA’s Land Certification Program (LCP) is a multi-level, voluntary process that evaluates and certifies one or more properties against an established list of QDM standards. Hunting Heritage Hunting is an essential tool for sound deer management and part of our sporting heritage. However, in many states hunter numbers have declined, and existing hunter recruitment programs are proving only marginally effective. In response, QDMA has developed innovative youth and new hunter recruitment programs.

We dive into GPS whitetail deer tracking studies with respected biologists, looking at how weather affects deer movement. You may be shocked at what they have to say about it. We also talk to experienced hunters about how weather affects their hunting strategies and how this information will affect them in the future. Part one begins with Spencer Neuharth of Rut Fresh and the Wired to Hunt Rut Radio. Next up is our own Adam Crews with how weather affects his hunting. He is followed by Will Brantley, the hunting editor at Field and Stream and Outdoor Life and Jeff Gienke of the Hunting Beast. Then we look at GPS tracking studies with Dr. Bronson Strickland of the MSU Deer Lab and Dr. Stephen Webb of the Noble Institute. Their observations may totally change when and where you hunt. Part 2 will continue the series with Dr Duane Diefenbach of the Penn State Deer Forest Study Group and Lindsay Thomas Jr., editor of Quality Whitetails magazine and communications director at the QDMA. For a different perspective we talk to the Mad Scientist of deer hunting, Mark Drury, about how weather impacts his hunting strategies. Finally we will wrap up the series by circling around to the hunters we spoke with at the beginning to see if this will impact the way they hunt.
